The secret life of bats

BATS often get a bad name, but a group of local residents were given a more balanced view of flying foxes at a special twilight talk in Hawks Nest.

Seventeen people gathered round Lynda Stevenson of Myall Koala and Environment Group (MKEG) and Wildlife in Need of Care (WINC),

while overhead a cloud of grey headed and little red flying foxes flew to their nightly roosts.

Lynda explained how flying foxes were the main long-distant pollinators of plants and trees in the regeneration of native hardwood forests, scattering seeds during their flights.

“A single flying fox can scatter up to 60,000 seeds in one night,” she said.

“Think of them as big nocturnal bees.”

She admitted that when they could not get nectar, pollen or native fruits, pregnant and lactating females in particular might raid commercial or backyard fruit trees, making enemies by munching on fruit crops and orchards in their search for dinner.

This promises to be an exciting program and we will be able to report in more detail following the April meeting.

In captivity, flying foxes can live for 20 years but their life span in the wild is unknown as they are threatened by many things such as habitat destruction, increasing conflict with people and extreme weather events such as drought, fire and flood. Ravens, snakes, powerful owls, birds of prey, possums, goannas and cats kill and eat them.

She said flying foxes are known to carry Hendra virus which can be passed onto horses and then onto people who have been in close contact with an infected horse. There are no cases of the disease

Anyone who finds an injured bat is advised not to handle it, but to call the local wildlife rescue group, WINC on 1300 946 295.

Maureen’s efforts were central to many positive local outcomes including the building of the North Arm Cove Community Hall, supporting the Progress Association, producing the Cove News for 12 years, and convening International Women’s Day functions, now running for 22 years.

She shared her appreciation of formal recognition (as well as her passion for the Western Bulldogs AFL team) which includes the 1996 Australian Day Citizenship Award. the 2001 Centennial Medal for Community Service; the Great Lakes Council Active Seniors Award; and the 2010 Australia Day Order of Australia Medal for committed service over a long period of time.

These are words written by a 12 year old student studying at Bulahdelah School and read out by Jan Peeters, the Chair of the International Women’s Day (IWD) organising committee at North Arm Cove.

Around 90 community members from the Cove and nearby communities attended the stylish High Tea at the Community Hall, all to make a positive difference for girls and women around the world.

This year’s IWD theme is “Each for Equal”, with the proceedings pitched to inspire attendees to “challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.”

Jan used facts and figures to highlight the fact that global gender equality remains an ongoing challenge.

She cited recent UN data, stating, “137 women across the world are killed by a member of their own family every day with 650 million women and girls are married before age 18.”

Jan emphasised the importance of caring in order to have a lasting positive impact locally and globally.

Impact was a recurring theme, evident in the first keynote presentation by local legend, Maureen Kelly, OAM, now living in South Australia supported by close family.

Reflecting on a lifetime of community service (starting out as a ten pound pom), her anecdotes illustrated the importance of sustained

Joanne delivered a powerful and often sad insight into the daily challenges faced by girls and women living in the Kibera slums in Kenya.

Reflecting on her work with the Australian Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders organisation, Joanne stated, “Their lives are incredibly hard but they have purpose. They look out for each other.”

Bromeliads Blooming

By Sandra MURRAY STUNNING green foliage and tropical flowers flourish in the thousands in Ross and Dianne Smith’s extensive Bromeliad and Orchid garden located in Tea Gardens.

Bromeliads are a stunning range of exotic leafy plants that thrive in outdoor local conditions, including drier periods as they can store water.

The endless range of their striped and mottled green, pink, red or white foliage is fascinating and the mass display reminiscent of a prehistoric Jurassic Park.

Orchids are a colourful plant family, renown for beautiful symmetrical flowers and exquisite scents.

The local couple have been propagating both of these plants in their Tea Gardens nursery since 2000 but their shared passion goes back over 50 years.

Ross shared how it all started for him, recalling, “I was a young timber cutter and I came across a beautiful tiny but strongly scented orange flower in a tree I felled at Bells Mountain.”

The flower was a single Orange Bloom Orchid and

it sparked Ross’s lifelong fascination for the plants.

The couple have since collected over 11,000 Orchids and Bromeliads.

The Smiths’ propagate new plants from the pupplants that grow at the base and are usually best in pots.

They specialise in hybridisation, a breeding process that can take years with spectacular results.

Dianne informed NOTA that,” We have registered thousands of wonderful new varieties in Australia,

breeding for, and winning at local, National and International shows.”

Show season is looming with the Bromeliad Society of Queensland Show on 8-10 April at Bray Park, QLD, followed by the Bromeliad Australian Society Show on 9-10 May at Castle Hill, NSW. The Smiths have also attended several World Bromeliad Conferences and will be attending in 2021 in New Zealand.

Calming local panic buying: countering COVID-19

By Sandra MURRAY THE impact of Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 on Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and nearby communities has been evident on social media with concerns expressed about the virus, and the adverse impact of localised “panic buying” of toilet paper and other supplies.

During this time, it may be helpful to access information about COVID-19 from reliable sources including the Australian Government Department of Health and the NSW Health websites to help stay informed and calm.

The Australian Government advises that, “Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness caused by a new virus.

Symptoms range from a mild cough to pneumonia.

Some people recover easily, others may get very sick very quickly.

There is evidence that it spreads from person to person.

Good hygiene can prevent infection.”

This includes washing your hands often with soap and water, using a tissue and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and avoiding close contact with others, such as touching.

I first learned about their culture when visiting several countries in South America in 2008. Obviously these issues were ongoing as there was no trace of the Anasazi after 1300 AD.

and actions outlined in MidCoast Council’s Community Strategic Plan, and providing a comprehensive project budget that delivers solid value for money.

“We are looking to distribute donations in a fair and equitable way, and to provide support for projects that meet a genuine community need.”

Dear News Of The Area,

AS a permanent resident of Hawks Nest for thirty years I would like to voice my disapproval of the planned 220 site semi-permanent caravan park on the Mungo Brush Road (DA286/2020 247 Mungo Brush Road).

This development would see some pristine bushland and koala habitat between Hawks Nest and Mungo Brush National Park destroyed and could lead to further development of the area, to its detriment. The R2 zoning for this area states that it must maintain its rural character; this will not be the case with this development.

The two existing caravan parks in Hawks Nest had semi-permanent dwellings until recently and have been removed because they have become an eye-sore and not financially viable. Is another

caravan part needed in the area, considering that two exist in Hawks Nest, there are numerous camping sites at the National Park and camping/caravanning at the nearby Myall River Camp? A semi-permanent caravan village could become in years to come, as has happened already in Hawks Nest, a third world high density living area in a coastal/rural environment.

The road to Mungo Brush National Park is not in good repair and in its present state would not be adequate for the influx of visitors and permanent residents of the proposed caravan park. Will the infrastructure be in place for this proposed caravan park that appears to be more like a high density retirement village?

Our lakes and river systems in that area with its flora and fauna, particularly

the koala population, could be threatened by increased development. Will there be a guarantee that these will not be affected by a high-density living area?

There has been very little community consultation of this proposed development which will highly impact on our small community.

Progress for progress sake is no longer relevant in the 2020's. This development would lead to further subdivision of the area and turn our small, idyllic Hawks Nest into another Nelson Bay in 20/30 years' time.

The ancient paperbark trees of the Murroock Culture Centre and haunting guitar tunes played by Felicity Webb from Hunter River High School, provided an inspiring setting for the successful International Women’s Day (IWD) breakfast attended by 230 community members.

This year’s theme was “Each for Equal”, with the Monday morning program pitched to inspire people to “challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.”

Gloria Churchill, a young criminology graduate and a Tea Gardens local, participated for the first time and observed, “It was great to discover a community of women out there vying for each other’s success and equality.”

She had the opportunity to meet with the hosts, two motivated leaders, Meryl Swanson Federal MP, Member for Paterson, and Kate Washington State MP, Member for Port Stephens.

This is the third year the two leaders hosted the event, and their camaraderie was clear when they described themselves as, “honest, open and supportive of all their sisters.”

Meryl Swanson added, “This is the first year that International Women’s Day has been held in this wonderful cultural centre, with attendance numbers growing from 50 to 230.”

Kate Washington acknowledged strong women pioneers, sharing excerpts from a recently published book called Birubi Cemetery by Marilynne Cullen.

The morning opened with an Acknowledgement to Country by local Worimi women, Nadine Russell, a Murrook Board member and Shaytarna PingBuckshiram, an Irrawang High School Student.

Nadine called on all participants to, “listen, speak and share”.

Their warm welcome reflected the purpose of Murrook; to gather, sustain, protect and teach Aboriginal Culture to all people with an emphasis on Worimi culture being the land and people of this area.

The audience had the opportunity to hear from six future leaders from Hunter River, Irrawang and Tomaree High Schools.

Each shared insights into their career plans and who inspired them, with family clearly important to all.

Louise Simpson, a counsellor from the Yacaaba Centre, presented on the IWD theme, noting that, “Today is also the funeral for Hannah Clarke and her three children. It is important to end violence against women and children and for everyone to challenge and speak out against violence.”

This was echoed in the following presentation by Barbara Tobin, a case worker from the Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services, who stated, “Our service is committed to strengthening families, including supporting children who are often the silent victims of family violence.”

The Port Stephen’s Women of the Year was awarded to Taurie Lalor, the President of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group.

For fifty years, Taurie has assisted over 300 people with breast cancer, including men.

All funds raised were donated to the Yacaaba Centre, the Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services and the Murrook Culture Centre for women.

Triples Continue Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling

By The JAFFA 4 MARCH: Wednesday Nominated Triples continues its popularity with 60 players contesting the money.

Weather damage to the grass green limited play to only 4 rinks and in some cases, teams had to play the synthetic green twice.

Proven grass performers: Geoff Page, Bill Whalan and Greg Smith, with +13 won on a countback whilst on the synthetic, Kevin Barbie, Barry Goode and Bill Thrift also won with +13.

The Lucky Losers were Keith Wigman, Peter Cheney and Garry Porter.

7 March: The second round of the Newcastle District Pennant competition was played today with

the Grade 4 side travelling over to New Lambton and the remaining three sides playing at home.

It was to be a disappointing day for Grade 4 as they were beaten by a measly 4 shots on the master board and after they had won most ends.

The Chris Ross team had a low scoring 14 all draw, and the Stewart Dorahy side won by two shots.

The remaining team went down by 6. New Lambton won 5753.

There was good news at home however with the Grade 6 side also playing a New Lambton team.

The Danny Johnson side set up the 10-shot victory with a comprehensive 22-14 win and the Ron Webster side also recorded a nice 18-13 victory.

The Dave Benson four managed a 14-all draw and the remaining side lost by 8 shots.

Tea Gardens winning the master board, 63-56.

The fledgling Garde 7(2) side made some improvement on last week but still recorded another overall loss to Boolaroo, 47-76.

The one bright spot was a gutsy win by the Stewart Sturrock team 23-21 but the remaining two teams have much to do in improving their consistency.

Meet and Greet at the Hawks Nest club. Players were welcomed and given a gift bag including flyers promoting local businesses that supported the event.

Mondays’ event was played in extremely hot conditions but the ladies competing battled through the heat and posted some very good scores. Many players returned to the club on Monday night to enjoy the fashion parade, dinner and entertainment. All were very impressed with the great presentation by our club events coordinator and the meal. Thank you to Sonya and George.

Having the club ‘buzzing’ and seeing 190 ladies dancing, singing and laughing created a great atmosphere.

Ladies played on Tuesday in much cooler conditions and thoroughly enjoyed our amazing golf course. The players commented on how great it was having our men volunteers on the course as spotters and raking bunkers. Many said it would not happen at their home clubs.

On Tuesday evening prior to Presentation the raffle draw was held with prizes donated by local businesses. This was very well received with approximately $2000 being raised for the Westpac Helicopter appeal. We are very appreciative of the local businesses that continually support us and the community. The names of those who supported the Classic are on the Hawks Nest Golf clubs’ website.

An event like this would not be successful without help. The ladies committee put in many hours to ensure its smooth running. The support from the staff in the pro shop, led by Andrew our golf Professional, had many positive comments from our visiting players. Praise was given by all players to Ben, the Course Superintendent, and the green staff who ensured that the course was presented immaculately.

Much of the work began before the sun was up and continued well into the night. We appreciate the effort of the cleaners, bar staff, the many volunteers and the very supportive office staff.

For three years my mother-in-law has been making our family a Sunday night vegetarian casserole and I’ve just found out she’s been using beef stock cubes all that time to give it a bit of flavour. I can’t believe she has done this, knowing I am a vegetarian.

THIS is a really tricky one. I’ve just done a bit of a mental calculation on the amount of time your mother-in-law has saved you by cooking Sunday night meals for three years and that is a pretty admirable effort. This could have been a completely innocent addition. I mean, do beef stock cubes even have beef in them?

Maybe they are a bit like the humble frankfurt, or a piece of devon, or a crab stick. The sludge of ingredients that makes up these products could hardly be called food. Perhaps a beef stock cube actually is vegetarian. I’m going to put you out of your misery and have a look.

Ok, Mrs KR. The great news is that beef stock cubes are largely made up of anything but beef. They have salt, wheat flour, maize starch, flavour enhancers, colour, yeast extract, vegetable oil, sugar, lactic acid, onion powder and mineral salt – I mean, how could one even begin to call something with those ingredients a beef anything? They sound positively vegetarian to me . . . oh, wait a minute – there’s something called beef extract in there as well. That could mean anything really. Let me see . . .

Right, we have a problem. Beef extract is a bone, hide, skin, skeletal muscle, connective tissue combo. That’s not vego at all. In fact it is sounding very Silence of the Lambs. I have a feeling your mother-in-law has been slowly poisoning you. I can see her now, grinning as she brings the casserole to your door in an unassuming Tupperware container. Her ScoMo smirk when you say it smells absolutely delicious. Her coy wink when she tells you it’s the secret ingredient that makes it so special.

You’re going to have to bring this to a head, I’m afraid, and tell her the game is up. There are only losers in this sad tale of subterfuge and Sunday night starvation. I feel you may never come back from this.

Additionally, climate change increases risk and risk is a major factor insurers consider when insuring properties and this could well impact the insurable value of your home, leading to a property value reduction of 20% or more over the life of a standard mortgage. FIVE students represented Bulahdelah Central School recently at the Port Stephens Primary Zone Swimming Carnival, held at Tomaree Aquatic Centre.

Up against hundreds of competitors from 23 schools across the area, the Students swam exceptionally well and recorded some very competitive times.

Year 6 student Chilali BagginsCupitt had a brilliant swim in the 50 metres breaststroke and qualified for the Hunter Regional Carnival to be held at the Lambton Pool in Newcastle.

Chilali, along with fellow competitors Lasey Baggins-Cupitt, Indie Hope, Mia Hope and Delilah Newlin, were selected in the Zone Team after swimming qualifying times at the School carnival.

They are to be commended on their positive sportsmanship and outstanding participation throughout the day.

Year 6 competitor Mia Hope said, “It was a great experience to swim in the competitive races against lots of people from different schools. This level of competition has helped me improve my abilities and confidence in the pool.”
