By Daniel SAHYOUN A PERFORMANCE by the student Indigenous Dance Group was a highlight of NAIDOC Week Celebrations at Bulahdelah Central School last week.

The young performers, who proudly represent the Worimi, Dunghutti and Biripi tribes, shared their cultural history through dance, language and song.

Group member, Dakota Edgerton, said their performances promote a sense of unity by teaching others about their culture.

“I am very proud of my culture and I enjoy sharing it,” she said.

hopes this year’s NAIDOC theme will raise an awareness of the importance of language in their Culture.

“It is so important to share the songs and dances to keep the language alive for future generations,” group member Abby Fenner said.

“A lot of young people do not get the opportunity to share their culture, and I feel very honoured to have a part in keeping these traditions going.”

The dance group has been running for three years and showcases the talents of Indigenous students from Years 4-12.

“When we first moved here the developers promised that another road would be going through,” Cheryl Fairhall said.

Most of the petitioners moved to the area before the

construction of The Grange, Estia Health Aged Care Facility and Palm Lake Resort.

Residents say the then developer, known as ‘Creighton’s’, gave them an assurance that a second access road into the estate would be constructed as part of ‘The Grange’ development.

It never happened.

Concerns centre around emergency access, the high traffic volume and heavy construction vehicles which use Settlers Way on a daily basis.

The petition has been sent to MidCoast Council.

Kate Washington has also raised the residents’ campaign with Council Administrator John Turner.

The Grange Retirement Village is now home to 190 dwellings with more homes currently under construction.

Palm Lake Resort Retirement Village has 160 homes with a further 120 on the drawing board.

Settlers Way is also the only access road to the Estia Health Aged Care Facility on Spinifex Avenue.

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Annual Council grants have been announced with a $176,000 nod to community organisations in support of some wonderful projects and community endeavours.

Applications across all five grant programs were officially approved and voted upon

unanimously by councillors at last week’s council meeting.

The five areas cover community, environmental, heritage, cultural and Aboriginal projects.

Port Stephens Council’s General Manager, Wayne Wallis, says the grant programs are run annually and are a great opportunity to fund community initiatives.

“These funds go to many deserving groups

who go on to make great contributions to Port Stephens,” Mr Wallis said.

Programs for Karuah that were successful in gaining funding include, but are not limited to: Karuah Public School was successful with an application to build a cultural garden and outdoor learning environment.

Karuah Local Area Land Council will receive money towards updating and improving the Land

sponsoring specific groups and projects that in turn support the community,” Cr Doohan said.

“I’m so proud to be on the selection committee that proportions the money to the applicants, and whilst it’s been a challenge to make it fair, I reckon we got it right.”

“It’s so good to help make our home the best place on earth,” he said.

A scenario from a real case demonstrates how much it pays to ensure that a well thought out business succession plan is in place. Three veterinary surgeons operated a business in partnership. One of the surgeons was diagnosed with cancer.

Steps were taken to dissolve the partnership and for his share of the business to be sold to the remaining partners. At the suggestion of a financial planner the surgeons had all agreed to take out insurance with MLC “Live Cover Super”.

The cover was for 2 different types of event: death or total and permanent disability. A deed of dissolution of the partnership was drafted which provided that on receipt of the insurance proceeds, two thirds of the proceeds would be paid to the surviving partners to

help them buy out the departing partner. Insufficient attention was given, however, to the drafting of the Deed and also to the nature of the insurance. The partner made a claim for total and permanent disability which was not accepted (he was still working when the claim was made). He later successfully made a claim for terminal illness benefits which were paid to him directly. Due to the uncertainty in the wording of the Deed, the fact that the partner made an unsuccessful claim for payment satisfied his obligations under the Deed. As a result, the remaining partners were left substantially out of pocket. They paid the departing partner for his share of the business and received none of the insurance proceeds.

WORLDWIDE, around one million plastic bags are used every minute, contributing roughly 3.5 million tons of waste per year.

These sobering statistics, along with a desire to do something to retain the pristine waterways she has come to know and love, made Brooke Feltis take action and form Boomerang Bags in the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest area.

“The Boomerang Bags initiative was a really practical way to bring about a change in the way we see single use plastics, particularly plastic bags,” Brooke said.

Boomerang Bags started as a community initiative in Burleigh Heads in 2014.

“Now we have over 324 Boomerang Bags communities across Australia, some even in other countries overseas. To date approximately 96,000 Boomerang Bags have been lovingly made which equates to around 28,550kgs of landfill being diverted,” Brooke told News Of The Area.

Plastic bags cause havoc in waterways, with many different species of marine life mistaking plastic for food and ingesting it.

This can lead to internal blockages, starvation and ultimately death for marine species.

As part of the food cycle, the implications are clear for Australians who love their waterways and also their seafood.

“I believe that in the retail industry, consumer choice is paramount,” Brooke said.

“Taking away plastic bags would remove a choice from the consumer and the fear would be that they would take their business elsewhere. If all retailers got on board and removed plastic bags, then the consumer would have no option but to bring their own bag, box or basket when shopping.”

The group recently held a successful sewing bee and the “lovingly hand-crafted” bags will be distributed at community-based events.

“One Boomerang Bag can

pass through six sets of local hands before it’s finished; someone will collect the fabric, then it is cut to size, ironed, pinned, handles are also cut, ironed and sewn and then we cut and screen print our own pockets and sew the whole thing together,” Brooke said.

The Boomerang Bags Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Launch is on 15 July from 8am at the Coles Village Market where the bags will be available for purchase.

MIDCOAST Council is aware that gravel has been dumped at the Our Girls Memorial site south of Bulahdelah, and has arranged for contractors to remove it as soon as possible.

This advice comes after local residents contacted News Of The Area, concerned that the large stockpiles of road materials are disrespectful at a memorial site.

Speaking with News Of The Area, a MidCoast Council spokesperson said sealing contractors had been given

approval to use the location “as a short term, temporary stockpile site”.

“This was under the condition that the area would be cleaned up when works were completed,” the spokesperson said.

“Unfortunately, due to wet weather delays, this process has dragged on.”

Council said as the work is now completed, they have approached the contractor to remove the remaining materials.

The area is also marked as a U-turn bay, but the stockpiles mean that large

view to potentially having it removed.”

Council said the “process is likely to involve discussions with the traffic committee before a decision is made to retain or remove it”.

ON 17 January 1912, Robert Scott and four companions reached the geographic South Pole. Sadly, Scott’s entire party died on the return journey from the pole.

On 6 June 1941 “The Fire on the Snow,” a verse play

by Australian playwright Douglas Stewart, was premiered on ABC radio to great acclaim.

On 24 June this year,

The organisers of the event (a small group of theatre lovers) have received many invitations for repeat performances in various locations and requests for similarly dramatic pieces to be presented locally.

The thank you barbeque was a culinary delight, cheffed by Eddy Lonsdale who provided very tasty rissoles and sausages donated by Jeff’s Butcher shop of Tea Gardens and the accompaniments provided by the Sheargold Group.

Once again, the residents of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest have shown their determination in returning the Myall River to its pristine condition and on behalf of the Myall River Action Group, thank you all.

Dear Jasminda, Last week my boss sent me a text message to say that my services were no longer required in my landscaping job. I’m devastated at his lack of protocol. A text message?

I think the form of communication should suit the employment position.

If, for example, you worked as an employee of Facebook, your boss should have sent you a ‘memory’ link that showed snippets of your working life over the past year and the number of times you liked your 364 imaginary workmates for ridiculous things.

This would be followed by the inevitable sinking feeling when you realised that you’d been de-friended by your boss and even the lady who replaced the toner cartridges, and then you could have just clicked on the angry emoji face and typed FML and all would be forgotten.

If you had worked as the director of the FBI, your boss should have sent you a form letter with “I wish you well in your future employment endeavours” similar to the one James Comey received, because that’s all you deserve when you hold one of the highest positions in the world.

But given that you’re a landscape gardener, a simple message made out of two-tone besser blocks or some cow manure calligraphy across a strip of fresh Sir Walter saying “we’ve outgrown you” may have been more suitable.

See it as an opportunity.

IN days gone by, a new neighbour would be welcomed to a town or community by a knock on the door and the offer of a cuppa.

Well, not much has changed in the Myall region.

“When all the new people come to Tea Gardens we always get in touch,” Kristine Mobbs told News Of The Area.

Kristine belongs to a group who meets once a month for lunch in and around Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

The women simply call themselves ‘The Over 60s’.

Like so many residents who now call the Myall area home, Kristine Mobbs is relatively new to the area, relocating here two years ago. ‘’My father always said to me Tea Gardens is a lovely place, Krissie, and when we drove in here we immediately said this is the place,” Kristine said.

Last Friday’s get together at the Tea Gardens Hotel saw around 30 women enjoy lunch and a good laugh.

different restaurant and just have a great time,” Kristine said.

Robyn Nelson has only lived in Tea Gardens for a couple of months.

“My neighbour told me about it,” Robyn said.

“This is my second lunch and I’m gradually getting to know everyone.”

Judy Gilbert is one of the organisers who lets everyone know by email the date and time for the next get-together. ‘’It’s just a welcome to

town for anyone who wants to meet new people,” Judy Gilbert said.

“Everyone is welcome”.

She added with a smile, “I said to Emily (Hotel owner) we’re pretty noisy, and she said that’s what we want.”

MidCoast Water Dissolves NSW Minister for Environment, Local Government and Heritage, the Hon. Gabrielle Upton MP, has today approved the proposal to dissolve MidCoast Water and move its functions into MidCoast Council.

After carefully considering the proposal and the representations received during the public consultation process, Minister Upton

has recommended to the Governor that the proposal be implemented without modification on and from 1 July 2017.

Accordingly, the Governor has today issued a proclamation to this effect.

The announcement follows the resolutions made by both MidCoast Water and MidCoast Council in December 2016.

Today it will be business as usual, and this will

continue into the future according to MidCoast Council’s Interim General Manager, Glenn Handford.

“Nothing changes from a service delivery perspective from day one, and residents can feel confident that the integration will be planned with precision to avoid any disruption to services.”

After careful consideration of the options for the future delivery of water and sewer services

to the MidCoast community, the proposal outlined staff and operational efficiencies estimated at over $3million per year achieved through the integration of functions, which will ultimately deliver cost savings for the community.

“The staff from both organisations will continue to work together to deliver services for our community, at the same time realising significant savings and

efficiencies over coming years as we integrate,” Glenn added.

Harmonising corporate support functions such as technology and communications will deliver appreciable savings and benefits.

MidCoast Water has successfully provided quality water-related services to our community for 20 years, and as part of MidCoast Council, will continue to focus on the delivery of drinking water and the protection of our environment.

“We are pleased with the progress that has been made by MidCoast Council following its proclamation in May 2016 and are certain this integration of two strong service providers will further strengthen the ability to meet the needs of the diverse community it serves,” Minister Upton said.

“The current was quite strong and the visibility under the bridge was appalling, deep and dark, so we were doing it by feel,” Isabelle Strachan told News Of The Area.

“We found a few tyres and a lot of construction and road work signs,” Isabelle said.

“We had a pushbike and a chair and loads of bottles.”

“We left quite a few bottles in situ because they are actually habitat and they are not as big a problem as the plastics,” Isabelle added.

Above the surface, volunteers donated their time and their boats to haul the rubbish on board to be taken to the tip.

On the shore, more volunteers were cooking up a storm of burgers and bangers to keep the troops fed and fuelled.

“In terms of the waterways, the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest community gets very little in support from State Government agencies; now they’ve banded together to do the work themselves.”

“It so good to see the community banding together to improve their environment,” Kate Washington said.

This is the time the club hosts its annual ‘Changeover Dinner’, a chance to look back

on the year that was, and introduce a new president and board.

and sporting associations.

Park Plans Skate Ahead

Ideas for the new skate park in Bulahdelah flowed thick and fast last week, at an on-site workshop hosted by MidCoast Council.

IDEAS for the new skate park in Bulahdelah flowed thick and fast last week, at an onsite workshop hosted by MidCoast Council.

Under the direction of

Community Engagement Officer, Sarah Wilkinson, students from the local schools headed to the Mountain Park to start developing an initial concept.

“We really want the design to be led by the young people themselves,” Sarah said.

“This first workshop was a chance to get those interested young people up to the site, q

But to make the project a reality, the Lions Club need more donations to reach their $250,000 target.

with representatives from Council, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, local police and schools uniting to show their support for the project.

“It is all about the youth of the community,” Lion Arthur Baker said.

“We are going to raise the funds for the park, but it will be built entirely from the ideas of the youth.”

Sarah said the skate park designer will then work with a core group of local young people to come up with a draft design, which will be put to the community for feedback.

“There may even be the opportunity to hold a mini skate competition to release the draft design and get the community excited for what’s to come,” Sarah said.

Average Resident Revealed Melissa Smith is the typical Aussie, according to the 2016 Census.

MELISSA Smith is the typical Aussie, according to the 2016 Census.

At 38 years of age, female, Australian-born and married with two children, Melissa ticks all the boxes.

Add in the family’s two cars and three-bedroom home, and Bulahdelah’s Mrs Smith said she is “proud to be average”.

“I had a bit of a laugh when I heard the description and realised it was exactly me,” she said.

But with the region having one of the oldest demographics in the country, it is no surprise that the

average Myall Coast resident is much older than the typical Aussie.

According to census data released last week, the average person in Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest is a 62-year-old woman born in Australia, who lives with her husband in a three-bedroom home, which is owned outright.

The couple have one car and a weekly household income of $903.

The data also shows that people aged 65 years and over made up 45.2 percent of the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest population in 2016, compared to 37.6 percent in 2011.

In Bulahdelah, the median age is 53 years and slightly lower in Karuah at 50 years, but still well above the national average.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said, “The older populations in these areas reflect a preference among many Australians to retire to coastal and rural parts of the country.”

Other information from the 2016 Census shows Karuah’s population hit 1,411 in 2016, an increase of five percent since the 2011 census.

In Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest, the number of residents rose to 5,037, up from 4,499 in 2011, however Bulahdelah’s

population fell from 1,519 in 2011 down to 1,424 in 2016.

The census data also shows that around half of all homes in the region are owned outright, which is

Australian Statistician, David W. Kalisch, said the 2016 Census had a response rate of 95.1 percent.

Club Triples Championship Quarter Finals Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By The JAFFA 28 June Another rain affected day with only one game of 12 ends being played.

Wednesday bowlers cannot take a trick with only 36 ends completed in five weeks.

Despite the overcast weather, 46 players filled the synthetic green and they showed some true grit going back out in the drizzle to attempt to play their second game.

completed before the drizzle became too much and the game abandoned.

The winners on 29 points, 20 for the win plus 9 ends won, were; Kevin Barbie, Gary Wynne, Henk Faber and Gary Melrose.

In second place on 28 points were: John Slater, Bob Skewes and Neville Vaughn.

30 June: The Fabulous Friday Jackpot Pairs continued with another great field of 26 players participated.

The Club welcomed Col Chambers from Cootamundra.

It was a beautiful day, although a little windy.

There was one rink of triples and five rinks of Pairs.

Victors on the day, with the highest winning margin, were; John Slater, Greg Smith and Stewart Sturrock.

Runners up were; Ken Devlin and Col Amos.

It might have taken 11 weeks for the last jackpot to be won but the new jackpot of $20.00 went off straight away and was shared by 4 players; Noel Jackson, Vic Garlick, Dave Perry and Pip Sullivan.

They enjoyed a free beer!

1 July: The first round of the Club Triples Championship was played today with six teams participating and the remaining teams enjoying a bye.

Conditions were, to say the least, freezing with an arctic wind howling in from the south.

In the games played today; The Sean Mearrick team defeated the Steve Pell side 23-15.

Leigh Hunt’s team defeated the Steward Sturrock combination winning 27-16 and the Greg Pearson side had a 10 shot win over the Denis Wilberforce three, 29-19.

The winners were Bev Dunn and Gary Wynne and the lucky losers were Dave Ransome, John Atherton and Ray Prigg.

The Club Triples Championship continued with the Quarter Finals being played.

Leigh Hunt’s team continued on their winning way defeating the Bill Thrift team, 27-16.

The Keith Smith combination accounted for that of Neville Vaughn, 27-11.

Jeff Baker was in superb

form for his team. They defeated the strong Alan Greenhalgh combination, 24-16.

The remaining game was one that will be talked about for a long time.

In an absolute thriller, Sean Mearrick, Richard Lee and Paul Syron managed a last end win over the very gallant team of Pip Sullivan, Mark Hair and Greg Pearson 23-20.

Congratulation to all players and sincere thanks to umpires, Ron Green and John Younghusband.

In the Semi-Finals, team Mearrick will play team Hunt and the Jeff Baker side will take on the Keith Smith combination.

Muddies nipping at Fourth

By Ann SCULLY THE Myall Coast Mudcrabs entertained a great local crowd in their clash against Old Bar Clams last Saturday at Myall Park completing Round 11 of the Lower Mid North Coast Rugby Union Competition.

For most of the first half, the scores were even at 7 all, however the second half

was pro Muddies with seven tries scored all of whom were converted due to an increase in players and helped by the largest bench ever since the Mudcrabs formed their team back in 2012.

Whilst it was difficult to choose “best players”, notable performers in the forwards were Nick and Kayden John, William Finau, Ray Sharp, Jackson Page, James Farmer

and captain Ashley Rushby.

With the pack moving forward, the backs clearly outshone the Clams with our best players being, Chris Sando, “the little champion” Nathan Colver who had obviously recovered from his previous injury, Danny Lawrence, Pat Laver and Trent Page.

Karl Nickle scored a never to be forgotten try from the

half way line, ducking and weaving around the Clams players ultimately diving over the try line directly under the goal post with the final score for the Muddies being 56-7.

Third home game this coming Saturday against the Forster Dolphins at Myall Park, kickoff 3pm.

On Friday 30 June of our members travelled to Karuah Bowling RSL Club to bowl in a Veterans Day Event. This is purely a social day, open to all bowlers who have reached a “certain age” in life.

Following the game everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch and some members received badges for reaching certain milestones in their life.

Sunday mixed bowls resumed as of the 2 July.

Games start 10:00, names to be submitted by 9:30. A game of bowls and BBQ lunch just $12. All welcome, especially new bowlers.
