Champagne flows at Biggest Morning Tea THE champagne flowed as more than 70 people packed the atrium of the Tea Gardens Hotel last Friday for ‘The Biggest Fundraiser.

The event, to raise money for the Cancer Council, was organised by our local Boomerang Bags group with the help of the Pearls of Port Stephens.

“We were a bit worried earlier in the week that we wouldn’t get the numbers, but this is an amazing turnout,” Julie Sims said.

“We’re overwhelmed it’s a great success.”

“Shane and Geoffrey, the raffle girls, have been absolutely inundated,” Julie said with a laugh about the husbands of the Boomerang women who helped out on the day.

“We had to leave the venue twice to get more raffle tickets from the Hawks Nest Newsagency which they kindly donated.”

"It's a great idea that was suggested to us and it made so much sense," Mick Wright said.

"All the local Community Groups will have the opportunity to give a brief commentary of its previous month, or outline some items upcoming in future months."

Of course the paper is still restricted by number of pages it can print, however it is hopeful that with the Community's support it may be able to secure extra local advertisers which will actually then increase the pages that NOTA can print.

"We plan to offer some very attractive advertising rates to do this," Mr Wright said.

"If the price is low [enough], then it's much more sustainable for a business to advertise long-term, as part of its marketing plan."

Slipway Protest Rally

AS we go to Print, representatives from Crown Lands, MidCoast Council, Tea Gardens Slipway Association and Myall River Action Group are preparing to meet over the unexpected shutdown of the Tea Gardens Slipway.

Last week hundreds of people joined in a protest rally at snap decision by Crown Lands to effectively close down the slipway near ANZAC Park.

Paul Bendy, President of the local Slipway Association said, “The shutdown is purely based on the assumption that the slipway could ‘potentially’ pollute the river.”

Over its long history there has never been any reports of environmental damage from the slipway.

“Our members can’t maintain their vessels and if there’s a major emergency we have to go through two marine sanctuaries and oyster leases to get to Nelson Bay.” “We don’t want to be on the news because of an environmental disaster, which could happen if our boats aren’t maintained.”

Kerry Macintosh, who has a Government contract to run the effluent boat, more commonly referred to as the ‘poo boat’ said, “We had an emergency a while back, we got half way up the river and water started coming in, a seal had melted, we got it back to Tea Gardens but we would have sunk if we had to go over to the Bay.”

PROTEST RALLY: Tea Gardens Slipway An emergency is Paul Bendy’s worst fear, “I don’t differentiate this service from Police, Fire and Ambulance service it’s exactly the same.”

Despite the Crown Lands restriction on repairs and maintenance being carried out at the Slipway Paul said, “We will respond in any emergency and stand by this community, then deal with the fines later.”

If such an emergency was to happen, the fines are hefty, up to $220,000 for the Association a day, $110,000 for individuals per day.

“We’ve had 10 emergencies in the past two years, some major, some minor but what would have happened if we didn’t have this slipway,” Paul said.

The Tea Gardens Slipway Association has been working for years to upgrade the slipway and a DA. Is now with MidCoast council, what’s lacking is the hundreds of thousands of dollars needed to fund the project.

Winda Woppa Association President Ken Garrard said, “5,000 cubic metres was placed on the pinch point a little more than a month ago and recent weather events have eroded sufficient sand to nearly exposing the STS infrastructure.”

“Without renourishing the sand at the pinch point we are again in a precarious situation.”

MidCoast Council says it’s STS contractors

are working non-stop to come up with a solution to the problem.

It’s also understood Council is looking to return to its previous method of trucking sand onto Jimmy’s Beach.

The STS, with its 10 pumping stations, was scheduled to start operations last month.

MidCoast Council had planned for two campaigns for this year, one in April and then September to replenish the sands on Jimmy’s Beach, which has suffered from major erosion problems for over 30 years.

Your Say on Council’s Forward Plans MIDCOAST Council’s commitment on the services and activities the community can expect to be delivered during the 2019-20 year and proposed fees and charges is now on public exhibition.

The 2019-20 Operational Plan, presented alongside the three year delivery program and 2019-20 fees and charges is open for community feedback until 4.30pm Wednesday 19 June.

The document also includes the budget for the coming year and outlines how and where funds will be spent.

“We invite members of the public to provide feedback on these documents, which will then go back to Councillors for adoption,” General Manager Adrian Panuccio explained.

“Once adopted these documents become an important delivery checklist across all areas of Council.

“The plans provide an overview of where we are headed, a detailed outline of deliverables and the performance criteria against which we will measure our progress.”

Mr Panuccio said an important focus for the coming year will be on a range of transformational projects that will take MidCoast Council into the next phase of integration and providing services for our community.

“Many of these projects focus

on improving the internal business processes of Council, and this work is critical to ensure that direct services to the community are delivered efficiently and effectively.”

During the coming year Council will also be working across all facets of Council business to deliver: improvements to significant recreational facilities, the Civic Precinct project providing a new innovative library space and customer service point for the Forster community, development of a Cultural Plan, and the implementation of support strategies for our youth and ageing sectors.

“Work will continue on the development of a MidCoast wide local environmental plan and development control plan to allow for a common approach to development applications and we will begin design work on improvements to both water and sewer services for the Gloucester region.”

Len Roberts starts Defamation Case CR LEN ROBERTS has issued “Concerns Notices” under the Defamation Act against a number of people and organisations which he claims have defamed him.

The notices refer to articles published in the Manning Community News and various Facebook pages and posts.

Cr Roberts is seeking any unlawful defamatory publication or communication to cease, the removal of any offensive material, the publishing of a full apology and compensation for the expense and harm already caused.

Cr Roberts is represented

by Bromhead Legal in making

this stand against malicious and hurtful comment in public debate.

Solicitor Greg McInnes argues that Cr Roberts has served his community with integrity for many years, and agrees the need to prevent others becoming the target of such attacks.

“Publishers need to take responsibility for the cruel, damaging and malicious comments they allow to be carried in their publications.

“We have a very strong case and recent court judgments have come down heavily upon reckless publications and irresponsible social media posts,” said Mr McInnes.

Cr Roberts has drawn comparisons with the ugly attacks made on social media against a Gloucester Dog Pound business, which was recently forced to close after providing a service to that local community for 15 years.

“I hope that by taking this strong approach against social media trolls and unregulated publishers, I can prevent another

family suffering the kind of abuse that my family has had to endure,” said Cr Roberts.

“Enough is enough.”

“I believe the perpetrators are acting like cowards and that we are striking back for those without a voice,” said Cr Roberts.

“I will continue to take the necessary legal steps to protect and restore my reputation in the community I have served for many years.”

CR ROBERTS said, "I would like to thank the many people who have supported me through this difficult time and who knew that the truth would eventually come out.”

Bernie moved to Newcastle in 2002 and spent 6 months programming backing tracks in his home studio, and then ventured out into the Pubs and Clubs performing.

26 May. An early start for the “Sevens’ trekking

back to Nelson Bay given the task of winning their game against Fingal Bay and hoping that Nelson Bay would be defeated in their match.

Tea Gardens came up just 5 shots short of a victory but it was to no avail as Nelson Bay had a comfortable win to go into the final.

For the “mighty sevens” it was game, set, and match and the hopes of winning a flag will have to wait until next year.

Well done the ‘sevens’ you did us proud!

There were another three matches played today in the Club Major Singles with some wonderful bowls being played.

Jeff Baker continued on his winning way beating Ross Barry 31-26.

Merv Mills gave Mark Hair a good work out over 38 ends with Mark sneaking home 31-25.

The “metronomic” Col Saillard accounted for Danny Johnson 31-25.

The Club Major Singles Championship will continue next weekend with all the favourites coming to the fore.

TEA Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News 22 May Wow! a beautiful day on the greens to be playing bowls with 48 players taking part in 2 games of Triples using both greens.

The winners came from the second game and the successful teams were Rob Young, Ron Green and Brian Emmett on +15, and Bob Peady, Mike Dellaca and Alan Greenhalgh on +17.

The lucky draw went to Neil Kibbles team of Rob Jones and Chris May. Mark Nightingale won the Myall Bistro voucher.

25 May The Pennant season is over for the First National Grade 4 and Grade 6 sides but the “mighty sevens” have made the Sectional playoffs and assembled at Nelson Bay to take on other Sectional winners.

Their first game today was against Lowlands BC with both teams playing on very slow greens.

Tea Gardens came out on top and won this match comfortably by about 14 shots.

Unfortunately, in the afternoon, they came up against host Club Nelson Bay on another “doughy” green.

Victory for bowlers q The victorious Karuah bowlers with their spoils, the NDBA Pennant.

FOUR Pennant teams in different grades went out this year from the Karuah Bowls Club, one learned a lot but didn’t do real well, another just missed the finals, the third got to the quarter finals, and on Sunday, one of the four won.

In a year where the Club punched well above its weight, a pennant win was the icing on the cake.

Greg Pearson the Grade 4 Captain said, “The victory was even sweeter as they had to beat a team in the Final that had beaten them just weeks before, on their home green at Raymond Terrace.”

To make the finals the men from Karuah had to finish in the top 2 teams of a 10 team section and then play a final series against the best teams from 3 other 10 team sections.

The finals were played this last weekend with 8 teams playing off on Saturday and then Sunday morning.

The final was played Sunday afternoon in front of a big crowd of both Raymond Terrace and Karuah fans and the team from the little club at Karuah came up trumps.

The Karuah Club celebrated the win back at the Karuah RSL, mindful that they would be back to playing social Club games this Tuesday and Thursday.

They were also aware that they would be playing in the State Pennant winners finals at Port Macquarie late next month.
