Second book in series BUNDABAH resident, Greg Mutton has released his second book.

Mr Mutton was born and raised in Bolwarra, educated at Maitland Boys High and lived most of his life in Maitland.

He and his wife Debbie moved to Bundabah in 2011 and in 2014, when medical issues forced him to retire, Greg took up writing as an interest.

He joined the local

Fellowship of Australian Writers where he found the mentoring and camaraderie helped him develop his love of telling a good story. And now the stories just keep coming!

He released Book 1, Reunion, from his first series Chronicle of the 12th Realm, in June 2019.

Now Book 2 in the

To help celebrate Easter, the Tea Gardens Lions Club safely prepared and dropped off chocolate egg hampers to cheer up people isolated in local retirement villages.

Most locals will celebrate Easter at home with some new fun ideas popping up to help deal with COVID-19 social constraints.

Many local children from the Tea Gardens Primary School are participating in a virtual Easter Hat Parade with hat images being shared online from the 7 April.

In addition there are online Easter colouring-in competitions, elaborate inhome egg hunts being organised, and Easter bunnies appearing in many home windows.

Significantly, this year the Easter Bunny has been issued with an official “eggxemption” to travel, so that chocolate eggs can be delivered to everyone everywhere.

The Chief Justice of the Family Court has issued a Media Release confirming that the family courts remain open to assist parties and provided parents with some general guidance to act reasonably and in the best interests of children.

Other points in the release and our comments include: 1. In the highly unusual circumstances now faced by parents/carers, situations may arise that make strict compliance with current court orders very difficult, if not, impossible. As a first step, and only if it is safe to do so, parties should communicate with each other about their ability to comply with current orders and they should attempt to find a practical solution to these difficulties.

2. It is imperative that, even if the orders cannot be strictly adhered to and are varied by the parties, the parties ensure that the purpose or spirit of the orders are respected

when altering arrangements, and that they act in the best interest of the children.

3. If any agreement can be reached about new parenting arrangements, even if only for a short period of time, the agreement should ideally be in writing. We suggest this includes email and text, and your records should be preserved.

4.

Consent order applications can be filed electronically with the court.

5. If there is a dispute, or if it is unsafe to agree to changes, and parent(s) have real concerns, parties can approach the court electronically and seek a variation of the orders.

In the interim, parents should keep the children safe until the dispute can be resolved.

Free child care during pandemic

AROUND one million families are set to receive free child care during the Coronavirus pandemic under a plan from the Australian Government that will help deliver hip pocket relief and help the early childhood education and care sector make it through to the other side of this crisis.

Under the plan, the Government will pay 50 per cent of the sector’s fee revenue up to the existing hourly rate cap based on a point in time before parents started withdrawing their children in large numbers, but only so long as services remain open and do not charge families for care. The funding will apply from 6 April based on the number of children who were in care during the fortnight leading into 2 March, whether or not they are attending services.

Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie said the plan supports families while also ensuring child care and early learning services can keep their doors open for workers and vulnerable families who need those services.

“The plan provides funding certainty to early childhood education and care services at a time where enrolments and attendance are highly unpredictable.”

“These services are vital for so many parents so they can provide for their family, and children need as much routine as we can help provide at this unsettling

Re-starting your enrolment will, however, hold your place for that point in time when things start to normalise, and you are ready to take your child back to their centre.”

“We will get through this crisis by supporting each other and ensuring that no Australian, even though we have to be isolated, should have to go through this alone,” Dr Gillespie concluded.

My kids are getting a bit bored with the home schooling booklets that have been sent home. Any suggestions?

At the risk of being sued by the Education Department, I think now is the time to teach them skills for the new world.

You know, the one they will have to negotiate when this is all over. Kids are pretty intuitive, but I don’t think even the most creative of them could have imagined that a virus, (probably started by a bat in a wet market in Wuhan – a theory disputed, of course, by the New Age gang who think it is all linked to 5G and we are about to be microchipped

by Bill Gates and his able assistant, Madonna) would have ended up with them spending every waking moment with their siblings, washing their hands fifteen times a day, unable to see their friends, and having to teach their parents how to navigate Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

In our home, our daughter is doing her HSC and she has an excellent online system where she attends her normal classes and has regular meetings with teachers. In between classes, she practices for her driver’s licence, driving us to the local shop for more chocolate (at the moment, we regard this as essential travel). My son, on the other hand, has been given a sheet where he can do a range of tasks that respond to different learning styles. His learning style is Prime Ministerial in nature – he has a knack of choosing whichever task involves other people (us) doing a whole lot of researching and backgrounding, or else activities that disrupt the workplace (our home). One such activity was to do an interpretive dance mirroring the growth of a spinach plant.

That one broke us. My husband has since implemented a new curriculum of practical skills for him: Catch a fish; Learn how to do Internet banking; Learn to tie a range of rope knots; Get boat licence; Learn to drive the Landcruiser; Weigh and tare products; Use the ride-on and whipper snipper weekly; Make the perfect coffee . . . and so on. In the scheme of things, I think these skills are going to have far more relevance.

Another alternative is to just get your kids to keep a daily journal. After we all get through this, no child will be short of material for any creative writing task for the rest of their schooling, in fact the rest of their life.

COVID-19 Community Update

By Sandra MURRAY NOTA is providing regular local health, police and services updates for our Myall Coast communities.

NSW Health advise that there were 2,580 cases in NSW and 16 deaths as at 4 April.

Nationally, there are 5,687 cases and 35 deaths.

The average age of all these cases is 47 years and the average age of death is 78 years.

Of the confirmed NSW cases, 245 are in the Hunter New England Health District (as at 5 April).

Within this District, ten patients are in local hospitals, including five in ICU. Sadly and with condolences, a 76 year old man is the first person in the District to die from COVID-19 on the 4 April in a Sydney Hospital.

He was one of four passengers of the Ruby Princess to die over the weekend taking the death toll from the cruise ship to eleven.

For local postcode 2324, there are five COVID-19 cases to date, which highlights the importance of complying with all social isolation and social distancing directions.

Good news is 76 people have recovered so far, with most people (over 90%) recovering for all ages. .

Australian Health Officials are hopeful that the rate of transmission is lessening, however caution that all protective measures must remain in place.

They have concerns about the risk resulting from untraceable community transmission which accounts for approximately 10% of cases in Australia.

Thinking about how to respond to this risk leads to the question: should everyone wear a face mask in public?

Recently there has been changing and new information about wearing face masks.

To date, the Australian Government has

News Of The Area advised that masks should only be worn by people who have COVID-19 symptoms or those looking after someone who may have the virus.

This advice may change as a result of new studies and evidence.

The American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently recommended, “To wear cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. For example grocery stores and pharmacies, especially in areas of significant communitybased transmission.”

However, wearing masks raises new challenges.

These include how to keep masks clean, dry and hygienic, how to stop touching masks while being worn, and how people wearing masks need to avoid developing a false sense of security which can lessen their compliance with the measures already in place.

Community feedback wanted draft MidCoast Council policies

THE community has an opportunity to provide feedback on several draft MidCoast Council policies currently on exhibition.

Community feedback will help to shape these important policies moving forward and there’s plenty of time to get submissions in with all exhibition periods closing on 1 May at 4.30pm.

“Sometimes it’s easy to miss the opportunity to provide feedback and insight into council matters but it’s really important to us that the community can share their thoughts,” said MidCoast Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

“We are asking the community to take the time to familiarise themselves with these draft policies and let us know how they think we could do things better, what can be changed or improved and advise us of anything we may have missed.”

There are four draft policies currently on exhibition for the community to provide feedback on. These are: The Draft Abandoned Vehicles and Vessels Policy – to ensure legislation and resources are applied to achieve positive environmental health and safety outcomes for the community in an ethical and transparent manner.

Well no doubting what movie he’s been watching in isolation confinement… ‘The Karate Kid’.

As you know in that movie the Kids’ coach is of Chinese origin and despite endeavoring endlessly, to catch a fly with chopsticks, he was unable to do so.

So, it stands the test of possible conclusion that catching a Chinese virus with chopsticks might also be a futile pursuit.

WARNING: Do not attempt to demonstrate the absurdity of the anti-

vaxers pontifications by consuming bat soup from a Chinese wet market with chopsticks, nor should you use unsterilized chopsticks from a COVID19 Intensive Care Unit.

Meanwhile, I am filling in time watching and re watching replays of ‘Rocky’, but cannot get the same answer each time, on how many blows he takes to the head in his first Rocky movie.

Something more useful from an exercise perspective, has been my efforts to upskill my jazz waltz capability with a laundry mop, god the mops starting to look good!

The Good News this Easter

WITH COVID-19 in full swing and Social Distancing the new normal, it might seem hard to find any good news this Easter.

With Churches closed and services cancelled or moved online, there is a chance that some of us might be quite isolated or even forgotten.

Staying connected has certainly presented some challenges as we work at being and doing Church in a new way.

In our parish communities of Bulahdelah, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Karuah, we have made use of the various types of technology available to us, whether it be email, telephone, motor vehicle or Shanks’ Pony as we try to ensure that we stay mindful of each other.

Each Wednesday and Saturday we have been publishing a “Church in a time of isolation” newsletter

containing a short letter, various pieces of parish news, some resources for praying at home and links to various services streamed on YouTube as well as attached articles for reflection and, of course, the “something to make us smile” which forms part of church bulletins the world over.

Our computer skills may not be too sophisticated, but we do the best we can.

The Good News we have come to understand this Easter is that we have each other.

We are connected in the name of the One whose story we remember at a time when we usually gather to celebrate our Christian faith.

In remembering the events of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are invited to live the Christian message in our hearts and minds and put it into action.

We remember those who are suffering in our world in so many ways whether it be the Coronavirus,

I wanna marry an Aussie bloke when I get hitched again, I'll hunt him down like a kangaroo and I'll throw me boomerang, I'll hide behind the bushes to see if I've a catch, And if he's on the ground mate, I got the perfect match.

I'll have to knock him brainless, so he knows just who's the boss, And stuff him in me dilly bag and check out what I've got.

A blondie headed surfie or a tan skinned jackaroo, Maybe a true blue curly who plays the didgeridoo.

I don't care as long's he's mine and in his place he'll stay Cause I've always got me boomerang if he decides to stray.

So if you're on the make, mate, be watching from behind And if ya hear a whirring sound, RUN! Or you'll be mine.

I'll be hiding in the bushes just like I said I'd be And you'll be on the ground mate, or up the nearest tree.

We remember those whose courage and love for others causes them to give their lives in service as frontline workers in this time of pandemic or in fighting our recent bushfires.

We remember the support workers who enable others to do their jobs on behalf of us all.

We reach out in whatever ways we can to those who do not have the support available to us both here at home and around the world.

We take time to pray for each other, to phone, write or email someone when we think of them and to be mindful that we are not alone.

Wherever we are, however we are feeling, we have each other.

As we celebrate the joy of the resurrection this Sunday, we look to a time we can share this joy together, changed forever.

Progress and Action around Myall

By Gordon GRAINGER WELCOME to the condensed report on the activities of these three community groups: Southern Area Reference Group (SARG), Progress Association (PA), Myall River Action Group *(MRAG).

Condensed due to the closedown of group meetings because of the virus pandemic, however not closed to our continuing endeavours in bringing improvements to our area and keeping you informed of our hits and misses.

This pandemic will pass in time and it is our belief that whilst some things will change forever, the final result will be that we emerge on the positive side of the

ledger.

MidCoast Council are functioning as normally as possible, with crews continuing their work. We were able to have sinkholes filled along Marine Drive Tea Gardens within 24 hours of notice.

Pathway requests are being assessed and addressed through the PAMP system.

The proposed car park in Myall Street has plans submitted, however the project remains unfunded and we must maintain pressure to ensure it is included in this year’s budget.

We are still waiting on a decision re oneway traffic for motorised wheelchair traffic across the Singing bridge and confirmation that repairs will be carried out on railings of the bridge.

Our request for boat ramp upgrades has resulted in Council applying for a grant to improve the Tea Gardens ramp near the bridge and they expect to have a positive response within the next month.

The Moira Parade ramp is in sad condition and we have been reporting equipment damage and potential personal

memory of the working vessels in our early history. Approval must now be obtained from NSW Naming Board.

Tenders have closed on the dredging of the natural entrance to the Myall and will be submitted to Councillors at the April meeting.

We do expect the successful tenderer will be nominated and a start date selected.

Council intend delivering 20,000 cu.m. of sand to the erosion points on Jimmys Beach, and 100K cu.m. to the stockpile. It is intended to complete the program well before the October deadline imposed by the bird society.

On that point, we are still hopeful the Federal Government will provide additional funding to ensure the security of Ramsar listed Corrie Island, from feral animal intrusion.

In conclusion and from a personal viewpoint, I would like to say—this unprecedented intrusion into our lives will pass. The reports of abuse and hoarding is not the example of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest communities I have known over many years. Those front -line troops serving us at retail outlets are at the sharp end and deserve respect for their loyalties.

The same can be said for all those out there who are serving our community and I ‘dips me lid to youse all’.

The planet was infected with a deadly virus. That disease was sin, which separates us from a loving, perfect God who gives us our life and breath.

Corona Virus or not, no one leaves this planet

alive! But God sent Jesus to save us from this deadly disease. How? It needed an uninfected person to take on the sickness of all.

That’s what the cross is about.

To paraphrase the Bible: “God made Jesus, who was immune from sin, to be infected for us, so that in him we might be healed, saved, and accepted by God.” Jesus rose again from the dead, and the world was never the same

again. Jesus promises his presence, his peace, eternal life.

This Easter may the great story of God’s cure give you his peace, for he said “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart for I have overcome the world.”

Destination ‘Stay at Home’ these holidays

MIDCOAST Council is reinforcing the message from the State and Federal Governments and the Police, urging travellers not to visit the region this Easter, in line with COVID-19 restrictions and recommendations.

The National Cabinet has made it clear that everyone should continue to stay at home unless they are shopping for essentials, are receiving medical care, are undertaking daily exercise or are attending work or school, with the Public Health COVID-19 Restrictions of Gathering and Movement Order 2020 coming into effect

this week.

“Holidays and travel are simply not essential and I’d like to reiterate the Government’s clear message that now is not the time to travel from metropolitan areas to regional NSW for a holiday - the safest thing you can do right now is stay at home, in your community, and you can expect the police to caution and fine those not adhering to these rules,” MidCoast Council Mayor, David West said.

“I’m saying this to our community members too.

This virus is everywhere. It’s not the time to travel between

towns, there should be none of that.

“To help slow the spread we need to keep following the self-isolation advice, do the right thing by our families, friends and neighbours, which means staying 1.5 metres away from others, avoiding social gatherings, washing hands and ensuring that if you are sick, you are self-isolating.”

Mr West has been particularly concerned about the upcoming Easter break, with fears that people from the city may try to relocate themselves to regional NSW in an attempt to escape

quarantine, which could potentially see a spike in local cases and be dangerous to the community.

“More than anything the health and safety of our community is paramount and we’re all in this together, we all need to do our bit to help stop the spread,” Mayor West added.

“I want to assure everyone, the MidCoast will still be here when this is all over and we will be ready to welcome all holidaymakers and tourists, but not now, our region’s borders are unofficially closed until this pandemic is finished.”

The NSW Police Minister, Mick Fuller announced this week that the Restrictions on Gathering and Movement Order will remain in place for 90 days.

Following National Parks advice NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is working to keep your local national parks open during the COVID-19 pandemic, but as NSW national parks have experienced significant increases in visitors in recent weeks, particularly during weekends, NPWS need your help.

Although NPWS have had to close some facilities, including campgrounds and high-visitation areas (beaches, picnic facilities, busy lookouts) to protect staff and the community, many walking tracks remain open for exercise and NPWS want to keep them that way.

Astronomy Group look at the Stars

DURING these uncertain times, I still gaze at the Universe and wonder at its marvel especially now we have so much “home time”.

The Universe is so dynamic, stars come and go just like this dreaded “Covid virus” and life will go on.

The science of Astronomy has so many facets and steeped in so many different cultures over the ages.

Let’s take a look at the most ancient culture and its astronomical significance.

Australian Aboriginal Astronomy is a name

given to Aboriginal Australian culture relating to astronomical subjects – such as the Sun and Moon, the stars, planets, and the Milky Way, and their motions on the sky. One of the earliest records of Aboriginal astronomy was made by William Edward Stanbridge, an Englishman who emigrated to Australia in 1841 and befriended the local “Boorong” people.

Some Aboriginal groups use the motions of celestial bodies for calendar purposes. Many attribute religious or mythological meanings to celestial bodies and phenomena. There is a diversity of astronomical traditions in Australia, each

with its own particular expression of cosmology.

However, there appear to be common themes and systems between the groups.

Due to the long history of Australian Aboriginal astronomy, the Aboriginal peoples have been described as "world's first astronomers" on several occasions.

THE MILKY WAY: The Milky Way is the heart of Aboriginal Astronomy. It focuses on an emu in Dreamtime.

The Emu in the Sky, a story common to many Aboriginal groups — its body is made up of the dark patches in the Milky Way. The Kaurna people

of the Adelaide Plains of South Australia called the Milky Way wodliparri in the Kaurna language, meaning "house river". They believed that Karrawirra Parri (the River Torrens) was a reflection of wodliparri.

The Yolngu people believe that when they die, they are taken by a mystical canoe, Larrpan, to the spirit-island Baralku in the sky, where their camp-fires can be seen burning along the edge of the great river of the Milky Way. The canoe is sent back to Earth as a shooting star, letting their family on Earth know that they have arrived safely in the spirit-land. Aboriginals also thought that god was

the canoe.

The Boorong people saw the same dark patches as the smoke from the fires of Nurrumbunguttias, the old spirits.

Another story told during Dreaming; A blind man lived with his wife in the bush. Every day he told his wife to go out and hunt for emu eggs for him to eat. Even though his wife tried hard to please her husband, he was always angry with her, telling her that the eggs were too small.

One day while she was out hunting, she came across some very large emu tracks.

She thought of her husband and how angry he got, and followed the tracks all the way to the nest. She found a huge emu there and threw

VOLUNTEERS are continuing to work on parks and garden maintenance across the MidCoast Council area, however they are doing so on an individual basis to enable them to meet social distancing requirements imposed as part of the COVID-19 pandemic

response.

There are normally more than 1000 volunteers at work across the region mowing, weeding and whipper snippering to keep parks and open spaces maintained for the benefit of the community.

While the groups that usually undertake these

activities have been put into hiatus, arrangements have been made for individual volunteers to continue this essential work.

“Our volunteers are an extremely important part of how we can deliver maintained open spaces for our community,” Council’s

Director of Liveable Communities Paul De Szell said.

“With over 3000 hectares of parks, 750 hectares of which require mowing there is a huge need for this work to continue so we can provide our community with maintained open space for

By Sandra MURRAY MOST local sports activities are sensibly on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, so NOTA is reporting on backyard sporting feats by locals.

Kodee (aged 13), Saskia (aged 10) and Malakai (aged 7) all play football for WallsendWest Newcastle AFL Club.

With the local football competition suspended until 31 May 2020, the three are training hard in the backyard, practicing their running, ball skills, circle work and sprints.

In between workouts and from far away, NOTA interviewed the three young sports stars.

Malakai, the youngest, shared, “I miss running around and kicking goals with my team

but I am still training hard in the backyard and in the local park.”

Saskia advised NOTA that, “I don't get to play with my friends but I am training with my brothers which is funny but OK.” The eldest, Kodee, stated, “We all get outside in the park next door and have a kick but I am also enjoying riding my bike around.”

Across the Myall Coast region, community sports have been suspended to comply with NSW Public Health Orders.

The NSW Government has issued guidelines supporting how people can go outside to exercise safely.

Allowed outside exercises include walking in family groups and/or pairs, bike

riding, tennis, golf, fishing and surfing.

Note outdoor playgrounds are closed, as are public BBQ areas, community pools and skate parks until further notice.

Experts at the NSW Institute of

Sport (NSWIS) have some great ideas to help people maintain their physical and mental wellbeing at home.
