$300,000 in local funding secured SEVENTEEN local community organisations in Port Stephens will share in $300,000 in grants secured by local State MP, Kate Washington.

Schools, youth groups and sporting clubs were the big winners this year, with grants awarded in all corners of the Port Stephens electorate.

Three schools, five youth groups, six sporting facilities, and three community facilities will receive funds from the 2020 NSW Community Building Partnership program.

The largest grant will go to Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Surf Lifesaving Club, receiving $50,000 to repair and replace the clubhouse roof and gutters.

Iona Public School in Woodville will receive $30,000 to upgrade their playground area, and the Tilligerry Scouts will receive $22,000 to install rooftop solar to improve the functionality of their community hall.

“I am so pleased to be able to support these seventeen projects right across Port Stephens with grant funding,” said local MP Kate Washington.

“This year, it was our local schools, youth groups and sporting clubs that received the largest share of this grant program, with much-needed funding going towards really worthwhile projects.

“Every application for this grant was deserving, especially given fundraising has been difficult in 2020. I wish all of them could have been successful.

THE ten person judging panel has just released the results of their deliberations in the 2020 Port Stephens Literature Awards.

These short stories are now in the hands of the

winning stories listed below are in random order.

NINETEEN volunteer firefighters from the Pindimar-Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service (RFS) were presented the Premier’s New South Wales Bushfire Emergency Citation

by Kate Washington MP, and Group Captain David Bright.

The ceremony, conducted last Tuesday at the Pindimar Rural Fire Service station, was in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the emergency response to the 2019-2020 bushfires.

The recipients were Alex Sinclair, Cameron Bright, Chloe Cavanough, David Bright, Donovan O’Brien, Douglas Gillespie, Graham Winn, Gregory Hutchison, Gregory Snape, Helmut Panhuber, Jett Krohn, Mark Hill, Maurice Leembruggen, Noel Quince (Deputy Captain), Peter Plain, Ralph Clark, Ronald Doyle, Sandy Snape and Uwe Seil.

Kate Washington MP stated, “It is impressive to see so many volunteer firefighters in this community.

“Last summer’s fires were furious and horrific and you protected our communities.

“You are all heroes and on behalf of the people and Premier of NSW, thank you.”

Group Captain Bright stated, “It is the number of times you kept going back out to fight the fires that also makes you heroes.

“That tenacity, together with the support of your families is what matters.”

The award comprised: ● The NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation - the insignia of the Citation is a rectangular silver framed navy-blue bar featuring a red stripe to signify the bushfire event, and the NSW State Flower, the Waratah. ● A Letter from the Premier of NSW and a Certificate co-signed by the Premier and Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons. ● An embroidered Commemorative Cap. The 2019-2020 bushfires have been described as the worst in living memory.

The catastrophic conditions impacted life, communities, property and the environment on an unprecedented scale.

The NSW Rural Fire Service advised that last summer’s bush fire season taught us some terrifying lessons about the importance of being prepared and having a plan.

Just last Monday week, local RFS volunteers from Tea Gardens 7, Pindimar 1, and North Arm Cove 1, all responded to a fire in the Pine Forest possibly caused by lightning strikes.

They extinguished the fire but locals should be vigilant and prepared with resources available at: www.myfireplan.com. au.

The news of a potential vaccine against COVID-19 is promising news in what has been a challenging year; however another deadly pandemic remains rampant in our community, and the probability of stamping this one out lies with us.

Family violence has been on the rise during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The E-Safety Commission has recently published statistics which include: • 1 in 4 people are emotionally abused by their current or former partner; • 1 in 3 people are physically abused by their current or former partner; • 98% of reported cases involve technology; and • Image-based abuse has increased 238% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During COVID-19 perpetrators have become more creative, and a pattern has emerged of perpetrators using tracking on parcel delivery to obtain the new address of victims.

The pervasiveness of family violence in the community and its impact on separating families, played a part in the decision of the Family Law Courts to establish a special COVID-19 list in April of this year.

Under the scheme, matters of an urgent nature arising from the COVID-19 pandemic (many of which involved family violence) were listed before the Court within 3 business days of filing.

While a vaccine for this pandemic may not be in sight, we can all play a part to address the prevalence of family violence in our community through our own attitudes and actions.

By Sandra MURRAY THE continued closure of the MidCoast district swimming pools continues to cause significant local frustration as the weather warms up, particularly with reports of unauthorised swimming occurring while the pools are seemingly locked down.

Last week, the Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge, advised that, “While our

district swimming pools at Tea Gardens, Stroud, Bulahdelah, Nabiac, and Krambach remain closed to casual visitors for now, groups who have completed a COVID-19 safety plan and have current public liability insurance are able to book these facilities.

“The above swimming pools are unsupervised and with full public opening we would be unable to satisfy all of the NSW COVID-19 safety plan requirements for pools,

which require frequent cleaning, supervision of numbers using the pool, and collection of personal details of every person entering the facility.”

Exasperated locals are organising a petition to Council seeking to have specific timeframes with supervision to enable access to the pools, especially for those with health and mobility issues.

Still on Council: ● Council offices will close for Christmas from 2pm on 24 December. ● Most office services, including the Tea Gardens Service Centre, will recommence 4 January 2021. ● Waste collections will operate as normal over Christmas but put your bins out the night before as collection times may vary. ● All Visitor Information Centres will be closed on Christmas Day. ● The Council will be transitioning to a new Information technology system and web services will be unavailable from 7 to 11 December. ● The 2020 MidCoast Annual Report is now available online with a foreword

Palm Lake residents make donation to Westpac Helicopter Service ON Friday 4 December 2020 the Residents of Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens (PLR) had the pleasure of presenting a cheque for $1,032 to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service during their weekly “Happy Hour” event.

Unfortunately, this donation was delayed by several months due to restrictions of the Covid -19 pandemic.

Graham Nickisson, the Community Liaison Officer for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Newcastle Regional Office attended this event on behalf of the Rescue Helicopter Service to accept the cheque.

Graham gave a very interesting talk on his past experiences over the last 38 years serving in the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service and invited

Lifting deeds of release for abuse survivors LAWYERS have welcomed the New South Wales Government’s announcement to set aside deeds of release, saying the reform was a significant step in improving access to justice for survivors of abuse.

Maurice Blackburn NSW head of abuse law Danielle De Paoli said the reforms which are due before the NSW Parliament early next year would bring New South Wales in line with Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria in ensuring survivors of abuse could receive fair and appropriate compensation for harm caused.

"As the Royal Commission made clear, many survivors of historical abuse were forced to accept completely inadequate settlements from major institutions and sign deeds as part of this that saw them having to waive their rights to a future civil claim," Ms De Paoli said.

"For many survivors that meant being left with little option but to accept compensation that had been harshly minimised in favour of churches or institutions - with survivors forced into inadequate schemes far below what they deserved and without proper advice regarding their legal rights.

"The reforms announced today are a significant step in seeking to address this injustice, including importantly ensuring that survivors who were forced to accept inadequate settlements can now also bring a further civil claim to be compensated appropriately.

"We welcome this announcement that will help to enhance access to justice for survivors and continue to call on other states still yet to act on this reform to do so with urgency," she said.

Kelson Hawkins achieves High Distinction in Maths Competition

By Sandra MURRAY KELSON Hawkins from Hawks Nest has achieved Equal Second Place in this year's Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition.

A student at Tea Gardens Public School, Kelson also received a High Distinction Certificate which placed him in the top 0.03% of the state.

Kelson attended the awards presentation function on the 18 November, stating, “I can't believe it, Equal Second Place. I am so excited. I love mathematics.

“Last year I was the winner of the Great Lakes Area and this year I have topped that award coming Equal Second Place out of the whole competition.”

Tahnee Hawkins, Kelson's mother, told News Of The Area, "It has been a tough year for us being in isolation for three terms of school but he soldiered on and still achieved his goal.

“What an achievement. Our family is so excited for Kelson and we are so proud of him, well done."

Carol and Christine from the Tea Gardens Library who provided academic support and exam supervision.

Next year Kelson will continue his studies at the new Catherine McAuley Catholic College in Medowie.

Over 17,450 year five and six students from 294 schools across NSW participated in this year's 40th Annual Mathematics Competition.

It is one of the largest maths competitions in Australia and offers awards, including money, to the top performers in each region.

The Hawkins family also acknowledged Kelson’s teacher, Caitlyn Kelly, who sent maths homework every day to support his home schooling during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Kelson’s mother added, “Caitlyn is a teacher who really cares for the future of all her students. Her dedication and love of the job shines through.

“A big part of Kelson's success belongs to Miss Caitlyn Kelly. We can not thank you enough.”

Scouts has been teaching children how to be prepared in Australia since 1908.

From its English origins Scouting struck an enthusiastic chord among boys in so many countries that it is now coordinated globally by the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM).

From its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the WOSM provides unity amongst the 155 national Scouting organisations (representing a Scout membership of over 28 million).

“Hyrum had experienced Scouts as a young fella and had happy memories of his time in the Scouts and wanted to be part of bringing joy he felt then to the young people in this community,” said Nicky.

“Hyrum brings lots of skills to the Scouts.

“He has made his own boat, loves kayaking and tying knots to name a few,” she said.

Bulahdelah Scouts are still in need of volunteers to offer life skills to the local youth through the Scout movement.

BUYING a renovator’s delight is exciting and sometimes a little daunting. You see the potential but the prospect of opening ‘pandora’s box’ can strike fear into the hearts of even the most enthusiastic renovator. It’s not so much about the work you know is ahead of you, it’s the unknown.

So, even if you’re embarking on a project, it’s best to minimise those unknowns as much as possible to minimize unexpected spend, work and heartbreak over ‘what lies beneath’. Have your buildinginspector bypass the obvious – damaged weatherboards, dicky windows and doors etc and focus on structure, plumbing and electrical wiring. Structure in particular requires serious attention. You may find that previous works have compromised the structural integrity of the property and that could sway you away from the purchase – for good reason. So too with termites.

Minor infestations are generally not dealbreakers. Treatment is effective. But tearing off plaster to find that all your supporting timbers are virtually dust is a serious problem.

It’s a disaster of enormous financial and emotional proportions.

I recommend you pay a few hundred dollars to save yourselves tens of thousands

Christmas cheer for volunteers

By Adrienne INGRAM MYALL Koala & Environment Group (MKEG) volunteers celebrated the end of a busy year with an event on the Tea Garden Riverfront.

Twenty-four members enjoyed tasty tapas and other dishes served over two hours by Lynda and Glen Stevenson, the MKEG Koala Coordinators who manage the Seagrass Café on the riverfront.

President Richard Streamer thanked everyone for their support over what had been a difficult year and reminded them of some highlights of 2020.

MidCoast Council has advised that district public swimming pools will remain open on a limited basis for group bookings across the region, keeping within current NSW Government COVID-19 requirements.

“While our district swimming pools at Tea Gardens, Stroud, Bulahdelah, Nabiac, and Krambach remain closed to casual visitors for now, groups who have completed a COVID-19 safety plan and have current public liability insurance are able to book these facilities,” said Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge.

“The above swimming pools are unsupervised and with full public opening we would be unable to satisfy all of the NSW COVID-19 safety plan requirements for pools, which require frequent cleaning, supervision of numbers using the pool, and collection of personal details of every person entering the facility.”

The Gloucester Hydrotherapy pool is open as it is supervised, with a strict COVID-19 safety plan in place.

All Council controlled lakes and beaches are open, along with natural swimming enclosures, such as tidal pools in rivers and lakes.

Excellent question. There is an evergrowing selection of plant-based meals that resemble their carnivorous counterparts. You raise a valid point.

Having said that, why do many meat cuts not resemble the animal they’ve come from?

A pork sausage looks nothing like a pig. Mince is a clever disguise of some mashed up cow and a schnitzel looks far more appealing than a chicken leg or wing.

I’d say many meat eaters feel more comfortable with food that isn’t confronting or a reminder of what they’re really eating.

Life is full of superficialities. Some people adorn their homes with plastic plants. Synthetic clothes are made to look like natural fibres. Floorboards are replaced with vinyl timber-look designs.

At Christmas, people hang plastic snowflakes from plastic trees and spray fake snow on windows that are closed to keep out the 40 degree heat.

It’s not just our surroundings that are an illusion. Fake lashes. Injected lips. False nails. Silicon implants.

Some people should carry a fire hazard warning as they’d probably melt or combust in heatwave conditions.

Lana, I’ve gone off on a tangent here, but you get the drift. All is not what it seems in many facets of life.

MidCoast Council is keeping an eye on changes to the NSW Government’s public health order and restrictions regarding public swimming pools, and will adjust the opening of our pools as regulations allow.

Singing sensation and all-round legend Delta Goodrem (pictured) hosts this special concert celebration from the Sydney Opera House. The concert is in tribute to the resilience of the Australian spirit of 2020 and features performances from Olivia Newton-John and Vera Blue.

It’s hard to imagine that there could be much left for Maggie Beer to learn about food. But the celebrity chef and <i>Great Australian Bake Off</i> judge has long held a secret longing to discover more about Japanese food. Twenty years after her first visit to Tokyo, Beer returns to the Land of the Rising Sun, hoping to amass enough knowledge to produce a Japanese-inspired feast for her friends back in the Barossa.

Her travels across the country take viewers from Tokyo across the mountains to rural Noto Peninsula, a hidden gem largely undiscovered by tourists, then south to Osaka. Along the way, she finds plenty of inspiration in the country’s expert chefs and elegant dishes.

There was a good attendance of 49 players with most matches in a Triples format but there were some Fours games as well.

The winners on 21

points were Col Amos, Mark Hair and Ron Webster.

The runners-up on 18 points were Len Baker, Harry Parker, Hylton Newman and Glen Reinhard The Myall Bistro voucher was won by Col Amos.

In other news: It appears likely that the regular Wednesday competition will resume on 6 January 2021 in time for members to limber up for the first of the Club Championships in 2021.

The last scheduled bowls for 2020 is on the 16 December before the Christmas break.

Supporting local families in need FOR the 32nd year, Newcastle Permanent is joining with The Salvation Army to collect presents for kids and teenagers, with the goal of making this Christmas enjoyable for a record number of families in need of a helping hand after a challenging year.

“We’re calling on our people, their families and the local community to help us collect a record number of donated presents this year to share with The Salvation

Army’s Christmas Toy Drive Appeal,” said Newcastle Permanent CEO Bernadette Inglis.

“We know this partnership makes a real difference to our customers and communities.

“Over the last three decades we’ve helped to ensure that thousands of presents were found by children under Christmas trees that may have been bare.”

Through to December

21, all Newcastle Permanent branches across NSW will become collection points for toys and gifts.

“There’s a real spirit of generosity among our people and many of them, despite the challenges they’ve faced in 2020, have already brought in gifts to help The Salvos reach their target of collecting 500,000 donated presents this December,” said Ms Inglis.

“So many families across our communities have felt

“Any gift of any value will help and be warmly received.

“You don’t have to give a lot, just whatever you can,” said Adam Power, Newcastle Permanent’s local Regional Manager.

“Presents should be new, unwrapped, unused and can be of any value.

“We’re particularly hoping to make this year special for teenagers in our local area so, in addition to presents for younger kids, gifts like accessories, movie tickets, sports equipment, electrical appliances like hair straighteners and gift vouchers for the likes of eBay, shopping centres, Netflix or department stores will really help.”

The Salvation Army’s Major David Collinson, NSW Public Relations Secretary said Newcastle Permanent’s 32 years of ongoing support was a great support each Christmas season.

TUESDAY 1 December: Social bowls played 2 games of Triples and a game of Pairs.

Ingrid Luck, Bev Rhodes and Robyn Webster led all the way against Deyonne Page, Christine Fossey and Lorraine Murphy winning by 7 shots 16 v 9.

Judi Polak, Jean Glover and Karen McPhie had an 8 shot lead (14 v6) on the 9th end, bowling against Dawn Jones, Lynda Richards and Maynie Roberts.

On the 13th end they were still 7 shots in front, but things were about to change.

The next 3 ends were dominated by Maynie's team actually scoring 7 on the 15th end, avoiding humiliation and ending the game in a draw 21 all.

The Pairs, Jill McBride and Sandra Leisemann started strongly, scoring 6 on the first end v Sheila McBride and Bette Saillard.

By the 8th end they held an 11 point lead, they continued their hold in this game despite Sheila and Bette narrowing the gap to 5 on the 11th end.

Jill and Sandra won convincingly 23 v 15.

The winners on the day by drawing a card were Ingrid, Bev and Robyn.

Local sprinters amongst the medals

In an exciting and hard fought final, Keira came second with a Personal Best time of 12.11 seconds, just 0.06 seconds behind Summah Harrison of Tomaree High, who overhauled a quality field to win in 12.05.

Keira told News Of The Area she was thrilled with her result, particularly after an injury and pandemic affected year on the track.

“After a very long lay off from competitions due to

Covid-19, this was the first large competitive race for nearly a year.

“I was very nervous initially in the heat but did well.

“In the final against all of the fastest girls in my age group from all over NSW I ran the fastest I could and

achieved a personal best time and came a very close second, and only just beat the third girl!”

Keira is now looking to build on her result in 2021.

“It was such a very exciting time and I am fired up now for future events nationally.”

AFTER the drama of 2020, the Tea Gardens Hawks have evolved with a positive outlook for season 2021.

Without a side on the park, this year saw the Club concentrating on administration and fundraising.

President Rob Smith (Dakka) spent numerous hours on grant applications to upgrade existing, and to build new facilities at Myall Park.

Midcoast Council gave the Club full support in these ventures.

The Council has also upgraded lighting during 2020.

Sponsors have assisted Junior, Senior, and Lady Hawks with raffles at the Tea Gardens Hotel, The Tea Gardens Country Club, and the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

A major donation by Garry Mead from the National Training Association of a

Club bus has also boosted the outlook in 2021(pictured).

The National Training Association has also donated the cost of a defibrillator for the Hawks home games next season.

Correspondence with existing Club sponsors and a number of new ones has been positive.

The Clubs Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the Tea Gardens Hotel on 10 December and promises the election of a strong Committee for next year’s challenges.

The meeting will confirm Club Coaches and will advertise for support staff.

At the AGM of the governing body (Newcastle & Hunter Community Rugby League), Clubs were informed that the Newcastle Rugby League will no longer have affiliation with The Newcastle and Hunter
