By Sandra MURRAY AFTER a short respite, the East Coast Low staged an impressive return from the 25 July with further heavy rainfalls and winds smashing an already badly eroded Jimmys Beach and causing localised flooding.

The MidCoast Council reported that there was insufficient time between these two weather events to rebuild the beach sand buffer using the Sand Transfer System (STS).

It takes at least two to three weeks to set the STS ready for pumping with the last similar task taking eight weeks to transfer approximately 30,000m³ to Jimmys.

However, the Council did mobilise a bulldozer to scrape sand to recreate a buffer in front of the exposed

The keys to the brand new two-bay facility were handed over by Bert Pipan,

Operations Officer, Lower Hunter Fire Control.

Funded by the NSW Government, the $1.1 million dollar station is now operational from 24 July.

Moving forward, the Council is considering transferring sand via the dredge to Jimmys earlier this August instead of September, as well as replacing the hay bales.

The weather also resulted in NSW National Parks closing all beaches in Myall Lakes to all 4WD. Penalties apply for noncompliance with the decision to be reviewed on 28 July.

an Ordinary Meeting on 22 July that was webcast and recorded, in compliance with COVID conditions.

Questions continue about big increases in the cost of consultants (from around $2.6, to $7m) and staff costs, as well as into the so far missing tenyear Long Term Financial Plan needed to support strategic planning, understand funding requirements, and improve community consultation.

Separately and on request, the Council granted permission to ABC Radio, Myall Coast Radio and 2Bob Radio to reproduce audio recordings of their meetings.

The next Ordinary Meeting is 26 August.

COVID remains a serious issue for NSW with 151 active

cases, increasing over the last week.

Local hotspots (with 3 active cases as at 26 July) include Anna Bay, Boat Harbour, Bobs Farm, Corlette, Fingal Bay, Gan Gan, Nelsons Bay, Salamander Bay, Shoal Bay and Soldiers Point.

The Port Stephens Ferry Service has again been suspended to keep communities separated and safe.

Entry restrictions are now in place for most hotels and clubs, for all residents of government identified hotspots.

NSW Health urges everyone to have a COVID-19 test and isolate themselves right away if any respiratory symptoms like fever, cough, sore/scratchy throat, or shortness of breath (even if very mild) appear.

It’s a new financial year, so it is time to understand the superannuation contributions for self-managed superannuation funds.

The concessional contributions (CC) include: • Compulsory employer contributions • Salary sacrifice contributions • Personal tax deductible contributions For persons aged under and over 50 years, the CC is $25,000.

The non-concessional contributions (NCC) for this financial year, include: • Personal after tax contributions • Spouse contributions • Contributions which exceeded your concessional gap For persons aged under 75 years, the NCC is $100,000.

Taxpayers with a total super balance over $1.6m will not be able to make NCC. NCC cap exemptions include: • Proceeds from settlement of personal injury • Government cocontribution payments • Rollovers from taxed superannuation funds • Proceeds from sale of small business CGT assets up to

cap limit (i.e. $1.565m) • D o w n s i z e r contributions up to lifetime $300,000 limit.

Members can claim the maximum tax offset of $540 when their spouse’s income is $37,000 or less. This amount reduces if the spouse’s income is over $37,000 up to the amount of $40,000. Spousal income includes, assessable income, total reportable fringe benefits and reportable employer super contributions.

If a spouse exceeds its NCC for the year, or has a total super balance of greater than $1.6m, then there will be no tax offsets available.

Members can split up to 85% of their CC each year with their spouse providing the spouse is less than 65 years, not retired, and the application is lodged within a specific time frame.

It is crucial to speak with a financial planner or adviser about any contributions and to inform your solicitor of your superannuation arrangements in any estate planning context or review.

Council watching Jimmys Closely MIDCOAST Council is watching Jimmys Beach closely as weather forecasts indicate further coastal erosion is possible.

“Wind and swell direction resulting from the current east coast low weather event could result in further erosion at Jimmys Beach,” said Council’s Coastal Management Coordinator, Andrew Staniland.

Although sand has been moved onto the most critical part of the Beach since last week’s storm,

“Erosion at Jimmys Beach has long been identified and managed

by Council. The current situation of two events close to each other is identified in the Coastal Zone Management Plan, highlighting how vulnerable this section of our coast is,” added Mr Staniland.

$126,000 Grant for Delhuntie Youth Care

DELHUNTIE Youth Care has received a State Government Grant of $126,000 under the Stronger Country Community Program.

The not-for-profit provides wilderness-based adventure therapy out of their Bulahdelah centre, working to provide programs for those struggling with mental health issues for the last seven years.

Rob Kent, Manager of Delhuntie Youth Care, said that their programs aim to educate local adults and youths on how to effectively manage life challenges in a healthy and holistic way.

“We’re thrilled to have State Government recognise and support the many important programs we offer for suicide prevention and to build resilience in youths,” he said.

“The Grant will help fund not only the initiatives that we run out of local high

schools across the Myall Lakes, which include rock climbing, abseiling, and other physical challenges that help teach resilience, but also the other programs based out of our Bulahdelah centre.”

“In the last year alone, we’ve gone through significant bushfires, drought, flooding and now, COVID-19, so mental health should be a big focus moving forward.”

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead MP, said, “We have had sadly a number of young people in our area over the past 12 months who have taken their own lives,” said Mr Bromhead.

“The organisation has for a number of years ran a number of very successful programs assisting our youth in crisis.”

Delhuntie Youth Care is typically self-funded, and welcomes any support from Government, businesses, or the general public.

Hearing Loss Facemasks

FOR the hearing impaired the use of PPE in medical and community settings causes a block to communication as they make lip reading impossible while potentially muffling sounds.

Local Simone Jolly RN is an Audiologist practicing at Salamander Bay who is passionate about improving communication.

Using a facemask with a clear plastic window makes it possible for those who lip read to be able to communicate in healthcare and community settings.

Simone Jolly told News Of The Area, “The communicator-style face masks are hard to buy in Australia, but there are some places online selling versions of them.“ Simone has been proactive and made her own when she found that her

clients were unable to hear me when I wore surgical or paper masks.

As current guidelines are that cloth masks are an acceptable option for masks, there are free patterns online for a few styles of masks with windows to help the hearing impaired.

One site with a free pattern is https://www. hsdc.org/accessible-deaffriendly-face-mask/ “Masks are believed to reduce the spread of the virus, but they can significantly degrade the clarity of the speech signal and reduce the volume by about 12dB, as well as preventing the listener from using lip cues to assist hearing.”

Standing 1.5m apart on top of this further compounds these issues.

Simone shared the following strategies that might help if you are speaking with a hearing

impaired person and only have a normal mask to use include asking the person what their preferred method of communication would be - a lot of hearing impaired people are used to letting people know their communication needs; make sure you get the person’s attention before speaking; use visual cues; speak slowly and louder than normal (but don’t shout as this distorts the sound); use writing, text or a transcription App to enable the person to read the message (an example of a transcription app is Google Transcribe or for Live Transcribe).

It is also important to be patient and allow the person to ask for repetitions if needed and find a different way of repeating information if they miss it the first time.

We should remember that background noise can make it harder to hear and if it is safe

use a communicator style face mask or face shield.

For those who are hearing impaired it is important to let people know about your hearing loss and to consider other methods of communication.

Simone implores people to wear their hearing aids if they have them as this will they help you hear but they also let others know that you have a hearing impairment.

“Get your hearing aids checked by your hearing care provider if you are having difficulty – ask whether there are other devices such as microphones that can be used in conjunction with your hearing aids that might help you hear over distance, and don’t be afraid to ask people to repeat something if you didn’t hear it” she said.

Simone reminds us all to be kind to ourselves and each other in these challenging times.

Temporarily halting Ferry Service appreciation

Dear News Of The Area, Congratulations Port Stephens Ferry Service for the exceptional goodwill shown recently by temporarily halting last week's ferry service across Port Stephens in case they inadvertently brought the virus from

the southern shore to Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest as a result of the small number of Salamander Shopping Center and nearby sports ground infections.

The Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest community of a couple of thousand ‘ over 55-year old’s’ together with the two well occupied aged

Koalas extinct by 2050 According to a recent report by a parliamentary committee, koalas could be extinct in NSW within 30 years unless urgent action is taken.

ACCORDING to a recent report by a parliamentary committee, koalas could be extinct in NSW within 30 years unless urgent action is taken.

The report concluded that current laws were inadequate in protecting the species and actually facilitated the clearing of core koala habitats.

It also highlighted that the habitats needed to be better protected from logging, mining, land clearing and urban development.

In Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, the koala population is listed as an endangered population under the TSC Act, with less than 20 animals remaining.

Ian Morphett, Secretary at Myall Koala & Environment Group, said that the Myall Coast koalas have certainly been affected by certain issues raised in the report.

“The Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens koalas were officially declared endangered in 1999, when it was estimated that there were about 12 koalas,” he said.

“Once the Koala Recovery Plan was introduced in 2004, the local population recovered somewhat, however, in recent years our urban population has slowly declined, mostly due to loss of habitat.”

Mr Morphett continued, “Of particular impact has been the cutting down of about 20

I will confess that I went on a search after your conundrum to see if I could find the offending footage and I quickly came across the video of this woman ranting at the poor Bunnings staff. I mean don't they have enough to deal with with customers who can't remember the shade of white they want to paint their coffee table or who can't find their husband because he said he was going to aisle 37 and he's not there, without having to deal with some middleclass legal studies dropout pain-in-the-neck with a patronising chai-latte-laced-withProzac tone who suggests she can have the poor Bunnings staff member 'personally sued' for merely trying to follow their Covidsafe protocol?

Personally sued? Is this woman insane? Actually, I think therein lies the answer. The coronavirus has unearthed a whole lot of people who have way too much time on their hands and who spend countless hours falling down conspiracy theory rabbit holes only to climb out and start ranting at service and healthcare workers who are just trying to do their job.

Seriously, how is wearing a mask a breach of human rights? We are not being asked to shrink wrap our bodies. We are not being asked to wear a full suit of armour. And we most certainly aren't being asked to spend hours at a time sweating in full PPE gear unless we are one of the healthcare workers who deal with those poor individuals who have become ill. We are simply being asked to consider the health and safety of others so more people don't get sick and we can get back to some semblance of normality.

I tell you, June, I think many of us have lost a bit of faith in humanity lately and people like this woman aren't doing much to remedy that. I wish both you and your child health and happiness.

IN mid-July on a cold and windy day, a team of MidCoast Council electricians installed four world class new LED floodlights in Hawks Nests’ Moira Parade pontoon area.

These bright energy saving lights upgrade the original lights which were installed in 2010, as a donation from We-Ef Lighting.

The old lights were organised by the former Wharf Committee, a former group of local volunteers who utilised donated services from local companies.

Over time, the harsh seaside environment eroded the lights and their poor condition was noticed by Alistair Robertson, the former

Although retired, Alistair organised with We-Ef to replace them.

We-Ef supplied the lights and arranged transport from Melbourne, all at no cost.

MidCoast Council arranged the removal of the old lighting and the installation of the upgraded lights, improving visibility and safety.

Alistair describes the new lights as, “World class new LED technology, with a service life well more than 10 years. They are fitted with a Telecell streetlight controller, which allows them to switch on at sunset on full power. At midnight they automatically switch to half power and turn off in the morning.”

Palm Lake Resort – Tea Gardens Paddle Pops (Kayakers) A GROUP of likeminded paddlers, formed the Palm Lake Resort Tea Gardens – Paddle Pops in May 2017.

The group has grown over the three years that they have been operating to 31 members – predominantly from Palm Lake Resort, but

also from other residents of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest who are made welcome.

They paddle every Tuesday, 52 weeks per year and meet at around 7.30 a.m. for a 8.00 a.m. departure from the Anzac Park, Marine Drive, opposite the Tea Gardens Fire

One of their newer members is Jack Nugent who is 84 years young and lives at Palm Lake Resort.

He has bought a new sit-on Hurricane kayak and under the tutorship of Warwick Hall is quickly learning the idiosyncrasies of paddling.

Most mornings 6 – 12 paddlers turn up and they form into groups of similar

expertise paddlers. Routes vary depending on the tide and range from 6 – 8 km with the odd longer one – Nelson Bay and Bulahdelah.

After the paddle we all meet at the Ice Cream Shack at Tea Gardens for a coffee and Paddle Post Mortem and

banter. Each week one of our paddlers writes up a story of the day, in the Paddle Pops Press with truth optional and embellishment the norm.

For anyone unlucky enough to take a dip, a ceremonial “Duck” is awarded, with some paddlers having 4-5 to their

credit.

For anyone in the area interested in joining some fun loving guys and gals on the water, come down to Anzac Park, Marine Drive, Tea Gardens before 8.00 am. on any Tuesday.

22 July: Progress was recorded today with 40 players taking part in the first Nominated Triples for nearly 4 months.

It was a long wait for us bowls “tragics” but it was well worth it.

The winners on the day were taken on an overall for both the grass and synthetic.

All winners were adjudged on a countback as numerous teams recorded 11 points.

The grass winners were Bill Bailey, Peter Cheney and John Slater The synthetic grass winners were Lance Atkins, Ron Green and Greg Pearson.

24 July: The overcast day did not deter players

from enjoying another day on the green.

Four lady bowlers joined with the men today to play 18 ends of Pairs.

The competition was tough although Linda Richards and “longbow” exponent Kevin Barbie gave their opponents a bit of a serve winning 23-8.

It was great to have the lady bowlers with us and the organisers are keen to see more players taking part on Fridays.

Play commences at 9.30 for a 10.00 am start.

TUESDAY 21st July: Round 1 Club Championship Major Singles plus social bowls. Unfortunately Karen McPhie, winner of this event 2019 was unable to defend her title due to injury. The Singles Competition was played on the grass green, the winner of a game is the first bowler to gain 25 shots. On Rink 8 Lorraine Murphy v Sheril Johnson 21 ends bowled. This was a close game until the 7th end then Lorraine took control winning 25 v 11.

On the next Rink Judi Polak v Maynie Roberts, this contest lasted 30

ends. Maynie holding a narrow lead until the 11th end, by the 19th end she was 9 shots ahead of Judi, 21 v 12 but Judi wasn't ready for this game to end by the 29th end the score 24 all. Judi winning on the last end and claiming the title of "the Comeback Queen". Robyn Beaumont v Irene Roberts ( a relatively new bowler), who bowled very competitively against a more experienced opponent.

Irene was in the lead by 1 shot on the 7th end but from then on it was all Robyn's way, final score Robyn 25 v Irene 9 on the 19th end.

Judy McGavock and Loretta Baker were "neck to neck" till the 20th end, Judy then scored a 4 which gave her a 6 shot lead. On the 27th end she added another 4 to her

incidents during the day which required medical attention on the course caused a major reorganisation with the deletion of some of the route, but this didn't detract from the rally, just made it shorter.

A full field of 60 entries was received. There were a few withdrawals close to the start, partly because competitors were prohibited from travelling from their home postcodes, but 52 cars started from the service park at the Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

Of the 52 starters, 30 were classed as official finishers.

The rather high dropout rate, could probably be attributed to the months that had elapsed since the last time that most competitors had driven their cars in anger.

You can spend all the time you like preparing a car, but you don't really know how things will work out until

you let out the clutch at the start of the first stage.

Thursday 23rd July: Round 2 of the Singles Championship. A hard fought battle between Robyn Beaumont and Lorraine Murphy. Lorraine leading until the 11th end, 12th end 10 all, 15th end 12 all then Lorraine forged ahead leading by 4 shots on the 23rd end, 20 v16. By the 27th end the score 21 all, victory finally to Robyn on the 30th end 25 v 21."New Comer" Sheila Rattray had a convincing win against Lynda Richards 26 ends bowled, result 25 v 13.

started strongly,bowling against Dale Winter leading by 7 points on the 8th end.

Dale narrowed this lead to 2 shots by the 13th end but Robyn remained focused winning on the 28th end 25 v 18. A mammoth game lasting 34 ends on Rink 11 Judy McGavock v Judi Polak Judy leading by 5 on the 8th end then Judi by 7 on the 18th end. By the 25th end 17 all, 31st end Judi leading by 3 shots 22 v 19. The next 3 ends belonged to Judy she gained 7 points winning the match 25 v 22. Thanks to the Markers Irene Roberts, Dot Dallas, Jean Glover and Loretta Baker and Pat Baker for Umpiring.

The semi final will be played on Tuesday 28th July (weather permitting)

Herbicide spraying MidCoast Council will be carrying out a range of herbicide spraying activities in various waterways, open drains, and retention ponds; on roadsides and reserves; and on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries and Council building surrounds within the entire MidCoast Local Government area during the months August, September and October 2020.

These activities will be targeting general vegetation, grasses, reeds, bindii, broadleaf, annual, perennial and environmental weeds and each program is subject to weather conditions. Only qualified operators will be undertaking works.

On the roadsides and reserves, subject to availability and need, registered herbicides Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360, Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate), and/or Metsun 600, Lynx WG, Kenmet, Kenzon and/or Grazon extra will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable.

In various waterways and retention ponds Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360 and/or Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate) will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable and as a precaution residents are advised to refrain from using, drinking or swimming in the water for two weeks following treatments.

RALLYING finally started again in 2020. Round 1 of the 2020 AMSAG Southern Cross Rally Series was held in the forests around Bulahdelah on July 18. The rally was run under extraordinary circumstances because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Bulahdelah has always provided excellent roads for rallies and this year was no exception. 200mm of rain was forecast in the area for the week before the event, but this just turned into some annoying rain on the day before. The weather was fine on the day, roads were in excellent condition and there was no dust.

The original plan was to run the event over seven stages (82km transport, 131km competitive) with two stages run once each, two stages run twice and one stage combining two as the first of two night stages.
