The Myall Coast Toy Library will resume on Saturday 18 July after months of closure due to COVID-19.

THE Myall Coast Toy Library will resume on Saturday 18 July after months of closure due to COVID-19.

Secretary of Myall Coast Toy Library, Jenny Brailey, said that they were looking forward to starting back up, offering hundreds of toys, games and puzzles for kids of all ages.

“We’ll be open the first Thursday and third Saturday of every month, from 9am to 11am.”

“There are certain guidelines that we will

need to follow, outlined by health authorities, including children not being allowed to come into the hall, but rather looking at and choosing toys and games online from our website catalogue.”

“There will also be a catalogue available at the Toy Library to help with the selection of toys and games.”

“Those coming will also need to register on arrival, and all toys and games will need to be cleaned before returning.”

“Any toys or games that have been borrowed will be cleaned and put aside for a

week of quarantine before being able to be borrowed again.”

The Myall Coast Toy Library operates on a borrowing system, allowing members to borrow new toys and games and exchange them for different items every couple of weeks.

The group is located at the Tea Gardens Uniting Church Hall at 120 Myall St in Tea Gardens.

He was part of the US Army Small Ships Section, skippering a Tasmanian tugboat ferrying supplies through enemy lines to Allied forces holding the Papua/New Guinea coast and neighbouring islands.

Bill and his crew were on constant alert from enemy attack and at times they were bombed and strafed by Japanese raiders.

Bill went on to be decorated by the United States Army for contributions in defending Australia.

Sadly, those services were not recognised by the Australian government, Defence, and affiliated bodies.

Bill returned to Tea Gardens and started a successful career in real estate, donating the land to the RSL Club and for the local Ambulance Station.

He passed away

BELIEVE It Or Not: The Bill Ripley Story is the incredible tale of Bill Ripley from Tea Gardens.

The two-volume hardcover has been carefully compiled by Stuart Ripley, the grandson of the book’s leading man.

The biography starts from in the early twentieth century with Bill as a young man, working as a deckhand on the store boats trading across the waters of Port Stephens.

He quickly became a capable seaman, which refined his talent for professional sculling, then a top international sport.

Successfully combining work and sport, Bill gained his Harbour Master’s Certificate and won a State sculling title, earning the title of ‘coming champion’.

World War One broke out but the keen young man was deemed medically unfit.

He overcame the stigma through achieving the merit of ship’s captain.

He piloted the local emporium trading and cargo steamers Nepean and Coweambah (G.A. Engel & Sons) that travelled to Port Stephens and bi-weekly to Newcastle.

Resuming sculling, his successes against the world’s best accorded him an international rating and a tilt at the world championship.

Bill happily retired early from professional sport, enjoying his marriage, family, and working in Tea Gardens.

A Codicil is a simple way to amend a complex Will.

A Codicil and your Will will be read together by your executor or executors as one document outlining your testamentary intentions.

Usually a Codicil is a short document which will: • Set out your name and address.

• The date of your Will, and if there are any other Codicils prepared.

Further, if there is a question of testamentary capacity, then a Codicil may be preferred as the Codicil

A Codicil must be signed in the same manner as a Will: with two independent adult witnesses, who are not named in the Will or the Codicil.

A Codicil however, should be used cautiously, and preparing a new Will is preferred in most cases.

Two new books for local author

By Ashley CHRYSLER FOR local Tea Gardens author, Garry Boyd, writing is an integral part of his life.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s also really enjoyable and rewarding,” said Mr Boyd.

Mr Boyd has been writing for nearly 20 years, mainly short stories, until his first book Black Gold was published in 2007.

His two newest books – Bags Full and Escapees from the Attic – both took nearly 18 months to write.

“Bags Full is set in a tiny

outback town about 100 kilometres from Broken Hill,” Mr Boyd said.

“The story deals with the town’s fight to exist during a terrible drought after a mysterious stranger rode through the town years before.”

“The name Lasseter of the gold reef fame was mentioned in passing.”

“Some townspeople claimed he had four saddlebags on a pack horse full of what looked like ‘yellow rocks’.”

“The rider heads off to

Broken Hill but is found dead halfway with, according to the police, no suspicious circumstances and no saddlebags.”

According to Mr Boyd, readers of his second book, Escape from the Attic, will “get a good laugh out of this one.”

Mr Boyd will host a book signing for Bags Full at the Tea Gardens Hotel Silver Dolphin Room on Saturday 18 July from 11am to 1pm.

Both books will be on sale at the signing – Bags Full for $20, and Escapees from the Attic for $10 – and will also be available for purchase at Gallery in the Gardens in Tea Gardens.

THE restrictions of the past months have reinforced the importance of not only contacting family and friends, but socialising with other players and continuing to play golf.

With Covid restrictions easing, and Hawks Nest Ladies Golf members adhering to the social distancing protocols, competitions and annual events are again being held.

There have been a good number of entries in these

Also, our members who

normally head north for the winter months have continued to play golf while waiting for the borders to

re-open.

It has been very pleasing to see an increase in the number of ladies joining as playing members. We welcome new members and encourage others to join.

As well as regular weekly competitions we have been able to complete some of our annual championship events. The single match play championship has been held and the final was between Sue Kovacs and Ann Syme.

Congratulations to Sue Kovacs on her win.

The Ladies Foursomes Championship has also been completed. Congratulations to the 2020 champions Annette Benton and Deb Matheson.

Don’t share the enthusiasm Dear News Of The Area,

I HAVE lived in Hawks Nest for over twenty one years now and although I spend a lot of my time in, on and around the water, I do not share the community enthusiasm for the continued dredging of the eastern (short cut) channel of the Myall River.

In my twenty plus years I have witnessed four major dredging programs in the eastern channel. In every case the benefits of the dredging have been largely lost within a year or two as rapid resedimentation has returned the channel to something like its pre-dredging condition.

It is hard to find any objective scientific support for the dredging. I would urge readers unfamiliar with the background to the issue to read the Conclusions from the final report of The Myall River InterAgency Task Group, December 2012.

There is not enough space to list them here in full but the following extracts are interesting: *On the basis of the best available scientific evidence and investigations

undertaken by the Task Group, there is currently no over-arching environmental requirement for undertaking channel works in the eastern channel. * From the perspective of navigation requirements, dredging of the eastern channel is not favoured due to instability and ongoing maintenance costs and the long established and more stable northern navigation channel. * It would be beneficial to prepare “plain-English” information for the community explaining natural processes

at work in the estuary and the limited environmental benefits associated with dredging the eastern channel. The costs of the initial and any follow-up dredging campaigns should also be identified.

We are now witnessing the second major dredging program since the Task Group Report was published. It’s conclusions appear to have been ignored.

Dear Mrs TP, THIS one is a bit of a dilemma as at an off-leash beach, there are all sorts of unwritten rules and regulations.

If you have a fluffy white dog with small dog’s syndrome, it is not acceptable to let this dog roam freely, barking and biting the legs of bull terriers and then feigning surprise if they retaliate. Keep little Primrose in your arms or in your tote bag. She isn’t a real dog anyway.

If you have one of those throwing contraptions that allow you to launch your tennis ball a good 200 metres, it is poor form to throw the ball into the ocean just because you own a golden retriever. Every other dog will dive in and attempt, with varying degrees of success, to fetch the ball. It is their natural instinct. Some will sink like a stone, some will need to be rescued and some will return empty-mouthed and sulky, while the golden retriever will win every time because that’s its instinct. It’s just not a fair playing field. Show offs!

If you have a puppy or any dog that doesn’t understand a basic recall command, it should be on a leash because frankly there is nothing worse than reclining on a towel, eyes closed, imagining you are in Tahiti and there is no such thing as a pandemic going on, and then having Fido jump all over you, scratching your torso and ensuring that you are now a hot mess of sand, sunscreen and dog hair. Yes, it is a ‘dog beach’ but that doesn’t mean no one else can enjoy themselves.

I think we all remember the scene in Marley & Me when the dog defecates in the ocean.

Make sure you have bags on hand, use them, and put them in the bins provided. This seems so blatantly obvious that I shouldn't have to mention it, and yet there are still some people who are apparently too precious to clean up after their pooch.

We are very fortunate to have off-leash areas for our dogs, but common sense prevails and many dogs and their owners don’t seem to have a lot of it.

Residents have also sought Council support to

upgrade the park road and facilities.

To local Government matters, the MidCoast Council has placed its first Local Strategic Planning Statement on exhibition and is seeking community feedback until Monday 17 August.

“The planning statement provides a 20 year land-use vision for the MidCoast, outlining how growth and change will be managed to enhance the high levels of liveability, environmental amenity and rural character that characterises our region,” said Mayor David West.

Residents can read the statement on their website and provide feedback until 7 August.

The next MidCoast Council Ordinary Council meeting is 22 July, On a state level, the 15 July is residents last day to have their say on whether the Myall Coast towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest and surrounding townships should stay in the State Electorate of Port Stephens.

PERMITS: Down to Hawks Nest in the south DRIVE on MidCoast’s stunning beaches can be a great way to explore the coastline, but not without a 2020/21 beach vehicle access permit, available now at outlets across the region.

The permits provide access to some of the region’s most pristine beaches, stretching from Kylies Beach in the north, down to Hawks Nest in the south.

But the team at MidCoast Council are keen to remind 4WD’ers that our beach environments are sensitive and dynamic, and that holding a permit comes with a responsibility to protect both the environment and other beach users.

“It’s important that beach drivers are considerate of others, and respectful of their surroundings”, said Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council’s Director of Community Spaces and Services.

“There are rules that apply, not only for the safety of all beach users, but to help protect the dune environment.”

Permit-holders are

responsible for complying with beach driving rules which include driving only between the high and low tide marks, using only designated access points, observing a maximum speed limit of 40km / hour (or 15km / hour

when within 100m of others), and remaining at least 15m away from pedestrians at all times. Rules are also in place to protect endangered shorebirds that feed and nest on our beaches and are vulnerable to vehicles and

animals. Signposted and fenced-off shorebird nesting sites are prohibited zones for 4WDs, pedestrians, and pets.

Council rangers and NSW Police are authorised to enforce the rules, with fines and permit cancellation in place for those who do not comply. More information and a full outline of rules and responsibilities for

Beach access vehicle permits can be purchased from all Council Customer Service locations as well as through authorised re-sellers.

The pensioner concession available on Annual permits has this year been extended to all seniors card holders, however you will need to show your card at the time of purchase.

By Gordon GRAINGER ALMOST half the year gone and what a year so far. Just as things on the improve, the Victorian lockdown has clamped shut and we can only hope the upsurge in Corvid does not spread this way.

Judging from the number of visitors in town, no doubt due to school holidays, we hope our commercial businesses are enjoying a welcome respite to the dismal year experienced to date.

On the subject of school holidays, we have noticed that the majority of bike riders crossing the bridge are obeying the new traffic signs and dismounting when using the footpath. To date we are still to learn if the proposal to convert the pathways to one-way traffic for motorised wheelchairs has been accepted. Things seem to move slowly with regard to the Traffic Committee.

With the relaxing of restrictions, we are hopeful to be able to resume some meetings in the near future, however there are several issues we are able to report

• The Tea Gardens Police Station upgrade and resulting “Swedish Sauna” is a continuing black eye for this community and its strong historical ties. It is a disgrace to claim we have a $1mio upgrade. Our State Representative, Kate Washington has begun a petition, mailed to all residents, seeking 10,000 signatures calling for an enquiry. This petition will cover the affected stations of Tea Gardens, Karuah and Lemon Tree Passage, all of which are in the Port Stephens Electorate. With 10,000 signatures, the matter can be introduced in State Parliament and answers must be provided under oath.

Signatories do not have to be residents and we have handed out copies to a number of outlets in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens where visitors can sign.

• The cancellation of Council bulk waste collection has caused some concern amongst residents, who are claiming they pay for the service in their rates and in the event the service has been cancelled, why should they have to pay tip fees. And a very good question!

This has prompted the writer to investigate the matter of tip fees and can share my findings with our readers The installation of a

weighbridge and stop / go lights is necessary as the State Govt. waste levy is being introduced to all Council tips. Councils do not make any income, despite the staff being Council employees.

State Government charged Council a levy of $84 per tonne of waste and earned in excess of $800 mio. from Council tips over the past 12 months. Mid Coast Council contribution to the State Govt is roughly $4 mio each year.

• The Parry’s Cove development in Tea Gardens has received full “six leaf” status from EnviroDevelopment which comprises a panel of government, industry and environmental experts.

Sheargolds’ Managing Director, Michael Sheargold was delighted to learn of the award which is made over 6 categories involving ecosystems, waste, energy, materials, water and community. This is a significant achievement and bodes well for our Tea Gardens growth.

• Volunteers from Wanda Woppa Assn. and the Jimmys Beach Preservation Assn. have joined forces in dune preservation work along The Boulevarde. They are removing bitou bush and planting the area with coastal wattle, pigface and lomandra which are slow growing natives which will provide

q stabilisation to the dunes.

The area is being fenced to protect the young plants and the general public is asked to be aware of the project and stay out of the fenced area.

Hopefully the Commission will agree and consign the proposal to the bin as a very poor case of gerrymandering.

If not, we, the public will be asked our opinion. We will

• Myall Coast Radio has commenced test transmissions, which show an audio reach of over 23000 people which include the residents on the southern side of Port Stephens. The studios are located in Wanya St. Tea Gardens and equipment fit out will commence this week.

Costs have been met by a large number of Seed Funders and the committee expect they will begin transmission in early spring. Volunteers are invited to help in the project and contact the station at admin@myallcoastradio. com.au.

Our TGHN Surf Life Saving Club's Excellence Continues

q Volunteer of the Year Award – Debbie Booth

OUR Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club is a member of the Hunter Branch of NSW Surf Lifesaving.

Recently the Hunter Branch conducted their Awards of Excellence for the 2019-2020 Surf Life Saving season. Well, TGHN SLSC continues to excel and the club’s members especially.

TGHN SLSC was nominated in two important categories, one being “Volunteer of the Year”. Imagine how many volunteers there are in the Surf Life Saving movement, every one of them is a volunteer.

What a field !!

Well – as our community says – how lucky are we - It is with the greatest of pleasures that we can announce the winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award – Debbie Booth.

How Good. There is not anyone more deserving in TGHN SLSC than of Debbie Booth to receive the Volunteer of the Year award. TGHN SLSC is honoured to have Deb in the club and are so very very proud that she received this award at the Hunter Awards of Excellence Evening. Congrats Deb. The message from the Hunter Branch CEO, Rhonda Scruton, to TGHN SLSC – “Well Done TGHN SLSC, to win in this

branch is an honour amongst amazing people in all our 13 clubs. A great example of a great lifesaver. “ Deb originally moved to Tea Gardens as a schoolteacher at Tea Gardens Primary School and has even been spotted in the Duck Suit at our Myall River Festival promoting the prestigious Duck Race for the Tea Gardens Primary School.

Debbie has dedicated over 20 years of surf lifesaving patrols for our community on Bennet’s Beach, was the first lady president of the Hunter Branch of NSW Surf Life Saving as well as President, Secretary, , Chief Training officer, First aid officer, Public Officer of our Surf Club and more recently Branch Director of Education for the Hunter Branch for Surf Clubs from TGHN in the North to Catherine Hill Bay to the South.

It is also because of people like Debbie that TGHN has some amazing young life-savers coming through that helped TGHN SLSC be nominated for the Education Program of the Year. There could be more news to come – can it be 2 from 2 from our amazing Surf Life Saving Club. Thanks to TGHN Surf Clubs amazing next generation – let’s see how our local young surf life savers

Mens bowling news Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

VALE Vaughn Bryant: It is with some sadness that I report the passing of another of our bowlers, Vaughn Bryant.

Vaughn, as he was known, passed away recently and will be missed from the bowling fraternity, especially those playing social bowls.

Vaughn played at Pennant standard before joining us at Tea Gardens BC but time and arthritis played havoc with his hands.

So keen was he that he utilized a bowling arm and learned to play left-handed when his right hand made it difficult.

He will be missed.

8 July: Thirty-eight bowlers attended today for more “unofficial” games of Pairs.

Although no prizes were

on offer, the bowling was keen, competitive and most enjoyable.

Next week, weather permitting, the format will revert to Nominated Triples which will hopefully attract a larger field.

10 July: A small band of bowling “junkies” turned out for a game today with most playing on the grass green.

It was slow going but our greenkeeper, Steve Green, now has this surface running very true.

Next season our grass green will be the envy of other Clubs.

11 July: Today the uncompleted second round of the Club Championship Pairs was played with six teams competing.

ANOTHER good week of bowling for our members we are all so appreciative of being back on the green and enjoying the amenities of Tea Gardens Country Club.

Tuesday 7th July: Format for play 4 games of 3 bowls Pairs, 18 ends and 3 bowlers ( Karen McPhie. Robyn Webster and Robyn Beaumont), played Canadian Singles, the first time we have played this.

Each bowler has 4 bowls.

The object of the game is to win 2 consecutive ends to gain a point. Of course, no need to say the opposing bowlers pull out all their best shots to prevent this from happening. Result of this contest was a tie but all 3 ladies enjoyed the game.

On Rink 1 Dawn Jones and Dot Dallas v Faye Giggins

and Maynie Roberts this was a fairly close contest until the 15th end where Dawn and Dot managed to score 4 shots, repeating this effort on the last end as well, winning 24 v 17.

Great to see Faye back at bowls after a long break, Faye originally joined TGWBC in the 1990's she was club secretary for 9 years, winner of various championships and club historian, just to briefly mention a few of her achievements. Rink 2 a win to Ingrid Luck and Lorraine Murphy 16 v Christine Fossey and Loretta Baker 12. Jean Glover and Dale Winter defeated Bev Rhodes and Lynda Richards by 8 shots, 23 v 15. Irene Roberts and Judi Polak were "neck to neck" against Sheila Rattray and Jill McBride 13 all on the 16th end. The last 2

THE Australian Motor Sport Action Group (AMSAG) – the not-for-profit responsible for organising and managing motor rallies across country New South Wales for its member base, will be getting back on track after suspending

their rallies during COVID-19.

Michael Bannon, AMSAG President, said that they’ve been unable to have any spectators since the start of COVID-19, and that they’ve had to make some important changes to their events to ensure safety.

“It’s not so much the

number of spectators, but knowing where they’re going and that they’re social distancing while at our events; that’s why we’ve decided to just make a blanket call to say no spectators for now.”

Mr Bannon said that it’s typically locals who come out for a look, and that their

spectator numbers tend to sit around 100 to 150 people, including many family and friends.

“These upcoming events, including the one in Bulahdelah, will be run a little differently to the past,” Mr Bannon continued.

“We will have results available online but won’t

MidCoast Council’s Economic Development Coordinator, Robyn Brennan, said that the reactivation of our streets and public spaces will be a positive sight and will lift community spirit.

“Some of the first events

to go ahead will be those in the community sports area and include the AMSAG Car Rally at Bulahdelah on 18 July and the NSW Surf Masters at Boomerang Beach on 30 July,” she said.

Manning Hill Rd will be closed from 5pm until 10pm on Saturday 18 July.
