This marks a significant milestone for the third-generation, family-owned business, whose first butchery was opened by Wayne’s grandfather, Teddy, and his family, on their Markwell farm back in 1901.

“My father and two uncles, Marty and Vincent, worked on the farm and on-site butcher shop with my grandfather until my parents, Phonsie and Lila, took over,” said Mr Barry.

By Sandra MURRAY AFTER the deluge of last week’s East Coast Low with wild, wet, and windy conditions, local beaches and communities will take some time to recover.

Moving up from the Tasman, the Low moved up the coast causing flash flooding and large swells which smashed local beaches and bays.

Jimmys Beach, identified by the NSW government as a one of 15 “coastal hotspots” was hit especially hard, with the sea stripping the sand away, forming dangerous sand dune cliffs.

The beachside Boulevard road was temporarily closed to all except local residents with most access paths still closed.

The MidCoast Council now estimates that 40,000 cubic metres of sand will now be used to restore the beach.

This sand will be sourced from the 120,000 cubic

A widow with no immediate family left a significant gift in her Will to the Shrine of Saint Anthony of Padua Capuchin Friars Minor Hawthorn – Melbourne Victoria.”

Unfortunately, this was not a legal entity and also it was not clear from the Will for what purpose the funds were to be given. Was the gift for the upkeep of the shrine or to support the work of the monks associated with the shrine?

The executors of the Will sought directions from the Court on the basis that the gift was “ambiguous”. Judge Ward held that there was nothing in the evidence to indicate a more general intention to benefit the Order (i.e., other than as associated with the Shrine itself). She held

that the executors would be justified in paying the gift to the Trustees of the Order of the Capuchin Friars Minor and that they should pay the funds to maintain the Shrine and for activities of the Order.

This case is a reminder that when making a charitable gift in a Will it is important to identify the charity with precision and to specify the purpose of the gift. The impression from the reported case is that the executors were hoping that a wider purpose would be found. (see Re estate of the late Stasha Berger [2020] NSWSC 750 (18 June 2020).

Literature Awards are open The annual Port Stephens Literature Awards are now open and the judges are eagerly awaiting entries.

Judge Helen Mizrachi: Short story competition now open for aspiring writers.

THE annual Port Stephens Literature Awards are now open and the judges are eagerly awaiting entries.

The Myall region historically has had a high field of entries for these writing awards and judges are expecting this year to be no different.

Long time judge Helen Mizrachi said, “The ten preliminary judges all look forward to reading and

assessing the short stories.”

“That's why we need a month or so to come up with the top twenty,” she said.

Ms Mizrachi said, “Each judge gives marks to the stories and we then have a round table discussion to decide which ones are forwarded to the three finalists' judges.”

“They independently rate the stories from one to 20. Chief judge and former

Tanilba Bay school principal Lloyd Hogg then tallies the points to decide the winners,” she said.

“It's a long and exhaustive process but we have not come up with anything fairer over the last ten or 15 years the competition has been running,” Ms Mizrachi said.

PINDIMAR/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade welcomed seven new firefighters into the brigade this past weekend.

David Bright, Captain of Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade said that while the brigade does welcome new members regularly, it’s remarkable to have this many prior to the start of the new fire season.

“The whole of the RFS has seen a huge spike in membership applications as a result of the devastating bushfire season that we experienced last year,” he said.

“People saw the great job that the RFS do, and they’re keen to get in and help protect the community.”

The recruits go through months of online classes and practical work before getting to this stage of Bush Firefighter Assessment.

“With COVID-19 restrictions it’s been especially tough this year,

“We’re all unpaid volunteers, and it’s taken a lot of time and effort to get these members through.”

By Mitch LEES FOR Wendy Stein it’s become second nature to help those abroad and at home when they’re in need.

After just co-releasing a book and doing the media rounds to rally support for the plight of the women of Papua New Guinea as they struggle for basic medical care her services have been called on again.

Mid-way through an interview on Port Stephens FM to discuss the book ‘Rona Stole Our Relief’, Wendy lept into action to help save the life of her interviewer as he went into anaphylaxis.

Paddy Twohill suffered an anaphylactic reaction live on air as Wendy sat across from him in the broadcast booth and as luck would have it she was carrying an emergency EpiPen with her.

“I was about to go on the air and the producer said that Paddy was feeling a bit unwell and another presenter would be coming in to take over,” said Wendy.

“At first I thought, I hope he doesn’t have any flu-like symptoms or anything like that, but he was just starting to struggle in his speech and we quickly worked out he was going into anaphylaxis.

“He was just going to soldier on and let me do all the talking until someone could take over, but as his condition became more apparent I had to reach in my bag for my EpiPen and administer it to him.”

Adding to the already incredible scenario Wendy then drove Paddy to the Hospital to ensure he was treated promptly for the potentially lethal reaction.

“Paddy was going to wait for his wife to come and take him to the hospital but I was having none of that,” said Wendy.

“I bundled him into the car and got him in there to see the docs straight away.

“It was lucky I always carry an EpiPen with me as I too suffer from reactions.”

This is a stark reminder that those who suffer from anaphylaxis need to always carry their EpiPens in case of any emergency.

Paddy is on the mend and will be back on the local airwaves in no time, even sharing a joke with Wendy that his producer was trying to take him out to gain his spot.

The pen has again been proven mightier than the sword, or perhaps this time, the radio presenter’s word.

Littered Dorin’s Draws By Paul DORIN beaches after severe storms

BY ASHLEY CHRYSLER THE Myall Coast experienced severe storms last week which have caused extensive damage, including erosion, across shorelines.

The Boulevarde in Winda Woppa and Jimmy’s Beach in Hawks Nest were amongst the most critically impacted.

Rian Willmot, who frequently visits family in the area, noted that the local beaches which are usually so pristine, have been littered with rubbish and plastics following last week’s storms.

“There are empty bait packets, lolly wrappers, synthetic rope and netting, drink bottles,” he said.

“We photographed a pile of garbage collected in about 15 minutes as a testament to carelessness.”

“We had intended just to enjoy a walk, but this was too confronting to ignore.”

MidCoast Council said that unfortunately the rubbish in our oceans is a significant environmental issue.

Rubbish thrown on suburban streets and parks can wash through drains and into stormwater, which in most cases is discharged into rivers and streams, and eventually reaches the sea.

During large storms with significant water movement towards shores, the rubbish may become more visible to residents.

“We also thank local residents and volunteers who collect rubbish washed up on beaches to protect our environment and scenic amenity of our coastal environments.”

The Council also said that a clean-up will be undertaken as part of the restorative work once the weather event has passed.

THE late Jules Anseline will be sadly missed by his family and friends. We can be proud of our wonderful Golf Club and over the years, many people have contributed in many ways - Jules was one of those people.

Jules Anseline was an engineer design draughtsman working for the Newcastle Council in the 1970’s.

Jules and his wife Maureen with their three girls, enjoyed spending weekends and holidays at their cabin on Booner Street.

Fortunately Jules became involved in helping with the construction of the Golf Club and greens.

When asking Jules of his memories he recalls that time was of the essence, finances were tight and the building needed to be completed by November 30th 1977 in order to raise funds over the holiday season.

A concrete strike was at that time preventing progress, concrete required for the job had to be brought from Foster via the Mungo Brush road in order to beat the unions and get the job started.

The following history was taken from Norm Walker’s records.

Jules was a member of the building committee, pressure was put on the builder and under the supervision of Jules and Terry Loane the work progressed at an amazing rate.

The original plan had the front entrance facing north and the back at the Sanderling Avenue end.

The committee reversed this, Jules Anseline had to do considerable re-designing of the interior as the kitchen and storeroom were in the wrong positions as were other things.

Jules, who had won the original re-designing of the Clubhouse and engineering design at no cost to the Club, again came to the party with a design for the dining room and was in that capacity at the time of the official opening.

Surprise for French Group The U3A French students who attended George Nadal's Bastille Day lunch at Tillerman Restaurant on the 14th July were pleasantly surprised to learn that they had received honorary membership of the Confrerie Raisin d'Or de Sigoules.

THE U3A French students who attended George Nadal's Bastille Day lunch at Tillerman Restaurant on the 14th July were pleasantly surprised to learn that they had received honorary membership of the Confrerie Raisin d'Or de Sigoules.

The badge of the Confrerie (Brotherhood) was distributed by Tillerman's owner Peter Hodges who has been the Ambassador of the

Confrerie to Australia since 2011.

A confrerie was originally a localised medieval order that was established to oversee and protect the population.

They were banned by Robespierre during the Revolution and reinstated

by Marechal Petain during World War Two. The modern function of the confrerie is to promote regional produce through colourful parades and gatherings such as the one that occurred this week in

Tea Gardens.

During the four course lunch the students sang the French songs which many had sung at school, but as usual, the rousing Marseillaise anthem was the great favourite. This year was special because the group had just received their honorary membership of the Confrerie and some will look forward to singing it again when they visit the village of Sigoules in the beautiful Aquitaine region of France.

Super Heroes program recognised at Club FOLLOWING on from Debbie Booth winning volunteer of the year at the recent Hunter 2019/2020 SLS Branch Awards of Excellence, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (TGHN SLSC) took out the prestigious Community Education program of the year with their “Super Heroes” program.

What an asset TGHN SLSC is for our local community.

The SLS Club’s "Superhero's" program was developed as a means to try and keep the Club’s Youth Group connected. The thought if the club could come up with functions where the Youth group could socialise it was hoped it would assist with forging friendships and

retaining this age group as Patrolling Members to help keep our beach safe for locals and visitors.

What the Club got back from this program was far more widespread, rewarding and beneficial to members and the community than anyone had dared hope for.

This program became a great way for the Youth of TGHN SLSC to connect and have purpose individually and as a team. The group was led by its younger members and it helped promote our youth within the club and the community.

Bridge Club commentary Hawks Nest Bridge Club

By Esther DIGBY LIKE many Clubs and Organisations in the area, Hawks Nest Bridge Club mourns the passing of John Younghusband.

Much has already been written about his contribution to the community.

John was an active member of the Club for

many years. He served on the committee and acted as a Director, overseeing the appropriate conduct of games.

He was a very able player himself and probably one of the longest playing, having learnt bridge as a child.

His wife, Jo, is also a regular bridge player and we send our condolences and best wishes to her and

the family.

The end of year financial report has recently been circulated to members and shows a more positive financial situation than expected at the onset of the coronavirus restrictions.

This is due to the positive attitude and support of members, as well as our Treasurer’s effective management which includes organizing

After 100mm of rain I was surprised that the grass was playable and I’m sure the players found it somewhat slow.

For those following the action, Geoff Muggleton and Dennis Ashbridge were taking on Bob Peady and Doug Naylor and Ron Green and Jeff Baker opposed Peter Gurney and Chris Ross.

Chris was substituting for the injured John Parkinson.

In the first mentioned game Bob and Doug just could not get their game together and would have been disappointed with their showing against the “long bow” men.

They went down 8-24.

In contrast, the remaining match was an arm wrestle with some great bowls played by all contestants.

It was nip and tuck all the way with the, lead changing all the time and players trading bowl for bowl.

It went down to the wire with Ron and Jeff having the edge to win 17-14.

The wins by both teams ensured a fantastic final.

19 July: A beautiful winter’s day greeted contestants for the Club Championship Pairs final with; Geoffrey Muggleton and Dennis Ashbridge opposing Ron Green and Jeff Baker The match-up and the weather ensured a good gallery and spectators were not to be disappointed.

Try as they might, Geoffrey and Dennis just could not manage the one shot to force an extra end and finally Ron and Jeff managed another to win the match 16-14.

Notification of project proposal and registration of interest under Heritage NSW, Department of Premier & Cabinet policy Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010 (Stage 1) – Proposed relocation of caravan cabins located at Stockton Lot 2 DP 12499904 McCardle Cultural heritage (MCH) have been engaged by City of Newcastle Council to prepare an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA) and Section 90 Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) application, if required, for the proposed relocation of caravan cabins located at Stockton (Lot 2 DP 12499904).

The purpose of community consultation with Aboriginal people is to assist the proposed applicant in the preparation of the AHIP application if required and to assist the Chief Executive of the Heritage NSW, Department of Premier & Cabinet policy in his or her consideration and determination of the application should an AHIP be required.

In compliance with the BCD policy - Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010, MCH would like to extend an invitation to Aboriginal people who hold cultural knowledge relevant to the proposed project area and who can determine the significance of Aboriginal object(s) and/or place(s) in the area of the proposed project to register an interest in the consultation process for this project.

Written registrations must be forward to MCH (P.O. Box 166 Adamstown, NSW, 2289; penny@ mcheritage.com.au no later than C.O.B. 6 August 2020.

All registered parties will then be contacted to discuss the project in compliance with the BCD policy. If you register your interest in this project, please also nominate your preferred option to receive the initial information.
