An art Exhibition of Olga's work recently held in the Tea Gardens Hotel over two days raised $1,200 which Olga decided, after the recent devastating bushfires, the proceeds would go directly to the local Rural Fire Brigade.

Family and friends gathered at the home over Christmas exchanging gifts and enjoying the Festive season.

One gift, a table lamp has since been displayed in a downstairs room of the twostorey home, with no concern or thought it could become such a danger.

The lamp received a small amount of sunlight, overheated causing it to catch on fire and burn a tablecloth.

Colin told News Of The Area, “We were very lucky to have escaped this dangerous situation especially with the current hot weather conditions.”

Restrictions still in place UPDATE SEVERE (Level 4) water restrictions are in force across most of the MidCoast Council region, banning all outdoor water use and restricting business water use.

The Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens supply is the only area to remain on Very High (Level 3) restrictions.

Severe (Level 4) restrictions ban all outdoor water use.

Residents can only use recycled, grey or rain water on gardens – there is a total ban on sprinklers or garden irrigation systems.

No car or boat washing is permitted, and swimming pool top-ups are also banned.

Businesses and MidCoast Council are also required to severely limit water use.

Checking in with Pindimar

By Peter Economos Pindimar / Bundabah Community Association (PBCA) WITH the holiday period now over we can now inform and comment on the December/ January events.

Santa’s visit to Carols by the Water at South Pindimar Reserve was attended by over a hundred locals and visitors who thoroughly enjoyed/ appreciated Santa’s visit and the local Band’s entertainment while dancing on the sand. Prize winners of the annual Community raffle were, 1st Ticket F Blue 66 Greg Hutcheson- Pindimar, chose the hamper, 2nd Ticket L Green 28 Diamond Holli Blackhouse- Tea Gardens, bottle wine, 3rd Ticket D Orange 64 Steve Scott- Kings Langley, Painting, all were extremely happy with their prizes.

Local swap library house in the refrigerator at South Pindimar Reserve has been well used and appreciated by local residents and visitors.

PBCA have organised for the dead vegetation under power lines, poisoned by Essential Energy contractors to be mulched and or removed this month thus reducing that current fire hazard.

Local Brigade has been very busy attending to callouts. The members are volunteers and become extremely disappointed when called out to incidents where land owners illegally light up fires during the fire restricted period, or leave their property without fully extinguishing the barbie fire. Reminder, these are both

chargeable offences.

Despite the call for local road users to exercise more care, the level of accident incidents increased over the past two months with drivers of five vehicles losing control, unacceptable increase in road kill and one give way sign knocked over. PBCA repeats drivers take care.

The best way to reduce antisocial behaviour, such as vandalising signs, speeding, use of unregistered motor cycles or vehicles on roads and beaches, allowing unrestrained dogs run wild and be a nuisance, stealing from crab pots, is to take photos and immediately call the Police and/or the MicCoast Council Ranger.

Council cancel plans for a desalination plant

WITH good rainfall across the region in January, and predictions for more in February, MidCoast Council has decided to cancel plans for a temporary desalination plant at Nabiac.

The decision has put Council in the firing line of some criticism.

Council response and explanation as follows: “After good rainfall a week ago, the project was suspended while we assessed our situation across the region in regards to water security. We have advised relevant authorities of the decision this week, and we’re confident that with the changing weather conditions and the expansion of the Nabiac borefield, the desalination project is not likely to be required in the near future,” said Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott.

The bushfire emergency water access points will also be closed and capped from next week. “Demand on these sites has dropped significantly and water is now available from other sources,” Mr Scott said.

“Good rainfall through January in the catchment has allowed us to start refilling Bootawa Dam with levels increasing from 30% just two weeks ago to above 50% this week.”

Under a claim for breach of contract, the party making the claim is under a duty to mitigate loss. Indemnity clauses can modify this positon with the result that it may increase the losses to be paid for by the indemnifier.

The principal is the party who receives the benefits on an indemnity. Any person considering providing an indemnity should carefully consider whether it is required for the transaction to proceed, and the potential consequences. Consideration should be given to any applicable insurance policies to ensure that providing an indemnity does not put any insurance cover at risk. It is prudent to obtain legal advice prior to providing an indemnity.

By Ann SCULLY NEWS Of The Area has been serving and 'championing' the local community for over 40 years; Proudly delivering readers current news, happenings, information and results.

Originally set up by the local community, the newspaper has gone through many formats and publishers.

Eventually 'Rural Press' successfully managed the paper and later 'Fairfax', who ultimately saw closing the paper down a better option.

Knowing how important this paper was to/for the community, local people assisted keeping it going; Ann Sully being pivotal to its drive.

Passionate for the paper's continuation was (now) publisher Michael Wright, who is still behind the scene editing, designing and formatting the paper each week before 'the button is pushed' to send it to the Press.

"I don't get to see many people in a front-end capacity, but we have abolutely brilliant people who live right within the community, out and about, writing the community's news."

Mr Wright said, "If if wasn't for these people, so passionate about the community, the paper would struggle."

On that note, the paper has yet another experienced and passionate person who lives in the area, now writing for the NOTA. "We now have two Sandra's writing," Mr Wright said.

Sandra Clark, who has already been writing for some months now, entered semiretirement in June 2019.

She and her husband have been calling Tea Gardens their

home for the past six years due to the fact that Sandra had been holidaying in the area as a teenager. Her parents have also enjoyed living in Tea Gardens for the past twenty two years.

With a background in sales and marketing combined with a love of people, Sandra will bring hands on skills and experience which will enhance her stories when writing for the paper.

News Of The Area asked Sandra how she felt about writing for the local paper and she said, “People make a community and my experience here so far has found genuine, caring residents who enjoy positive, vibrant engagement – each contributing to this community."

“I believe that the area should be proud of its people and their attitude to the high involvement in community events and activities.”

Enter Sandra Murray who recently returned to Tea Gardens with her family from working in Canberra, attesting to her Hawks Nest origins as a descendent of the local Cole family who settled here in 1926.

Sandra who has had a career in justice, national security and defence, started out as a young Federal Officer in Redfern in 1990 and has an extensive background in government and academic reporting and writing.

New exercise program for MidCoast’s over 50s COTA NSW (Council on the Ageing NSW) and MidCoast Assist have partnered to launch an innovative new exercise program, Strength for Life, designed specifically for people over 50.

Strength for Life is an affordable strength and balance program that aims to improve strength, balance, coordination and endurance through regular resistance training.

Developed and run by COTA NSW, it complements MidCoast Assist’s mission to help older MidCoast residents live active and independent lives in their own homes.

The exercise classes will be provided by local exercise professionals who have completed specialised training to be accredited as a Strength for Life instructor.

Participants will undertake an initial assessment where a program tailored to their needs is developed, at a cost that ranges from $30 - $50. From there, participants can attend exercise classes throughout the week, at a maximum cost of $10 per session.

Accredited trainers ensure that everyone feels comfortable, even if they haven’t been to an exercise class before. As well as understanding the issues and conditions that are more likely to affect older people, they arm

Now available to the local community, Strength for Life has been embraced by seniors in SA, WA and Victoria over the past 15 years.

“All of our services revolve around supporting people to live active, social and independent lives in their own homes, and we are delighted to provide this innovative program in the local area”, added Christine.

RESIDENTS are being asked to share their views on MidCoast Council’s performance, with a community satisfaction survey soon to commence across the region.

The telephone survey, to be undertaken by independent researchers Micromex, has been designed to provide important insight into the local community’s priorities and satisfaction levels when it comes to Council activities, its service delivery, and available facilities.

MidCoast Council’s General Manager, Adrian Panuccio said the results will be used to determine immediate and longerterm priorities, and identify ways Council can provide improved or more efficient service delivery to its residents.

“Feedback about our performance and how people feel about local issues comes in all the time through a range of channels, but formalising the process is important in identifying regionwide sentiment and establishing benchmarks for tracking purposes”, Mr Panuccio said.

The survey involves contacting a sample of 400 people by phone, with representation across the entire region, and across all age brackets 18 years and over.

Previous surveys undertaken in 2016 and 2017 have relied primarily on sourcing local phone numbers randomly using the White Pages.

“With many people no longer having a landline at home, especially in the younger age

groups, we’ve asked Micromex to collect mobile numbers in busy locations prior to the survey kicking off. These will complement numbers generated using traditional methods”.

The ‘number harvesting’ process will take place from Thursday 6 February and continue through the weekend, with researchers making direct contact in venues such as Gloucester Farmers Markets, Taree Central Shopping Centre, and Wharf Street in Forster. Micromex staff will wear a clearly visible badge to identify themselves, and will produce Council documentation if required.

The survey itself will be conducted over a two week period, commencing on Monday 10 February and continuing through to Saturday 22 February.

Residents will be asked to provide feedback on a range of Council service areas through a series of questions lasting around 15 to 20 minutes.

“We’re encouraging anyone who receives a call to take the time and have your say. We understand everyone is busy, but your feedback will be instrumental in developing our forward plans”.

Calls can be expected between 4pm and 8.30pm Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays between 10am and 4pm. Researchers will clearly identify themselves as calling from Micromex on behalf of MidCoast Council. It is expected the results of the survey will be made available on Council’s website at the beginning of April 2020.

Jetty TIme Limit lack flexibility for the different types of users Dear News of the Area

AS a new resident and boat owner in Tea Gardens, I would like to express my support for the suggestions put by Jeff Schionning in the recent letter to the editor (Jetty Time Limit: Opinion article - Jeff Schionning NOTA 23 Jan 2020 P.5).

Similar to vehicle parking bays, we all understand that boat access to the jetty moorings needs to be managed. The current time limits however appear overly proscriptive and lack flexibility for the different types of users and different times of day.

The jetty is a great community asset and its use should be encouraged in a fair and sensible way for all stakeholders including

residents, visiting boats and traders in the area.

I do hope that the responsible body, Council or NSW Maritime, will review the current arrangement consistent with that proposed by Jeff Schionning.

Now is the time to take up a hobby you've always wanted to try - go to the gym, give painting a whirl, schedule in that nervous breakdown that you haven't had time for until now. The sky really is the limit.

If you are still at a loose end, you could always join in on school-based activities - help out with reading groups, attend excursions, be a canteen helper, or one of countless activities that are on offer.

What you will find, over the next couple of weeks, is that the time between drop off and pick up will absolutely fly and within a couple of years you'll possibly even be one of those parents counting down the days until the school holidays are over and you can have your freedom back again.

Dear News Of The Area, WHILST the newly installed transportable may well upgrade the Police facilities of Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest the demountable eyesore which has been provided is a complete disgrace.

Who is responsible for the appearance of the structure? Have they no consideration of the historic nature of the old structures?

How simple it would have been to clad the new structure in boarding which is sympathetic to the historic buildings to which it is attached.

Heads need to role on this.

Jetty Time Limit conversation OPINION Dear News of the Area THANKS for printing my opinion and thank you Rick for your comments (News Of The Area 30 January 2020), I wish you had got a name of our concerned citizen that he may contribute to the jetty discussion to find a more sensible solution.

A few helpful positive thoughts are first, many of our jetty users more senior and not as fit as we used to be, going for a swim or falling off the jetty, many will not be able to climb back out, a ladder on each jetty would

be helpful.

Secondly the two useless poles set just off the downstream jetty serve no purpose and make coming alongside more difficult and reduce jetty space, these should be removed.

Are the jetties a council or waterways responsibility?

Can the council and our local complainant please step forward and join the discussion with hopefully some constructive ideas.

Money raised for Cobargo Sally Hunter Hawks Nest Bridge Club HAVING raised $1000 for those devastated by bushfires, the Hawks Nest Bridge Club had, with so many needy recipients, the difficult task of deciding who might benefit.

We decided to send it to one community to help people directly affected by the bushfires.

One of our members had recently driven through Cobargo and saw the devastation up close.

She said, “having driven through the fire zone, it seems incredible that there is anything left to burn. There is no undergrowth, just piles of ash and most of the canopy is burnt.

But the fires still continue to burn”.

A father and son died during the Cobargo fires on New Year’s Eve 2019, trying to defend their property.

An elderly man, who suffered from severe burns, has since died.

One of the funerals was held recently and “a police escort was required to transport

food and people to the funeral, because of new fires” said a Bermagui local.

“The constant ‘on again, off again’ situation is really getting people down and preventing the return to any sort of normality. A small catering business in Bermagui nearby has been preparing 900 meals each day and taking them to RFS volunteers as they continue to fight the fires”.

We contacted Lynn Lawson, Secretary of the Cobargo Branch of the Country Women’s Association, who said “we are actively involved in handing out cash for a wide range of things – food, materials for rebuilding, clothes, and accommodation for people who have lost their homes”.

This convinced us to donate to this organisation who are seeing people on a daily basis, as the money will go to a number of people and make a real difference.

A review of the current fees and charges (including the supervision and collection of entry fees) for all pools in the MidCoast region will also be undertaken.

Council also resolved to discuss with the Parry’s Cove developers the future use of their pool as a community pool.

The feasibility of a pool advisory committee will also be investigated.

Seniors Week event

By Sandra CLARK FOLLOWING last year’s successful Ageing with Grace seminar, St Andrews Anglican Church Tea Gardens is holding a similar event during NSW Seniors Week 2020 on Saturday 15 February 9.00am to 1.30pm..

Revd. Peter Adkins said, “The aim of the day is to serve our whole community by offering practical information to help people’s quality of life in their senior years.”

Suggestions from last year’s seminar indicated people wanted advice about Wills and also about the changing nature of relationships in senior years.

Speakers who are experts in their fields will be addressing both those topics as well as others speaking on recognising serious health issues, engaging in meaningful activity in senior years and themes of hope and faith.

It will also be helpful for those who care for an older person.

Let’s celebrate Seniors Festival 2020 MIDCOAST Council’s jam-packed program of events for the NSW Seniors Festival has something for everyone aged 60 and older across the region.

Officially the Festival runs from 12 to 23 February, but Council’s celebrations begin on 10 February with a tea bag making workshop at Forster Library, and a morning of reminiscing at Great Lakes Historical Museum.

There are 30 events happening across the MidCoast including movie screenings at different Library locations, concerts, tai chi, yoga and meditation classes, a guided walking tour, behind the scenes tour of the Manning Entertainment Centre and the Manning Regional Art Gallery and more.

“Every year we put together a fantastic range of events to celebrate the NSW Seniors Festival and I’m really looking forward to our 2020 program,” said MidCoast Council Mayor, David West.

“With over half our population made up of seniors, it’s really important for us to organise fun, inclusive, social events for everyone to be able to get out and enjoy.”

NSW Seniors Festival is the largest Festival for Seniors in the Southern Hemisphere and provides a great platform for people aged 60 years and over to make new friends, catch up with old ones and have a great time.

Events are held all across the State and include art, sport, music, entertainment, technology, recreation and more.

Dennis Wilberforce and Garry Porter accounted for Graham Uff and Daryl Martin 16-10 and Col Saillard and Neil Kibble were far too strong for Col Walton and Peter Campbell, 35-3.

It was good to see that several new players trying their luck today.

It is by entering these competitions that their skill levels will be enhanced and that they know how much they need to improve.

2 February: The second round of the Club Minor Pairs competition was due to be played today with 8 teams competing.

The organisers bought the starting time forward to beat the heat, but in the end, the heat won with the competition being called off, with only a few ends played, when the mercury hit the red zone.

Some games have been re-scheduled for Wednesday and some for next Friday, weather permitting, so that the semi-finals can be played on Saturday and the finals next Sunday.

It was to be the last time that Graham Kelly plays in our Club competitions as he leaves for Budgewoi mid-month.

Graham has been a real stalwart of the Club during his time here acting in several roles on the management committee that saw him awarded the prestigious, “Clubman of the Year” award.

Graham has also been active in Pennant competitions over the years and will be missed by all his mates at Tea Gardens.

In other news: Nominations are still open for the Club Minor Singles competition commencing midFebruary.

Yet another opportunity for new players to improve their skills.

POLICE and Council records show the majority of disputes and callouts to be between neighbours and most likely over fence issues. So, if as the theme song goes, “good neighbours become good friends” it’s to everybody’s advantage to keep it that way!

You do have options that will keep the peace – provided there’s clear communication between both parties from the outset.

Firstly, you can legally issue a notice to comply which will obviously create tensions between you. So, if you can afford to, you might be quite happy to pay for the fence and know that you have a secure boundary that no doubt enhances your property. The security and peace of mind that provides may well override the cost issues. There is also another option that might be feasible.

You could enter an arrangement with your neighbour, whereby you pay for the fence up front and your neighbour pays you back in agreed instalments over an agreed period. Yes, it could get messy, but I know of numerous instances where this has been done and worked well for both parties. An open dialogue about the options would be an excellent start.

TUESDAY 28th January: Round 1 of the Club Championship Fours, interestingly all teams that won had big winning margins. No need to play to 21 ends in any of the games. On Rink 8 Sheila Rattray, Jan Coomer. Jeanette Emmett and Dot Dallas 27 v Bev Dunn, Pam Gilchrist, Maureen Campbell and Judy McGavock 11. On Rink 10 Judi Polak, Ingrid Luck, Jill McBride and Lynda Richards reached the score of 5 on the 3rd end but failed to win any ends after this ultimately losing to Bette Saillard, Bev Rhodes, Karen Green and Dale Winter 25 v 5. Karen McPhie played Skip in a team of "newcomers" Margaret Wigman, Leona Clissold and Irene Roberts. This was their first go in a Championship, the score not really indicative of their bowling against a more seasoned team.

Robyn Webster, Deyonne Page, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker winning 38 v 8. The lucky raffle winner was Deyonne Page, thanks to the Myall Bistro and Café for donating the raffle prize. No social bowls played. Before heading out to bowl a Spider was played, all money raised is donated to the Free Clinic Bus. The winner of the Spider was Sheila Rattray.

Thursday 30th January: Round 2 of the Fours Championship.

Robyn Beaumont, Liv Everingham, Lynne Green and Kayelene Pearson started strongly in their match against Robyn Webster, Deyonne Page, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker. On the 8th end they had a lead of 13 shots, by the 18th end this margin had increased to 17 shots. Pat's team made a late comeback gaining 5 shots on the next 2 ends. Unfortunately too late to change the outcome.
