Santa runs a treat

SWAPPING his sleigh for a fire truck last week, Santa Claus was escorted by volunteer members of the Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade as he travelled the town to spread his Christmas cheer.

Blazing sirens alerted the young and old that the jolly man in red was on his way with huge sacks of lollies in tow.

The children flocked as Santa and his elves distributed the treats and wished them well.

Brigade Captain Mark Hartwell said the annual Santa Run is a fun family event that brings the town together.

The group had so far raised more than $120,000 for cancer.

Mr Hosri said they were simply hoping for a donation of a couple of products to help reduce their expenses.

Instead, Bulahdelah Bowling Club in conjunction with Donna

Shannon from Greens Bistro provided a full dinner for the visitors, their first sit-down meal on the journey so far, with an evening of barefoot bowls thrown in.

Bowling Club Secretary Allan Freihaut said the club didn’t hesitate to become involved, with Donna and her staff also quickly jumping in to assist.

“We’ve played host to a number of charity riders and organisations in the past and it’s all for a good cause,” Mr

Freihaut said.

“It shows people from outside what a friendly town we are, it’s all about the hospitality and everyone pitches in.”

Speaking with News Of The Area, cyclist Peter Hosri said the group had been “blown away” by the Bulahdelah community spirit.

“Since the Facebook post, there’s been nothing but support coming our way, I’m speechless to see what has been done for us,” he said.

“It’s also been amazing just walking around the place and having everyone come up and say hi and be very supportive.”

Steer North is a health promotion charity that raises funds for cancer research and patient care while promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

The 45-day journey over 4,000kms will conclude in Cairns on 16 January.

It’s Christmas holiday time along the Myall Coast and the tourists and visitors are flocking in.

The camping grounds are full and Real Estate agents in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest have had a great response from holidaymakers looking for rentals over the January period.

“We have 138 holiday rentals and it’s looking very positive for January,” James Murphy said.

It’s also been a much

better year for home and unit sales in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

“We’ve had our biggest November ever,” James said.

“The strong interest from Sydney and Newcastle is far outstripping supply,” James told News Of The Area.

First National Real Estate at Hawks Nest has more than 100 properties on its holiday books.

“We’re pretty full over the Christmas New Year Period but we still have some properties available

from the 14th to 28th January,” Holiday Manager Kaye Simpson said.

Lisa Hamilton from Ray White in Tea Gardens said, “We’ve had a better year, we’ve had more bookings consistently since the October long weekend.”

LJ Hooker in Tea Gardens is looking to grow its holiday rent roll under new Principal Lisa Dale.

“We are a small community and we want to show off the small-town spirit,” he said.

“The lollies given out mainly came through donations to the brigade, but we also used some of our own funds as well.”

Throughout the year, the 15 volunteer members have protected the community from countless bushfires, assisted with motor vehicle accidents, carried out reduction burns, attended training sessions and organised numerous fundraising activities.

“We have one member who got a job with the forestry because of the training he received here,” Mr Hartwell said.

For the fire season ahead, Mr Hartwell is hoping for a quiet time but said the brigade is on call 24/7 if needed.

In addition to supporting the community, the recent Santa Run highlighted the good camaraderie which exists amongst the volunteer members whose ages range from 18-85 years.

Mr Hartwell said new faces are always welcome to join.

Jayne’s Hair and Beauty has just marked its 25th birthday.

“We opened 7 December 1991 when the shopping centre was brand new,” Owner Jayne Ireland told

News Of The Area.

Jayne has been cutting and perming for more than 30 years.

“I went to TAFE and my mother actually followed me 18 months later doing hairdressing when she was 40,” Jayne said.

“She helped me, until I had my first child, then she made me choose between her being a grandmother or a hairdresser, you can’t have both Mum said, so I chose Grandma.”

AN Upper Myall man will appear in court after damaging vehicles at a house in Bulahdelah earlier this month.

Police report they were called to the house after the 39-year-old male caused damage to two parked vehicles before pushing over a large ceramic pot.

The offender was identified a short time later and was located as

he was driving away from the BP Service Station in Bulahdelah.

The driver failed to stop as directed by police and a short pursuit followed.

After further investigations, the man was charged with matters relating to the incident which occurred on 7 December.

He will appear before Foster Local Court in relation to the charges.

“When I started everyone came in every week to have their set, but that changed with the invention of the blow dryer and hair straightener.”

Men’s hairdressing has also changed with demand for ‘man-scaping’ and product.

“The young men now are much more conscious about their styles.”

Beauty work too has become the norm.

“I do waxing, pedicures, manicures, lash and brow tinting.”

“When I started doing beauty work 25 years ago it was very much a luxury, now it’s almost a necessity.”

In a reflective mood, Jayne said, “This salon has been the stable influence in my life and my children.”

“It’s been the one thing that’s stayed the same.”

As for the future, “When I started the salon I was only a young woman and I stood out the front and said this is it for the next 25 years, I’ll raise my kids and that’s what happened, but as I got to that 25 years I thought, what am I going to do now and I walked around for a while and then decided I’ll put in another 25 if I last that long.”

AS 2017 approaches, inspiration is at hand for Hunter residents looking to put down the booze and stock up on beverages that don’t fuel a hangover.

Cancer Council NSW nutrition program Eat It To Beat It works with parents to help families add more fruit and vegetables to the household diet for better health and cancer prevention.

The program has already helped inspire more than 1470 Hunter parents in 2016, through free sessions and workshops.

Hunter Nutrition Project Officer Clare Murphy said celebrating the New Year and making a resolution to pick up healthy habits was a great way to start 2017.

Drinks, which so often featured in celebrations,

offered a great starting point.

“Fruit and veg mocktails can add great liquid punch to a New Year’s party, while fruit and veg smoothies offer a great pick-meup next morning,” Miss Murphy said.

Birdlife Australia’s NSW Project Coordinator Mick Roderick said, “Little Terns are endangered mostly because they breed in areas where people like to frequent, such as beaches and sandy cays. When we find breeding colonies like this it is very important for us to step back and give the birds a chance to breed.

The birds generally nest in a scrape of sand rather than a traditional ‘nest’ and their eggs are extremely well camouflaged.

For this reason, it’s best to just give the area a wide berth, rather than walking close and trusting that you’ll see a nest before you disturb it.

Council will place signage on the beach and near the stockpile to alert visitors to their presence and request people (and their dogs) keep their distance from the birds.

By Daniel SAHYOUN NATIONAL Hearing Care (NHC) is now providing free hearing checks in Bulahdelah on the first Tuesday of each month.

Hearing loss affects one out of every six Australians and although commonly associated with aging, the risk of having some degree of deafness is becoming more common amongst younger people.

According to NHC, half of all people suffering from partial or total deafness are aged between 15 and 64-years-of-age.

Hayley Pakalniskis said hearing loss can happen gradually over time.

“It’s important to have your hearing checked regularly as early intervention and referral to an Audiologist can help with your hearing loss.”

Mrs Pakalniskis told News Of The Area hearing should be checked every two years or annually for people who work in a noisy

environment or who are over 50-years of age.

In addition to the free preliminary screening service, National Hearing Care also provides a range of follow-up services including referrals and hearing aid consultation and fitting.

Mrs Pakalniskis said they are hoping to expand the service to other areas in the Myall Coast region in the new year.

The service currently operates from Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre and appointments can made by contacting National Hearing Care on 90918560.

As part of their induction, relieving Principal Mrs Allardice invited the proud parents to pin the badges on the young leaders during the

Getting straight to work, the students have already taken up their leadership duties by assisting the outgoing captains with the final school assembly for the year.

Assistant Principal Mrs Saffioti said by shadowing the current leaders, the new captains had the opportunity to learn the ropes of their new positions.

“It’s the changing of the torch and a proud moment for students, parents and our community,” she said.

As part of their role, the

young leaders will assist with assemblies and other school events as well as representing the school in the wider community.

Mrs Allardice thanked the outgoing captains Cory Bolton and Ashley Walker and vice captains Eloise Gentle and Cohen Jarmain and commended them on a job well done during their 12 months of leadership.

By Daniel SAHYOUN THE Myall Coast community will have something to celebrate this New Year with work commencing to ensure Mungo Brush Road remains open and continues to provide access to Myall Lakes National Park.

The project includes relocating of a 3.2 km section of the road affected by sand movement from Dark Point Dunes.

The dune sheet is currently moving inland at a rate of three to six metres a year which will start to block the road within two years and bury it under eight metres of sand within 50

years without intervention.

A National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) spokesperson said subject to conditions, approval has been given to proceed with the project.

The proposed route is currently being surveyed and the road design stage is expected to be completed by June 2017.

Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce President Jessica Harris and Bulahdelah Chamber President John Sahyoun said maintaining access to the National Park will greatly benefit the community and businesses in the region.

Think Like a Fish

LOCAL recreational fisherman Brett Shultz has been fishing the region’s beaches and waterways for well over 50 years.

With so many top spots to cast a line, Brett said the secret to reeling in a big haul is patience, fresh bait and local knowledge.

“Tea Gardens has a wonderful estuary for just about every single species you want to name,” he said.

“The beaches stretching from Hawks Nest to Seal Rocks are great coastal spots especially for whiting, bream and tailor.”

The Big Gibber is well worth visiting for a decent haul, The Boulders is another top spot for bream and Corrie Island and Mungo have also fished well this year.

Further north, mullet is plentiful in the Myall River around Bulahdelah, but good catches of blackfish, bream and bass are also common.

Once you get to the salt water towards Tea Gardens, there is a wider variety of species including jewfish, flathead, and drummer.

Brett said although there are many “wonderful fishing places” the key is to success is to think like a fish.

“You can’t just roll up anywhere and expect to catch a fish, you need to think if you were a fish, where would you be,” he said.

“If there is a gutter, they like sitting on the edges and you also need to look for formation or structures like rock walls or dropoffs off sand spits, that’s where the

When it comes to bait, Brett said you can’t go past local beach worms and pippies while pilchards and garfish are good for targeting tailor.

With a “million places to fish,” a bit of local advice can always be helpful for visitors to the area.

“Talk to a local and they’ll put you right,” Brett said.

“The local fishermen are good blokes, pretty friendly and eager to help a fellow fisherman.”

To protect the waterways, Brett urges everyone to be conscious of the environment by throwing back the little fish and taking your rubbish with you.

“The only thing that you should leave are your footprints and tyre tracks,” he said.

Scholarship awarded

MCKELTY Searle’s plans to study at University next year have been boosted after being awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the Great Lakes Education Fund (GLEF).

GLEF Chairperson Stephen Nicholas said 11 students in the Great Lakes region were awarded scholarships this year, sharing a total of $22,000 in funding.

“The funds come directly from the local community through a Community Partnership Program and also through fundraising events that we organise throughout the year,” he said.

“The scholarships help rural students transition and supports them in their future education endeavours.”

To be eligible, students must demonstrate financial need, go to school or live within the region covered by GLEF and also show commitment to achieving their goals.

“I just got sick of looking in the mirror and seeing this fat person that wasn’t happy,” she said.

“I was depressed and taking medication which was making me fatter, I was lethargic all the time and everything was a chore, it was just a vicious cycle.”

Two-years ago, the 52-year old from Karuah started on her life changing journey.

“It was my New Year’s resolution, I decided to do something about my weight, and I did,” she said.

“It didn’t happen overnight, it was a long and hard road but I just kept at it and at it and at it.”

Robyn lost 23-kilograms in the first 12-months which she has maintained by exercising daily and eating sensibly.

Mr Nicholas said through a reciprocal scholarship arrangement,

Mckelty’s award will be matched dollar for dollar by the university, doubling the amount available to support her through her studies.

The scholarship program was established in 2012 and has supported around 50 students during this time.

Robyn’s advice to anyone wanting to change their lifestyle is to simply “put your mind to it and go for it.”

“You just can’t do it for a week or a month, it’s something that you have to continually keep at.”

Comparing her life changing journey to ‘Xena, The Warrior Princess’ who battled against evil, Robyn’s personalised ‘Xena’ number plates are a constant reminder of how far she has come.

For the many people who will pledge to lose weight as part of their New Year’s Resolution, simply follow Robyn’s lead.

“Start to exercise, eat properly and stick with it,” she said.

rehydrated us at the clubhouse,” Rebecca said.

Mike Tamblyn also thanked HNTG Surf Lifesaving President Steve Howell and his team for the terrific job they did in running and organising the event.

As for the results, the HNTG Masters Men came in third in round three held on the Saturday.

The Reserve Men’s Hawks Nest Tea Gardens crew came in sixth in the fourth round on Sunday.

Rebecca Mitchell summed up the weekend: “All the boaties and supporters, you are all to be congratulated on not only your rowing and sweeping but also the great sportsmanship shown all weekend.’’

Spectacular Boat Challenge

MEMBERS of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Surf Life Saving Club take a bow, after the spectacular Boat Series Challenge on Bennetts Beach earlier this month.

86 crews took to the surf in what could only be described as challenging conditions on the first day of the Street Series competition.

“It wasn’t huge seas but enough to make us rearrange the program,” official Mike Tamblyn said.

There were a couple of injuries with Hawks Nest crew member Peter Rogers taken to hospital with a nasty gash to the leg.
