The Droghers of Tea Gardens

By Kate MILFORD AT the height of the timber trade in the Tea Gardens area, ‘droghers’, or barges predominated on the waterway.

They were, at first, poled craft until the introduction of marine steam engines in the area.

Exploitation of the cedar stands in the Tea Gardens area began in 1795.

The cutting of timber was carried out by convicts who manhandled the logs to the lakes.

They were then lashed together as rafts and poled out to waiting ships.

The restored model “Iluka” replica was originally built by Michael Pratte.

The late Peter Newell took on the job of restoring the replica. It had been severely damaged by the weather and by vandals.

He was close to completing the work when he passed around six months ago.

“It was such a privilege and honour to be able to complete Peter’s work,” said President of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Men's Shed, John Adkins.

“He was meticulous in all he did. We were able to complete the project to his very high standards.”

Led by Des Pagett, John Adkins and Les Beggs, the team at the Men’s Shed with Ben Hanson’s support were determined to finish the work in honour of Peter.

The replica now stands proudly in the beer garden at the Tea Gardens’ Pub.

Don’t forget your Beach Permit DRIVING on MidCoast’s stunning beaches can be a great way to explore the coastline, but not without a 2019/20 beach vehicle access permit, available now at outlets across the region.

The permits provide access to some of the region’s most pristine beaches, stretching from Kylies Beach in the north, down to Hawks Nest in the south. But the team at MidCoast Council is keen to remind 4WD’ers that our beach environments are sensitive and dynamic, and that holding a permit comes with a responsibility to protect both the environment and other beach users.

“It’s important that beach drivers are considerate of others, and respectful of their surroundings”, said Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council’s Director of Community Spaces and Services.

“There are rules that apply, not only for the safety of all beach users, but to help protect the

dune environment.”

Permit-holders are responsible for complying with beach driving rules which include driving only between the high and low tide marks, using only designated access points, observing a maximum speed limit of 40km / hour (or 15km / hour when within 100m of others), and remaining at least 15m away from pedestrians at all times. Council rangers and NSW Police are authorised to enforce the rules, with fines and permit cancellation in place for those who do not comply. More information and a full outline of rules and responsibilities for beach drivers can be found at www.midcoast.nsw. gov.au/beachdriving Catering for locals and tourists alike, standard permit options include an Annual Pass (July to June, $100), and a shorter 30-Day Pass (valid for 30 days from date of purchase, $60). The fees collected through the sale of

permits are allocated to maintaining beach access points, undertaking important dune rehabilitation works and weed control, and implementing a series of initiatives to assist in the protection of shore bird habitats.

“Our message to all beach-goers is about sharing the shore responsibly, whether that’s by adhering to beach driving rules, controlling dogs on our dog-friendly beaches, or taking your rubbish home with you, our beaches are natural assets we can be proud of and should work together to protect.”

Beach access vehicle permits can be purchased from all Council Customer Service locations as well as through authorised resellers.

By Ann SCULLY ACCORDING to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in 2015 breast cancer was the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and also the most commonly diagnosed cancer in females.

It is now estimated that it will become the most commonly diagnosed cancer in 2019 among males and females because the incidence of prostate cancer is expected to be lower than that of breast cancer in 2019.

Our local group, Women and Cancer – known as WAC – meet on the first Monday of every month, 2.00pm at the Benchmark on Booner in Hawks Nest to enjoy a coffee, friendship and fellowship in an informal atmosphere.

One of the ladies who attends, Daphne Frew, told News of the Area, “It is just wonderful to sit and talk with the girls in a casual and relaxed way to discuss latest developments which keep you up to date.

“The ladies share their thoughts and experiences and express how they are coping with their treatment.”

If you have recently been diagnosed with or have a previous history of cancer, you would be more than welcome to the get togethers which are called, “WAC A DO”.

It is not unusual for the assets in an estate to include shares in companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

If those shares were purchased by the deceased after 23 September 1985 (being the date Capital Gains Tax (“CGT”) was introduced in Australia) and if they are sold, then CGT will be payable in respect of the profit generated by the sale.

However, if the beneficiary of the shares decides to keep the shares, then no CGT is payable by the beneficiary unless he or she subsequently sells the shares.

The beneficiary will receive the dividends whilst he or she continues

to own the shares. If the beneficiary still owns the shares when he or she dies, then they pass under the beneficiary’s Will to the next beneficiary. No CGT is then payable unless the shares are sold.

The dilemma for (some) beneficiaries is to decide whether to sell the shares and incur the CGT or to keep the shares and therefore pass the CGT liability to the next owner.

It is wise for the executor of a deceased estate to establish the purchase price of the shares and inform the beneficiary as when the shares are ultimately sold (whenever that may be), the cost price must be known to establish the CGT payable.

By Gordon GRAINGER THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Progress Association met at their new premises on Monday 8 July.

The Agenda included reports from the many Community Groups and underlines numerous activities this remarkable community is involved.

Several issues of interest were raised. Among them was to discuss with groups as to how best to use the $300K federal funding for refurbishment of the Community Hall and old library.

A decision is required shortly.

MidCoast Council will establish a Reference Group which will provide a planning process in relation to arts and culture.

The group will work with the Assn. in identifying creative places, programs and people we have in our region.

Detail of Tea Gardens Police Station upgrade is still not disclosed.

The MLA for Port Stephens, Mr. Taylor Martin MLC has advised an amount of $817K in this years’ budget, however there could be confusion with the Karuah station (also to be upgraded) as Tea Gardens have lodged a DA for a demountable only, costing $154K. To be continued.

The two public wharves are being used in increasing numbers and for historical and identification purposes, it is suggested they be given names.

The names of “Salamander” and “Ability “ have been put forward in memory of 2 droghers who used the timber loading wharves in the early days. Approval needs to be obtained from Council.

Under shelter seating at the ferry wharf was not included in the shelter tender and Council are unable to assist.

It is considered a necessity and now GOL100 becomes a community project which Progress will pursue.

The next meeting will be held 7 pm Monday 12th Aug at the Uniting Church Hall Tea Gardens. All Welcome.

MOTORFEST 2020 is now confirmed for Saturday, 14 March 2020 to be held at Myall Sports Oval Hawks Nest and organisers are expecting 400-450 veteran, vintage, classic and unique vehicles to participate in this fantastic, annual event.

Co-ordinator of the event, Juergen Seil, told News of the Area, “The good news is that MidCoast Council has once again issued the formal approval for the use of Myall Sports Oval in Hawks Nest.

“It will be the 18th Annual Community Aid Event Day which will benefit local organisations who do not receive Government support.”

A 9-12 month Action Plan has been put in place by the Motorfest Management Team which will steer this major event to a high level of success as per previous years.

Juergen went on to say that motels, hotels and resorts can now accept bookings for

accommodation.

“This year in March, a new trend emerged with many visiting Clubs extending their stay for the whole weekend, with them arriving on Friday afternoon and departing on Monday morning.”

Positive feedback from visitors was that they enjoyed what is on offer in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, so if you have friends or relatives who own older vehicles, why not invite them to come for a visit and participate in our home grown event, Motorfest 2020.

By Gordon GRAINGER THE Southern Area Reference Group met on Friday 5 July and again, a number of outstanding issues were raised.

It has been acknowledged that these matters must be addressed by Council staff with more alacrity.

Accordingly, Council is developing a website which will enable community members to register complaints on-line and a time limit imposed for response.

Successes include shade about to be erected on Providence Park. Installation of road signage at the junction of Kingfisher and Mungo Brush Roads.

Community Donations

Program delivers across Region MIDCOAST Council has committed more than $55,000 to providing financial assistance for community development and capacity building projects, through the Community Donations Program.

The program aims to assist organisations to deliver projects and activities that support community connections and the retention of unique, diverse and culturally rich communities across the MidCoast region.

In a council meeting held late last month, the first round of projects that will benefit from the policy was endorsed by Councillors.

There were three program categories available to applicants being Annual Donations, Seed Funding and Recurrent Donations and 28 applications were received

across all three categories.

The criteria for assessment included capacity building and community ownership, services and activities which align with the MidCoast Community Strategic Plan and the extent to which the service or activity enhances the lives of those living in the MidCoast Council local government area.

All applications were assessed by a Donations Assessment Panel and as a result, 19 projects were chosen to receive donations of varying amounts, totalling $55,188.

Helicopter Spraying of Bitou Bush The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be undertaking herbicide spraying of Metsulfuron methyl 600WG for the control of Bitou Bush on headlands and beaches in Myall Lakes National Parks (including Broughton Island) and Little Broughton Island Nature Reserve.

Herbicide Spraying MidCoast Council will be carrying out a range of herbicide spraying activities in various waterways, open drains, and retention ponds; on roadsides and reserves; and on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries, reserves and Council building surrounds within the entire MidCoast Local Government area during the months July, August, September and October 2019.

These activities will be targeting general vegetation, grasses, reeds, bindii, broadleaf, annual, perennial and environmental weeds and each program is subject to weather conditions. Only qualified operators will be undertaking works.

On the roadsides and reserves, subject to availability and need, registered herbicides Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360, Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate), and/or Metsun 600, Lynx WG, Kenmet and/or Grazon extra will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable.

In various waterways and retention ponds Herbicides Weedmaster Duo, Sixgun 360, Biochoice 360 and/or Glymac 360 (360g/L glyphosate) will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable and as a precaution residents are advised to refrain from using, drinking or swimming in the water for two weeks following treatments.

Registered herbicides, chemicals Spearhead, Kamba M and Broadside will be used as per label directions on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries, reserves and Council building surrounds.

Scheduled areas will be assessed individually and treated as required. Individual areas will be sign-posted at the times of treatment in commonly accessed areas. A list of areas to be treated is available from your local MidCoast Council office.

13 July The semi-final round of the Club Championship Triples was played today in appalling conditions.

The forecast was for strong to gale force winds from the southwest and it was accurate to the letter!

It was to be a tough assignment for the 12 players competing with delivered bowls acting in any manner of bizarre ways.

In the Danny Johnson v Dave Perry game, Dave’s team established an early lead but then dropped a 7, easy to do in the conditions.

The momentum they had was

lost and Danny’s side really rubbed it in winning 10 of the next 13 ends which included 2 fours and a six.

Ouch!

The final score; Danny Johnson, Col Saillard and Ross Barry romping home 37-17.
