Gillespie Victory in Lyne

By Margie TIERNEY THE Coalition, with Scott Morrison at the helm, has been returned to power, in what many, including the Prime Minister called a ‘miracle’ result.

For the voters of Lyne, it’s status quo, with the National’s Dr David Gillespie winning a third term.

With postal and pre polling votes still to be counted, Dr Gillespie looks to have gained an increased majority.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family. They are relieved the campaigning is over but very happy that I’ve been re-elected,” Dr Gillespie told News Of The Area.

Tea Gardens Slipway shut down indefinitely FROM Page 1

Department of Primary Industries last week, putting a stop to all repair and maintenance work being carried out at the slipway.

The only work that can be carried out are inspections of vessels as long as there are no materials or substances which could enter the river as a result of the work.

Paul Bendy, President of the Tea Gardens Slipway Association said, “The news came as quite a surprise, not that we did not expect some restrictions, but what we got hit with was only one step away from being shut

“The other aspect that surprised us was the speed at which Crown Lands moved on imposing the restrictions.”

The Slipway Association has been working for a number of years to bring the historic site in line with environmental regulations and controls.

“I intend continuing to work on getting all the approvals in place as this setback does not change what we have to do,” Paul Bendy said.

“It just makes it more difficult to fund a project when you cannot make money due to being effectively shut down.

In recent years the slipway has been operating at 60 percent capacity.

Mr Grainger added, “Any emergency work will require towing the affected vessel through two sanctuary zones and could cause environmental damage due to fuel spillage.”

itself, Dr Gillespie visited many of the major polling booths across the electorate and was surprised to find that actual voters having their say on the day was down over 40,000 across Lyne.

The reason, postal votes and more than three weeks of pre-polling which saw more than 4 million Australians record their vote

ahead of May 18.

“I think there’s universal agreement across all Parties that pre polling should be restricted to a week,” David Gillespie said.

Before the Election, Dr Gillespie promised $300,000 for both the Hawks Nest Community Hall and Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club.

Nearly $500,00 was also added to the $1m plus funding allocated to the Karuah Sporting field upgrade.

“The Karuah Roos and the local Cricket Club will be very happy,” he said.

On day one of his new term as MP for Lyne, Dr Gillespie also promised to support

Council in acquiring funding for dredging and Corrie Island.

“I’d like to thank all my supporters across the Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Myall Rivers region for their support throughout the campaign and I'm looking forward to our future together.”

On the night of the Election a disappointed Labor Leader, Bill Shorten announced his decision to resign the leadership, which now leaves the Federal Opposition without a leader along with the NSW Labor Party which is still to nominate a replacement for Michael Daly after the ALP’s defeat in March.

A recent decision of Reilly v Reilly demonstrates the importance of acting in the best interests of the principal (i.e. the person who appoints the attorney). In that case Mr Reilly granted an Enduring Power of Attorney to his wife.

After doing so, Mr Reilly was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

He subsequently died however prior to his death Mrs Reilly (acting as his attorney) transferred one of his farming properties to their daughters for nominal consideration.

Previously Mr Reilly had executed his Will and in that Will, he left the property to his son. Mrs Reilly was aware of the contents of the Will however she was of the view that the property should be transferred to the daughters rather than passing to the son under the terms of the Will.

In a hearing before Justice Lindsay in the Supreme Court it was held that the wife had committed a “fraud on the power”. Her actions in

transferring the property to the daughters were contrary to the prior wishes of the husband.

The wife appeared to be more interested in ensuring fairness between the children. She disregarded the wishes of her husband and appeared to rely on the power she had as attorney for her husband to transfer the property even though she was well aware that that was not what her husband wanted.

The decision was appealed and the appeal was dismissed.

Justice McFee stated that the wife “was in her capacity as (the husband’s) attorney seeking to do what she thought was in the best interest of the family, rather than what was in (her husband’s) interest”.

An attorney must always act in what he or she perceives to be the best interest of the principal. The attorney cannot put their own interests (or that of a third party) ahead of those of the principal.

 My husband and I  both vote for the opposite side of the political spectrum.

He is now in a euphoric mood and I am having an existential crisis? How do  I   Puzzles and pagination © Auspac Media  handle it?

I remember many years ago going to premarriage guidance sessions with a Catholic Priest, even though I wasn’t Catholic. At best  I was a lower-case agnostic with a Church of  England education. I don’t really remember     what these sessions involved, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t ask about  our attitudes towards  politics. Anyway, he ended up taking a leave  of absence after session  two,  potentially  because he could sense my hostility at having  to endure marriage advice from an unmarried priest so I could get married in a brick Catholic Church complete with graffiti, instead of on the beach. The same could be said for people without children who tell you where you are going wrong with your childrearing. Advice is always easier from a comfortable, ill-informed distance.

Which brings me to your election question. This is a challenging one, because the two main parties are so ideologically disparate, that it can make you question your shared values, your outlook on the world, your ideas about what is important and what isn’t. It can make you swat down his proffered democracy sausage because you are a vegetarian worried about the extinction of 1,200 animal species. It can make him ask how you can vote for a party that doesn’t have a solid economic backbone. It can make you both argue about these points as you walk past cheery men and women selling cupcakes. That is the nature of democracy. It is about being able to vote for your individual, closely-held beliefs, even if they conflict with those of your spouse.

 



HELPING learner drivers become safer drivers Supervisors of learner drivers will benefit from free MidCoast Council workshops being held across the region.

Attendees will leave armed with information, practical advice, and a structured approach to building the competency of their learner, along with confidence in teaching safe driving habits. The two-hour workshops will be held in Gloucester on Thursday 30 May, Wingham on Tuesday 4 June, Bulahdelah on Tuesday 11 June, Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest on Wednesday 12 June, Taree on Tuesday 18 June and Forster on Thursday 20 June.

Workshop content is designed to help supervisors prepare for the role by covering topics such as laws that apply to L and P licence holders, completing the Learner Driver log book, and the benefits of well supervised on-road driving experience. Following MidCoast Council’s adoption of a new Markets Policy in March, all market organisers across the region will need to apply to operate both new and existing markets. The new policy will provide a contemporary and consistent approach to managing regular markets across the region and will ensure all markets are operating under the same policy. ROBBIE T has been a professional musician for over 30 years, performing in various Bands such as the ‘Simple Minds’ tribute show, which was a mainstay on the Sydney circuit in the late ‘90s, as well as multiple ‘80’s cover Bands and 50’s/60’s Rock 'n Roll Bands that have played weddings, corporate functions and venues all over NSW. Since moving to Newcastle in 2001, Robbie T has created his craft in solo mode performing all over the Hunter, Central Coast

Grade 6 Side Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling

By The JAFFA 15 MAY Numbers were down today with the running of the Wednesday Nominated Triples where 48 bowlers participated.

New member, Graham Reynolds was welcomed to the Club and the Vice President Ross Barry presenting him with a bowls cloth and a voucher.

Graham’s previous club being Wentworthville Leagues.

The second game was selected to determine the winners and on the grass, Alan Greenhalgh, Doug Naylor and Bob Peady, with a +16 won the day.

The synthetic winners were Neil Kibble, Chris May and Rob Jones with an impressive +26.

The lucky draw went to Bob Skewes, Graham Reynolds and Mark Nightingale. .

The Myall Bistro voucher went to Barry Goode and the $15 vouchers to John Slater and Ross Barry.

18 May With the First National Dolphins Grade 7 side safely through to the Sectional play-offs, the First National Grade 4 and Grade 6 sides travelled to Mayfield West the contest the last round of the Pennant season.

Grade 4 demonstrated, during the closing games of the competition, that they have the fire power to mix it with the other clubs.

They finished their season with a 56-49 win with two team wins and a narrow loss in the third.

SPORT

Grade 6 side had a mixed season but they will have to be happy with a 59-59 draw against Mayfield West.

They won two games but unfortunately lost heavily in the remaining match-up to clinch a victory.

19 May The first round of the Club Championship Singles was played today with no real surprises.

Tony Coomer handed Dave Benson a walkover.

Rob Young accredited himself well against Ross Barry going down 31-22.

Jeff Baker accounted for the ageless Tom Parkinson 31-10.

Minor singles Champion, Col Saillard was too consistent for John Slater winning 31-8.

Ron Webster, despite dropping a 4 to Ron Green, won comfortably 31-17.

Peter Gurney led all the way to defeat Neil Kibble, 31-17 and in the last match, Doug Andrews proved too strong against Col Cameron, winning 31-18.

In other news: To close out the Pennant season the First National Grade 7 side will travel to Nelson Bay next Saturday to play their Sectional matches.

Supporters needed!

The Pennants Bash is set down for Friday 7th June in the Myall Bistro at 12pm and is open to everyone who made themselves available either as a reserve or player, Controlling Body or Umpire.

The second round of the Club Championship Singles will be played next Sunday with the cream starting to rise to the top.

THE soccer career of young Samuel Webb continues to go from strength to strength.

The 19 year old, has just returned home after representing Australia at the Arafura Games in Darwin.

Late last year, Samuel was one of 20 players chosen from around the country to play in the Australian Indigenous Football side, the Roos.

“It was awesome, just to travel to Darwin and represent both my country and my culture was amazing,” Samuel told News Of The Area.

The Arafura Games attracted competitors and teams from 40 countries, competing in a range of different sports.

The Roos, played five games over the week long tournament and made it to the final, coming home with Silver.

During the competition, Samuel scored 4 goals and was named ‘Player of the Tournament’.

“For me to be part of the Australian Indigenous side and being able to wear the green and gold was a real privilege”, Samuel said.

The women’s Indigenous

side, the Koalas also had great success winning Gold against Singapore.

Samuel’s passion for soccer began as a young boy playing football with the Tea Gardens Soccer Club.

He’s now halfway through a one-year contract with Lake Macquarie.

“We’re doing really well and hopeful of making the finals,” he said.

Mum Jan said, “Samuel, a Worimi man, was proud to represent his culture and his country and hopes to be a part of more tournaments like this in the future.”
