By Margie TIERNEY TAKE a stroll along Marine Drive near ANZAC Park and you can’t help but notice Tea Gardens slipway.

It’s been a vital part of the community for over 60 years.

"The main purpose for the slipway's existence is for the appropriate maintenance of vessels,” Slipway Association President Paul Bendy, told News Of the Area.

“Like all things, vessels need to be maintained to ensure they are safe, sea worthy, compliant with the various regulations and don't become an environmental threat to our waterways."

But over six decades the rules and regulations surrounding slipways have changed.

Last Friday, the Slipway Association met with representatives of MidCoast Council, EPA, Marine Parks and Crown Lands. The meeting was designed to further the Tea Gardens Slipway Association’s project to

running Court battle involving MidCoast Councillor Len Roberts and the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council.

The Magistrate ruled there were significant extenuating circumstances surrounding the incident in July last year.

Mr Roberts was charged with assault after a dispute at the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council over the relocation of the Council to new premises in Tea Gardens.

Police were called and a standoff lasted several hours, with Mr Roberts and a number of his staff barricaded in the building.

Among those who were prevented from leaving the building was Kelly Drinkwater.

Following the Court ruling Kelly told News Of The Area, “I am glad Len received a nonconviction for this incident.”

ensure the slipway meets current standards and remains a feature of the waterfront.

“The project consists of extending the rails and moving the winch-house so the cradle can be moved to higher ground and out of the tidal zone of the Myall River,” Paul Bendy said.

“By doing this, proper catchment drains can be installed to collect and treat any runoff from the cleaning operations.”

Discussions have been underway for four years and the project doesn’t come cheap, but Paul Bendy believes it’s vital to keep a slipway in Tea Gardens.

"Having a facility like the slipway in our town is like having any other emergency service.” did not deserve any of the accusations put toward him.”

Ms Drinkwater remains on stress leave after last year’s incident.

News Of The Area also spoke to Fiona Manton, Chairperson of the Karuah Aboriginal Land Council, “The loss of Len Roberts from the KALC is devastating.”

She added, “Len Roberts’ political and managerial experience is sorely missed.”

“If things continue as they are at the Council, I fear for its future.”

Len Roberts said, “I retired at the end of last year, knowing that I had left the Land Council in a sound financial position with over $1million in the bank, for future projects.”

“If any skipper found themselves in an emergency situation where their vessel was in danger of sinking or being a threat to our environment, the Slipway Association would make the slipway available to remove the vessel from the river to remedy the situation."

It’s also been described as the marina's Men’s Shed where mates get together to repair and clean their boats.

Over the years the ferries have used it, the effluent boat still does, and it’s capable of lifting 30 tonne, more than enough to service houseboats and commercial fishing boats.

Paul Bendy is hopeful final approvals for the slipways’ re-construction will be through by the end of the year.

LABOR candidate Phil Costa freely admits he’s on the back foot when it comes to being a household name in the seat of Lyne.

Mr Costa came to Tea Gardens last week for a ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum organised by the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association.

Facing a series of questions, Mr Costa first spoke about his previous careers, as a school teacher and Principal, then Politics, serving as the Mayor of Wollondilly, before State Politics beckoned where he would serve as Minister for Water and Corrective Services.

“I’ve had a very long and hardworking career in community services,” Mr Costa told the gathering.

Mr Costa was asked to stand as the Labor candidate for Lyne late last year, but to win the seat from the Nationals’ David Gillespie he’ll need a swing of more than 11 percent.

First question for the night from the community, was Labor’s campaign promise to increase wages for low income earners.

“Wages have been flat-lined for too long.

If you don’t have people earning a quality wage, they’re not going to spend money,” Mr Costa told the meeting.

community dealt with Labor’s tax reform measures affecting superannuation, selffunded retirees and the closing down of the concessions that gives cash refunds for excess dividend imputation credits.

He was asked point blank how a selffunded retiree could replace a 20 percent loss of income and Mr Costa said “I can’t tell you that, but I advise you to see a financial planner to find out ways of reinvesting your money.”

Labor believes that closing down the concession will save more than $11 billion over the budget estimates from 2018/19 while having no effect on 92 percent of taxpayers.

Mr Costa admitted “I’m running in a seat where we have probably the largest number of retirees in the country. How will it affect my chances, I don’t know, but I stand by it and we’ll have to see on 18 May.”

The Guardianship Act provides that a person (the appointor) can sign an Appointment of Enduring Guardian document appointing a person to make certain decisions for the appointor in the event that he or she cannot make those decisions. The Urge THE URGE has always relished the great formative rock songs of the late 70’s and 80’s - the stock-in-trade of a working covers Rock Band - but the boys also have a knack for recognizing current hits along the way that will stand the test of time.

The scoreboard didn't reflect the game the Rooette's played their butts off against a very high-quality outfit.

The metre makers in the first half were Toni Clarke, Ashley Bills, Tamara Smith, Tayla Wilson, Kelly Johnson, Meagan Terry, Lisa Pollard, Lilli Holmes and Kayla Campbell.

Some Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest residents may be unaware of a new Development Application (-100/2019) that doubles the proposed number of house lots in Precinct One from 76 lots to 153 lots.

Other houses are on the drawing board for a staged progress of construction. Lodged with Midcoast Council from Tattersall Lander Pty. Ltd, a 226 LOT Subdivision and 3

Reserves are proposed, to be created as a staged construction on part of the Durness property in Viney Creek Road Tea Gardens.

This DA supersedes the one approved by Great Lakes Council in 2014.

The community has a right to be informed about this new application as it has implications both for lifestyle and environment The provision of so many more residential lots in the new development DA has been designed to overcome establishment costs for sewerage and water links required for the area, we are informed by the developer.

Post Sectional Final Tea Gardens Women’s Bowls

THE Post Sectional Final for our Grade 4 Yellow side commenced on Sunday 28th April at Raymond Terrace.

Two games were bowled on that day, one on the Monday and another on Tuesday.

Going into the last day of play our side were in equal first place with Cardiff. Both sides holding 14 points just

a difference in margins they had 68, Tea Gardens 57. The margins being irrelevant as we were bowling against Cardiff on this final day of play, we just needed to win.

One TG team had a win, but their score was not enough to compensate for our losing team, we gained 1 point Cardiff 4 points, 18 v 15 so close and yet so far. A great effort by our side, well done ladies. Congratulations to Jean Glover, Bev Stephens,

Loretta Baker and Karen McPhie who scored 8 shots in one end bowling against Lambton Park during the Finals. Many thanks to all our club members, the members from the men's bowling club and the friends who came to support our side at the Pennant Finals, it was fantastic having you there to cheer us on.

There was no social bowls played on Tuesday 30th April. On Thursday

2nd May, post Pennant lunch plus social bowls. Format for social bowls was 3 games of "turn around" Triples. Prior to play Club President Robyn Webster formally welcomed new member Trish Ward to our club and bestowed birthday greetings to Ingrid Luck.

A great win for Dorothy Thompson, Sandra Leisemann and Robyn Webster 14 v Ingrid Luck, Judi Polak and Pat Baker 5.

Lyn Nightingale, Bev Rhodes

and Lynne Green defeated Jan Coomer, Jeanette Emmett and Kayelene Pearson 20 v 13. Trish Ward, Jo Younghusband and Karen McPhie winning 17 v 12 against Pam Gilchrist, Kathie Rimmer and Lynda Richards.

Winners on the day with the highest margin was Lyn Green's team. Following play all bowlers and members enjoyed our post Pennant lunch catered for by the Myall Bistro and Café. Formalities

after lunch, President Robyn Webster congratulated the Grade 4 Yellow side, presented Jean, Bev, Loretta and Karen their "8 pin", announced the winner Bev Rhodes and Runner Up Dorothy Thompson of the "at home competition" and thanked all members for their hard work during 2019 Pennant Season.
