Gillespie urges people to get the flu vaccine early this year WITH the 2020 flu season not far away, all Australians —and especially those in vulnerable groups or age brackets— should arrange vaccination against seasonal influenza during the month of April.

Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie urged Australians to speak to their GP, pharmacist or aged care provider to arrange a flu vaccination over the coming weeks.

“Whilst flu vaccination does not prevent against COVID-19, a flu vaccination is critical to protecting the general health of Australians from

influenza, and preventing an unnecessary burden on our hospitals of seasonal flu,” Dr Gillespie said.

“The Australian Government has invested more than $80 million to provide more free vaccines under the National Immunisation Program in 2020 than ever before, including an enhanced vaccination for people aged 65 years and over.”

In total over 13.5 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccines have been secured, this includes over 4 million doses of Fluad Quad® for those aged 65 years and older.”

Gillespie urges people to get the flu vaccine early this year FROM Page 1

Immunisation Program provides free vaccines to those most at risk, including: · Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy; · People aged 65 years and older; · People aged six months and older with certain medical risk factors; and · For the first time, all children aged between six months and five years.

Receiving a vaccination from April provides optimal protection in the peak period of influenza circulation, usually

from June to September in most parts of Australia.

This year it is even more important to be vigilant about the flu because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While there is not yet a vaccine or effective treatment for COVID-19, vaccination provides an effective defence against the flu.

Vaccinating against the flu will reduce the risk of a very dangerous double-up of flu and coronavirus—both diseases affecting the respiratory system.

Vaccinated people of all ages are less likely to get the flu and if they do, are less

likely to have a severe case. Fewer cases and fewer severe cases of flu will result in less demand on our health care system.

The actions that we take to slow the spread of COVID-19 can also stop the spread of influenza and other viruses.

Every one of us has a responsibility to contribute to this effort by: · Practising good hygiene · Practising social distancing · Following the Government’s directions on public gatherings and workplaces, and · Understanding how and when to self-isolate.

Illegal dumping of rubbish and waste has been reported occurring in the Tea Gardens' Lions Park Lookout and the Skate Park, as well as in Nature Reserves and seaside areas throughout the Myall Coast.

In some locations, dumping is happening daily.

Dumping degrades environmental beauty, creates health and safety hazards, and attracts vermin and weeds.

Local Police have been alerted and advise anyone who sees dumping to photograph and report it to the NSW Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and to the Midcoast Council.

Locals can use their mobile phones to Report Illegal Dumping (RID).

The RID online website supports people who report dumping, including uploading photos and location information.

PETER Hodges of Tea Gardens has been appointed a Consul of the Kingdom of Araucania-Patagonia, an unofficial State located in Chile and Argentina, South America.

The ancient Kingdom is home to the Mapuche Indians, famed for their delicious

age-old cuisine, and beautifully-intricate artwork and fabrics.

In 2019, Peter was asked by Prince Stanislas I of Patagonia to open a Consulate in Australia.

This request followed Peter’s induction into the Périgord Fine Arts Academy in France in 2018.

As Consul, Peter’s role is to facilitate friendship and understanding between Australia and the Kingdom of AraucaniaPatagonia.

One of Peter’s first official duties was attending the opening of the Consulate of Araucania-Patagoni, Périgueux, in south west France.

Many dignitaries attended, including Prince Stanislas, the Marquis of Montebello, the Count Roland de Lary de Latour, the Baroness Duhamel, and Sir Jean-Jacques d’Allemans, just to name a few.

Peter, and his wife Kerry, have now opened the Consulate with a public space in their Tillermans Restaurant at Tea Gardens.

A local favorite, the French inspired restaurant and now Consulate, is sharing insights into the amazing Kingdom of Araucania-Patagonia.

Through film, photography, cuisine, language and art, Peter is committed to sharing the Indian culture with locals and even more so when social distancing laws are relaxed.

This will be accompanied by a menu of traditional Mapuche cuisine, complimented by Patagonian wines.

Peter told NOTA that France, South America and Australia connections are strengthening, stating, “In 1859, a French lawyer by the name of Antoine de Tounens travelled to South America in search of adventure. He became the first King of Patagonia. He was later arrested

by Chilean authorities for subversion and returned to France where he lived in exile until his death. Every year since, his life is celebrated with a wonderful lunch that is also the Festival of Saint Rose of Lima, the Patron Saint of South American indigenous people.

The Festival is traditionally celebrated in late August and hopefully local restaurants will be open again.”

Tillermans Café Restaurant is currently open, offering fabulous three course feasts to take away as well as coffee, fresh bagels and croissants, home-made soups and an open shopping space.

NSW Health advise that there were 2,854 coronavirus cases in NSW and 24 deaths as at 11 April.

Nationally there are 6,313 cases and 59 deaths as at 3pm on 12 April.

By comparison, last week NOTA reported there were 5,687 cases and 35 deaths.

Of the confirmed NSW cases, 270 in the Hunter New England Health District (as at 11 April), up 25 cases from the 245 cases reported last week.

Good news is that the daily rate of increase has fallen over the past fortnight, indicating that social isolation measures are working and require sustainment.

More good news from the Australian Government which is now supporting small businesses and households, experiencing additional financial stress due to utility bills

MIDCOAST Council has implemented further closures to support NSW Police in their endeavours to stop non-essential outings, with all beaches in the region closed until the end of the school holiday period.

This means no one can access any MidCoast Council controlled beaches across the region for any reason and the NSW Police will be out enforcing these closures.

“Anyone caught flouting these rules will risk being fined by Police,” explained Paul De Szell, Council’s Director of Liveable Communities.

“We know this will hit our community very hard, particularly with the school holidays coming, however it’s a necessary closure at this time - we need to protect our community and we do not know who will breach the Public Health Order and still travel to the area.”

The beach closures are the latest in a long list of Council managed sites and

facilities that have had to be restricted to the public to help stop the spread of COVID19 locally.

These closures include the Manning Regional Art Gallery, the Manning Entertainment Centre, parks and playgrounds, ocean baths and tidal pools, public swimming pools including YMCAs, the Taree airport terminal and more.

“We have 84 managed access tracks across 16 beaches along our coastline and the message from the NSW Police, with our support, is that you can expect to be caught and fined if you try and get on to one of these beaches.”

No, this is not how low we have stooped.

This is (allegedly) how low a couple of young people have stooped and they are not at all reflective of our broader community. Stories such as this one can be really distressing, and they are distressing because most of us cannot fathom, in our wildest dreams, how people could be so uncaring, so insensitive and so devoid of humanity as to cough on vulnerable people in times when they are already anxious.

I think it is important not to dwell on those seeking attention in repulsive ways and instead focus on the many incredible ways people in our community are supporting each other. Just within my small group of friends and neighbours, I have experienced people sharing recipes, bartering fish for meat, checking in with elderly friends, having Zoom parties instead of the usual weekend catch-ups, and helping each other with kids’ homework (who knew Year 9 maths was so challenging?).

I’ve also witnessed locals respecting social distancing measures, but saying hearty greetings to each other as they walk past while exercising, smiling more and generally getting out of their bubbles and realising the many things we have to be grateful for, particularly in an area as spacious and beautiful as Port Stephens.

Businesses are being incredibly innovative and coming up with new ways to meet their customers’ needs. Parents are learning how to be tech-savvy via their children. Pets are being adopted. Many are returning to a simpler way of living – planting veggie patches, baking and even buying chooks. In the midst of this pandemic, there is a lot of good out there. I’m not going to get all Louise Hay or Deepak Chopra on you, but the behaviour of a couple of (insert your collective noun of choice – mine will be censored out by the editor) is not representative of our wonderful community.

Council is continuing to provide essential services to our community and while our face-to-face services have closed, we are open and staff are responding to telephone, email and online enquiries.

Libraries helping the community

While our libraries have shut their doors we are continuing to provide a home library service (with strict health practices in place) and are also offering online services. The library had increased lending limits at the beginning of last week and with news of the impending closure of all branches there was a run on the books.

To put this in context, the preceding Wednesday the library service had lent out 1,912 items, on our final day we lent out 12,688 items. There are virtually no thrillers left on the shelves and very few romance and family saga novels.

The Library has also been ramping up its online services and the community is responding Since the beginning of the month there has been a 40% growth in the loans of eBooks and a 20% growth in the loan of eAudio on our popular BorrowBox platform. We expect this number to grow steadily. The library has also just launched a new IndyReads eBook and eAudio collection and is planning a further online collection, through the RbDigital platform. It also continues to provide access to an online magazine collection, streamed films, online training courses and online storytelling. In addition to this staff have been looking at options to provide

The Tuncurry Operations team is making good progress on roadworks at Crawford St Bulahdelah with the new kerb and gutter nearing completion.

Construction of the new road pavement is programmed to be completed this week with the seal booked on for Friday, weather permitting. Reinstatement of driveways and footpath are planned for next week

Council meetings

Unfortunately most of councils planned community meetings such as emergency management briefings have had to be postponed.

Council meetings and meetings of councillors no longer happen in a physical sense. We are holding our meetings online. You can watch the meeting at the time it is being held through a link on Council’s webpage or listen to it anytime after also through a link on the webpage.

Demographic

Our area is the oldest aged group in NSW if not Australia. We are therefore one of the most vulnerable groups to Covid 19. Therefore we must be vigilant and serious in social distancing. We must also note that currently those in ICU are aged from 30-80. It is essential we heed the message of non-essential travel. We need to understand the threat of community transmission and therefore avoid contact with others. We also must be aware that we are coming in to our flu season and if we get the flu our immunity is weakened. So it is not just a matter of avoiding Covid 19 but as an older demographic we need to be watchful and mindful of catching the flu.

I ask everyone to look after yourselves and others. Stay in contact through phone or social media. Isolation is a real problem that also can affect lives.

We must all follow the stay at home rules to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, save lives and protect our health workers.

THE westerly winds, cooler seas and the full moon over Easter all provide the perfect tides and topwater for this year's sea mullet fish run.

At this time, adult sea mullet leave inland coastal waters in large schools and head northwards along the coastline to their spawning grounds.

Many are driven into Port Stephens and up the Karuah River.

Its a perfect time for fishing which is still permitted under the COVID-19 restrictions with social distancing in place (1.5m) and with a current NSW Fishing Licence.

Best spots are riverside including off Barnes Rocks at Jimmys Beach and riverside down past the Singing Bridge at Tea Gardens.

Professional fishermen are also preparing to fish the mullet, however with COVID-19 restrictions, the market will mostly be local.

The Tea Gardens Fishermans Co-Op will be selling the mullet which is a bonus for the local economy.

Karen Malone from the Co-Op and a born and bred local is looking forward to another mullet run.

“It's different every year, depending on the weather and the seas” Karen told

NOTA, adding, ”And the Coop is still open every day.

We have had some decline in sales and our staff are working day-to-day but the fresh seafood is still

fabulous.”

In NSW the minimum legal length for sea mullet is 30cm with a recreational bag limit of 20.

Parks and garden maintenance still occuring

VOLUNTEERS are continuing to work on parks and garden maintenance across the MidCoast Council area, however they are doing so on an individual basis to enable them to meet social distancing requirements imposed as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response.

There are normally more than 1000 volunteers at work across the region mowing, weeding and whipper

snippering to keep parks and open spaces maintained for the benefit of the community.

While the groups that usually undertake these activities have been put into hiatus, arrangements have been made for individual volunteers to continue this essential work.

“Our volunteers are an extremely important part of how we can deliver maintained open spaces for q Individual basis to enable them to meet social distancing requirements.

“With over 3000 hectares of Parks, 750 hectares of which require mowing there is a huge need for this work to continue so we can provide our community with maintained open space for them to continue to exercise and take care of themselves both physically and mentally at this time.”

Mr De Szell said this is likely to result in reductions in the level of service in some areas that rely heavily on volunteers.

ONLINE Easter Hat Parades, Easter Duck decorating and Church Services connected the Myall Coast Communities during a quiet Easter.

The Stroud Crepe Myrtle Tea & Coffee Rooms hosted an Easter Decorate a Duck competition and local schools conducted online Easter Bonnet Parades.

Easter School Holidays officially end Sunday 26 April.

At this stage, local public schools will open but due to COVID-19, parents are encouraged to keep children home if possible.

By Julie MCKIMM THE effects of COVID-19 are being felt in all areas of our community, including our community sporting clubs.

We have seen the postponement of most winter sports, including Soccer, Netball, Australian Rules Football, Rugby Union, Rugby League and countless others.

Whilst the long-term effects are yet to be felt, short-term effects are already spreading not only to administrators but to our children.

Many local children live and breathe their winter sports, playing both days on the weekends and training up to four times per week, watching anything sport related in between.

Ryley Jewell told News Of The Area, “I’m missing being at footy and kicking a footy

with my mates.”

“I just wish this stupid corona virus would go away so we can start playing soon,” he said.

Parents and children are understanding the importance of social distancing so are looking for options at home to keep active, away from devices and sane during this uncertain time we are experiencing.

Some in the area are lucky enough to have large backyards with football goals and obstacle courses, those with smaller yards are looking toward more fine motor skills requiring less space and going on regular walks and jogs to keep their fitness up.

With the future of this season unknown, every bit of home training counts for something.
