Hand Hygiene Tips: There are things we can do and it is normal to be a bit worried but keep that worry under control and do the sensible stuff; clean your hands lots and have access to alcohol hand rubs getting both surfaces of your hands and in between the fingers and that gives you the confidence that your hands are clean. Hands are the vector for this virus if we catch this virus it is from our hands by rubbing our hands into our eyes and around our face. We have to all start being conscious of our hand to face contact.

You have control of that and you can stop yourself from getting the virus by having clean hands and not touching your face and eyes. That is much more important than the droplet spread that everyone tends to focus on. Extra procedures come into play if you are around a known infected person.

How long can COVID-19 live on surfaces?

For most furniture etc a ”little while” but if you sneezed onto a pavement in sunlight it would not last at all because Ultra violet light kills the virus, however in a “perfect condition.” probably up to 2 days. The good news is that the virus is easily killed by what we use, alcohol wipes, sanitisers, disinfectant and bleach. Key is to sanitise surfaces regularly.

What precautions can you take to protect yourself from COVID-19 or any virus?

Covid 19 is transmitted by contact and droplet. Normal precautions for the flu are standard and should be implemented by everyone, particularly as we are entering the flu season. Practise good hygiene and cleanliness and sanitisation of common surfaces. Sneezing and coughing is a normal defence mechanism and cannot be stopped.

It is however extremely important to carry out those actions appropriately. I.e. into tissues, or fold of elbow. If you feel a change in your circumstance and it is not an allergic reaction stay away from work and phone your doctor. We like to soldier on but if we have a fever and headache we should not be going to work. It is important to separate when we are worried and think we have symptoms from when we actually have symptoms.

Who should be tested for Covid 19?

One of the risks in this situation is the “worried” well. If everyone came to get tested we would not be able to look after the heart attacks etc that an emergency department is meant to look after. So the Health Services wants to identify contacts, (whether they are close contacts or casual) If you have a 15min of face to face contact with someone who goes onto be covid positive, you are a close contact. Public Health will

be chasing those individuals. They will be on a list and they will be followed up. Contacts outside of that get much more diffuse and much less likely that there will be a problem.

Public Health tries to identify that close contact group and follow it up rigorously.

The problem is that people not in that close contact group think they should be followed up and strains resources and diverts efforts from those who really need follow up. The fact that you worked on a site where a covid 19 affected person also works, is not a risk factor. You need to have a specific risk factor to be tested.

Do you develop resistance after recovering from Covid 19?

Scientists believe so. That is the way every other virus related to this virus works but the research on this is still underway.

What does self-isolation mean?

It means you take yourself out of the community and you stay at home in isolation. You need to have family or friends or home deliveries of foods and articles.

If you need to be in contact with someone you must put on a surgical mask Ministry of health will provide isolation kits and instructions to selfisolators. Having loved one sin the home with you is not a problem provided you carry out the hygiene and social distance procedures. Ie need to sleep in a separate room. It is not self-isolate and go to the shops or concerts etc. it is go home and stay home for the 14 days.

I prefer being behind the camera any day.”

Local publican and keen photographer, Ben Hanson, also dropped in to enjoy the display and share some photography tips.

He is a keen regular to the gallery and showcases a wonderful range of local art at the Tea Gardens Hotel.

All fundraising from the Hawks Nest Gallery goes to research into Duchenne syndrome, a form of muscular dystrophy.

The genetic disorder adversely affects children with serious muscle loss and a shortened life expectancy.

The Hawks Nest Gallery is open to all on Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Submissions by local artists are always welcome.

Market Policy across the region MIDCOAST Council continues to roll out its new Market Policy across the region with the Great Lakes being the current area of focus.

The new policy provides a contemporary and consistent approach to managing markets across the MidCoast and applies to markets held on Council owned or controlled land.

The application round to operate or coordinate markets in the Great Lakes, will be open between Monday 30 March and Friday 1 May 2020.

The process includes an online form to be completed along with a set of three documents, to accompany the application. Application forms and guidelines can be found on Council's website midcoast.nsw.gov.au/Council/ Community/Markets.

Aboriginal Action Plan

MIDCOAST Council is currently working on an Aboriginal Action Plan to embed their commitment to strengthening connections with the wider MidCoast Aboriginal community.

Currently in its early stages, Council is seeking feedback from the community via a survey on their website, to help form a better understanding of the way services are provided across the region and to better identify the needs of the local Aboriginal community.

From language and resources to employment opportunities and education, the survey will provide a snapshot of the areas that need improvement locally.

Once the survey results are collated, the team will then be conducting focus groups in April/May to further discuss the feedback provided via the survey.

A person’s principal place of residence is usually exempt from payment of land tax.

The exemption is available in respect of one property only and applies regardless of the size or value of the land. To be eligible, the owner must have continuously used and occupied the property solely for residential purposes prior to the taxing date. When someone dies, their principal place of residence will continue to be exempt from land tax for two years from the date of death unless the ownership of a property is transferred to a third party (not being the executor or a beneficiary of the estate).

This effectively means that if the property is sold within the two year period, then the purchaser is only entitled to an exemption for land tax if he or she intends to use the property as their principal place of residence.

The rules provide that if someone continues to live at

the property (after the owner dies), then it continues to be exempt from land tax if the occupant is permitted to reside at the property under the terms of the Will of the deceased or if the occupant is not a tenant but occupied the property at the time of death of the owner and has been given permission by the executor to continue living at the property.

Presently the land tax threshold is $734,000.00.

Unpaid land tax is a charge on the property in respect of which it is levied. Therefore when acquiring a property, it is important to obtain a clearance certificate from Revenue NSW as subsequent owners can become responsible for payment of land tax (assessed but unpaid) for periods of time prior to their ownership of the property.

From my observations the original Anasazi grouping were an amazing collection of successful inhabitants whose achievements & structures are clearly seen today. Some 700+ years have passed since they disappeared.

Progress Report

By Gordon GRAINGER TEA Gardens Hawks Nest Progress Association met on Monday 9th March and was well attended by 35 visitors.

No doubt an agenda item regarding the Hawks Nest Caravan development was to be the main topic of discussion, however before reporting on that, I would like to bring to community attention, a service which is available to all residents in our twin towns and Karuah. That service is the Clinic Bus, manned, serviced and costed through volunteers and donations, ready to transport patients and partners to medical appointments in Newcastle and surrounds.

I recently had cause to use the service and found them to be prompt, reliable and free if one does not have the readies. Best put their contact number in your important book. It is 0403 657 195.

The proposed development for 220 home sites along the western side of Mungo Brush Road has been a matter of concern among a number of residents. Understandably so, when the DA application contains the wording “caravan sites” and “moveable homes” and apparently within a Koala corridor.

As a Councillor, Len Roberts was unable to make comment, however committee

member, Rick Wraight gave an impartial PowerPoint presentation providing the audience with the facts. It was well received by all who applauded his effort.

This DA will close on the 23rd March and should any residents have a genuine reason for rejection or approval, they are urged to do so through the Council website. Before doing so, however, they are urged to Google Mid Coast Council website, navigate to “Have your say—development applications” and reach the link to the caravan park. There is a huge amount of information which shows the site was cleared of trees a number of years ago and the housing is 2 to 3 bedrooms at more affordable cost. Quite different to the majority of offerings on social media.

The meeting then discussed other matters of interest to the community, including the following. · The proposed hydrotherapy pool will not proceed following the consultant report and the Assn. will pursue the existing pool needs upgrading and provide a longer period of use. It is suggested a pool committee be appointed to pilot these upgrades. Council is also in discussion with developers to include a heated pool for the general community in their proposals. · The whole community

is outraged by the recent addition to the Police station and the absolute lack of empathy to the heritage values. It has been mentioned in State Parliament and we will report on outcomes. · Our local Lions Club will welcome participation in more local projects and can be contacted by emailing teagardensclub@gmail. com · The PA is hosting a community meeting on 30th March at the Baptist Church 7pm. The subject is EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, of concern to this community and will be addressed by Agencies to provide emergency information on a number of potential issues including fire, floods etc. All are invited to attend. · The PA recently issued a survey questionnaire to the public asking for community input on a number of issues they may consider improvements to our future. If not already done so, please complete in order results can be compiled. · Myall Coast Radio is now incorporated and a site will shortly be finalised. A website will be running in near future and community groups will be approached to explain the organisation and seek funding for the project. This is an exciting move forward for our towns and will bring up to date information, as well as a benefit to our commercial business houses.

The next meeting will be held Monday 13th April at the Uniting Church Tea Gardens at 7pm. All will be welcomed.

How concerned should I be about Coronavirus? I’m young and healthy, but it is all anyone is talking about at the moment.

AS I write this I have just finished reading that Australia’s chief medical officer has not discounted options such as lock downs in major cities. While this may seem extreme, when you look at some of the madness that has inflicted our nation recently, harsh times may call for harsh measures.

Take the humble toilet roll. Never has such a seemingly innocent item been put so far out of proportion in terms of its value. Aussies are going absolutely berserk over the stuff. Meanwhile my local farmgrown fruit and veggie stall had just one customer yesterday afternoon – me. The herd mentality is frightening because it is completely illogical, and so steps need to be put in place to protect the rest of us.

The other problem I have observed is the callous indifference of people towards others in more alarming ways. I think many of us have seen the video of a woman openly coughing in front of a man who dared to suggest she cover her mouth. I just had the same thing happen in my home.

A man I don’t know, who had known me for 10 minutes, coughed without covering his mouth at my breakfast bar as he was saying Corona wasn’t an issue for ‘people like me’. The thing is, how does he know, from a cursory glance, what my health is like? How do any of us know whose health is compromised in some way in our communities? Or who goes home to the sick or the elderly – those four percenters who seem to have been classified, if you are to believe the media – as collateral damage.

So it is great, Mr SL, that you are young and healthy, but I do think we all need to show consideration for those who may not be so lucky Carpe diem, Jasminda.

IT comes as no surprise to many, that with the spread of the Virus, travel is not as high a priority, as 'dunny' paper.

Neither it seems, is a decent cop shop, in Karuah or Tea Gardens.

I have invited my sister and her husband, a retired Police Officer, to come and have a look at what $2 million dollars buys.

The suggestion that he would be ROFLMFAO (meaning laugh hysterically), is not an unreasonable consideration, in my opinion, and I won't be sitting in the car with him.

Can't wait to see what $1.5 million buys elsewhere.

WE’VE embraced all things American and the Tiny House movement is no exception! It’s definitely increasing in popularity across all market segments with manufacturers springing up nationwide; several in NSW. As housing affordability bites, the popularity of this movement increases exponentially. Big houses consume big energy and expel big waste so the movement also responds to environmental issues as we try to reduce our footprint. Tiny Houses assist young people gain a property market foothold and if on wheels on existing properties present excellent market entry options. Downsizers and those seeking a simpler lifestyle are becoming devotees and of course investors/B&B operators are reaping the benefits of holiday/rental income.

Overall, the benefits of this movement outweigh any negatives - more people in the housing market, greater output in the building industry and an increase in sales of vacant land.

While Tiny Houses are becoming increasingly sophisticated, they aren’t for everyone, regardless of whether the family is small or big. I can’t see them superseding traditional housing any time soon but they have an increasingly important role to play in the housing market, our efforts to downsize our ‘stuff’ and reduce our environmental footprint.

Footy theme with Bowls players Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

By The JAFFA 11 MARCH: To welcome the new football season, Nominated Triples today took on a football theme with players wearing their favorite club strip.

The football may now be “off” for spectators, but the bowls was on definitely “on” for 60 players attending today.

The winners today on the grass were: Bob Weir, Col Fossey and Henk Faber with 13 points on a 3-way countback, and on the synthetic, Laurie Welsh, Graham Uff and Daryl Martin managed a win with 12 points.

The lucky losers were: Glen Reinhardt, Graham Reynolds and Mark Nightingale 14 March: Round 3 of the Newcastle District Pennant season was played today in some very ordinary weather.

Grade 4 played Carrington at home and managed a clean sweep of their match with all teams having comfortable wins.

The Grade 4 side winning 68-44.

Grade 6 had a bye and the Grade 7 (1) side travelled to Soldiers Point.

At that venue, the Dave Benson four smashed their opposition 33-17 and the Doug Naylor team won 2017 to set up an overall win by 9 shots 66-57. Great effort!

The Garde 7 (2) side travelled down to Alder Park but before a shot was played the synthetic green became submerged in water.

With conditions deteriorating by the minute the game was called off.

Next week, Grade 4 are away at Valentine, Grade 6 are also away at Redhead, Grade 7 (1) are at home to Cardiff and Grade 7 (2) are home to East Maitland.

TUESDAY 10th March: Social bowls played plus Round 3 of the Pennant games, Pennant news first. Our Grade 4 Blue team had a home game against Merewether. An amazing result here as both teams drew, Merewether and Tea Gardens Blue advancing by 2.5 points each.

Grade 4 Yellow bowled at Adamstown one team having a loss and the other just winning by 2 shots, unfortunately not enough points to cover the difference in scores, one point added to their tally. Our Grade 2 Pennant team also had a home game against Kotara, a win and a loss. Enough shots scored by our winning team to add 1 point, Kotara 4. Home Competition 'turn around Pairs", a good win to Dawn Jones and Dorothy Thompson 18 v Wendy Jones and Liv Everingham 8. Jill McBride and Irene Roberts 13 v Pam Gilchrist 12.

Thursday 12th March: Home games for our Grade 4 sides (Blue & Yellow). The

Blues bowled well defeating the side from Adamstown, 5points gained. Total score on the Master Board 8.5 presently in 4th spot in their section. The Yellows recorded a win and a loss with the winning team making up the deficit, 4 points awarded. This puts them on 9 points, 3rd in the section. Our Grade 2 ladies travelled to Soldiers Point, once a gain one win one loss, another point for them, they are currently in 3rd position in their section. The Grade 2 Pennant Season will be completed in just 2 more games. They will be at home on the 17th March and their last game on the 19th March at Kotara will be the last till the Post Sectional Finals.  The at Home Competition was a game  of Triples Dorothy Thompson, Marie Reinhard and Pam Gilchrist defeating Ann Remment, Bev Dunn and Jill McBride 15 v 4.  Both Grade 4 Pennant Teams will be   bowling at home on Thursday 19th and  Tuesday 24th March, spectators  welcome. The   Grade 4 Pennant Season continues till the 2nd  April.

MYALL Masters Swimming Club recently sent a team of determined and enthusiastic swimmers to Cessnock for a long course swim meet.

The participation of Myall Masters at Cessnock Carnival has been a long tradition with the Club’s first ever attendance being in February 2005.

Events ranged from 50m to 1500m with the longer events commencing at 8 am. Linda Stubbs swam in the 800 m, Sharon Taylor and Christine Sefton in the 400m freestyle events showing that our females have more endurance than the men. The three swimmers were pleased with their first competitive swim for 2020.

Sharon, our ‘’Iron woman’’ who excels in medley swimming, showed her versatility in all four strokes.

Team members swam their favourite strokes and distances. Steve Rees and Trev Shorten controlled the first lap of the 100m freestyle and came home
