Pigs will fly - successful fundraiser for Surf Club

By Sandra MURRAY SATURDAY pig racing was a great success at the Tea Gardens Country Club on 22 February.

A family fun day saw a great turnout with lots of locals showing up to bet on one of eight pigs racing safely through a fun obstacle course.

The cute little pigs were all flying, with six races on the cards all to raise funds for the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (TGHN SLSC).

Punters had the option of buying a pig at the prerace auctions, or winning one from a raffle round,

As more and more people are choosing to live in strata units and townhouses rather than on the traditional quarter acre block, how people interact and the nature of ‘neighbourhood disputes’ is also changing. Two recent decisions of the NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) have considered the issues of smoking and pets within strata schemes.

In the case of Gisks, the Tribunal considered a dispute which arose from smoking within a strata scheme. It was noted that whilst smoking is legal and there is no legislation preventing a home owner from smoking within their own home, under the Strata Schemes Management Act an owner must not cause a nuisance or hazard to another owner. The Tribunal found that smoke drift was a nuisance and hazard and Orders were therefore made

preventing the offending owner from smoking on her balcony and requiring her to close her windows when smoking inside.

In the case of Roden, the Tribunal considered the validity of a by-law which imposed a blanket ban on pet ownership. Under the Strata Schemes Management Act, a by-law can be challenged on the basis that it is harsh, unconscionable or oppressive. The Tribunal found that the by-law was oppressive as it did not reflect a balanced consideration of all owners’ interests and there was no mechanism for an owner under any circumstances to keep any animal as a pet. It also followed an earlier decision which held that such a bylaw against pet ownership is contrary to an owner’s basic habitation rights and the use and enjoyment of their lot.

Koala Recovery Strategy

By Sandra CLARK MYALL Koala and Environment Group Inc. held their quarterly meeting 18 February with the next meeting, being the Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday 19 May 2020 at 7.30pm in the Silver Dolphin Room at the Tea Gardens Hotel.

Ian and Gail Morphett delivered the Quarterly Koala report informing the meeting that in the wake of the catastrophic midnorth coast bushfires in late 2019, Mathew Bell, Senior Ecologist at MidCoast Council is organising a collaboration project involving all affected parties to develop a recovery strategy for the devastated Koala populations.

Ian said, “Mat Bell has invited a who’s who of people and organisations involved in Koala care.”

Included are Tim Faulkner from Australian Reptile Park and Aussie Ark, Cheyne Flanagan, Clinical Director of Port Macquarie Koala Hospital (who is speaking at the UN later this month on the plight of our koalas), Dr Steve Phillips (BIOLINK and coauthor of the NSW Koala Recovery Plan), Dr Rebecca Montague-Drake (Hastings-Macleay Koala Recovery Partnership), Koalas-in Care Taree, Port Stephens Koalas, Myall Koala and Environment Group, Port Stephens Council, MidCoast Council, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, Kempsey Council and NPWS. Port Macquarie Hospital in particular has some very innovative plans to build a breeding

programme for unreleasable Koalas (due to injury) to then release their offspring back into the wild.

"As a result of their very successful Go Fund Me campaign, the hospital has significant funds to establish the breeding sites and do the clinical studies necessary to ensure proper genetic matching of the animals in the breeding programme," Ian said.

The first meeting is to be held on Wednesday 25 March at the Taree Council offices.

LOCAL swimmer, Lily Fidden, has won the 9 year old 50 metre Girls Freestyle Race at the Port Stephens Zone Swim meet held on 19 February.

With a very competitive time of 51.53 seconds, Lily is in strong form for her next race in the Hunter Regional Primary Championship being held on 3 March at Lambton Pool.

Lily was also the Junior Age Champion at the Tea Gardens Public School swimming carnival held back on 5 February The Tea Gardens Principal, Mr Mark Clemson, informed NOTA that, “We are very proud of her achievements and wish her the best.”

By Ann SCULLY TEA Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club members are excited to be staging the eighteenth Motorfest on Saturday, 14 March 2020 commencing at 10.00am at Myall Sports Park, Hawks Nest.

Club President, Juergen Seil, told News of the Area, “Weather permitting, it should be a full house again and we are expecting about four hundred interesting, Veteran, Vintage, Classic and Unique cars and bikes to attend from fortyfive Motoring Clubs across New South Wales.

“They all belong to the NSW Council of Motor Clubs, CMC as we call them and they are doing a great job in supporting the many NSW registered Motor Clubs whilst working in harmony with Road Maritime Services in promoting and supporting motoring enthusiasts.”

Recently RMS, together with CMC, introduced an updated Historic Vehicle Registration system

called the H-Plate Log Book System.

Basically, each Motor Club has a Registrar who controls the system and at substantially reduced registration fees, any suitable Veteran or Vintage vehicle over thirty years of age and near original factory specification will qualify for the H-Plate System.

Once again at this year’s Motorfest, the local Rural Fire Service will provide barbeque meals with the Red Cross offering their traditionally home baked cakes and other goodies.

Local Councillor, Mr Len Roberts, from MidCoast Council will open the event at 10.00am and other dignitaries in attendance will be Mayor, Mr David West and member of NSW Parliament, Kate Washington.

Juergen Seil wishes an enjoyable day for everyone in attendance and in particular having fun whilst inspecting and admiring the many well restored vehicles on display.

The program also provides development support for cultural, recreational and emergency/disaster relief projects.

SKILLS back in 2020

SKILLS will be held for the first time in 2020 on Friday 28 February at the Baptist Church in Tea Gardens.

Last year ended with a Christmas themed SKILLS and was attended by residents of both Peter Sinclair Gardens and Estia Health as well as community residents.

The ladies made succulent Christmas trees under the guidance of Frances Michael and were gratefully assisted by many ladies from U3A Garden Club.

Christmas cards were also made under the guidance of

MIDCOAST Council Club Grants Southern Sub Region Committee is pleased to announce their funding for local community organisations opened on 24th February, 2020.

President Bea Treharne. If you asked them why they enjoy playing bridge, they would tell probably you that they enjoy the competition, exercising their brains, and the social aspects of the game.

We believe that membership in the Club is increasing for these reasons and because you don’t need to be in tip top physical condition to play, no uniforms are required, and it is an inexpensive pastime. Beginners lessons start on Tuesday 25th February at 6pm. A number of newcomers to bridge, and some relatively new members who wish to refresh their bridge skills, will be meeting every Tuesday evening for two hours of learning. They will be mentored by more experienced players and will learn how to bid, using the Standard American System,

Bridge News ON Monday 10th February, Linda & Glenn Conroy were first in the N/S position and Handicap Winners. Similarly on Friday 14thFebruary, Jim and Trish Thatcher were in first position N/S and Handicap Winners and the following week Peter Baily and Gordon Morrison achieved the same result.

This is relatively difficult to achieve, as the couple coming first often have very good average scores and, to win the Handicap as well, they have to beat their own average scores by a significant amount.

The scheme prioritises Grants which target groups including, among others,

District Triples Tea Gardens Women’s Bowls

TUESDAY 18th February: Social bowls played 2 games of Fours, 18 ends. Numbers down due to 5 teams competing in the Newcastle District Women’s Bowling Association (NDWBA) Triples Championship. Jean Glover, Dorothy Thompson, Jill McBride and Bette Saillard on the 4th end were already in a commanding position against Francis Betar, Pam Gilchrist, Bev Rhodes and Dale Winter 10 v 0. Unfortunately for Dale's team things never improved, the result a momentous win for Bette's ladies 25 v 6. Ingrid Luck, Christine Fossey, Irene Roberts and Judy McGavock also took command early in their match against Leona Clissold, Jan Coomer, Maureen Campbell and Karen Green, winning by 12 shots, 25 v 13. The winners on the day was to be the team with the highest score, both winning teams had the same score.

Hence it reverted to the team with the highest winning margin, congratulations to Bette's team. The winner of the voucher to the Myall Bistro & Café was Jan Coomer, as always many thanks to the

Myall Bistro & Café for their donation of the raffle prize.

District Triples: TGWBC entered 5 teams in this event, they travelled to Merewether, Kotara and New Lambton to compete. Three teams lost in Round 1, Sheila Rattray, Jeanette Emmett and Dot Dallas got through to Round 2 but lost to a team from Lambton Park. Robyn Beaumont, Lynne Green and Kayelene Pearson proved to be the stars of our club, they had a good win against a Kotara team, then a Soldiers Point side. This placed them in the semi finals, the opposition from Soldiers Point Alison Moxey, Julie Scumacher and Rosita Ryan. Our ladies bowled magnificently but on the day the victory went to Soldiers Point winning 23 v

19 February: Nominated Triples this week attracted 52 players with most games being Triples but a shortage of rinks required that there be 4 teams playing Fours.

There were another 6 players playing their third round in the Minor Singles.

Bill Whalan, Geoff Page and Greg Smith made short work of their opponents in winning their morning game on the grass, whilst on the synthetic, Peter Gurney, Ross Barry and Paul Goodwin fought out a three-way countback to record a close win.

The Luck losers today were; Kerry Ballinger, John Yabsley and Alan Greenhalgh.

In the Minor Singles competition, mentioned earlier, Graham Reynolds continued his winning way defeating Rob Young 31-17.

The wide-drawing, Bob Peady accounted for Gary Wynne 31-19 and Doug Naylor is looming large with a 31-22 win over

Henry Dallas.

20 February: To complete the quarter-final round of the Minor Singles, Merv Mills played Doug Andrews today with Merv progressing to the semifinal.

In an early semi-final game Graham Reynolds booked a place in the final defeating Bob Peady 31-24.

23 February: In the remaining semi-final, Doug Naylor played Merv Mills today to determine the last finals position.

It was a remarkable game in that Doug charged away from the 9th end and Merv was left stranded on 6 shots for the next 9 ends.

Doug had established a 9-shot lead by this time.

At the 18th the change happened.

Merv cut loose with a 4 on the 18th and then left Doug with no answers for the next 7 ends.

Once Merv hit the lead at the 21st he was never headed winning the game on the 31st end 31-17.

Congratulations to both players for a great game!

Merv Mills will now play Graham Reynolds for the Championship next Sunday 1 March in what should be a

cracker of a game.

In other news: The Club will play four teams in the Newcastle District Pennant season commencing Saturday 29 February.

In what promises to be a very competitive season, Tea Gardens will play a team in Grade 4 another in Grade 6 and two teams in Grade 7.

All teams are sponsored by the Club’s major sponsor, First National Real Estate, Hawks Nest.

The selectors have posted the teams and players should advise their managers as to their availability to play.

In the opening round, Grade 4 will play Hamilton North at home and Grade 6 will play Bar Beach, also at home.

Grade 7 (1) will play away at Fingal Bay and Grade 7 (2) will play Bayway Village.

I feel that this boyfriend – I’m going to call him Jasper – I feel Jasper can smell your kindness in the same way that he can smell your veal parmigiana with scalloped potatoes, julienned carrots, crisp beans and a baked cheesecake topped with drizzled lemon curd and berries for dessert. Uni students don’t have a lot of spare cash, and I reckon Jasper has factored you in to his weekly budget that goes something like this: Three nights a week as a Pizza Deliverer plus my student loan plus the money I got for Christmas plus two nights a week at Mrs KC’s house for dinner minus share accommodation costs, petrol, uni books, parking fees, drinking money and six packets of two-minute noodles equals an accruing debt that I may be able to pay off by the time I’m 28. Without Mrs KC, I’ll be at least 30.

Of course, I don’t doubt that you also have a very engaging personality, Mrs KC, and look, if you enjoy Jasper’s company and it isn’t inconvenient to cook for one more (particularly now your daughter has flown the coop), then I don’t see a problem with it. I would, however, tell her about this arrangement before she drops in for a surprise visit and sees his clapped out 1999 Mitsubishi Magna in the driveway.

PS: If Jasper starts to bring his washing as well, all deals are off.

YES, ‘honest materials’ is a description gaining prominence. We see a lot of homogenization and engineering in today’s properties. By homogenization I mean homes that all look the same – cookie cutter – if you like. And with engineered, I don’t mean structural compliance, I mean pre-fab floorboards, vinyl, carpet, laminate. So, when you see the term ‘honest materials’ you’re being directed to materials that are truly natural such as timber dado feature paneling; timber-lined walls and ceilings or large beams.. Instead of covering them over, the owners have elected to retain them, expose them and celebrate them. This also goes for brick, concrete or even rammed earth internal walls or fireplaces. If they’re painted or plastered, owners have removed the covering, exposing their natural state, sealing where necessary and enjoyed the natural state of the building materials. Honest materials are also found in the floorboards and other timber and iron products found in restorers yards.

Whatever the product, it is inclined to have more character than the ‘shiny and new’ look we often see today. If you see it, you know you’re looking at history, warmth and character.

Tea Gardens Rugby League Status for Season

THE Myall River Juniors Rugby League Club will hold a “meet and greet” afternoon at Myall Park on Thursday 5 March from 5pm.

The Club is hopeful of forming mini [6 to 8 year age groups] and mod [9 to 12 year age groups] teams in 2020.

Neil Reynolds from the Club told News Of The Area, “There has been some interest shown, however not enough to confirm age groups at this stage.”

The 2020 competition starts on the weekend of 2 May, and will be played over a 16 week period.

“The Club can confirm a

17 year age group, and there is still scope to form teams in the 13 to 16 year age groups,” Mr Reynolds said.

“Formation of any team will require support staff. The Club will pay for any accreditations required to fulfill a role Training will be at Myall Park from 5:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

The Lady Hawks will continue on the back of a big 2019 season. While a number of players have, and will leave the Club, there are many indicating their wish to play.

Leah Barry will Coach the side, supported by Maria Duroux. Training will be from 6pm Tuesday and Thursday.

The first game will be 28 March at home.

“The Tea Gardens Hawks are struggling to form a side in 2020,” Mr Reynold said.

“A number of key players have moved on, which will test the Clubs resolve,” he said.

“Coach Trent Murphy is confident additional players will turn out.”

“He is supported by Greg Tassell as an assistant.

Tassell’s resume will add to player strengths,” Mr Reyolds told News Of The Area.

The Hawks first game will be a trial against Wauchope “Regies” at Myall Park on Saturday 28 March.

Popular tournament saw a capacity field of 292 visitors

It was again noteworthy that four golfers, Maria and Gordon Mather from the Shelly Beach Golf Club, with Barbara and George Young Lee from Ryde Parramatta Golf Club have played all 20 vet’s weeks of golf conducted at Hawks Nest. Another 17 have played 15 or more of those tournaments.

Three teams posted a score of 96 in Monday’s Irish 4 Ball event, with the team of Carol Corr (Kiama), Jane Mackie (Richmond), Julie-Ann Taylor ( Nelson Bay) and Di Smith (Hawks Nest) prevailing as winners on a countback.

With the best combination of skill and luck, Sylvia Wilson (Everglades) and Stan Tworek (Belmont) received the joint RSL LifeCare,The Grange Scratch Golf trophy.

Whilst the major NSWVGA Men’s and Ladies Shield nett winners were Michael Howard (Sth West Rocks) with 84 stableford points and Rhonda Pitt (Pacific Dunes) with 87 points.

There were 4 clubs with 15 or more participants and the Belmont club was represented by 47 golfers, whilst Shelly Beach golfers were successful in winning the inter-club braggers challenge cup.

The purple mug Encouragement Award Recipients were David Simmons (Singleton GC) and Kay Baker (Townsville GC).

Special mention must again be made of the sterling effort by Ben Mills and the course crews fantastic presentation of the course for play; whilst Sonya Acret and a team of volunteers did a marvellous job in dressing the dinner tables and serving an exceptional meal in a timely manner. Also, this tournament is forever grateful to the army of volunteers and administrative staff who contribute substantially to the success of the tournament. Our pro shop personnel are efficient and very obliging at all times.

With more than 350 requesting entry forms for 2021, together with extensive

capacity field of 292 visitors front the starter on the first day’s Irish 4 Ball event. This is the biggest single course vet’s week of golf conducted in Australia, with competitors from 61 clubs from as far afield as Townsville in the north, Forbes in the West and Centenary Park

House ‘war cries’ were a dynamic part of the carnival as House Captains led their teams in loud chants and creative dances. This year six students have qualified for Primary Zone Swimming.

THE wet weather continued as the 2020 Primary Swimming Carnival for Bulahdelah School began on Thursday, 13 February.

Many excited students travelled on the bus from school soon after 9am to compete in the many agedbased swimming races.

With the 50 metre freestyle races completed, students enjoyed the first of a free-swim time in the pool.

Medley races were held before lunch and then House team relays.
