The local Lions Clubs has suspended

all group activities pending further notice.

Local sports have also been suspended, including Surf Life Saving Club activities and the Tea Gardens Bowls competitions.

Registrations for local soccer remain open with all games on hold until review at the end of April.

Resident social media groups are sharing information from trusted Australian Government sources, as well as offering direct help and care to people who have been isolated or unable to access essential goods and services.

By Sandra MURRAY LIONS Tea Gardens club members were out in force at their Bunnings BBQ, Heatherbrae, last Sunday 15 March.

The BBQ raised just over $800 for local projects.

This was one of the last BBQs that was allowed at the Bunnings sites as the regular event has since been stopped.

Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Free Clinic Medical Bus Services Suspended SERVICES have been suspended for the free Clinic Bus operating between Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest and local surrounds, to hospitals and medical clinics in the Greater Newcastle area.

This is due to the serious risks posed

by COVID-19 to the volunteer operators and patients alike.

Upcoming projects for the Lions Club include books for the local Tea Gardens school, donations to the Children’s Charity 4WD Challenge, and Life Education for Schools 2020.

Life Education for Schools provides a specialist education service for preschool and primary age students.

The service delivers up to 16 unique modules about subjects such as drugs and alcohol,

cybersafety, nutrition, lifestyle and respectful relationships.

The non-profit service has 44 mobile classrooms visiting schools across NSW to educate over 710,100 students, including pupils from Tea Gardens Primary School.

OUR mobile recycling trailer is heading around the region again, allowing residents to dispose of problem waste items including gas bottles, paint, motor oils, car batteries, household batteries, fluoro globes and tubes, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers – all items that can’t be placed in any domestic bins (red, yellow or green).

Check your garage, sheds, laundries and under sinks to collect up to 20kg or 20 litres worth of items to drop off at the trailer.

The trailer is heading to Wherrol Flat Tennis Courts on Thursday 26 March from 9.30am to 11am.

If you don’t live near one of the planned trailer locations or can’t make it there on the day, these problem waste items can be dropped off free of charge, any time, to any of our six Waste Management Centres across the region.

Bulky Waste Collections begin

MIDCOAST Council’s annual Bulky Waste cleanup begins on 23 March and continues through to August across the region. Waste must be separated into two piles - one for scrap metal and whitegoods, and a separate pile for general and electronic waste - and placed out two days prior to your zone’s scheduled pick-up - any earlier and it will be considered illegal dumping and could result in a fine.

Myall Wine Appreciation Group

ON the 19th of February the Myall Wine Appreciation Group convened for the 34th Annual AGM to reflect on the past year and plan activities for 2020.

The Group was formed some 34 years ago by a group of local people from Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and surrounds who shared an interest in combining the very interesting but involved area of Wine Appreciation, through research of wine production, wine styles, food matching techniques and social gatherings.

With the passing of time only a few foundation members remain but nonetheless the group has embraced new members who share the desires of the founding members.

The group usually meets on the 3rd Wednesday night of each month at a venue selected by a host from the group for that month to enjoy wine, good food and great wine tasting experiences and conversation.

Venues over the past few years have included local cafes and restaurants, clubs, hotel and some of our great Hunter Valley wineries through member organised day trips.

A typical dinner meeting is started by a glass or two of sparkling wine followed by a selection of wines during the meal service. During the meal service the wines

Toilet paper hoarding Dear News Of The Area, WELL here we are a few weeks down the track into the coronavirus threat and still the madness continues.

The panic buyers have stripped our supermarket shelves of anything not tied down without any care or the wider community in which they live.

They have a fetish for toilet paper!

It is about time that they receive some distinction for their efforts, and I propose that we introduce a special award for them to be known as the “Dunnies”.

The “Dunnies will be adjudicated by the staff of our supermarkets, who after all know who these people are.

They have their pictures recorded on in-house CTV so it should not be all that difficult for us to give them the notoriety they richly deserve.

We could award a weekly wooden “Dunny” based on trolley size, a monthly silver “Dunny”, based on the

number of trolleys purchased and every 3 months, until the madness ceases, we can award a gold “Dunny” for outstanding selfishness towards the community.

Gold “Dunny” recipients should quietly be invited to leave the community to go and live in a likeminded area where they can openly compete amongst themselves.

Here is no place for you.

Practical measures for Agents

FIRST National Real Estate Hawks Nest has announced practical temporary measures in response to Australian Government Department of Health recommendations related to Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The agency says it has taken sensible steps to avoid direct contact, such as shaking hands, is observing social distancing, deferring non-essential rental property inspections, and working with clients responsively on specific arrangements where necessary.

First National Real Estate Hawks Nest principal, Mick Rumble, says the temporary changes are intended to underpin the essential functions of the property market as well as to reassure customers that all necessary precautions are being observed.

‘While the presence of Coronavirus certainly requires us to observe some sensible precautions, the business of real estate continues and it’s essential that we support clients who are selling their homes as well as the needs of our tenants and landlords’ says Mick Rumble.

‘So, for the time being, we’re continuing all the normal functions that support tenants moving into and out of properties, but deferring non-essential routine inspections. Open homes continue, but with appropriate contact precautions, and we’ll be offering more private inspection appointments.’

Around 10 local members, resplendent in red, volunteered their time and smiles to support sales of sweet and savory baked goods.

Red Cross volunteer, Helen James, told NOTA, “We love supporting the Motorfest with the vintage cars and crowds.”

“March is also ‘Red Cross Calling’ month, our national fundraising campaign.

This year rather than door knocking, we are urging locals to support our fundraising by purchasing baked goodies or going online at redcross.org.au.”

In the wake of the drought, Black Summer bushfires and floods, there have been some community concerns about how and when donations are distributed to families and people in need.

The Tea Gardens Red Cross Branch is a long standing and strong group of volunteers who meet regularly and support many community events and service projects.

They have contributed towards raising over $127m since July 2019.

These funds immediately went to onthe-ground relief centres and evacuation points ($5m) and directly to people who lost their homes and /or family members ($61.5m).

Another $60m is being allocated to support mid-to-long term recovery across many locations.

Some recovery projects will take a few years to complete.

Donations will continue to roll out to support Australians with appropriate administration support to ensure access, equity and prevent any fraud.

SADLY, the Bridge Club has closed its doors on Sunday 15th March, due to concerns about the Coronavirus. There were several reasons for this decision.

We have a relatively high number of members who would be considered at risk if they were to fall ill, and we recognised that it is impossible to practice ‘social distancing’ when playing bridge face-to-face. The club is looking at online alternatives and intends

to continue to maintain contact with its members through its newsletter. How life can change in one week!

Before the closure on Friday 6th March, the ‘Under 100 Masterpoints’ competition began. This was an opportunity for less experienced players to play against one another, while the more experienced players played in their own separate session. With each session of bridge that you and your partner win, you receive a proportion of a Masterpoint. It takes a long time to accrue Masterpoints, although we have one member of our club who is a Grand Master with over 1,000 Masterpoints, and many players called State Masters with over 100 Masterpoints.

The ‘Shelia from Bulahdelah’ finds Joy in Kenya Slums

By Sandra MURRAY NORTH Arm Cove hosted a very successful International Women’s Day High Tea this year.

One of the two keynote presentations was by Joanne Trotter, retired principal of St Joseph’s Primary School.

Joanne delivered a powerful and often sad insight into the daily challenges faced by girls and women living in the Kibera slums in Kenya.

Here is a shortened version of her presentation.

“I first visited Kenya in 2018 as part of the Australian Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders program.

The project I decided to support was the “Undies Down Under” which collects and distributes underwear for young women in Africa.

So I left North Arm Cove bound for Kenya with a suitcase weighed down by 28kg of knickers all donated by locals.

Why knickers?

In Kenya, the government does not look after everyone.

The Kibera slum of 1.5 million people is not even recognised as a suburb.

As such, necessities for people can be scarce.

This includes food, medicine and clothing, including undies.

I was told that if my suitcase was searched the Nairobi Customs Officers would seize the undies and fine me.

I was scared but cleared Customs unscathed and shared those undies.

The first night I met Joy, a happy, positive, young woman who gives her time to make

a positive difference for young people and children living in, and often overwhelmed by, the slums.

She told me about maternity wards where three women share just one bed.

They take turns standing while the other gives birth.

Their newborn babies are at risk of human trafficking.

I also visited women in crisis centres, in slum schools and in shanty homes.

I was overwhelmed and kept fighting back tears.

Joy took me to visit women in the Kibera Youth Group.

It was a wonderful experience and they all formed a circle to sing and dance.

They asked me to dance as well.

So, I did my version of the hokey pokey.

On completion, I slunk away but then a little hand wrapped around my leg and I saw a tiny shaven head and a little girl called Joy smiled up at me.

It was a life changing experience and I could not forget both big and little Joy. Last July, my husband and I went back to visit little Joy’s school called Fairview.

It has 350 children crammed into three small rooms built of corrugated iron.

Thanks to modern technology we keep in touch and sustain support.

This is not a tale of sadness, rather an insight into how communities can look out for each other and care.

The lives of both Joys and the other women in Kenya’s slums are incredibly hard, but they have purpose.

They look out for each other.

When I left, the women gave me my new Kenyan name, the Sheila from Bulahdelah.”

U3A Grand Production of Love Always and All Ways was a fun filled extravaganza THE recent U3A Grand Production of Love Always and All Ways was a fun filled extravaganza on the theme of love. Many U3A groups and groups connected to U3A added their magic performances to the show.

The whole theme of the show was Love in all its aspects.

Diane Williams brought all the groups together and directed the performance.

Diane's words are so apt at this time in our community when we need to step back, make sure that our community is safe and secure and to make sure that we are particularly caring for the elderly who cannot get out and about easily to visit or to do their shopping.

Diane said that when trying to think of a name for the show, she researched films/show sayings with LOVE in their title: 'Love Actually,' 'Eat, Pray, Love,' 'Shakespeare in Love,” and many others.

Diane said, “With freedom, books flowers, music and the moon, who could not be happy?”

“Keep Love in your heart.

A life without love is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.”

“No Love without forgiveness, no forgiveness without Love.” “A lover will give you a kiss, a friend a hug, but a dog will give you her heart.”

“The five Ss of sports training are stamina, speed, strength, skill and spirit, but the greatest is spirit.”

During WW Two, Wintston Churchill was asked to cut funding for the Arts. He replied, “THEN WHAT ARE WE FIGHTING FOR?” “LOVE ALWAYS AND ALL WAYS” was a variety show with a powerful message.

We are living in quite uncertain times at the moment, so the theme of Love one Another is a powerful message which can be embraced by all our community, as we look out

for each other and make sure that neighbours and friends are OK. Thanks to everyone who shared in the joy of the evening.

I’M NOT sure who you are, but I think I love you. Here I was thinking the new world order was somewhere between Lord of the Flies and Contagion and yet amongst us are people like you, Mrs PH – in downtown Medowie of all places – making civilised decisions about cups of tea. I can see you there with your fine bone China tea set (cup and saucer, milk jug and sugar bowl) a little tasting plate of Scotch Finger and Monte Carlo biscuits, a polished silver teaspoon, and your Miranda Kerr Friendship teapot adorned with pretty pink peonies. Outside your window are people walloping each other over the head with hand sanitiser and a gentleman using your sprinkler as a bidet and yet there you are, an oasis of calm, your 12-blend Twinings Tea Chest taking pride of place on the kitchen bench and the teddy bear you’ve knitted entirely from reused teabag strings perched next to you.

There’s something very reassuring about that image in these uncertain times.

Now, back to the question. Let’s turn to science. Dr Stapley (of Loughborough University, no less, and inspired by George Orwell which seems appropriate in our current times) determined that putting the milk in last caused uneven heating leading to the proteins denaturing. I have no idea what this means, but it doesn’t sound good. On the other hand, if you use teabags, putting the milk in first will result in a soggy teabag and lessen its efficacy when boiling water is added. In this instance, the milk will need to go in last after the obligatory bag jiggling phase. For purists (and to reduce single-use plastic that is found in many teabags) I would recommend the following: Boil the kettle (preferably one of those stovetop ones that whistle when ready) and fill your Miranda Kerr teapot with hot water to warm it. Arrange your tea set and biscuits.

Empty the pot and add one scoop of tea for each cup and one for the pot (why? I’ve no idea, but it sounds authentic). Add the hot water and allow it to steep. Now pour the tea into your delicate teacup and add milk and sugar to taste (this will allow you to regulate the colour and strength).

Finally, sip quietly, don’t be tempted to dunk your Scotch Finger, and chant a little ‘oasis of calm’ affirmation to block out the loonies beyond your rose garden (and also the ones inside now that you are home schooling during a pandemic).
