By Margie TIERNEY AS of last Sunday, the way we shop has changed, with major Myall Coast Retailers, Coles and IGA, putting an end to single use plastic carry bags.

Following Aldi’s lead, shoppers will have to spend 15 cents for a plastic bag to carry their goods, or opt for an alternative, such as a Boomerang Bag. Volunteers with the group were in high spirits outside IGA in Hawks Nest last Saturday morning as they marked the end of the free plastic bag era with a big sale of their $2 fabric bags.

“For instance, a lady came out of IGA with her arms full of groceries and said I need to buy some bags to carry my groceries.”

“That’s the point of the whole exercise,” Julie said.

“We started off with over 150 bags this morning and we’re down to just a few.”

“My vision for the pub is to reconnect with the people of Bulahdelah and their families and friends. This will take hard work and time, but it will definitely be worth it.”

In addition to reengaging the local community, Anthony said improving public facilities adjacent to the hotel, including parks and access to the Myall River, are part of his plans to encourage more visitors to the area.

“I believe in Bulahdelah and really want everyone to see what a great place it is,” he said.

“It is such a warm and

Budget Brings Benefits A Strong NSW economy has delivered benefits for residents of the Myall Coast region, with plenty of cash splashed in the recent State Budget.

A STRONG NSW economy has delivered benefits for residents of the Myall Coast region, with plenty of cash splashed in the recent State Budget.

Addressing representatives from the regions’ Chambers of Commerce last week, NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the Budget is built on the back of solid economic management, enabling the Government to offer something for everyone.

“The NSW economy has been exceptionally strong over the last few years with the outlook for growth to remain above trend for the next three years,” he said.

“This would mark six years of above trend economic growth for NSW, a feat not seen since the 1990s.”

In addition to the $50 million splurge for MidCoast roads and the million-dollar upgrade for Tea Gardens Police Station recently announced by the NSW Premier, member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said the Budget also includes many initiatives “to help ease the cost of living” for families.

“The new Creative Kids Rebate provides families with a $100 voucher per school aged child for extra-curricular activities such as music, drama, coding and language classes, complementing the existing Active Kids Rebate announced in last year’s Budget,” he said.

“We will be establishing an online ‘one-click energy switch’ program through Service NSW, allowing consumers to find and change to the cheapest energy deals in the market.”

Mr Bromhead said establishing a “Cost of Living Service” to provide easy access to rebates and concessions, subsidising preschooling, slashing registration fees for caravanners and reducing the cost of Compulsory Third Party Green Slips are amongst the many initiatives aimed at “putting more money back into the pockets of families”.

“It is satisfying to be part of a Government who is delivering for the people of Myall Lakes,” he said.

Bulahdelah Hospital is aiming to raise sufficient funds to supply 14 of these special CuroCell mattresses to palliative care patients in Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Karuah, Stroud, Booral, Bulahdelah and the Seal Rocks area.

But these mattresses don’t come cheap, each costing over $2,200.

A Sock Full of Puppets There’s lots of interesting and fun activities at the Tea Gardens Library to keep the children occupied during the July School Holidays.

THERE’S lots of interesting and fun activities at the Tea Gardens Library to keep the

children occupied during the July School Holidays.

A puppet making workshop combines history and creativity for children

aged five and up.

“We’ll supply all the materials including the sock for the children to decorate,” Librarian Chris Shelly said.

“If they want to decorate more than one we suggest they bring a second one in.”

“We’ve decided the children can have free rein in regards to what they put on their puppet.”

“And we’re hoping at the end that we’ll be able to put a bit of production around the puppets with singing and performing.”

The art of puppetry dates back some 3 thousand years.

“It’s an ancient form of storytelling, so it fits quite nicely with the Library.”

Chris added, “A lot of children will identify with puppets such as the Muppets,

but it actually goes back thousands of years and many countries such as Japan and Indonesia have added their own culture to it.

“The Indonesians have shadow puppetry and we’d like to just make it fun for the children but give them a bit of history at the same time.”

“It’s a great way to communicate social messages such as sharing, good manners, how to make nice friends or how to help someone who may be being bullied.”

The puppet workshop is being held on Wednesday 18 July at 2.30 pm.

Work starts on Tourist Park PERSISTENCE has paid off as work on a new tourist park at Bulahdelah is now underway, with the first sod of soil recently turned at River Myall Holiday Resort at the Stroud Street site.

Stage one of the multimillion-dollar project includes the construction of 70 camping and caravan sites, a pool, tennis court, office

‘Beyond Red Cross Supports PCYC the Lenz’

A NEW Art and Photography Gallery is about to open its doors in Tea Gardens.

‘Beyond the Lenz’ is a longed for dream come true for local Award Winning Photographer Louise Richards.

“I picked up the camera when I was just 10 years of age and ran with it,” Louise told News Of The Area.

“I’ve been working towards this for years.”

“I always wanted my own shop to showcase my works but I also wanted somewhere for other photographers and artists to have the same opportunity,” Louise said.

The Gallery will cater to both professional and amateur photographers.

“It’s a very artistic community that we live in so I want to share our talented artists with everyone.”

Along with the works on the wall, Louise is also offering lessons and supplies, digital photo printing, framing, canvas and acrylic and HD metal prints.

“You don’t have to be a member of a club to use my facilities or learn the craft,” Louise said.

Louise is inviting the community to a Grand Opening of ‘Beyond the Lenz’ this Saturday 7 July from 6pm to 9pm.

“Come along and meet our featured Artists and Photographers over a complimentary glass of champagne and finger food,” Louise said.

A gold coin donation would be appreciated at the door, with all proceeds going to the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research.

If you can’t wait for the Grand Opening, the gallery will be open for business from 10am to 2pm on Saturday 7 July.

‘Beyond the Lenz’ is located in the Myall Street Plaza, Shop 3, 205 Myall Street, Tea Gardens.

THE history of the Red Cross in Australia dates back more than 90 years, but the society continues to support our country’s younger generation.

Recently, Snr Constable Rob Wylie was the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Red Cross in Tea Gardens.

His subject, the work he does with the local youth at the Police Citizens Youth Club.

Helen Janes told News Of The Area, “Rob Wylie was representing Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens Boxing Club.”

The PCYC, which is now housed in the Hawks Nest Scout Hall, is home to

25 youths, both male and female who are learning the art of boxing every Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re very grateful to the Scouts for providing a place for us to train,” Rob Wylie said.

The ladies of the Red Cross were also impressed with Rob’s talk on how boxing builds self confidence and skills for life management.

At the end of his talk the Red Cross presented Rob with a cheque $150 for the PCYC. “We hope it will help to encourage our youth of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest to participate.”

The Red Cross meets in the Masonic Hall in Tea Gardens every last Monday of the month.

New members are always welcome.

Dear News Of The Area SUPERANNUATION is on everybody’s mind including the Governments. Industry Funds versus Retail Funds. For a decade or so now,Superannuation has been compulsory for workers and employers contributing equal amounts,around 10%. When we compare the current old age pension with superannuation ,one must ask the question. “Is it all worth it”.The old Age pension is around $24000 per year.In order to generate that income from an investment, one would have to have $1.2million invested in the bank. In order to acquire $1.2million, you would have to work for 50 years, contributing at least $12000/y and the employer contributing the another $12000/y. I realise that the amount would be compounding ,but,inflation would eat into some of its value. It is my understanding at present ,that an Old Aged Pensioner can have almost $500,000 in savings and still receive the full Aged Pension together with all the benefits, rates,rego,phone,gas,medical assistance ,etc, potentially worth up to another $3000.Altogether a pensioner could have up to $27000 to live on.

We have been hearing for decades now that we must save for our retirement years as there will be no pension when we get older.

Well, from past and current observations,the pension has certainty ,consistently increasing twice yearly with one of the best of the 3 measures(CPI,Basket of Goods or Percentage of the Basic Wage) ,whereas Super is at the mercy of market forces. The Government even borrows the money to pay welfare.The current Welfare bill is around $190billion a year,almost 1/3 of the budget,but when the Government announces it’s paying “$50billion over 10 years” for submarines and we freak out. Time after time we hear the phrase”I’ve paid my taxes,I’m entitled to a pension”. These people need to consider that during their life,they used the hospitals,roads, schools and other facilities. I have said on numerous occasions “you cannot have the best Welfare System in the World and have the best hospitals, schools, roads, etc”. The Pension is the winner here.

By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 26th June: A good turn up of bowlers for social bowls. Format for play was 4 games of 3 bowls Triple, 18 ends.

Ingrid Luck playing “swinger second”, and a game of 3 bowls Pairs, 18 ends. Sheril Johnson, Ingrid Luck and Pam Gilchrist had a good win against Lynne Nightingale, Ingrid and Carol Hayden 24 v 15. Scoring a massive 6 shots on the last end ensured victory for Pam’s team. Jeanette Emmett, Dorothy Thompson and Lynda Richards lead all the way against Judi Polak, Carolyn Bywater and Jill McBride. Thanks to some great bowling by Dorothy, the result 15 v 10. Bev Dunn, Julie Kennedy and Karen McPhie held a lead of 2 shots at the completion of the 8th end. Then, Lily Smith, Christine Fossey and Dale Winter scored 8 shots on the 9th end, then 3 shots on the 10th end. Difficult to make a come back when the opposition has a 9 shot lead. Karen’s team went down 15 v 23. Sandra Leisemann, Wendy Brand and Elizabeth Kelly were in control of their game from the start to the finish defeating Bette Saillard, Robyn Webster and Loretta Baker 18 v 10. As would be expected the Pairs game was a very tough battle between Lorraine Longman (visiting bowler) and Maynie Roberts v Lorraine Murphy and Kayelene Pearson. On the 6th end 6 all, by the 8th end Maynie’s team leading by 7 shots. No points scored over the next 6 ends for Lorraine and Maynie. Lorraine and

Kayelene now holding a lead of 1 shot. The 15th end 14 all, the 18th end final score 17 v 16. The win going to Lorraine and Maynie.

The winners on the day, winning with the lowest score were Jeanette, Dorothy and Lynda. Following play Club president Robyn Webster presented Karen McPhie, winner of the Club Championship Minor Singles 2018 her badge and runner up Lynda Richards her certificate. Everyone enjoyed lunch catered

If you keep being a fixer like good old Christopher Pyne, your husband will not learn to stand on his own two (wobbly) legs and take responsibility for his actions. You need to empower him by saying, ‘You have made a decision to get rotten drunk, and I respect that. Now respect me as I book into a resort with my non-vomiting girlfriend. Call me when it’s safe to come home. Oh, by the way, the kids have two assignments due, AFL training and a dance concert.’

You mentioned new carpet. You know, polished concrete is the current floor covering of choice for a reason. It looks stylish and you can just hose out anything left behind by children, dogs and drunk husbands. It may be time to revise your decorating decisions.

Finally, I’ve got to ask why he didn’t make it to the bathroom. I was brought up in a family where my mother told me from an early age, ‘I don’t do vomit.’ Even as a three-year-old, I would have made it to the tiled floor. He could have at least thrown up on the quilt or himself. Tonight, before you leave for your resort, I suggest you make up a plastic chair in the shower for him, complete with pillow protector, till he learns a bit of self control.

My husband has been working extremely hard, but last night he went next door and drank bootleg liquor. On his return, he was swaying and rambling. Eventually he went to bed, but then needed to throw up. He didn’t make the bathroom, instead projectile vomiting all over the new carpet.

27 JUNE: Nominated Triples were played today with 49 Bowlers playing on the artificial green.

After 500ml of rain so far this month the grass green would welcome the chance to recover.

It was the “old and the bold” team of Bob Skewes, Barry Drayton and Ron Webster that won the day with 57 points.

29 June: Considering the fact that the Saturday Pennant competition is still underway, there was a good field contesting the Friday Open format today.

Saturday Pennants has but another two weeks to run and then there will be some focus on Friday Open Pairs.

The Jeff Baker four, that took a bit of a pasting at their last encounter, had a great win winning 27-19, but the remaining teams could not emulate this result and both suffered losses.

Mayfield West winning the match 69-49.

The Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 6 side kept their momentum going winning their encounter with a determined Lemon Tree Passage side 66-53.

Two matches were close with the Danny Johnson

team being edged out on the last two ends to lose 19-23, and the Anthony Grant four pulling of a great win 18-16.

The Ron James four clinched the win with a commanding 29-14 win.

Next week Grade 4 plays at home against Mayfield and Grade 6 has a bye.

1 July: It was another great bowling day in paradise.

This morning 18 bowlers turned out for 12 ends of triples in the Sunday bowls competition.

After much deliberation a winner was eventually from

the team with the highest winning score.

They were; Bev Stephens, Bev Dunn and Sue Morris.

The Lucky Door prize was won by Vaughan and Irena.

Sunday bowlers enjoyed the cuisine of visiting chef Dave Perry.

The Sunday bowls was followed by the first round of the Club Triples Championship with the team of; Ray Sullivan, Mark Hair and Richard Lee taking on Ken Devlin, Ross Barry and Keith Smith in one game and the team of; Vic Garlick,

Neville Vaughn and Danny Johnson opposing, Peter King, Peter Cheney and John Slater in the other.

The remaining 8 teams enjoyed a bye.

The Richard Lee side held the lead for most of their match until the penultimate end where they dropped a 7.

This sealed their fate, with the Keith Smith three running out winners 26-22.

In the other match the John Slater three held an early lead 15-4 and retained a slim margin until the 17th end where they conceded an

unfortunate 5.

They fought back to regain the lead and held a 1 shot advantage going into the last end.

They held shot in that end however Danny converted to take 2 to win the match 2423.

A great game!

There should be some great viewing next week with the Grade 4 Pennant side seeking a home ground win on Saturday and the second round of the Club Championship Triples being played on Sunday
