This quiet moment will be an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution and suffering of all those who have and continue to serve.

The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon and was published in 'London in the Winnowing Fan'. 'Poems of the Great War in 1914'. The

verse, which became the League Ode, was already used in association with Commemoration Services in Australia in 1921.

MIDCOAST Council is livestreaming its meetings during the COVID-19 restrictions, begining with its Wednesday 22 April meeting.

Members of the community can watch the proceedings via Council’s website, when the meeting is livestreamed from 2pm.

At the meeting Councillors will consider a package of measures designed to support the community through the COVID19 restrictions period, including support for businesses such as rent relief for council tenants and assistance with trade waste charges and payment arrangements available for ratepayers experiencing financial hardship due to the situation.

“Council is continuing to deliver essential services such as water, sewer, road maintenance and waste services and we are focused on delivering services for our community during this time,” General Manager Adrian Panuccio explained.

Locals are also encouraged to take time to exercise and walk past the War Memorials at Tea Gardens, Stroud, and Bulahdelah.

Bulahdelah War Memorial Hall is offering a pre-ANZAC Gardening Special.

The person behind the idea, Jeff Carryer, told NOTA, “We are offering two hours of weeding and pruning at the War Memorial Hall and gardens, limited to one or two people at a time. Come along, either alone or with one close person, to volunteer safely in our gardens. Volunteers receive free coffee and cake from Robyns Café.”

PROPERTY settlements that included provision for a superannuation split may have been negotiated and filed for orders, pre COVID 19. Some parties to those settlements have been anxiously watching their super balances bounce around, wondering whether there will there be a positive or negative impact on them when the splitting orders are implemented in accordance with the legislation and SIS regulations.

Orders for superannuation splitting must nominate an operative time to take effect. It is usually the beginning of the 4th business day after the orders have been served on the Fund’s trustee.

Those concerned therefore need to enquire when the Orders were served on the trustee.

COVID 19 restrictions have caused disruption to manyincluding Fund trustees, so there may be delays in receiving notice of processed splits. If the entitlement to be split is in the

growth phase, the trustee must adjust the base amount to be split from the operative time until it is paid, rolled over or a new interest is created. Depending on the rate of interest that applied to the superannuation interest in the adjustment period, the base amount may be adjusted by a positive amount or a negative amount or, if the rate was nil, not adjusted at all.

If you are concerned about the implementation of superannuation splitting orders then you should complain directly to the trustee using their internal dispute resolution process. If you are still dissatisfied (and it is not a SMSF) you may wish to complain to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). In that event we can also help identify the issues you want to complain about and assist you to collate the necessary documents.

Pipes are an Eyesore Dear News Of The Area, YES I agree with Col Nicholson, “Hawks Nest shows exposed Sand Transfer pipes at Hawks Nest” (edition 16 April 2020).

There are so many sections where the massive pipe junction is exposed.

Also the track to the sand transfer station that has really unsightly green silt fencing that is deteriorating and useless for silt retention.

Council are really indifferent to this situation of their own creation.

Very sad. Such an eyesore!!!

COVID Update plus Sentinel Testing?

By Sandra MURRAY NSW Health advise that there were 2,957 cases in NSW and 29 deaths as at 17 April.

For comparison, last week NOTA reported there were 2,854 cases (up 103 this week) and 24 deaths.

Of the confirmed NSW cases, 276 are in the Hunter New England Health District (as at 18 April) up from 270 reported last week.

Hunter New England Health District reports that the infection rate is steady with no new cases reported in the preceding 24 hours.

Also, in NSW from 20 April, anyone caught coughing or spitting on any worker will face a $5000 on-the-spot fine.

Workers are now defined as everyone working during the COVID-19 pandemic, including supermarket, retail and transport workers.

This extends the tough measures originally introduced to protect health workers, police, pharmacists, paramedics and public officials.

Switching to a national level, there are now 6,606 cases and 70 deaths as at 3pm on 19 April.

For comparison, last week NOTA reported there were 6,313 cases and 59 deaths.

On 16 April, the National Cabinet agreed to a framework for the next steps in responding to the virus and the conditions for their eventual relaxation.

Such steps must be underpinned by a strong public health response that enables case and contact identification and management, supports continued surge capacity in healthcare, and a clear communications plan.

Contact identification and communication are also the drivers behind two Australian Government apps free for mobile devices.

Available already is the Coronavirus Australia app which communicates official information and advice about COVID-19.

This week, the government will release the COVID-19 Trace App. The voluntary app aims to digitise the contact tracing process, currently done by hardworking people.

Tracing is critical for working out how a person contracted COVID-19 and who they have been in contact with while infectious.

It is a time consuming task, often identifying thousands of contacts.

The new free app will speed up this process.

If the app on your mobile has been within 15 minutes duration of other app users and within 1.5 metres, both

mobiles will automatically swap phone numbers.

All numbers will be stored encrypted on both mobiles for 21 days.

If an app user then tests positive to COVID-19 at any time, they can provide consent for those numbers to be provided safely to health professionals.

Health professionals will then carefully and discreetly contact all the people you’ve been in contact with to trace the virus, support infected people and protect the community.

To be effective, 40 percent of the population must opt-in.

Effective use will support easing social restrictions.

Understandably, people are concerned about their privacy.

The App is going through a privacy impact assessment with the help of the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

It will not trace your location.

Im addition, the Australian and NSW governments are supporting increased sentinel testing This involves selecting particular groups in the community for comprehensive testing, even if no symptoms are evident.

The process helps identify possible virus ‘hotspots’ in a systemic way.

Sentinel testing, for example, could be conducted on all health workers in the first instance.

THIS sounds quite romantic. A tragedy of Shakespearian proportions has beset Raymond Terrace. We have the Capulet family from Aphrasia Way and the Montagues from Jacaranda Avenue, foes since a long-ago misdemeanour when Roger Capulet reversed his Toyota Hilux into Peter Montague’s Kia in the Aldi carpark. And yet, with the odds against them, Nadia Montague’s captivating smile entranced Nathan Capulet after she served him a chicken schnitzel with Dianne sauce at the Junction Inn Hotel. Since then they have been sneaking out to the movies and holding hands at the local food court, but now all hell has descended and both are locked in their respective homes, desperately trying to escape under the guise of buying toilet paper or doing personal training sessions in the park, or checking up on the progress of their Job Keeper payment, all under the watchful eye of the local law enforcers who have received advanced training in ‘Teenage Shenanigans during COVID-19’.

What will become of the Montagues and the Capulets of Raymond Terrace? I fear a fateful end to this harrowing tale of unrealised passion and subterfuge. Nathan will perhaps spot Nadia motionless in the local park and, thinking she has tried to take her own life, he will attempt to resuscitate her, only to be pounced on and handcuffed by Constable Tybalt for not observing social distancing rules. Alas, Nadia had simply been trying to meditate away the 5G radiation (sub plot involving Louella the local yogi, whale whisperer and conspiracy theorist). Nathan struggles, but he is no match for Constable Tybalt who locks him away in a shared cell where Nathan is now in far closer proximity to human touch than he has been in a long time (unfortunately this time it is with Rodrigo who has a teardrop tattoo, a hacking cough and night sweats). Meanwhile, bored out of her brain, Nadia takes up gaming and progresses from playing Grand Theft Auto to being headhunted by the Federal Government as a software design trouble shooter. She is put on the Corona tracking app taskforce but true to her undying devotion for Nathan, she corrupts the software and inserts a complex unencrypting system that divulges the GPS co-ordinates of every public servant at any given time of day or night.

WINTER is just over a month away and the cooler temperatures present a challenge for homeless people in Newcastle and surrounding areas.

Many homeless people living in cars, sleeping rough or in shelters are vulnerable to serious physical and mental health issues.

The Tea Gardens Red Cross is seeking to provide new warm clothing and rugs to help.

Beanies, scarfs, socks, and rugs (single bed size) are all needed to help keep homeless people warm.

Due to the health risks posed by COVID-19 and for better hygiene, these items must all be new.

If you can assist, please drop off your donations at 6 Settlers Way, Tea Gardens.

From this address the Red Cross is checking and coordinating donations to ensure delivery to those most in need.

Janet Baker, the President of the local Red Cross, also advised NOTA, ”The Bush Fire relief is going well and now at the stage where impacted people are starting to rebuild their homes. Safety inspection plans are being submitted to relevant local Councils with assistance from the Red Cross.”

Janet added, “For help during these challenging times because of the coronavirus, the Red Cross has set up a COVID Connect service. This is a free social phone call to provide support and community connection for people who are feeling socially isolated as a result of COVID-19. You can receive a call every day if you wish.”

“The My Skills website has been tailored to offer more ways for Australians to improve their qualifications online,” Dr Gillespie said.

You can now search an increased online offering of registered training organisations (RTOs) and vocational education and training (VET) options currently available to continue to train for the future.

“It is crucial we focus on giving Australians more training and career opportunities during these challenging times.”

“As more Australians stay at home, we want them to be able to make the most of this time by upskilling and preparing themselves for future opportunities.”

There is a large number of course offerings from a range of training institutions from around the country and potentially even something that may not have been available to them before.

“A VET qualification opens the door to so many job opportunities, and nationally recognised qualifications can be gained in a matter of months,” said Dr Gillespie.

Locals who fought

IN the lead up to a quiet ANZAC, NOTA looks back at the young local soldiers who gave their lives in Service in the Great War. In 2015, the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family History Group and the Myall Coast Historical Society identified 22 young men who served in the Great War. One of these was Duncan McRae from Tea Gardens.

His Grandfather, of the same name, and wife Eliza settled in the Myall Lakes area in 1862 and started saw milling and shipping.

They had a big family of eleven children, most whom went on to help the local enterprise.

One of those children was Duncan’s Dad, Alexander, who married Emily Ward, and they loved and lived in

Tea Gardens.

Their Son, Duncan Christopher McRae (pictured) was born in 1868.

He joined the Army on the 1 May 1916, keen to fight in the Great War, regarded by many young people as a great adventure.

After completing basic training, he embarked from Sydney with the 4th Reinforcements aboard the crowded, His Majesty’s Transport (HMAT) ship, the Borda (A30) on 17 October 1916 (pictured).

Thirteen months later and a long way from home, Duncan died from terrible wounds inflicted during the Battle of Messines, Belgium.

q Departing excitement, off to the Great War on His Majesty’s Transport (HMAT) ship, the Borda (A30). started out as a British plan to attack the Germans to destroy their defences along 16km of high ground, south of Ypres.

The Battle would also be the first time Australians and New Zealanders were to fight side by side since the Gallipoli campaign of 1915.

In Messines, the Germans were using the high ground to their advantage.

The fierce battle started with Australian soldiers planning to secretly detonate 19 large landmines underneath the entrenched German forces.

This story is depicted in the Australian War Movie, Beneath Hill 60, which was released 15 April 2010.

In the lead up to the massive detonation the Germans shelled the surrounding forest with deadly gas, killing 500 and inflicting 2000 casualties.

This did not stop the ANZACS. The next day, Hill 60 exploded and “many thousands of German troops were simply obliterated as

the earth erupted beneath them.”

ANZACS climbed out of their trenches and charged the Germans.

The battle was a tactical and strategic success.

The Third Division was ‘blooded’ in its first major battle of the Great War. Two Australian Victoria

Crosses were awarded to Robert Grieve and John Carroll.

There were terrible losses: over 26,000 soldiers died, 13,500 of them ANZACs. One was Duncan, injured somewhere out on the bloody battlefield on 7 June 1917.

He never came back to Tea Gardens He was buried alongside 1,703 other Australian soldiers in the Trois Arbres Cemetery in France.

Across Australia, crowds gathered in the thousands in cities and towns to celebrate the end of the conflict and to commemorate the men and women who served so bravely.

15 August 1945 was declared a public holiday and celebrations continued into the evening – shops were closed, but theatres, dance halls and pubs remained open.

For many in Australia the end of the war in the Pacific was marked by celebration. For others it was a day of sombre commemoration and relief.

For those who had lost loved ones, the cost was high - almost 40,000 Australians had been killed out of around one million who had served.

This year we also mark the 105th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. In the fire of battle they forged the Anzac spirit which endures in the bravery of the Australian Defence Force to this day.

Fifty years ago, Australia began to wind down its military effort in Vietnam with the departure of the 8th Battalion. Australians continued to serve in this theatre until December 1972 in an advisory capacity.

Australians continue to serve with distinction in conflict and peacekeeping around the world and this Anzac Day we commemorate more than a century of service.

State and territory Returned and Services Leagues (RSLs) have made the difficult decision to cancel local Anzac Day services on 25 April 2020.

And if you know someone who has served in the Australian Defence Force, get in contact and let them know you're thinking of them.

While many of us mark Anzac Day by attending a dawn service or visiting the local RSL, only a selection of dawn services will be held across the country, which the public have been asked not to attend.

As a nation and as a community, we have a responsibility to ensure we will always remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have served our nation in times of war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, and the more than 102,000 who have died as a result.

This decision has not been made lightly and has taken into consideration concerns about the welfare of Australians and slowing the spread of coronavirus.

The Last Post The Last Post historically has been used to signify the end of the day. It is played during ceremonies to serve as a tribute to the dead.

Reveille & Rouse Reveille is a bright, cheerful call that woke soldiers at dawn and called them to duty. Rouse is a shorter bugle call normally sounded alongside The Last Post at remembrance services, except the Dawn Service when Reveille is played.

The Ode

Governments are committed to working with the RSL and other veteran and community organisations on how we best commemorate Anzac Day this year.

On 25 April 2020 I encourage you to join me in honouring those who have served our nation by watching the national Anzac Day service to be broadcast from the Australian War Memorial.

Rosemary is worn as a symbol of remembrance on Anzac Day. It is a herb found growing wild on the Gallipoli Peninsula.The Flanders Poppy is also becoming increasingly associated with Anzac Day, although it was traditionally only worn on Remembrance Day, November 11.

The Ode is the fourth stanza of Laurence Binyon’s (1869-1943) poem, ‘For the Fallen’, and has been recited in ceremonies since 1919.

The VP Day Girl

• 1 cup each of plain flour, sugar, rolled oats and coconut • 4 ounces butter (115g) • 1 tablespoon treacle (golden syrup) • 2 tablespoons boiling water

Lois Anne Drew (nee Martin) grew up in Richmond,Victoria. During the Second World War she worked at the Kodak Factory in Abbotsford.

With Germany defeated and Victory in Europe Day marked on 8 May 1945, Australia waited hopefully for Victory in the Pacific.

The celebrations on VP Day on August 15 were joyous and chaotic. In major cities and towns across Australia thousands of people flocked to the streets to dance and sing, including Lois. In preparation for this day, Lois knitted this vest and wore it at celebrations in Melbourne.

Lois was identified as the woman in this photo when the Herald Sun printed it in August 1995 to help find her. Lois’ husband Bill identified her and showed the knitted vest as proof.

Lois’ vest is now on display in the Second World War Gallery at the Australian War Memorial.

A NZAC BI S CUI TS The origin of the ANZAC biscuit Army biscuits, known as Anzac wafers or tiles, were a hard biscuit eaten by soldiers as a bread substitute. They were often ground up and eaten as porridge.

The Anzac biscuit we are familiar with today was developed by the mothers, wives and girlfriends of our soldiers. A sweet biscuit made of rolled oats and bound with golden syrup or treacle (eggs were scarce during the war) were sent to the frontline by ships of the Merchant Navy.

• 1 teaspoon bi-carbonate soda

Method 1. Grease tray and pre-heat oven to 180°C. 2. Combine dry ingredients.

3. Melt together butter and golden syrup.

Combine water and bi-carbonate soda – add to butter mixture.

4. Mix butter mixture and dry ingredients.

5. Drop teaspoons of mixture onto tray.

6. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes or until golden.

Allow to cool on tray for a few minutes before transferring to cooling racks. * Makes approximately 35 biscuits (From an original recipe provided by Mr Bob Lawson, an ANZAC present at the Gallipoli landing.)

there are around 16,000 staff working across 27 hospitals and many local medical centres.

Every working day, first responders can come into direct contact with the virus.

This poses a serious health risk to themselves, their families and their capacity to continue to work and/or volunteer.

NOTA caught up with local lifeguards, and volunteer fire and rescue first responders for some insights into how they are handling these risks.

Megan and Millie are both highly qualified Midcoast Council lifeguards at Bennet’s Beach, Hawks Nest.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and during the April school holidays, their role has shifted to ensuring locals stay safe and maintain social distancing.

Megan informed NOTA, “The beach is closed.

You can walk, swim and exercise but no sunbaking or making yourself comfortable, especially in groups. We are coming to the end of a quiet season with a few rescues and only one shark alarm.

We are upholding the COVID-19 social distancing requirements to the end of the season.”

Lifeguard Patrols will be operating from 9am until 5pm until Sunday 26 April, the last day of school holidays.

NSW schools will reopen from Monday 27 April, however current state government advice is to keep children home if possible.

Group Captain Jim Wisemantel and Crew Member, Leon Katz (also a plumber), are two of 16 volunteers at the Tea Gardens NSW Fire and Rescue Station.

Leon Katz stated, “Life at the station has changed a fair bit under COVID-19.

We can only have four Fire and Rescue volunteers here at any point in time.

We have a tag system in place on the wall, so we know how many of us are on duty. Crew members each take a tag from the wall when onsite. The tags are located directly above our hygiene station.

Unfortunately, during this time no visitors, including children, are permitted.

Hygiene is paramount. We are being continuously updated with information about how to work in this environment. We continue to respond to automatic fire alarms or AFAs, often from local retirement homes. If the calls are from high care facilities we cannot send the whole crew in, just one crew member with appropriate personal protective equipment. Generally, calls
