Wonderful Community Meals on Wheels work

By Ashley CHRYSLER MEALS on Wheels has been operating in the Myall area since the mid-80s and plays an important role in supporting those who may need assistance in meal preparation.

Meredyth Rae, Office Manager at Meals on Wheels Tea Gardens Hawks Nest, said that they’ve had an increase in demand through COVID-19 of about 30 to 40 per cent.

“Now that restrictions are easing and some borders have re-opened, a number of our volunteers are taking a much-needed break for holidays, hence needing more help in the kitchen,” she said.

The two-stage project will also need to be funded by the MidCoast Council.

Stage One will improve access to the pool and upgrade the amenities to ensure they are compliant with disabled access requirements.

Stage Two will provide disabled access into the pool for swimming.

“This is a very important project for the aged and disabled in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, who currently struggle to enter the pool site through a turnstile,” Dr Gillespie, stated to locals attending the

MidCoast Council Mayor, David West, added that ensuring access to all was a priority and he was pleased to see work starting at Tea Gardens pool.

“These are projects that the council has long had a vision to deliver for our community and thanks to the Australian Government and the work by David Gillespie we can now make them a reality,” Cr West said.

Dr Gillespie emphasised that the upgrade and other similar projects play an important role in improving local infrastructure, creating local jobs and supporting our regions post-COVID recovery.

The pool has been a much used sport and recreational facility since approved for construction in 1977, supported by local fund raising.

Locals continue to lobby for other important upgrades including heating, improved clean amenities with hot showers, and additional sun protection.

The pool is used for swimming lessons, school swimming carnivals, hydrotherapy, aqua aerobics as well as being home for the Myall Masters and TG/HN Amateur Swimming Clubs.

The pool is generally open from September to April, although with COVID check updates on the MidCoast Council Tea Gardens Swimming Pool website.

Myall Lakes Matters

THE external painting of the weatherboard Tea Gardens Police Station appears to be finished with the soft grey colour a stark contrast against the dark brown of the recently installed prefabricated upgrade, referred to by many locals as a “shipping container”.

Described by the Police Association as “sub-standard”, the $1 million brown box continues to deeply disappoint the local community, falling short of an upgrade that was supposed to complement the Police Station’s Federation style.

At this stage it remains unclear what the State Government will do to recover the heritage value of the precinct which was first a courthouse built in 1910.

Still on disappointment, deep frustration with Telstra, particularly for local businesses depending on telco access to manage through COVID, spilled over onto local social media pages and into frustrated phone calls to NOTA. Telstra experienced a major Domain Name Server (address) issue from 2 August that disrupted some services across the state which has since been resolved.

Locally, Telstra mobile services will continue to be interrupted until 12 August due to planned maintenance with updates on their website.

Maintenance is also what is happening at the Broughton Island campground which will be closed till the 25 September for the replacement and upgrade of the public toilet.

The island remains open to day visitors.

Similarly, Mungo Beach and Bennett’s Beach both remain closed to four-wheel drive access at least until 11 August as unsafe due to the impact of the recent storms.

The Tea Garden’s Lions Club is back in force, maintaining the local Lions Lookout and busy identifying a number of projects in and around town to support the community and environment.

It has been a challenging year for volunteer organisations due to COVID constraining meetings and fundraising activities, so any support is valued.

Finally, the Myall River baker, Milton,

cooked his famous Chicken Kiev sausage rolls for the first time in six years.

Word got out about his chicken, garlic and butter pastry wrapped goodies, locals placed orders, and they were all gone within hours that same morning.

$13,000 for practise range upgrades

HAWKS Nest Golf Club has been granted a $13,000 Stronger Communities Grant for a new, all-weather, undercover practise range.

The Stronger Communities Programme provides grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 to community organisations and local governments for small capital projects that deliver social benefits for local communities.

Greg Acret, General Manager of Hawks Nest Golf Club, said that the current practise range is over 15 years old.

“The old practise nets area will be completely overhauled to include new nets, new artificial turf, new hitting mats, and a roof structure which will allow

Helping Families in Need

RONALD McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Northern NSW is hosting their first ever Raise Love-a-thon and is calling on the community to raise $50,000 for seriously ill children and their families.

Until 17 August, individuals, community groups and businesses can join the Raise Love-a-thon and help provide a home away from home for families in need.

COVID-19 has had a significant impact, restricting the charity’s ability to raise the vital funds needed to help keep families close together. So RMHC made the decision to move its annual Raise Love Ball online.

RMHC Northern NSW CEO, Ross Bingham, told News Of The Area, “Despite the constraints of COVID-19 he is excited to see the online event come together and provide ongoing support to those in need.

“The world around us is changing, but childhood illness doesn’t halt and RMHC have families that still need our help,” he said.

“Isolation, home-schooling, and the constant fear of infection isn’t new for families who need RMHC – it’s a way of life, often for months and even years while their child is seriously ill or injured.”

Parents of children who have had cancer understand lockdown more than many, because their families have lived through lockdowns.

One mother described having lived through three lockdowns.

Once while her child was on treatment and had a low immune system.

Next the swine flu hit, and they homeschooled for 5 months, she described this as “a necessary evil”.

As a parent she is looking anxiously at COVID-19 in the community.

It is a part of life for her family and others like hers in high risk categories being careful. It's in their DNA. These families are on high alert.

It is a fact that many are more impacted by the pandemic than others – but we tend not to think about young people or cancer patients.

“That’s why we are looking beyond COVID-19 to create the Raise Love-athon event, which we hope will raise $50,000 to fund 370 nights at Ronald McDonald House,” he said.

The Raise Love-a-thon fundraiser will culminate in a live-streamed event on 17 August where the final tally will be revealed.

Ronald McDonald House Charities are 100% community owned and operated, so the assistance of the community is vital in providing sick children and their families the support they need.

Each year the organisation provides support to more than 6,000 families from across NSW, helping achieve the best outcomes for families by reducing the impact of their child’s illness.

A SMALL group of Myall U3A Gardeners met last week at The Old Library, Hawks Nest, to plan the future direction of the Club.

Linda Leggott has very kindly offered to act as the new Garden Club Convener because Norma Glen has recently stepped down from this position.

Norma has been extremely creative when organising activities for the Club and she will continue to participate and advise.

The Group discussed what they were doing with their gardens this winter, what they were planting and most importantly, what knowledge or ideas they need to improve their gardens.

A popular idea was to form a community garden which could involve the wider community of Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens.

Members were also enthusiastic about researching the richness and diversity of our local fauna and flora and what to plant to encourage our native birds, bees and other wildlife.

This will be a rich

and rewarding project for the group, combined with visits to private and botanical gardens.

Of course members will continue to bring their show and tell plants and discuss gardening tips.

The Myall U3A Garden Group does not need to be reminded of the joys of gardening. Modern life is often stressful and a beautiful garden becomes our own personal oasis.

Gardening is a slow process and it helps us to relax and lower stress levels.

Our minds can rejoice in the peace that a garden can offer.

Linda closed the meeting with her favourite quote about gardening from Julie Moir Messervey, 'The Inward Garden (1995) “ I have found through the years of practice, that people garden to make things grow, to interact with nature, to share and find sanctuary for healing and to honour the earth and leave a mark. Through gardening we feel whole as we make our personal work of art upon our land.”

Turnoff signs back up

By Ashley CHRYSLER THE turnoff signs for Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest were damaged in a car accident in June, and had been placed at ground level and sandbagged in the road median until early July, when another highway crash claimed the life of a 90-year-old man.

Investigations into that fatal crash are still ongoing.

Ian Lyne, resident of Hawks Nest, said that the signs placed at ground level made it very difficult for some drivers, especially those in lower vehicles, to see the oncoming traffic at the turnoff.

“I drive a small car and couldn’t really see

over the signs when they were propped up at ground level.”

“I’m not surprised there was an accident there to be honest, you almost had to inch into traffic a bit just to be able to see around them,” he said.

Transport for NSW told News Of The Area that they had initiated the process for replacement as soon as the initial incident and damage was reported.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said, “The existing directional sign on the Pacific Highway at Tea Gardens has been reinstalled as a temporary measure.”

“A new sign will be reinstalled by midAugust, weather permitting.”

The spokesperson furthered that a full replacement of the signs’ support structure is required, and that manufacture and installation is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Telehealth while Pandemic is here

By Marian SAMPSON TELEHEALTH has been a new way for many of us to access health professionals during the pandemic.

For many it has been seen as a blessing, with the advent of widespread use of technology to see our general practitioners and specialists saving us long journeys, and waiting time in surgeries and hospitals.

Telehealth has made the workplace safer for healthcare workers too, limiting the number of people that they are being exposed to during the pandemic.

Dr Paul Craven works in paediatrics with Hunter New England Health, and he has been using telehealth to supplement face to face appointments with patients for a long time.

Using telephones and videos he has been “seeing” patients through outreach in the north and other areas of the State from John Hunter Hospital.

He sees patients at the beginning of life but believes that there is no barrier for telehealth to allow for care at all stages of life.

Dr Craven told News Of The Area, “COVID-19 switched the way healthcare is being delivered overnight with an increase from 70 to 700 telehealth consultations delivered in one week.”

The feedback has been positive, with less disruption to work being one positive cited.

He is a great proponent for telehealth and believes that it allows specialists to work with local services to deliver great outcomes for patients.

Of course there are pros and cons; “When you see a patient face to face you can see if they are well.”

“I think that it is really important that it is right for the patient,” he said.

Telehealth models may include a visit from a district nurse providing observations or be conducted with a general practitioner and a specialist working together.

For the Myall Coast and Port Stephens the jupiter service which delivers mental health services for youth has pivoted to a version of telehealth throughout the pandemic called 'Teleport'.

Teleport is working alongside face to face services around the region. jupiter has despite the uncertain times been providing young people with a “Space to talk”. “jupiter is adapting with the times of the coronavirus (COVID-19) we have introduced “teleport” our Telehealth Service“ Space to talk”, allowing eligible young people in the Port Stephens area to connect with a practitioner that fits their area of need, receiving professional psychology, counselling and general wellbeing support without leaving their home.” said Paul Pearton, Operations Manager and Counsellor for jupiter.

Telehealth is here to stay, it may never replace 100 percent of our healthcare visits, but it may well provide people particularly in regional areas with greater access to specialist services in our own homes, towns and local health services facilities.

Community Calls for Ammonium Nitrate to move or reduce

By Marian SAMPSON THE massive and devastating blast in Lebanon’s capital Beirut has left a path of death and destruction.

While the circumstances of the storage of the 2,750 tonnes of explosive ammonium nitrate are not repeated here, storage of a far greater quantity of the chemical is stored locally.

Ammonium Nitrate events include a Texas fertiliser plant in 2013 which killed 15 people which was ruled deliberate, and another accidental explosion at a chemical plant in Toulouse, France, in 2001 that killed 31 people and injured 2,500.

Kooragang Island has long been home to a large stockpile of ammonium nitrate.

In Beirut the explosion has already killed more than 130 people and injured more than 5,000.

The city resembles a war zone of epic proportions.

While many mourn, locally others are looking at the possible impact of the stores on Kooragang Island with a renewed appreciation of the possible outcome of a disaster.

The Orica Company website says, “Within Australia the production, storage and transport of ammonium nitrate by Orica and others is heavily regulated and monitored.

“In addition to these regulations and our own rigorous approach to safety and risk management, our operations at Kooragang Island are regularly inspected by authorities.

“In the Kooragang Island site’s 51-year history there has not been a single incident involving the storage of AN.” News Of The Area understands the Newcastle Stockpile is between 6,000 to 11,000 tonnes compared to the 2,750 tonnes which has devastated Beirut.

The Stockton Community Action Group (SCAG), has been calling for the Orica plant to be relocated, or its stockpiles of ammonium nitrate to be significantly reduced for a long time.

Keith Craig is a Chemical Engineer and holds a Masters of Environmental Science, he sits on the SCAG committee and the Newcastle EPA consultative committee for the environment as well as a community reference group for Orica.

Keith Craig of SCAG told News Of The Area, “For 15 years the group has been working to get the stockpile moved.”

SCAG is keen to see a reduction in volumes and movement of the chemicals.

A French colleague of Craig’s, studying at the university in Toulouse, is scarred from the ammonium nitrate blast there.

His attitude is that if it can happen in France it could happen here, “You can’t

discount the risk totally – it (Kooragang) is not the right place for this type of factory.”

“In a 2011 a leak Orica released carcinogenic chemicals that went over neighbouring suburbs,” Craig said.

A spokesperson for SafeWork NSW said, “Orica Kooragang Island has a licensed capacity for 11,000 tonnes for ammonium nitrate.”

“Premises that store significant quantities of ammonium nitrate are classified as Major Hazard Facilities and are subject to regulation and oversight by way of a whole of government approach by SafeWork NSW, the Environment

Protection Authority, NSW Police and the Department of Planning.”

“SafeWork NSW also conducts periodic spot checks via its post licence verification programs, throughout the licence term.

“Environment protection licences for these facilities also include strict conditions to manage risks to the environment and human health, including regular inspections of all licensed premises to ensure compliance with licence conditions.”

Wintry conditions greeted players Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

5 August: Wintry conditions greeted the 45 players braving the greens today for the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition.

The wind was blowing from an unaccustomed south west making play quite tricky.

The usual suspects featured in sharing the money with, Peter Gurney, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson winning on the synthetic and Lance Atkins, Ron Green and Greg Pearson winning on the grass.

8 August: The quarter-final round of the Club Championship Singles was played today after a morning of bleak and showery weather.

There were no real surprises with the results.

Doug Andrews was definitely “undercooked” in his match against the inform Greg Pearson.

Doug hasn’t played much this year and having no matches to play before this round of the tournament did him no favors.

Greg stormed into the semis with a comfortable 31-14 win.

Bruce Murray was my “dark horse” for this tournament after his great win earlier against Dennis Ashbridge.

He kept his form going with a good win over Dave Benson 31-19.

Like good wine, Jeff Baker just got better with age as he had no intention of forcing Alan Greenhalgh to another marathon.

Jeff had a comfortable 31-10 win to progress to the semis.

have had his locks cut but he still had enough energy to dispose of Luke Gliwa in a good match 31-16.

9 August: There was no rain, but it was bitterly cold today with a blustery south westerly blowing all the way from Antarctica.

The few brave spectators to witness the semi-finals of the Club Championship Singles were rugged up like Antarctic penguins and the conditions for the players were less than ideal.

Dave Perry faced off against Jeff Baker and although he really played well, Jeff made the shots that mattered winning an entertaining game 31-19.

In the second match, Greg Pearson took on Bruce Murray for the remaining finals berth.

Wow! This was quite a game.

At about the half-way mark, the match was about even, and I recall a core of around 15-15 at one stage.

Shortly thereafter, Greg found an extra gear and established a nine-shot lead and I guess most were expecting a short ending.

Bruce struck back and started to reel Greg in and during what turned out to be the final end, Bruce was holding 3 shots to have the scores at 29-30.

With one shot left, Greg converted winning a great game 31-26.

The final next week will see Jeff Baker taking on Greg Pearson.

What a great game this will be!

Dear Virginia, NOW, if you had said your seven-year-old son was doing this to your five-year-old daughter, I would have explained it off as sibling shenanigans, but this is your husband. The man you vowed to love and honour in sickness and in health (until he lost the use of his faculties after two many longnecks), and the man who vowed to love you until death do you part (until your mother-in-law moved into the spare bedroom during the pandemic).

And now we have what feels to me to be the start of a War of the Roses movie.

So, his cold wet hands are innocent enough, but of course it can't stop at that. You have no choice but to retaliate, and so you do, in jest of course, sewing the arms of his shirts together, or, on a rainy day, putting multicoloured blobs of paint on his windscreen wipers to create colourful rainbows when he's in a rush to go to work. You know, those sweet little gestures that let him know you are still fun. The problem is, he will get back at you and take it up a notch, and very soon you'll be locking him in a sauna and turning his beloved dog into pate.

It can't last of course. This oneupmanship. So as much as it may kill you, maybe laugh off his icy hands and then look into his eyes and whisper, 'Game on, and it starts with tonight's dinner.'

I reckon he'll never do it again and your life will go back to its former state of marital bliss.

TUESDAY 4th August: AGM was held prior to bowls, Deyonne Page continues as President, Karen McPhie Secretary and Lynda Richards Treasurer. The Vice Presidents are Judi Polak and Lorraine Murphy.

Lorraine elected in place of Lynne Green who didn't stand for re-election. Match Committee Robyn Webster and Lyn Nightingale (at present), Selection Committee Maynie Roberts, Dot Dallas and Bette Saillard (at present). Social Committee Sheril Johnson and Robyn Beaumont (at present). Welfare Officer Kathie Rimmer. Following the AGM belated birthday celebrations (due to Covid 19) for 3 special ladies who celebrated "O" birthdays during lockdown.

Format for bowls, 5 games 3 bowls Triples, 12 ends. Jan Coomer, Bev Rhodes and Jill McBride were 6 all on the 6th end bowling against Jean Glover, Carol Hayden and Robyn Webster. In the finals, Ms Lowndes and Ms Cembala played Trevor Davies and Brenden Revell (Skip) and it was a very close game throughout.

Scores were locked at 14 all after 16 ends, and 17 all going into the final end.

Ms Lowndes and Ms Cembala then picked up three points to secure the final game.

Congratulations to Ms Lowndes and Ms Cembala on this great accomplishment.

In other bowls news, at the Club’s AGM, it was unanimously voted to make Brian Holdom a Life Member of Karuah RSL Bowling Club.

Mr Holdom has had many years of association with the Club, including playing Pennants and Championships.

He was presented his Life

SANDIE Lowndes and Pam Cembala teamed up to enter this year’s Karuah RSL Bowling Club Championship Pairs, making history on Sunday 2 August as the first ladies team to win the Club’s Major Pairs.

In fact, it’s believed that they are the first ladies team in the State to win a Major Pairs championship under the new membership structure which allows women to enter what were previously men’s championship events.

The membership of Karuah RSL Men’s Bowling Club voted earlier this year to follow the Bowls NSW initiative in changing to an ‘open gender’ membership policy, a move which allows women to join and play certain events with men, including Major Pairs.

Dave Austin, President of Karuah RSL Bowling Club, said, “This result represents a significant step for Karuah ladies to be part of the new structure of our Bowling Club, and let’s hope, helps us along the path for the amalgamation of Men’s and Ladies bowls in the future, as it is already the case in most other states.”
