Memories of Vietnam

By Doug CONNOR TUESDAY 18 August marked Vietnam Veterans Day, an occasion commemorating those who served and died in the Vietnam War. One such man is James Fitzsimon, now of Tea Gardens, who fought in Vietnam with the 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR) from 1967 to 1968.

James joined the army in February 1965, aged 19, completing basic training at Kapooka near Wagga Wagga, and graduating from the training program ranked number one in his platoon.

During his time at Kapooka, James was encouraged to apply for Officer Cadet School.

of further officer training, James became a Platoon Commander to 7RAR, based at Puckapunyal.

In April 1967, James and 7RAR travelled to Vietnam to begin their tour of duty.

“We did a number of different operations; in those days they were called search and destroy missions,” said James.

One such operation involved the removal of cluster bomb units, planted through the Vietnamese jungle by the Viet Cong.

“They are about grenade size and are supposed to go off when pressure is applied, with ball bearings going everywhere. They were using them as mines. They would dig a hole, put the thing upside down in there with the pressure plate on the top,” said James.

“We found that they were mining around the area, once we discovered how they were doing it, we were able to pull them out of the

ground safely.

The engineers tested them and told us it would only take a ten-pound weight to set them off. The explosion would blow your foot off,” he said.

James was then involved in the now infamous Tet Offensive in 1968, a coordinated series of North Vietnamese attacks on more than 100 cities and outposts.

“There was an American base north of us called Bien Hoa, and the commander of that corp asked for two of our battalions to go up and provide a blocking force to troops coming from Cambodia.

I was one of the junior officers. The night of Tet, they opened up on everyone. Artillery and rockets and everything going on. They didn’t know that there were two battalions in their way. Eventually they were repulsed from Bien Hoa.” James left Vietnam in April 1968 after twelve months. Upon his return to Australia,

James continued his career with the military in a variety of roles, before retiring as a Major aged 43 to pursue a career as a civilian.

James keeps in contact with the remaining members of 7RAR, who meet for a reunion every three years in various venues around the country.

The Battalion are fondly known in military circles as ‘The Pigs.’

“7 RAR are known as the Pig Battalion.

The battalion was newly formed at the time,” said James.

“There was a big night had in the canteen at Puckapunyel. The next day the commanding officer did an inspection of the area and found it knee deep in bottles.

“He pulled everyone together and said, ‘Your nothing but a mob of pigs.’ Some clown up the back, who we have never identified, said ‘Oink, oink.’

“The rest is history and we are very proud of that name.”

Property rates make up just over 50% of Council’s income and help deliver services that range from roadworks and infrastructure improvements, to providing a library service and maintaining sports fields.

2020/21 is the final year of the 5% special rate variation approved by IPART (the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal).

Apart from this approved increase, specifically quarantined to improve the region’s transport network, most other charges remain the same including those

charges that apply to water rates.

There are no increases to waste charges, sewer charges, or water access charges.

Water usage charges remain static per kilolitre for the first step – to a set allowance based on your meter size – while water used above this allowance will increase by $0.20c per kilolitre.

“The two-step system is used to encourage the responsible use of water, and means customers using more water than the average will pay more,” Steve said.

“This is especially important in light of the severe drought conditions our region has experienced in recent times.”

Property-owners will have also recently received a land valuation from the NSW Valuer General’s Office, which comes into effect with the 2020/21 rates notice.

Land valuations cannot impact the total amount of rates Council can collect, but may influence how this total is distributed among property-owners.

For people who pay in full, the extension means payment falls due on 30 September.

The extension also applies to people paying by quarterly instalments, where the first instalment will fall due on 30 September.

In addition, there will be no interest charges on overdue amounts during the period 1 July 2020 – 31 December 2020.

“While our situation is not unique, we recognise that our community has been financially impacted by the pandemic,” explained Steve Embry, MidCoast Council’s Director of Corporate Services.

“Our aim is to provide relief where it is needed, and where we can, whether that’s by giving people a little longer to pay or by waiving interest on overdue amounts during the first 6 months.”

Retiree gives back to his community

By Ashley CHRYSLER 87-YEAR-OLD Gordon Rowe made the big move from Cowra to Palm Lake Resort in Tea Gardens in November 2016.

“I used to come fishing with our boating club to Port Stephens for a number of years, and thought it would be a nice place to retire,” he said.

Since making the move, Mr Rowe has made it a priority to give back to his new community.

“I saw a documentary about a young man who returned from Afghanistan who had severe head injuries, and how through rehabilitation he was able to regain some motor skills again,” said Mr Rowe.

“They had him open little doors with latches and put nuts on bolts and things like that.”

“Then I spoke to someone else and they said it was a thing called ‘fiddle boards’ which have activities for fine motor skills.”

Mr Rowe and other members of the village’s workshop group started making fiddle boards and have since donated some to Estia Health Tea Gardens, Peter Sinclair Gardens and Life Without Barriers.

“Jacinta Verde, another resident here at Palm Lake, works at Estia and it was through her that it all started,” Mr Rowe said.

“Some of the people there with dementia really benefit from it – it gives them something to do but also stimulates their mind and challenges them to do things that people would normally take for granted.”

Since 2017, the workshop group has been able to donate eight giant boxes of dominoes, fiddle boards, large noughts and crosses game boards and bird houses, to name a few.

Mr Rowe has also made a hobby out of

building model ships, of which he has donated several to organisations such as the RFS and

SMSFs account for 99.7% of all super funds in Australia and collectively hold 26% of the $2.9 trillion in super assets under management. There are 1.125 million Australians in nearly 600,000 SMSFs with an average fund balance of $1.3 million and a median fund balance of $720,000.

Recent data suggests that the number of SMSF registrations has been increasing and the growth in registrations over the past year is expected to continue due to the economic impacts of COVID 19, as some members choose to establish SMSFs to enable greater control of their retirement savings.

WITH the recurring rounds of storms, locals believed they were watching a losing battle at Jimmys Beach with the large five metre South East swell smashing the already eroded beach.

However as pictured, the excavator expertly operated by “Steve” worked hard and fast in the wet and windy conditions, distributing sand along exposed points.

MidCoast Council praised the work of

the contractors who safely continued to work throughout the East Coast lows.

The dredge also handled the swell and the Sand Transfer Station was pumping with only a small amount of sand lost.

The Council continues to monitor the area to continue to deliver more sand to renourish the popular beach.

The Australian Government is extending JobKeeper until 28 March 2021 and the temporary Coronavirus Supplement for those on income support until 31 December 2020, after which income support will continue.

MEETINGS are back on for the valued local Red Cross, with members meeting on 1 August, for the first time since COVID. Janet Baker informed NOTA, “During the COVID break, members with disaster training continued to provide strong support to bushfire victims.”

“Telephone calls enabled us to continue to provide victims access to regular counselling and social support services.”

“Many remain overwhelmed by tragic events, sharing their stories with the volunteers as they recover,” Ms Baker said.

The support services will continue for as long as required.

Further training in disaster relief will be on 5 September and volunteers are welcome.

The training improves the capability of the Red Cross members to provide much needed personal support to anyone adversely impacted by any type of emergency.

Janet also acknowledged the generous donations of Christmas Toys, advising, “The toys were packaged up and sent to children and their families living in refuges in and around Coffs Harbour. We also received a warm thank you letter.”

Sadly, some long-serving Red Cross members did not return and condolences to the Mowbray and the Sheldon families.

Ted Mowbray was a long-serving member and he will be missed.

Red Cross meetings are the fourth Monday of each month and new members are warmly welcomed.

Myall River Matters - Weekly region update

BIKE riding has always been popular along the mostly flat sea and riverside roads traversing the Myall Coast, providing a healthy change from those solitary winter walks.

Locals have noticed more bike riders on the roads and are urging all to ride safely, wear helmets and for drivers to be on the lookout and give way, especially in school transport hours, near local skateboard parks and BMX tracks.

Talking drivers, the

Pindimar / Tea Gardens and North Arm Cove Rural Fire Service were called to assist the occupants of two motor vehicles both of which ran off roads within a 24 hour timeframe.

Crews attended the two accidents, one at Nabiac and the other on the Myall Way, Tea Gardens.

Noel from the RFS stated, “Please people, slow down and pay attention. We do not want to meet you this way.”

Neither do the bike riders.

Rumours are swirling that the MidCoast Council is baulking at the additional

Public Facilities upgraded IN May the Federal Government announced key community infrastructure across the Port Stephens Council area would be supported as part of a $1.8 billion boost from the Federal Coalition Government.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said I’m pleased to announce the local projects to be funded in Port Stephens which include new public toilets for Longworth Park, Karuah.

Council will soon commence planning and design works for the space. The new amenities will continue the upgrades to Longworth Park which have included upgrades to the playground, BBQ and picnic

facilities.

“Karuah is a great village and the new toilets will be a great asset for both the local community and visitors,” Dr Gillespie said.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said there has been strong community support for Longworth Park and the upgrades that have taken place along the Karuah River front.

“Karuah is a great place to live, and also a wonderful stop-over for travellers. The upgrades to Longworth Park will make a real difference in attracting motorists to pull off the highway and spend some time and money in Karuah,” Cr Palmer said.

What a lovely gesture. I just love living in our town with such lovely people. Thanks Geoff, you’re a champ and it was a pleasure to meet you.”

ROY Day was an eighteenyear-old working in a Sydney machine shop when he was called up to join the RAAF during the Second World War. “I signed up on the 23rd January 1945,” said Roy. He had attempted to join three months prior, but being in a ‘protected industry,’ his boss had intervened to keep Roy at work.

“I got called up when I first turned 18 but the boss put a note in to say I was in a protected industry and that I couldn’t go,” said Roy. “Three months later the letter came again, and this time I said, ‘I am going,’ and me and my work mate walked out. “The boss was not happy about it, but he didn’t stop us.

“My mate joined the army and I joined the air force. A year and a half later when we were both discharged, we both turned up at the shop on the same bloody day to ask for our jobs back.”

Roy served most of his time in Western Australia as a Medical Orderly.

“I was posted to 17RSU, a repair and salvage unit. I was looking after the sick and injured.”

During his time with the

RAAF, Roy provided vital care to thousands of Australian servicemen and women.

Roy was travelling on a troop train crossing the Nullarbor Plain when he received the news the war had ended.

“After the war finished, for a while it was busier than during the war,” said Roy. “For about two months, we were getting back Australian prisoners of war who had been captured.

“A lot of them needed help. We never asked them what it had been like, locked up for four or five years in a German prison camp, you just didn’t ask questions and they wouldn’t have talked about it if you had.”

Roy describes his experience with the RAAF during World War Two as a ‘humbling’ one.

“It’s certainly something you don’t forget,” said Roy. “It’s hard to explain unless you have been there. You did things that you wouldn’t have thought you would be able to do at eighteen.”

Roy says that the experience during the war, whilst extremely difficult, had given him lifelong friendships.

BEES are the world’s most important pollinator of food crops, with research even suggesting that one third of the food we consume daily relies on pollination by bees and other insects, birds and bats.

Andrew O’Malley, a local qualified tradesman with a keen hobby in beekeeping, said that while the honey bee plays a key role in human wellbeing more generally, there are abnormally high death rates of colonies around the world.

“We need to do our part in being kind to the bees,” he

said.

“On the Myall Coast, bees have access to forests and coastal flowers which is essential for honey production and sustainability.”

“We can help support the bees by planting more flowers, using less pesticides and even leaving fresh water out in dry weather; with a cork or floating device for them to sit on.”

Mr O’Malley has been a beekeeper for four years, and recently decided to launch a ‘hive hosting’ program, which he has seen success in for other cities and suburbs.

“I really wanted to raise awareness of the importance

of bees, especially in our environment,” he said.

“We need safe spaces for the bees to live, forage and thrive, so that they can continue to do what they do best, which is pollinate and bring us some of the many things we consume daily, such as fruits, vegetables, and honey.”

There are many benefits to hive hosting, such as increased yields from fruit and vegetable crops, firsthand education on how it all works, and fresh honey come harvest time.

The Joys of Home Care Since joining the Home Care Nursing team as their Clinical Registered Nurse, there has been some challenges to face. Most of which has been related to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, despite this there has been many good news stories to report from our home care recipients. Whilst it has been a frustrating experience for people who are waiting a long time to receive a home care package, it has been a joy to see the many benefits these packages can provide.

For example, a consumer signed up with us as result of having memory loss and suffering co morbidities. “Max” had been on the waiting list for a home care package for nearly two years. He was accepted for a level three package and recently upgraded to a level four. Prior to our service Max was living a sedentary life, becoming more chair bound every day. On my first visit to Max’s home, the stress was evident on his wife’s face, being his only carer.

The benefit of being on a home care package is that it is totally client centred. Upon close listening and attuned to the problems being faced, together we were able to develop a care plan that started to address many of Max’s needs and the stresses that were being placed on his wife.

What was happening in this household probably reflects the problems of many in that they had limited outside support. In this case, prior to receiving the Home Care Package the couple were receiving assistance with weekly household cleaning but there was no continuity of care. This meant that each time a new worker arrived at their home the couple would have to explain the same instructions for cleaning and finding equipment, which would be multiple times a month.

Max and his wife were surprised that under the package they could have a home Physio and Occupational therapy (OT) review. These assessments were the key to tailoring the care to their individual needs. After the OT assessment safety equipment such as handrails and ramps were able to be installed. The new equipment provided not only falls risk management but peace of mind for our clients in so far as feeling safe in their own home.

The OT service went hand in hand with having a regular physiotherapist home on a weekly basis. Together both these services have enabled Max to feel safe, moving more freely around his home. Max is now more comfortable and confident to walk, and exercise regularly as directed by his physiotherapist. As a result, over the last couple of months, Max has made great strides in becoming less chair bound and less dependent on others to care for him.

Max stated ‘’I never thought 100 steps were possible again but now I can even go all the way to the front office of the village without stopping’’.

Whilst Max has shown a marked improvement in his mobility of late the carer stress on his wife is still evident. Fortunately, the recent increase in service to a level 4 package has allowed her to delegate some of the personal care responsibilities to the home care staff. This has been a significant decision for the couple given the years of independence and personal privacy they have enjoyed to date. Whilst it is a huge decision to relinquish the provision of personal care the various home care services give Max’s wife a break from the physical and emotional stress involved in providing all of Max’s requirements for daily living.

These examples follow the Aged Care Quality Standards 1-8. It may be a basic requirement to follow these standards however, it is essential that both clients and their carers are listened to. This enables HOME CARE providers to give quality care. The home care team and I receive great satisfaction when making a difference in helping the consumers of our service feel safe and well, living in their own home.

Our President, Leslie Falla, has recently led a series of lessons for those new to bridge as he has done in previous years. Undeterred by the restrictions of coronavirus, he has harnessed the power of the Internet and used Zoom and online bridge games to support the usual lessons and teaching notes. 24 students have participated, helped by a small group of mentors.

Students now have the opportunity to participate in the Club Bridge Base Online games and, using Zoom, review the hands, which have been uploaded to our website, with their mentor to

improve their play. Well done Leslie and his support team for continuing to develop our Club in these challenging times!

Interestingly, the Club has also gained some new members from out of the area – indeed, out of state! who want to continue playing club tournaments but do not have the opportunity to do so with their local club and have friends and contacts in our Club. All are welcome!

$3,000 for Rural Fire Mark Hartwell and Grahame Rowell from Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade were recently granted $3,000 as part of the Federal Government’s 2019-20 Volunteer Grants Program.

Dr David Gillespie, thanked all volunteer firefighters who gave their time to protect our communities, acknowledging that last season was a particularly tough time for many small communities.

"Every bushfire season our volunteer firies are called upon to defend homes and save lives" said Dr Gillespie.

"It's hard work and

it's unpaid, but their contribution is vital and this funding will go towards fuel costs ensuring our firies are not out of pocket."

Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston, said that volunteering is very much part of the Australian way of life.

“It has many social and economic benefits such as increased confidence,

reduced marginalisation and skill development.”

“The Grants support organisations whose volunteers assist communities and encourage the inclusion of vulnerable people in our society.”

Myall Coast Radio also received $6,000 which will be used towards sound equipment, and is expected to launch within the next few months.

Club Championship doesn’t disappoint FROM Page 16

It was a game that will be talked about in years to come and those that had the good fortune to watch it will know what it takes to win this blue-ribbon event.

The lead changes many times and just when one thought that there was a break occurring the other player pounced back.

The match was decided over 38 ends and at the 31st Greg had opened a 9 shot lead,3021, and needed one shot for the title.

Game, set, match we thought but it was not to be.

Jeff retaliated winning the next 6 ends to take the score to 30-29 in Greg’s favor.

The last end was memorable with Greg having two shots on the Jack and Jeff having 2 behind.

A shot onto the jack would have seen Jeff retain his title but his last bowl missed, and Greg became the Tea Gardens Bowling Club Singles Champion for 2020.

Congratulations to both players on a marvelous game played in the usual spirit of our Club.

Thanks to the marker, Club President, Noel Jackson and Ross Barry, the umpire for the game.

In other news: Nominations are open for the Club Championship Triples with the first round being played on Saturday 5 September.

A successful Annual General meeting was held on Sunday 16 August and I will report on this meeting next week.

Roll-ups are now permitted with some very sensible rules to follow to ensure the safety of all our players.

Bowlers should make themselves familiar with these requirements before commencing a roll-up session.

Dear David, It is definitely a challenge. I mean, most of us are sticking close to home and when we do go out it is like a budget version of a masquerade ball. They say one of the first things that people are attracted to is our smile, but it is a bit difficult when that smile is covered by three layers of cotton or a P95 mask complete with its warning label (an instant turnoff) or maybe one of those repurposed socks that are all the rage on Youtube but apparently not terribly effective for preventing virus transmission or getting a date.

The plus is it is a much more level playing field. We all look pretty similar at the moment in our iso-wear (obligatory black tights and tracksuit top) and face coverings. People will have to be attracted to each other on personality alone, not that there is much opportunity to discover that personality when we are standing on circles 1.5 metres apart.

Hugs and kisses and even handshakes are no go zones, and there is something distinctly unromantic about an elbow bump.

I suggest you join a mixed sports team. For some reason it is perfectly acceptable to grab people around the waist or hoist them up in the air by their shorts or stick your head near their buttocks as long as there is a rugby ball involved. Whether or not you will meet the woman of your dreams is questionable, but at least you will maintain some level of fitness which will be handy when life goes back to some semblance of normality.

TUESDAY 13th August: Despite the overcast, cold weather conditions there was a good turn up of bowlers.

Unfortunately, by the time the bowlers got on the green heavy rain fell and it looked like it might have set in.

Due to our present climate (Covid 19) a large number of bowlers decided it would be safer to head to the comforts of home.

Ten bowlers waited for the rain to cease and managed

a game of Triples and a game of Pairs, just bowled 14 ends before rain stopped play.

Results of these games were a win to Christine Fossey and Karen McPhie 17 v Ingrid Luck and Lorraine Murphy 4. Jean Glover, Judi Polak and Kayelene Pearson 17 v Lyn Nightingale, Dawn Jones and Lynda Richards 10.

This was a close game until the last 2 ends, only 1 shot difference on the 12th end then Kayelene's team scored a 4 then a 2. The winners on the day winning with the "highest margin" were Christine and Karen.

12 AUGUST: Another great winters day for bowling with 42 players presenting for the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples.

A big welcome back to Max Stephens after his knee surgery.

I was going to cut and paste the usual winners, but some new teams emerged which was nice to see.

The winners were decided on the morning games and on the grass, it was the team of Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Bill Heylbut who took the money with 13 points.

On the synthetic, also winning with 13 points, was the team of Graeme Watkins, Mark Nightingale and Keith Smith.

The winner of the Myall Bistro voucher was Stu Dorahy.

15 August: Rob Young, our bowls coordinator, must have a direct line to the rain Gods as not one round of the Club Championship events has been postponed so far this year despite repeated downpours.

And so, it was today when the premier event on our calendar, the Club Championship Singles was played in fine but very windy weather and in front of a large and knowledgeable gallery.

Greg Pearson and Jeff Baker are two of our finest players and they did not disappoint the gallery with a most amazing display of skill in exceedingly difficult windy conditions.
