At the cheque presentation hand over from the Grange Craft Group, discussion revolved around the unprecedented 2019/2020 fire season and reasons why the group had decided to support the local Rural Fire Brigade this year for their time, effort and hard work put in by all to keep not only our community safe from fires but also to those local members who were part of teams deployed out of area.

Noel Quince said, “we now have around sixteen new recruits joining the brigade with the first batch of eight due to finish their Basic Training next month.”

The Grange Craft Group hold in total 3 raffles each year with this donation being the proceeds from their Christmas Raffle.

“Whatever fundraising we do, we like to keep it local and we wanted to show our appreciation of what you have done for us over

this donation, monies donated will be and have already been used for purchases of new equipment, upgrades of both Tea Gardens and Pindimar Fire Stations and training facilities.”

COMMUNITY radio is coming to Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest with Myall Coast Radio 87.8FM seeking seed funding to start broadcasting this year.

This exciting local development gained momentum early last year when keen local business people established a Steering Committee, with broadcasting expertise, to obtain a licence.

On 30 October 2019, the Australian Communications and Media Authority granted a broadcasting licence to the Myall Waterways Chamber of Commerce.

Shortly after, an official test transmission was successfully conducted from 100 Booner Street, Hawks Nest: Myall Coast Radio 87.8FM was live.

In December, a public meeting about the not-for-profit initiative was held at the Uniting Church Hall, Tea Gardens.

It was well attended with around 28 volunteers committing to support the new radio station.

The first comprehensive review of the Family Law system, titled “Family Law for the Future” was released in April 2019 by the Australian Law Reform Commission, and it has stimulated a case management response from the Family Court.

The very first Joint Practice Direction of the 2 Family Courts issued on 28 January 2020 entitled: “Core Principles in the Case Management of Family Law Matters” and it is intended to be a step towards the harmonisation of the rules of the two family law courts. It applies to all family law applications - current and future.

A Practice Direction No. 2 of 2020: “Case Management in Family Law (Priority Property Pools under $500,000) Financial Cases” came into effect on 1 March

2020. It applies to family law applications filed in the Federal Circuit Court Registries of Parramatta, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne. It sets out the guiding principles for case management arrangements for cases where the property pool is under $500,000 net, including superannuation.

In late 2019, bills were reintroduced into Federal Parliament merging the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court into a new single court structure to be known as the Federal Circuit and Family Court. The merger bills have been referred to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee which is to report to the Parliament by November 2020.

My fellow travellers and I followed their progress from the rivers in Utah, passing through Durango, Colorado State until we reached Asteka, New Mexico State, where the Anasazi had felt confident enough to re-establish a settlement on flat land beside a flowing

today’s society. They were able to grow grains such as corn in more productive ways here on flat river land beside a clean stream than was possible on mountaintops.

This settlement at Asteka, New Mexico is the last known concentration of the Anasazi before they simply disappeared as a race of people. A theory is that they kept on moving south and broke up into smaller groups, with the result that some Mexican tribes claim to contain Anasazi relatives, but this is very hard to prove. We will look at some of the theories in article #6 as to why they moved, then moved on again and simply disappeared, all within less than a 30 year time frame.

New beginnings As expected the first council meeting of the year dealt with various matters that will assist people affected from the fires and drought to recover. All fees and charges relating to the redevelopment of properties identified by the RFS Building Impact Assessment Team as being damaged or destroyed will be waived. Many people undertaking to build or rebuild their own house often find themselves in temporary need of accommodation. Council has adopted guidelines to provide temporary accommodation onsite during the construction or rebuilding of a dwelling house.

Emergency Situations The recent bushfire crisis across the state has prompted many coastal communities questioning the need for or the perceived lack of plans, when in fact an emergency management structure exists.

Emergency management response is not under the control of council but the state government through the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) which leads, coordinates and develops capability in the emergency management

sector and conducts state-wide welfare and recovery operations when disaster strikes. The OEM is part of the NSW Department of Communities and Justice What is in place at a local level is the MidCoast EMPLAN. (Emergency Management Plan) Which details the emergency management arrangements across our LGA for all agencies involved in emergency response. The EMPLAN is supported by consequence management guides (CMG’s) which detail how each agency responds to a certain threats eg bushfire, flood etc. LEMC’s generally don’t have an emergency plan for each village or town, because in events like a bushfire the location of the threat changes and becomes very fluid and therefore the planning for response, evacuations and support remains very fluid as well.

Plans evolve constantly and if a plan was created then it also needs to be constantly updated.

In our area we have 3 natural disaster scenarios, fire, floods and storms. The most hazardous and frequent for most of our local communities is storms. Flooding is generally of little risk to life but fires can be savage when they happen and can affect multiple communities. There is a possibility of effect from a Tsunami but risk and damage is low.

Council has very recently been notified for funding from the Bushfire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Fund.

It is proposed to undertake a LGA wide education and resilience program around the existing local and state emergency management arrangements, including evacuation and response to future disasters, mitigation practices and the management of recovery etc. This would not be individual plans but letting everyone know that there are plans in place and what to do in certain circumstances.

Along with the Progress Association, I have arranged for an information evening regarding the local emergency management arrangements to be held on Monday 23rd March 7pm at the Baptist Church.

The MidCoast Cultural Plan 2036 will provide Council with a framework to work with the community to achieve actionable outcomes in relation to our creative industries.

The importance of cultural planning extends beyond arts and culture, recognising the broader lifestyle of residents, economic impacts and the experience of visitors.

Community consultation will begin in March with a range of creative and interactive events planned throughout the year to get the community involved.

The theme highlights how gender equality is important for communities to thrive and the role each person has in creating a gender equal world.

The first IWD was in 1911 in Europe, and 109 years later is an important global day celebrating women’s achievements and encouraging equality.

The idea of thinking globally and acting locally is behind the organisation of a Women’s High Tea at the North Arm Cove Community Hall on Monday 9 March.

The High Tea is an opportunity for local women to network and to be inspired by keynote presentations.

These will be by community leader and writer, Maureen Kelly, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), and by Joanne Trotter, a retired senior educator with recent volunteer experience in the slums of Kenya.

There is also an IWD Breakfast on 9 March at Murrook Culture Centre.

MUMMS on the Myall was the great riverside location for this year’s first Tea Gardens Lions Club dinner meeting on 26 February 2020.

Around 24 members attended the social dinner held to recognise service and to induct new members.

The meeting was chaired by local President, Peter Webb, and attended by the Lions Zone Chairman, Doug Allen.

Lion John Hill was recognised for 35 years of service.

Peter Webb stated, “Over the years John’s service has touched the lives of so many

Karuah and Stroud rivers plans RESIDENTS are being urged to view and share their thoughts on MidCoast Council’s Draft Floodplain Risk Management Studies and Plans for the Manning River as well as Karuah River and Stroud, that will be on public exhibition from Friday 28 February.

The draft management studies and plans were endorsed for exhibition at Wednesday’s Council meeting to provide community members, particularly residents of the Manning River, Karuah River and Stroud regions, an opportunity to understand Council’s draft plans and provide feedback on them.

The feedback provided will be incorporated into the final plans for each location and given the recent weather conditions, the reports are a timely assessment of the way Council manages these important floodplains.

“We’ve developed a revised flood study so that we can provide more technical information on flood behaviour in terms of

levels, velocity and extent of floods and this has allowed us to better understand and mitigate flood risk in these areas,” explained Rob Scott, MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services.

“We understand though that no one knows these areas as well as the people who live here and community participation is an integral part of the planning process so I would encourage the community to take a look at the draft documents and share their feedback.”

Council will be holding two information nights during the exhibition period for residents to be able to discuss their ideas with the consultants and staff who conducted the studies and prepared the plans.

These casual drop-in sessions are being held at Stroud Library on 10 March from 3pm to 6pm and Taree Council Committee Room on 12 March from 3pm to 6pm.

Mobile Recycling Trailer taking off again MIDCOAST Council’s Mobile Recycling Trailer is heading around the region again, kicking off this year’s tour on 27 February.

In 2019, the trailer collected almost 10 tonnes of hazardous problem waste and this year is expected to be no different.

The trailer will be attending a number of locations across the region, allowing residents to dispose of problem waste items, including gas bottles, paint, motor oils, car batteries, household batteries, fluoro globes and tubes, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers – all items that cannot be placed in any domestic bins (red, yellow or green).

“This is a great opportunity to get rid of problem household waste that can’t be put out in kerbside bins,

but it’s also a chance to chat to our knowledgeable staff,” said Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council’s Director of Liveable Communities.

“Bringing the trailer to localities across the region not only saves residents a trip to their nearest Waste Management Centre, users can drop in and chat with our waste team about how you can do your part in helping us reimagine the way we manage waste across the region.”

Local residents are encouraged to check their garages, sheds, laundries and under sinks to collect up to 20kg or 20 litres worth of items that can be dropped off for free to the trailer.

Clean Up Campaign for Pindimar / Bundabah

ONCE again the Local Residents-Rate Payers are to be congratulated and thanked for their participation in the Sunday’s Clean Up Australia Campaign.

The same accolade goes to the Community Members who consistently pick up tosser rubbish throughout the year.

Special thanks to Bob Dowling who liaises with MidCoast Council (MCC) and distributes the garbage bags and organises the mid-day barbeque for the doers.

We also must mention of the great effort by Mark and Kim Hill who covered over five kilometre of the area that morning.

Unfortunately MCC did not pre-slash the road verges which made it unsafe and harder for the Volunteers collecting the rubbish, this requirement needs to be addressed for next year.

The vast majority of the community appreciate this unique area and voluntarily keep it tidy, however there are always the odd user and abuser.

At this Clean-Up they have left clues to their identity by the location and number of tossed bourbon liquor cans, long necked brown paper bag beer bottles and the large number of cigarette buts at the bus pick

MUMS are such great organisers aren’t they?

Always prepared. Dib, dib, dib. Dob, dob, dob, as the scouts say, which I have just discovered is short for Do Your Best (DYB/DIB) and Do Our Best (DOB). I always thought it was to do with asserting your ownership over something or telling on a mate, which clearly isn’t the scout ethos at all.

Anyway, back to the issue of your mum. I don’t think there’s any harm in having a few spare items at home just in case things go a bit arse up. I mean if there’s mass flooding, or fires decimating huge swathes of land or baboons running through the streets because they don’t want vasectomies. You know, those sorts of things. And then to add a pandemic into the mix (not that we can call it that, but given the definition of it being the worldwide spread of a new disease then perhaps we are getting close), well, you know, Miss JS, if all those things were to happen, we’re not that far down the track from a zombie apocalypse really. Not meaning to worry you of course.

So hey, if Mrs S wants to head down to Aldi and buy a couple of crates of spaghetti tins, Longlife milk and Spam, who are we to argue with her.

I would just suggest that your mum shows a bit of restraint. You know, just get her to shop when the crowds have gone home because I can see her now in her face mask, one hand clutching a bottle of hand sanitiser, spraying every shelf with Glen 20 as she goes, refusing to accept change due to the spread of infection, glaring at every poor kid with a common cold. It might make people feel on edge.

If, however, your mum is onto something, then you will rue the day you didn’t listen to her. Mum’s the word.

Seniors Fours Championship MONDAY 24th February: Round 1 of NDWBA Seniors Fours Championship. TGWBC entered two teams in this event. Francis Betar, Robyn Webster, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker bowled at Hexham and defeated a team from Lemon Tree Passage skipped by Lynette Jordan, hence advancing to Round 2. Leona Clissold, Jan Coomer, Irene Roberts (all new bowlers) and Jeanette Emmett travelled to Nelson Bay and on a very heavy, slow green they lost to Patricia Skinner's team from Raymond Terrace.

Tuesday 25th February: TGWBC hosted 9 teams (our ladies had an "at home game"), competing in Round 2 of the Fours Championship. Unfortunately Pat Baker's team went down, bowling against a team from Soldiers Point, Skip Yvonne Corcoran. Rosita Ryan's side (Soldiers Point) were the winners of this Championship. Social bowls was played as usual, 2 games of Fours. A good win for Trish Ward, Leona Clissold, Lynda Richards and Maureen Campbell 25 v Jean Glover, Jan Coomer, Bev Rhodes and Jill McBride 11. A close contest between Irene Roberts, Lyn Nightingale, Deyonne Page and Loretta Baker winning 17 v 14 against Ingrid Luck, Judi Polak, Maynie Roberts and Bette Saillard. The winners on the day with the highest margin were Maureen's team.

Wednesday 26th February: Robyn Beaumont, Lynda Richards, Dale Winter and Lynne Green competed in NDWBA Open Fours Competition played at Wallsend. No good news to report from here we had a loss against Ann Cheetham, Lisa Davies, Suzanne Gunness and Delma Price from Lemon Tree

The rink 1 team, skipped by Alan Greenhalgh, had a great win 19-14 but the remaining teams struggled with the corrugations and undulations of rinks 2 and 3.

They were heavily beaten and Bayway won 88-32.

1 March: A beautiful autumn day allowed the final of the Club Minor Singles and the final of the Club Minor Pairs games to be played in excellent conditions and in front of a large and knowledgeable gallery.

The minor Singles featured Graham Reynold taking on Merv Mills.

As anticipated it was a cracker of a game and lasted 36 ends.

Merv was slow out of the blocks and it was not until the 7th end that he started to fire.

He hit the lead at the 12th end and was never headed after that winning the match 31-24.

Well played!

In the Club Minor Pairs, Vic Garlick and Doug Andrews took on Terry Munright and Ron Webster.

This game never reached the dizzy heights that might have been expected as Vic and Doug just piled on the points from the get-go.

Terry and Ron had no answer to the onslaught finally going down 10-22.

In other news: The nomination form for the Major Pairs is on the board and there is plenty of room for more teams Nominations close on the 9th March. Round 1starts on the 15th March.

Pennant Season Starting

29 February: The first round of the Newcastle District Pennant season commenced today with Tea Gardens Grade 4 side playing Hamilton North at home.

Good wins by all teams secured the Master Board.

Tea Gardens winning 65-41.

Grade 6 also played at home taking on Bar Beach.

A good win to the Danny Johnson team was not enough to secure the points with the remaining two teams recording narrow losses.

Bar Beach won the contest by one shot 59-58 Grade 7 (1) played away at the fickle Fingal Bay Club and could not manage a win although two teams had close games. The remaining four lost heavily.

Fingal bay winning the contest 66-40.

The Grade 7 (2) side travelled down to Bayway Village to play their match.
