that the current solar feed-in tariff rate of 5.57.2 c/kWh be increased to 11.6-14.6 c/kWh. Minister for Energy and Utilities, Don Harwin, said the benchmark feedin tariff will help customers negotiate a better deal from energy retailers.

“The tariff is not subsidised by other energy users so it won’t increase power prices,” Mr Harwin said.

“It will help deliver lower energy bills for NSW’s 350,000 solar households.”

If the new tariffs go ahead, it will be the first time that solar feed-in tariff rates have undergone a significant increase since the Solar Bonus Scheme closed to new applicants in 2011.

According to the CSIRO, around 35 percent of energy could come from rooftop solar by 2050.

“The solar panels have been great,” Gavin said.

“They need very little maintenance, just a bit of cleaning every now and then.”

The final tariff determination will be issued later in June.

RECENTLY the Probus Club of Hawks Nest & District embarked on two fantastic journeys, one for a three night stay in Narrabri and the second one on a day trip to historic Morpeth and Largs, both carefully coordinated by our Social Organiser, Peter Cameron.

The trip to Narrabri on day one toured us

National Park to view Sawn Rocks, a visit to the Artesian Baths in Moree, excursion through the Midkin Cotton Gin ending day three with a Country Music Theme Night with an early start on day four taking in Tamworth, the Rail Museum at Werris Creek and the Wallabadah First Fleet Park then back home to Tea Gardens.

Our trip for the month of May was to historic Morpeth which included

a commentary from one of our members who had grown up in the area and who shared some factual information as well as adding some “home truth” anecdotes for some fun along the way.

THE students of Tea Gardens Primary School are getting a new insight into those left fortunate while supporting a great cause.

The pupils have joined the ‘Recycle for Sight’ Australia project in conjunction with the Lions Club.

The project involves collecting old eyeglasses and sunglasses so they can be recycled to help people with vision problems in less fortunate countries.

There are collection baskets at the courtesy desk at Coles in Myall Quays Shopping Complex or you can drop off your old specs at the school office.

“Our student leaders are driving the initiative at school level and want to be part of helping improve the sight of people from poorer countries around the world.”

“It’s great how the local community have already rallied around to support this initiative,” Mark said.

The project runs until the end of June so there’s still plenty of time to get those ‘specs’ in.

Company planning is imperative. I recently saw a client of mine who was a director and shareholder in a very successful Hunter Valley company. Let’s call them Company Y. Many years ago, my client set up Company Y with his good friend and business partner. They were/are both directors and shareholders in Company Y. When Company Y was established a generic Company Constitution was produced on registration. The Company Constitution was not appropriate for the purposes of Company Y. Company Y did not have Shareholders Agreement prepared to set out the rights and obligations of the shareholders together with the operation of Company Y. After all, “Why would Company Y need this? We are mates!”

Many years later, tragically, my client was diagnosed with a devastating illness and the future of Company Y was thrown

into turmoil. The business partners and shareholders now have differing views as to how to proceed and there is no appropriate documentation setting out the rights and obligations of the parties.

Company Y is suspended in a state of unease and uncertainty. In times where my client should be living life to the fullest, they are now faced with having to deal with the affairs of Company Y in order to provide for their family when they are no longer here.

This heartbreaking situation could have been avoided if a little company planning was considered at the outset.

A wise person once said this to me when discussing Shareholders Agreements: “When at peace, plan for war.”

This has stuck with me and, I think, illustrates the importance of having a Shareholder Agreement for every company as soon as possible. You never know what is on the horizon.

Beyondblue Thankyou

By Margie TIERNEY DEPRESSION does not discriminate, as we were again reminded by the news earlier this month, that Rugby League Star Greg Inglis had checked himself into a mental health facility.

Statistics from beyondblue estimate that in any one year, more than a million Australians will suffer from depression.

Tea Gardens local Carol Nelson knows only too well how devastating the illness can be after her son-in-law committed suicide last year at just 39 years of age.

He left behind his wife and four young children.

But his passing has led to Carol taking action, becoming

involved with beyondblue to raise awareness and funding.

Recently Carol and husband John organised a barbecue at the Myall Quays Shopping Centre.

“I would like to say a big thankyou to Coles for their donation and my amazing helpers on the day,” Carol told News Of The Area.

“John and I would also like to thank Kris and John Mobbs, Lynette and Geoff Thorn, Colin Haigh and Fiona Mobbs for making yummy blue cakes to sell.”

“It was a great day raising $651.05 and a huge thanks goes to the locals who supported us,” Carole said.

MIDCOAST Council have deferred making a decision on the proposal to construct a Highway Service Centre on land adjacent to Bulahdelah Golf Club.

A Planning Proposal for the land to be re-zoned was lodged with Council last year by Hampton Property Development.

According to Council’s

website, following an independent assessment of the documentation, additional information now needs to be provided before the proposal can progress further.

This includes details on the impact that the proposed Highway Service Centre would have on local businesses and other

highway service towns, including Nabiac and Coolongolook.

A development application to construct a third service station at Coolongolook was lodged with MidCoast Council in February this year by PEP Consulting.

Owner of the Bulahdelah development project, Mr Peter Kampfner, said despite the existing competitive market, there is always room for expansion.

“There can be any number of service stations along the highway, but our development is different,” he said.

“We intend to develop a major Highway Service

Centre and to use it as a catalyst to build Bulahdelah.”

According to documents submitted to Council, the Service Centre proposal includes five diesel fueling bays, 12 petrol bowers, restaurants, children’s playground area, 90 car parking spaces and a picnic area, in addition to trucker facilities.

The proposed service centre is the first stage of a larger project that

includes housing and tourist accommodation.

Mr Kampfner said the economic growth of the town and promoting tourism continues to be a major focus of the project.

It is expected that the additional documentation required will be submitted to Council in the coming months.

RETIRED school teacher Angela King has turned her lifelong passion for hats into a trip down memory lane.

Angela and husband John were invited last week to the SKILLS morning at the Baptist Church in Tea Gardens to stage a hat parade for the residents of Peter Sinclair Gardens and Estia’s Aged Care Facility.

Angela had brought with her dozens of hats from her

Riding instruction, coaching, caring for horses and practicing competition skills are some of the many activities organised during the meets.

The young riders’ skills and confidence are improving each month and several members are now competing in competitions

Pony Club Coordinator, Alicia Madden, said the club is all about learning new skills and having fun.

“The kids just enjoy riding together,” she said.

“They are able to come here and make new friends and have a lot of fun together.”

The Pony Club was reestablished earlier this year and quickly attracted 15 young riders.

“The club used to be

big at one stage, but ceased about five years ago due to lack of members,” Alicia said.

“We are hoping that the club will just keep on growing and we can eventually get it back to like it once was.”

Alicia told News Of The Area, the club caters for all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced riders.

“Anyone from two to 25 years can join the club,” she said.

THE Salvation Army will be able to assist many people in need thanks to the Bulahdelah community who dug deep during last weekend’s Red Shield Appeal.

“The community were brilliant, they were very generous with their donations,” Lions Club member Helen Amendolia said.

“Every bit given will make a big difference to someone in need.”

In a typical week, The Salvation Army provides 100,000 meals, 2,000 beds for people experiencing homelessness, distributes up to 8,000 grocery vouchers and provides refuge for 500 people fleeing abuse.

HORDES of recreational boating enthusiasts were on deck at Bulahdelah Bowling Club last weekend to complete the theory component required for obtaining their boating licences.

The full day session was conducted by Roads and Maritime Services Boating Education Officer, Gavin Beck, and covered many topics including safety equipment, maintenance of

inflatable lifejackets, weather, communications, speed and night safety.

The large crowd also examined emergency situations such as person overboard, carbon monoxide, fires and hypothermia.

The day was an initiative of the Bulahdelah Fishing Club to assist members and locals get their boating licences.

“I learnt a fair bit and feel a lot more confident now about going out on the waters,” 13-year-old Dylan Smith from Hawks Nest said.

“I learnt about where to drive in the channels, about

directions and a bit more about boats.”

Having successfully passed the theory component, the participants now need to satisfy the practical experience requirements.

This involves using a logbook to show competent boat driving skills or by completing a practical boating training course.

Melissa said due to an overwhelming demand, a further theory course will be run locally on 18 June.

Roaring 20s Fundraiser

THEY stepped back in time at the recent Roaring 20s afternoon organised by the Lioness Club.

Flappers and Dapper Dans were in abundance at the ‘High Tea’ event at the Tea Gardens Hotel.

“It was great to see people, including the men,

dressed up in the Roaring 20s theme,” Lioness President Linda Allen said.

“The Trivia Quiz was on the same theme and had contestants scratching their heads trying to stimulate their memories.”

The ‘Old Bones Ukulele Group’ performed music from the era.

‘Port Stephens Jewellery’ displayed and discussed jewellery renovation, design and repairs.

He also donated $300 to the event.

“We managed to raise about $1,000 on the day and a donation for this amount will be made for Prostate Cancer Research,” Linda said.

AN idea planted years ago has finally come to fruition with the creation of planter boxes and seats on Myall Street in Tea Gardens.

“This was a particularly bare section of Myall Street that we wanted to soften,” President of the Progress Association, Trevor Jennings told News Of The Area. ‘’A lot of people come off the ferry and the women go into Ella’s Boutique and Black Possum Fabric Shop and you often see the men standing outside, twiddling their thumbs so that’s just one purpose.”

Funding for the project came from a grant, plus donations from the local Chamber of Commerce and the Hawks Nest Progress Association The ‘know-how’ and the wood was provided by the Tea Gardens Men’s Shed.

“We were only too pleased to do the work as it helps the community,” Men’s Shed member Rob Hughes said.

The Men’s Shed do lots of work around the community, often providing a service that tradesmen find too small like repairing chairs or checking out electrical appliances to

ensure they comply.

They do have a big plan on their books, to build a new Men’s Shed in the Industrial Estate.

Any help with fundraising or grant writing would be gratefully received.

The soil and fertiliser were donated by Woodwards Nursery.

Myall Chamber of Commerce President Jessica Harris said, “That’s why community groups are so important, you can’t do it on your own and get these things done and to have three community groups come together is a great achievement.”

By Daniel SAHYOUN BIANCA Clarke’s dream of becoming the first person in her family to study at University is one step closer, after being awarded a 2017 Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship valued at up to $20,000.

“To be selected for the scholarship amongst so many inspirational people is a great honour,” the Hawks Nest teen said.

“It gives me confidence that I can now successfully finish school and then go onto University.”

The scholarship program aims to boost the educational achievements and career aspirations of Year 9 girls with high potential who are facing challenging circumstances.

As part of the program, each of the recipients receive a laptop, Internet access, tutoring, a coach and assistance with covering the costs of school equipment.

“I am very grateful for the laptop because I can now do my homework and study at home rather than having to go to the library, and the tutoring is also really

helpful,” Bianca said.

With an interest in sustainable living, Bianca plans to study a degree in permaculture after completing her school education.

Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) Welfare Head Teacher, Mr Warren Jones, who nominated Bianca for the scholarship, said the dedicated Year 9 student is a

very worthy recipient.

“Bianca has a natural, kind nature and curiosity, she is respectful, considerate of others and also interested in many areas of education,” Mr Jones said.

A small delegation of family and BCS staff recently travelled to Sydney for the presentation ceremony.

“I was very pleased to see her up on stage at the historic Sydney Town Hall with the other scholarship recipients from public schools around the state,” Mr Jones told News Of The Area.

“The presentation evening itself was a fantastic display of the diversity and talent that lies within the public education system.”

Bianca said being selected for the scholarship has given her an opportunity which she may not have otherwise had.

“I encourage other students to make the most of every opportunity available to them, you never know what’s out there,” she said.

ONE of the most popular events on the Rotary Club’s Calendar is its annual Trivia Challenge Night.

Now in its 11th year, the trivia buffs enjoyed a new experience with the event held at the Catholic Parish

Centre instead of the usual Tea Gardens Country Club restaurant.

“Unfortunately, as the new restaurant lessees have changed their seating arrangements, it was not possible to organise enough seating for a trivia night in the format they use,” Organiser

DANE Certificate ‘Creator of Wonders’ has operated a magic theatre in Melbourne for the past five years, where he has created and shown magic to many people including at the World’s Longest Magic Show for the Guinness World Records with the Australian Institute of

Magic.

Dane will entertain at the Karuah RSL on Saturday 1 July at 7pm.

Entry is free.

Dane is touring Australia this year with a little magic show which will suspend your disbelief and take you to a world of wonders.

Long Weekend Reunion

By Margie TIERNEY LONG lost friendships and fond memories will be renewed at a ‘Back to Tea Gardens Hawks Nest’ Reunion this upcoming June long weekend.

The event has been three years in the planning and began when ex-residents Anne-Marie Barry and Robbie Hughes reconnected on Facebook.

“We decided that it might be nice to catch up with a few more friends so we started a Facebook page of our own and called it “Back to Tea Gardens Hawks Nest,” AnneMarie said.

“We reminisced for a while about old school friends, three digit phone numbers, the punt and the bridge opening.”

The idea for a reunion was born.

Their Facebook site now has more than 400 members.

“I posted out 200 invitations and emailed and Facebook invited another 400,” Anne-Marie told News Of The Area. ‘’The criteria was that you must have lived in Tea Gardens Hawks Nest area between 1950 and 1985 and be born before 1974.”

“We’ve got people coming from Queensland, Victoria and all over NSW.” “While we tried to contact as many as we could, there will be some who missed out and we do apologise.”

“This is not a school reunion,” Anne-Marie stressed.

“The weekend will start from 10am on Saturday June 10 with a meet and greet at the Hawks Nest Community Hall, a cuppa and a catch up with old friends and acquaintances.

“A gold coin donation would be appreciated to help cover our costs.”

Saturday continues with nibbles and a two course Spit Roast dinner followed by entertainment.

Bookings and prepayment is essential for this event as numbers are strictly limited.

You’ll need to be quick, bookings close May 31.

“I’m gobsmacked,” Chris said, having just recovered from a bout of infection.

Winter is no barrier to the Club’s dedication.

A large contingent from Myall Masters is heading to Yamba in early June to compete in one of the major events on the Country Masters Swim calendar.

“This event hosts the State of Origin Shootout Relay.”

While the Myall Masters Swimming Club is officially in winter recess, several swimmers head to Jimmys Beach just after seven in the morning to swim and walk every day to keep up their fitness levels.

How do I get a job like yours? You seem to have such an interesting role, helping members of the community and writing. I love writing as well, and I think I am quite intuitive.

Mrs AB, Medowie Dear Mrs AB, WELL, it’s quite simple really. First of all, you need to spend your entire life striving to get the very best marks in school, until you get to Year 10, at which point you should disregard everything that you have been ruthlessly working towards and instead go clubbing in Oxford Street (shave your head and wear a kimono for good measure. Although, that may be harder now that they have that annoying little photo ID requirement).

Then, instead of enrolling in the Bachelor of Communication Studies that you somehow got the marks for, go to Europe and pretend that the world is your croissant.

Forget that these are your formative years in terms of finding your life-long career, and hang out on the ski slopes and drink Schnapps.

Next, come home and start a relationship with the local equivalent of Hando from Romper Stomper.

Don’t be content to hang out with a bad boy, have his child as well.

Then, spend about 10 years in dead-end jobs such as shrink-wrapping pallets of health food products and working for perverts in the hospitality industry.

Finally, land a job finding jobs for people and, after many years in this satisfying career, end up redundant when the government changes guards (oh, the irony).

Go to university, right up to PhD level, and become so qualified that no one will employ you.

Drink copious quantities of ‘woe is me’ vodka and, with so much life experience and many qualifications, get a job as an Agony Aunt.

As that dear little meerkat says, “Simples”.

Unfortunately none of our teams made it through to the semi finals but we all enjoyed a great week of friendship and bowling. The team of Karen McPhie, Robyn Webster, Deyonne Page and Elizabeth Kelly managed to win 4 out of 6 games and gained 3rd spot in their section on one day of play.

Praise for Dementia Support Dear News Of The Area, I WOULD like to thank the community for their fantastic show of support during our Hunter Memory Walk & Jog event.

More than 1,400 people walked or ran with almost $40,000 so far been raised by participants, with all funds raised going towards

dementia support services in the Hunter region.

In the Myall Lakes, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Upper Hunter state electorates there is estimated to be 6,950 people living with dementia, which is expected to increase to an estimated 8,800 people by 2025 and 15,400 by 2056.

Looking forward to the next State Carnival in 2018 which will be held at the same venue.

Roos take on Maitland United Karuah Roos Rugby League

LAST Saturday the Roos travelled to Aberglasslyn to take on the newcomers to the competition Maitland United.

The game day sponsor was Karuah Quality Meats.

The Roos kicked off and within the first 15minutes of the game, newcomer to the Roos, Kane Chisholme, was in for Karuah and Sam Croese converted 6/0.

Michael Gough was next to score for the Roos 10/0.

Pennant Results Karuah RSL Bowls Club

THIS year, Karuah being a relatively smaller club, had only three men’s pennant teams, being one in the midweek competition played on Wednesdays in grade 5, and two teams in the weekend comp, one in grade 5 and another in grade 4.

Some larger clubs have two or three teams in every grade and in each comp!

Our Ladies had one team team playing in the Ladies pennant competition in grade 4.

In 2017, Karuah did not win a pennant.

That said, this year was far from a failure.

This year our midweek men’s team came second in their section to a team from Soldiers Point (a much larger

club) on count back (with 9 possible points available from each game) having finished on the same points!

Our weekend team in grade 5 also missed the finals but our grade 4 team topped their section and in the playoffs beat out other section winners to play in the Grand Final.

Unfortunately, although very competitive, they were beaten by Raymond Terrace (a very large club).

Our Ladies also won their section and in the finals finished an extremely close second, losing by only one shot to Lambton.

So, one of our men’s team came second on count back in their section of 10 teams, another won their section and came second in their entire division of 60 odd teams and our Ladies came

Myall River Juniors Rugby League Neil REYNOLDS MYALL River Juniors Rugby League is at the halfway mark of their 2017 season.

A disrupted start, with player movement, and team grading has been sorted.

The “Tea Gardens

Fencing” nines are now into their third year as a combination, and continue to improve. Logue White, Sam Alchin and Coby Bates have been strong. Jack Nolan, Kobi Wells, and Lewis Smith’s games are consistent.

Toby and Darcy Wilton, along with Seth Rawlings, Korban Paterson, Boston Marchant, Darcy Ellicott round out a strong squad.

24 May There were 6 games of Triples and 1 game of Fours. The winners were decided by 20 points for a win plus ends won.

A strong team of Lance Atkins, Pip Sullivan and Greg Pearson won the money from Darryl Whitton, (visitor), Geoff Page and Max Stephens.

26 May I am amazed that this Friday Open Pairs event only attracts small fields because it really is a great format and deserving of more participants.

The lowest winning margin determined the winners and they were; Bill Moon and Bill Whalan.

They won on the last end of their match.

Runners-up were a Triples team of Gary Wynne, Lily Smith and Col Saillard.

The Jackpot was not won and will total $260.00 when the Friday Jackpot Open Pairs continues on 9th June.

27 May Members were joined

by bowlers from the East Maitland Travelling Bowlers Club today in a game of Triples.

Players occupied the grass green with one game overflowing onto the synthetic.

The overall winners for the day were the team of Denis Kerr, Barry Lynch and Pip Sullivan.

In first round matches for the Club Major Singles Championships, played on Friday and today the results were as follows:Luke Gliwa defeated Ron Webster 31-23 Jeff Baker won over Paul Syron 31-25.

Steve Pell had too much experience for “rookie” Ken Devlin, winning 31-18.

Similarly Sean Mearrick had too many aces up his sleeve, defeating Ross Barry 31-9.

Col Amos had a great game against Greg Pearson but went down 24-31.

Peter Gurney should feel very satisfied with his performance against defending champion, Richard Lee. Richard won the game 31-21.

The Karuah Ladies team that came runners up in the Ladies Pennant.

runner up in their division, effectively coming in second from 36 teams.

No pennant this year, but Karuah, a very small club, is extremely proud of its results,

both men and women’s teams.

It’s a credit to the selectors, and the players and reserves, if these teams can improve just a little bit next year, by jingo, look out!

Steve Jones was too consistent in his match against Doug Andrews winning 31-17.

28 May The Sunday bowlers had a lovely morning with the visiting bowlers from East Maitland.

There was a great contingent of 26 local bowlers matching a like number from East Maitland.

Thanks to the two cooks, Barry Goode and Ron Webster and to Keith Smith for assisting with the cards.

Many East Maitland bowlers stayed on to watch the action during the quarter finals of the Club Major Singles Championship.

There was some wonderful bowls played in ideal conditions.

Jeff Baker was in scintillating form in his match against Greg Pearson.

It was anyone’s game at the 30th end, but jeff gradually moved away clinching the game 31-24 after 36 ends.

Similarly the match between Sean Mearrick and Richard Lee was all quality.

It was a replay of the 2016 final but this time Sean held on to win a wonderful game 31-25.

Steve Pell made his way into the semi-finals next week with a convincing win over rookie Luke Gliwa.

It was a fine effort from Luke finally going down 17-

31.

Nelson Bay saw Sam Alchin, Logue White, and Kobi Wells score 2 tries each. Coby Bates and Jack Nolan scored one each.

The “Tea Gardens Masonic Centre” 14’s continued to build a campaign. A 3210 win against Nelson Bay during the Hawks super Saturday fixture last week, was maintained in their 5014 win on the road trip to Merriwa in round seven.

Dylan Long starred with 4 tries. Paddy Nickle scored three, Lachlan Callcott crossed for one, and Bailey

Middleton made it try time, two weeks in a row in a strong effort. Zac Watt and Nathan Katz shared the goal kicking with three conversions each. Sam Hyde showed back up ability with one between the sticks.

The “Tea Gardens Country Club” 16’s have had mixed results in the first round, having to form new combinations, after player movement in their premiership defence.

DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL - DA 291/2017 The Council of MidCoast has received a development application from Tattersall Lander Pty Limited seeking consent for an Earth Acoustic Mound on Lot 100 DP 1047534, 182 Myall Way, Tea Gardens (DA 291/2017).

Gibber to Gibber Tea Gardens Country Club Fishing Club

THE annual Gibber to Gibber Fishing competition took place on the beach between Hawks Nest Golf Club and the Big Gibber on 19–21 May. It was hotly contested by our three local clubs: Bulahdelah FC, Hawks Nest GC SC and Tea Gardens CC FC (hosts).

The forecast was for nasty weather, however after Friday night, we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather.

beach all weekend, varied success by all clubs.

Quite an assortment of fish were weighed-in: bream, flathead, whiting, drummer (secret fish), tailor and salmon.

The competition came to a conclusion on Sunday morning at Mungo Brush Rotunda with the weigh-in, competitors and families barbeque and raffles.

All who attended had a great time and there were heaps of “Fishy” stories told.

The winners were Bill Thrift-TGCCFC Individual & Men’s winner. Sue StewartDempsey-TGCCFC Ladies

winner, Melissa SmithBulahdelah FC Ladies runner-up, Daisy WheatonHNGCSC Sub Jnr winner, Saxon Rapley-HNGCSC Sub Jnr runner-up and Secret fish won by Jamie-HNGCSC, which was the one and only drummer weighed-in.

This competition was closely contested by all clubs and Tea Gardens Country Club Fishing Club were the winners, Hawks Nest 2nd & Bulahdelah 3rd, for 2017.

Looking forward to next year’s comp, to be hosted by HNGCSC.
