New Leaders Step Up

Boost for Bulahdelah and Pindimar roads OVER $1-million in improvements to the road network in and around Bulahdelah and Pindimar have just been completed and Mid Coast Council will begin next month, on sealing a further onekilometre of Bombah Point Rd. When people talk about contesting a will, they are talking about family provision claims. Under the Succession Act, only certain classes of people are eligible to make a family provision claim. These are: a) a spouse; b) a de facto spouse; c) a child; d) a former spouse; e) a person who was i. wholly or partially dependant on the deceased at any particular time; and ii. either a grandchild or a member of the same household as the deceased at any particular time; or f) a person in a close personal relationship with the deceased.

A step child does not fall within

the definition of a child for the purpose of a family provision claim. However, this does not mean a step child is necessarily barred from making a claim as they could fall into category e.

Your step child will be an eligible person to make a family provision claim against your estate where he or she has lived in your household at any particular time in your life and has been at least partly dependant on you during any particular time in your life. It is not necessary that he or she was dependant on you at the same time as living with you, they can be at different times.

BULAHDELAH Central School has welcomed its 2018 Primary student leaders who have officially taken up their new positions.

Following a tough selection process, Sasha Middleton and Ruby Plummer were announced as the Primary School Captains and Chanai Jenner and Nate Redman as Vice-Captains.

Ruby said being elected to the position is a dream come true.

“I have wanted to be a Captain ever since I started Kindy,” she said.

“I hope to be a good role model and I am looking forward

to helping make sure the school continues to be a great place to learn.”

The young leaders’ new duties include leading morning assemblies, being involved in the Kindy Buddy Program and taking part in the Student Representative Council.

They will also represent the school in the wider community throughout the year.

Sasha said the role is all about setting a good example and helping others.

“It will be a great experience and will help build our confidence and leadership skills,” she said.

“It is a big responsibility and we will all play a part in promoting the school values.”

Councillors Counselled BRINGING together 11 Councillors to harmoniously represent the entire MidCoast region after the forced merger was always going to be a challenge.

With recent claims of “grandstanding” and “point scoring” by some Councillors, it appears that cracks have formed amongst the ranks.

A session with a Resolution Facilitator recently hosted by Council may be a step towards moving forward as a cohesive team.

Acting in the General Manager position last week, MidCoast Director Paul De Szell said the facilitated session was organised to guide Councillors through decision-making processes.

“The primary purpose was for Councillors to have a discussion around how they want to work together and build a foundation, that is based on trust and cohesion,

to ensure good outcomes for the community,” he said.

“This is a standard and constructive practice for Councils following an election and particularly in Councils that were recently merged.”

Signs of division were evident at the 16 January Extraordinary Meeting which failed to reach a quorum, and again at the following meeting where discussions became “heated” at times.

Mr De Szell said Council has been faced with “some very important and difficult decisions over the past few months”.

“Councillors have been having robust discussions to ensure the decisions being made are in the best interests of the community,” he said.

News Of The Area has been informed that not all Councillors attended the facilitated session.

JIMMY’S BEACH: Sand back after January Storms.

When Bulahdelah Library relocated to the Rural Transaction Centre (RTC) last year, the advice from MidCoast Council was simply to use it or lose it.

WHEN Bulahdelah Library relocated to the Rural Transaction Centre (RTC) last year, the advice from MidCoast Council was simply to use it or lose it.

And according to the latest figures from Council, that’s exactly what the community has done.

Borrowing rates have soared, increasing by almost 40 percent over the last 12 months, and membership continues to grow.

RTC staff, who are ably assisted by a dedicated band of volunteers, say this is a direct result of greater community involvement.

“We have a lot of people come in to use the facility each day, and new members sign up each week,” staff member Pat Tate said.

“This gives us confidence that the Library remains an important service for our community.”

The Library stocks over 3,500 items for loan, including an extensive range of fiction, non-fiction and large print books, magazines, DVDs and CDs. Pat said stock is rotated regularly between the 11 MidCoast Libraries, ensuring there are always plenty of new titles on the shelves.

But just 12 months ago, Bulahdelah had the lowest borrowing rates in the region and was set to close.

In a bid to maintain the service, Council agreed to move the Library to the RTC for a 12-month trial, with performance indicators set to determine the success.

The recent review of Library usage shows borrowing rates are right on track, with hundreds of residents walking through the doors in 2017 and collectively checking out 5,915 items.

With a large bank of computers available for use, the Library also helped countless members connect online.

While these trends are positive, the figures show the number of active members falls slightly short of the target set by Council.

Pat said the Library is looking forward to continuing to build membership in the coming months to ensure the service is maintained in 2018 and beyond.

Feel the Love at Live! Live! Live!

These concerts are cabaret style tables, and are held on the third Thursday encouraged to sing along if I WENT to this year’s first of each month at the Tea you wish to. Some people performance of Live! Live! Gardens Baptist Church Hall, get up and dance. We had a Live! last week, and it was starting at 2PM and ending at great Barn Dance last week just like coming home to 4PM. They are NOT church which shook away a few loved ones after a long trip services. cobwebs and brought back away.

The music is secular, some good memories.

As people came all the stuff we listened to through the door, it was on the radio when we were Rockin’ Robin (Petros) beautiful to see the way growing up. You sit at little Tea Gardens they greeted each other after the three month break since the Christmas show last November (see photo).

I’ve been going to these free concerts for a couple of years now, and over that time I’ve witnessed people who were strangers become good friends.

And this is why people come. It’s not just for the music, although the music is always great, taking us back to those happy days when we were young as well as young at heart.

People come because they experience the warmth of caring friendship, and engage in meaningful q New Start playing at Live! Live! conversation over the free Live! November 2017 afternoon tea.

Dear Mrs LK, Groovin’ the Moo sounds pretty placid. When I say those words I imagine a small group of happy hippies in their 60s, blissed out in a meadow with some cows, a flute and a tambourine. They are singing songs such as Sounds of Silence and California Dreamin’.

Maybe they are smoking some cow dung, but that’s about as radical as it gets. They can’t cause too much mischief because they keep tripping over their flares and falling over.

As the sun sets, they sit in a circle singing Kumbaya and drinking kombucha.

Of course if that was the reality of Groovin’ the Moo, your 14-year-old daughter wouldn’t want to attend. So think about what she would like to attend. I’d imagine it would be an event with hundreds of young people full of euphoria listening to suggestive lyrics, making sweaty human pyramids, moshing and getting lit (I’m not sure what getting lit is, but it can’t be good thing).

The positive in all of this is that these events are well organised with lots of security.

There will also be a whole lot of parents, just like you, Mrs LK, who will attend the event wearing some sort of camouflage to spy on your offspring to make sure they are safe.

And the 14-year-old kids will be thinking: What are all these hippy has-beens doing at our event? Didn’t they get over all of this at Woodstock? Why are they gate crashing?

And now they are dancing! And now they are moshing! And now they are getting lit!

Aaaaaargh, Sebastian, is that your father dancing with my mother to Grinspoon? Oh my God, she’s getting up on his shoulders. My eyes are burning with embarrassment. Let’s get out of here and watch a movie. This is so hideous.

By Lynda RICHARDS NOTHING to report about results from social bowls played as numbers down due to weather, Pennant season, holidays and unfortunately ill health.

Nine keen bowlers had a “roll up” on Tuesday. No play on Thursday.

On Tuesday 13th February our Grade 2 Pennant teams played at home.

Both teams scoring convincing wins against Heaton Birmingham Gardens.

This win added 5 points to their Master Board giving them a total of 15, 2nd place in their section.

At this point Soldiers Point (Blue) leading on 18 points, Heaton Birmingham Gardens in 3rd place with 14 and Lemon Tree Passage on 3. Grade 4 teams played away at Heaton Birmingham with a win and a loss here the 4’s just added 1 point to their

tally.

Master Board scores Stockton (Blue) 18, Tea Gardens 16, Heaton Birmingham Gardens 15 and Soldiers Point (Blue) 6. All bowlers/supporters knew Thursday would be a challenging day for our Pennant teams. Both Grades in 2nd place in their section.

Fortunately here one of our teams had a very good win and the other lost, thankfully by a much narrower margin than the 16 shots that they were losing by at one stage. Overall the Grade 4 team scored 4 points.

14 February For some Valentine’s Day is normally associated with red roses and romance, for others it will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

I’m still trying hard to forget!

Forty-six players braved the warm weather for 16 ends of Bowls today as the forecast was not favourable for the afternoon.

The weather clock was used to ensure player safety and was frequently referred to throughout the morning.

The winners on the day were Peter Cheney, Tom Short, Graham Kelly and an out of towner, Dennis Ashbridge They had a score of +32.

The normal barrel and draw prizes were featured with the Myall Bistro voucher going to Pip Sullivan.

Next Wednesday will see the return to Nominated Triples when both greens will be in play.

The day will be dedicated to our past and long-term President Ken McKeown, who is heading off down the road to enjoy a well-earned retirement 16 February Friday Budget Open Pairs was played today and the 14 players were given the privilege to play on the grass green.

After so long on the synthetic it was a little hard

18 February Sunday Mixed bowls was well attended today with 24 players competing in hot weather tempered by the usual sea breeze.

The winners were Vaughan Bryant, (one of our new recruits), David Ransome and Julie Kennedy.

The Lucky Losers were Ann Remment, Rob Young and Gary Wynne.

The ever reliable Barry Goode and John Atherton organised the lunch.

Player comfort was the order of the day with players required to take mandatory, 5 minute, breaks and to drink plenty of liquids.

The Country Club

is ordering the latest temperature/humidity monitoring device which will sound a warning when playing conditions become extreme.

This will replace the somewhat antiquated system which requires knowledge of advanced mathematics and how to work out the “square root on the hypotenuse”.

Beyond our feeble brains!

In other news: The Club Minor Pairs are next on the club championship agenda with the draw now completed and with play commencing next weekend Saturday and Sunday 24-25 February.

Currently there are 11 teams entered, a big improvement on last year where the competition was abandoned due to lack of entries.

Nominations are being received for the Club Major Pairs Championship which will commence on Saturday 17 March.

Pool Value Family Home uncovered that younger generations are happy to pay extra for a property with a pool, with nearly half (47.7%) in the Generation Y demographic comfortable with spending up to an extra $20,000 compared to 31.6% who were 55 years and older.

Reinforcing that younger people value pools more, less than one in three Generation Y respondents declared a pool added no value to a house, versus more than half of over 55 year olds.

First National Hawks Nest principal John Rumble told News Of The Area, “A home with a pool is often the Australian dream but the investment return should be carefully analysed.”

“With this in mind, it’s not entirely surprising that Australians living the cooler parts of the country don’t value pools as highly as those in warmer areas,” he said.

“Pools remain the centre of family entertainment and fun in the summer months, which is no doubt why we see younger people ascribing more value to homes with pools than older generations,” Mr Rumble said.

RECENT research from Lendi has revealed nearly half (39.8%) of Australians wouldn’t pay more for a property with a pool, followed by 15.7% who are happy to allow $10,000 in the budget, and 10.8% would stretch to $20,000 more for a house with a pool.

Interestingly, Australians living in Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia are happier than those in other states to pay more for a house with a pool, with about 5% more confirming they are happy to pay up to $20,000 more for a house with a pool.

One in seven Australians admitted they would be happy to part with $50,000 or more, with 5.8% responding with valuations upwards of $200,000, which approximately returns the cost of the pool and its installation.

The research also revealed men are happier to pay more for a house with a pool than women, with 44.9% of male respondents who said they would pay up to $20,000 more for a house with a pool compared to 34.6%.

GRAHAMSTOWN ROAD TEMPORARY CLOSURE Due to construction work Grahamstown Road will be closed for approximately five weeks from Tuesday 20 February 2018.

WHO needs the Winter Olympics when we’ve got our own Gold Medal winners right here in the Myall.

In fact, members of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club have just had their best ever performance at the first medal carnival of the season at the recent Hunter Branch Championship held at Stockton beach.

All competitors medalled with the club winning 30 Gold, six Silver and six Bronze Medals and being the most successful club in the surfboat arena.

“The highlight was the Under 19 crew of Rex Shelton, Tom McClennan, Cody Ross, Tyler Love and Max Young,” Peter Rogers told News Of The Area. “ They are the first U/19 crew to represent the club and won Gold in only their second carnival.

Jan Logue continued her gold medal run on the sand taking away three Gold medals in the one kilometre beach run, beach flags and sprint.

Andrew Stubbs combined a gold medal in the surfboat masters with a Gold in the two kilometre beach run.

Going for the double Sharon Taylor and Linda Stubbs won gold and silver respectively in their beach run, sprint and flags. Away from the sand, Sharon and Linda also showed their skills in the surf, taking Silver and Bronze in the Surf Race and Gold and Silver in the rescue tube.

Linda McKay joined in to take out Gold in her Surf Race Age Group and Gold in her rescue tube event.

Katrina Hellicar came home with a Silver in her surf race in challenging

conditions.

Not to be outdone by the ladies, Michaell Rose showed the men could be just as good, winning Silver in the Surf Race.

All Surfboat Crews medalled.

“No other club was able to do this and something the club and supporters should be very proud of,” Steve Howell, Club President, Masters Rower and Sweep said., “The Open Ladies crew, the Master’s EC’s, the Masters Long Strokers and the U/19’s all won Gold Medals, while the Open Mens won bronze only being pipped on the line with three boats finishing on the same wave.”

HNTG SLSC finished with the most surfboat Gold Medals of any club in the Hunter Branch.

The club now heads to Pacific Palms for the Battle of the Boats weekend in preparation for the State Titles.
