“Despite conducting membership drives, there has been no one to take up the challenge and join what has been an incredibly successful Service organisation.

“Since being chartered in 2003, the Club has received wonderful support from all of the Myall Coast Community and in return has put back over $250,000 into the many organisations that, in turn, serve that Community.”

The Club’s Youth Programs and their involvement with the four schools in the catchment area, have provided a valuable

“This isn’t just for the Rugby League and Cricket Clubs — it’s an important facility for the entire community of Karuah.

“It’s fantastic that everyone has worked together — 2 levels of Government, Cricket NSW and the community — to make this project possible and I can’t wait to see the end result,” he said.

This project is being funded by Port Stephens Council ($750,000), the Australian Government’s Move It Aus fund ($500,000) and the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund ($50,000).

Proceeds from the Raffle are being distributed as follows: $8,000 to the Drought Relief Appeal through the network of Rotary Clubs; $2,000 to the Bush Fire Appeal through St Vincent de Paul; $1,000 to the RSL Defence Care Suicide Prevention Appeal; And to support for our local Community organisations.

District Police Engagement meeting

By Sandra CLARK IN the Boardroom at Hawks Nest Bowling Club Wednesday 11 December, the Annual District Police Engagement meeting was held, attracting around 30 interested residents.

The Port Stephens Hunter Police District Inspector Tony Townsend began the meeting by introducing five local Police in attendance; Sergeant Paul Doherty Sector Supervisor, Senior Constable Trent Moffat Lock up keeper Tea Gardens, Senior Constable Ben Johnson Second Officer Tea Gardens ,Constable Ryan Parke Lock up keeper Karuah and Senior Constable Alison Stewart Crime Prevention Officer.

Inspector Townsend thanked residents for taking time to attend the meeting.

The Inspector reported local crime statistics for Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens in relation to the policing district.

January until the end of November 2019

there were 27 Break and Enters in Hawks Nest and eleven in Tea Gardens. One car was stolen in Hawks Nest and seven in Tea Gardens representing 1.6 per cent of the total policing district.

Inspector Tony Townsend said,” We are aware of a spike in Break and Enter figures this year, policing requires evidence, based beyond reasonable doubt, so it is important to report suspicious activity to Police.”

With information supplied, even when done anonymously, this can then be mapped and any patterns emerging can lead to proactive policing reducing crime in an area, call 131 444 for non-emergency calls.

“Domestic violence is generally believed to be an under reported crime,” said Inspector Townsend.

In Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens seven people were charged with breaching Domestic Violence orders.

Inspector Townsend said, “These are often difficult situations which can involve children.”

Overall these areas are relatively safe

zones in which to live.

Residents then asked questions pertaining to such issues as reporting of antisocial behaviour, suspect property damage and response times from when a call is made to Police and having them actually arrive.

Inspector Townsend took all of the comments and issues on board and will discuss with Officers at the next meeting in Raymond Terrace.

For any life-threatening event or fears for safety ring 000 calls are prioritised and despatched.

Police staff are required to appear in court cases, undertake training, are entitled to holiday breaks and have a family life, work is done within allocated resources.

22 January 2020 will see a sod turning ceremony to be held in Tea Gardens commemorating the upgrade of Tea Gardens Police Station.

The meeting finished on a lighter note with one local resident asking Inspector Townsend to ensure “Our Pelican” outside the Station in handcuffs, remains in situ.

Families often do not think about legal issues when they make arrangements between themselves. Even if they do, the prospect of legal fees puts them off. In a case heard in the Supreme Court earlier this year (Spink v Flourentzou [2019] NSWSC 256) a mother provided money to her daughter and son-in-law (“family”) when they bought a home. The mother’s expectation was that she could live with her family for the rest of her life.

However, the relationship broke down and the mother was left homeless and on the waiting list for public housing. The family alleged that the money provided by the mother was a gift. The mother was forced to take legal action against her

family arguing that it would be “unconscionable” for them to keep her money.

In the absence of a legal agreement, the Judge had to hear a lot of evidence and untangle the intentions of the parties from the evidence. This process took several days. He found that the mother did not intend to be on the legal title. As a result he ordered “minimum equity” ie that she receive back the money she put into the home. He was not prepared to give her any percentage of the increased value of the home. So, after a lot of heartache, the mother did recover some money but it would have been a whole lot less expensive and easier if she had been able to rely on a legal agreement.

WITH the pressing need to hit water usage reduction targets during level 4 severe water restrictions, smaller towns such as Gloucester, Stroud, Bulahdelah and Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest are showing Manning and Great Lakes residents the way.

MidCoast Council's Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Mr Rob Scott says further reductions in water use are critical, to ensure plans to supplement the water supply and avoid level 5 emergency restrictions.

“The response from small towns such as Gloucester, Stroud, Bulahdelah and Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest has been encouraging, with seven-day average water usage figures at or below their target levels,” Mr Scott said.

“However, Manning and Great Lakes residents have some work to do - only meeting the target on average two days every week.”

Council is updating the daily usage figures on its website at midcoast.nsw. gov.au/watertracker, so residents can keep track.

Dolphins' Christmas Carols

News Of The Area

By Sandra CLARK JOY To The World in the form of wonderfully sung Christmas Carols which filled the Hawks Nest Community Hall Friday morning 6 December.

Meeting there and in synchronised singing were members of a local social group named “The Dolphins.”

Dana Rederis told News Of The Area, “The Dolphins Group meet on a Friday and is one part of the MidCoast Council’s Assist program. We meet here at the hall and also go on outings. Services are provided in partnership with the Australian Government and our staff also work alongside wonderful volunteers.”

The Dolphins provides an opportunity for conversation and companionship over morning tea and lunch with the support of skilled staff and volunteers. The group is for men and women who would like to access social activities. Services include group activities including meals, group outings including men’s and ladies’ days, artbased activities, movement and cognitive stimulation activities.

By Ann SCULLY GENERAL Manager of Tea Gardens Country Club, Warren Gooley, has announced that the planned fireworks display generally associated with the Club’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, will not go ahead this year.

Mr Gooley told News Of The Area, “Although regrettable, the Board felt it was the only responsible course of action to take considering the current situation with fires still burning along the Eastern Seaboard with no relief in sight in the form of rain before the end of the month.

“The Club’s celebration will still go

ahead with all the usual favourites including Face Painting, Giant Slide, Jumping Castle, roving Clown and Juggler, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Preschool Glow products fundraiser and Myall Junior Rugby League BBQ. “We hope that people will still come along and bring the kids to what has always been a great family night as we will be showing the Sydney fireworks on the big screen and Newcastle Band, ‘The V Dubs’ will be rocking in the New Year.”

Country Club President, Terry Munright, advised Pindimar/ Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade Captain David Bright of the decision

Mr Munright also advised that in the New Year, the Club would be hosting a lunch or dinner for all active local RFS members as a show of appreciation for their courageous hard work, particularly over the last couple of months.

Tea Gardens Country Club will be closed on Christmas Day to allow all employees to enjoy Christmas with their families and loved ones and the Myall Bistro will be closed 24 and 25 December.

He always has one pant leg tucked into his boot, his hands are quite soft and pink and he frequently gets parsley stuck between his front teeth when he eats tuna salad.

You, Miss KL, you are possibly the only bit of joy in Roger’s mundane accounting job where he has to insert mind-numbingly boring data into endless columns while he considers the meaninglessness of it all in a country that not only hasn’t reached its election winning surplus figure estimates, but has a Net debt projection of $392.3 billion for the 2019-20 financial year. Roger is troubled.

And then there’s Hugh. You won’t have to worry about feeling uncomfortable next year, Miss KL, because Roger is so distressed by your reaction to the pickup line he’d been practising in his bathroom mirror for weeks that he’s now busily applying for a new job on Seek, just so he never has to see you again. And when he’s gone, you might appreciate that he’s the one who made sure you got paid, the one who corrected your travel sheets, and the one who sweated over asset, liability and capital account entries while Hugh took clients on long lunches and talked about himself. Progress Report

By Gordon GRAINGER THE Progress Association (PA) held its last meeting of 2019 last Monday and managed to combine a Committee meeting, a presentation by Rudy Jacobs on the forthcoming Art Expo and the Annual General Meeting finishing with festive nibbles and drinks.

The meeting was addressed by Rudy Jacobs, representing the Myall Community Arts and Crafts Centre, who are preparing a major art expo to be held in January. Our community is gifted with a large pool of very talented artists living in the area and Rudy’s group will be showcasing their work at Galleries in the Gardens, Community Arts and Craft Centre in Tea Gardens and Louise Richards in Hawks Nest between 10—12 incl. January 2020.

Rudy has arranged for at least 19 businesses located in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, to provide discounts and giveaways to visitors to the Galleries.

The PA was pleased to assist by funding a display banner to be erected on Myall Way.

Social bowls played on Tuesday 10th December, 2 games of Triples 18 ends and a game of Fours, 16 ends, Sheila Rattray playing "swinger lead". On Rink 2, 16th end 17 all, the winning team of Francis Betar, Jill McBride and Lynne Green improved their score by 2 on the next 2 ends defeating Bev Rhodes, Lynda Richards and Deyonne Page 19 v 17. A big win for Bette Saillard, Dawn Jones and Dale Winter 26 v Ingrid Luck, Irene Roberts and Karen Green 10. The score on the 13th end in the match between Sheila Rattray, Jeanette Emmett, Dot Dallas and Lorraine Murphy v Sheila, Leona Clissold, Jean Glover and Karen McPhie was 13 all. The next 3 ends eventuated in Lorraine's team gaining 7 shots, winning 20 v 13. Congratulations to Francis, Jill and Lynne winners on the day, winning with the lowest margin. Double win for Francis taking home the raffle prize, a voucher to the Myall Bistro & Café. Thursday 12th December was our "Break Up/ Secretary v President Day. Brief reports were received from the various community groups and we can advise that the Chamber of Commerce will host a meeting to appoint a working committee for our local radio station MYC FM 87.80. This is an exciting project of great benefit to both community and business houses in our area.

The hugely successful U3A will be holding their AGM in the coming week and will no doubt continue their success as the enrolment day is 13 January. 2020 will see the introduction of several new classes including Opera and Italian.

The Winda Woppa Assn and Jimmys Beach Preservation Society have both had AGM’S and both have appointed new committees. There is a possibility they may merge into one group in the future.

President, Mr. Len Roberts addressed the meeting by thanking all for their support during what was a difficult year for him. Vindication was achieved in October and all alleged charges were dropped by the Courts. He summarised a successful year for the Association, where we hosted a series of “meet the candidate” sessions for aspiring politicians in the State and Federal elections. Follow up sessions will be arranged during 2020.

The Area newspaper (NOTA) and where possible arrange for the Developer to present their plans to future community meetings. A display of information on the Parry’s Cove development is available in the Tea Gardens Council office.

Mr. Alex Bull recently presented traffic modelling relating to possible emergencies and the need for residents to evacuate rapidly and safely. Following this presentation, Progress will arrange to have RFS, Police and SES address a meeting to advise on personal plans, refuges and how to deal with emergencies such as fire, floods and storms.

It is also planned to have Council Directors, together with the Finance manager meet with the community at a future meeting As this was an AGM, all committee positions were declared vacant and the current committee was subsequently re-elected. Len Roberts will remain President and Lorraine Lock stays as Secretary and Treasurer.

The next meeting will be held on Monday 10 February at 7pm Uniting Church Tea Gardens and all of you are invited to attend. Your chance to join the Association and have your say on the well-being of our community.

The committee would like to wish all members and potential members a very Merry Xmas and a successful New Year.

Christmas Breakup Day

By Elsa JONES Hawks Nest Ladies Golf EIGHTY-one ladies attended the Christmas breakup day at the Golf Club, including some of the 9 hole Tuesday ladies and others who had been on the sick list.

After playing a team event in very hot and humid conditions it was great to get into the Club with the air conditioning.

The ladies sat down to dishes of Christmas lollies, sandwiches, squash and Christmas cake With carol music In background.

They were entertained on the day by various ladies telling funny stories, a skit on Hiawatha and Little White Dove and another about a funny telephone conversation between a servant and his master ending up that the master thought more of his new Golf Club than his wife.

Several teams dressed up for our special day and there were small bottles of champagne for the winners and runners up.

“How much flexibility can I ask for in my settlement date?”

Congratulations to Tom Evans, Darren Carrall and Greg Millet who took out the first, second and third in the men's event.

Ladies Champion went to Vanessa Shultz, second place closely followed

by Fiona Millet and third place to Melissa Smith.

The juniors honours were taken out by henry Hancock, Jackson Styles and Grace McRae. It was an eventual fishing year with many large fish being cast.
