NAIDOC Week celebrations got off to an early start in the Myall Coast last week with local schools alive with Indigenous song, dance and culture.

In Bulahdelah, St Joseph’s Primary School students were joined by the Wandana Aboriginal group for a cultural activity day which included a Smoking Ceremony and creating a contemporary Aboriginal mural.

Wandana CEO Brian Cook said the painting is about celebrating the story of the land and its people.

The funding boost for Tea Gardens’ Police came during the Premier’s whistlestop tour of the north coast in June during which she announced multi-million dollar projects for roads and hospitals from Raymond Terrace to Forster.

“The Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest community sent a clear message to the Government about the importance of their Police Station,” State MP for Port Stephens, Kate Washington said.

“Premier Berejiklian tried to quell the community concern with a large headline announcement, but they’ve failed to deliver at the first hurdle.”

Ms Washington went on to add “The Government should stop seeking headlines and actually deliver outcomes for our

community.”

“It’s an embarrassing million dollar con job conveniently made nine months out from an Election.”

“This Government has a poor track record in keeping their promises in Port Stephens,” Ms

Washington told News Of The Area.

“In 2015 they promised to fully duplicate Nelson Bay Road by 2019, but work hasn’t even started and now they’re only upgrading a roundabout.”

News Of The Area asked for an explanation from the Premier’s Department in regards to the dramatic cut in funding but had still to receive a response at the time of going to print.

Call Out for Showgirls WITH the Bulahdelah Showgirl competition fast approaching, the Show Society is encouraging young ladies to sign up for this year’s event.

The contest is open to women between the ages of 18 and 25 with the aim of finding young Ambassadors for the local area and beyond.

The winner will go on to represent Bulahdelah in the Zone competition, with the chance of being selected to take part in the State finals at the 2019 Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Bulahdelah Show Society President Gary Gooch said the competition is about finding a person most suited to represent young rural women in NSW. “It’s not a beauty contest,” he said.

In Re Estate Jerrard, deceased [2018] NSWSC 781 an indigenous young man died in a motor accident without a Will and with no spouse or children.

Superannuation death benefits were payable into his estate. His parents were his closest relatives. The deceased had little contact with his father and lived with his mother. His mother made a claim for the whole of his estate to be distributed to her.

She relied on Part 4.4 Succession Act 2006 (Part 4.4.) which provides that a person may apply to the Court for a distribution order under “the laws, customs, traditions and practices of the Indigenous community or group to which an Indigenous deceased belonged” (customary law). She argued that according to customary law she should receive the entire estate.

The father opposed the order.

This was the first case to consider competing claims within a deceased’s Indigenous community. The mother

relied on evidence from Indigenous elders and letters from persons such as the Chief Executive Officer of the Local Aboriginal Land Council to inform the Court of customary law.

Judge Lindsay had concerns about the Court’s ability to independently verify the evidence but was prepared to accept it for two reasons: firstly, there was no serious challenge to the evidence and secondly, the Court is required to determine if the finding of customary law leads to a “just and equitable” result informed by succession law and not just limited to customary law.

The Court determined the father should receive a lump sum amounting to roughly 11% of the estate. This case is noteworthy not only because of its treatment of customary law but also because it is becoming more common for relatively substantial assets to be available to an estate from superannuation death benefits.

As a result more people should consider making wills.

The Toy Ladies of Tea Gardens

IT’S been in town for eight years, but the call has gone out to the community to renew its friendship with the Tea Gardens ‘Toy Library’.

The ‘Toy Library’ operates just like your more traditional Library but instead of books, it lends toys games and puzzles.

It’s run by a dedicated group of volunteers.

“The lady who was here this morning had a new baby and she borrowed one of these bumbos,” Lissa Macilquham said.

“She said it saved her $100.”

“The beauty of the Toy Library is that borrowers can save money because they’re not having to buy toys that may only be used for a short time before the child outgrows them,” Lissa said.

“It works for Grandparents too,” said Leonie Keipert.

“We may not see our Grandchildren for 6 months and the next time they visit

Man charged with MURDER after link with a car crash near Bulahdelah POLICE have charged a man with murder after a woman’s body was found following a house fire at Raymond Terrace.

Emergency services were called to the home on Rosemount Drive on Saturday 7 July (12:30am), after reports of an explosion and a fire.

Once firefighters extinguished the blaze, they located the body of

a 76-year-old woman inside the home.

It was treated as suspicious.

Police linked the alleged crime with a car collision, some 50klm away, that occurred within an hour of the blaze.

At about 1.20am, in the early hours of the morning, police responded to reports a Nissan X-Trail collided with a truck on the Pacific Highway, about 5km

north of Bulahdelah.

The driver of the Nissan was taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard suffering serious injuries.

On Monday 9 July, Police charged the 69-year-old with murder (DV), and destroying property with intent to endanger life.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 6 September.

Warming those in need

WINTER is the toughest time of the year for those in need.

But the Tea Gardens Baptist Church and the local Red Cross are doing their best to keep people in crisis warm and cosy.

At the Church’s recent ‘Skills’ morning, a group of local ladies along residents from Peter Sinclair Gardens Aged Care Facility helped make up some much needed donations of knitted goods.

From scarves and beanies to blankets and teddies all were gratefully accepted by Red Cross President Jennifer Wenham.

“Thank you to those of you who have contributed to this project by donating yarn for us,” Ruth Calcutt said.

“The next time at ‘Skills Day’ we will be again working

towards another worthwhile charity when we will be

again packing shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse,” Ruth said.

Now vandals are being blamed for destroying the viewing platform at Winda Woppa.

Over the past 12 months a number of planks had gone missing, but now the platform is definitely not negotiable.

Ken Garrad, President of the Winda Woppa Association said, “Last week one of our members was passing it and was shocked to find most of the planking had been stolen and apparently burned in an open fire nearby.”

Along with the remains of the campfire, rubbish had been dumped and the remains of a tree sawn down to its stump.

Police believe the damage may have been

caused over the long weekend in June.

“If you were in town for the long weekend you would be aware that there was quite an influx of holiday makers,” Snr Constable Dave Coyle said.

“It truly was a busy three days.”

“I am very aware of your frustration and disappointment at the damage to the platform. It is something I won’t tolerate.”

“In relation to the fishing equipment being boats, trailers etc being left on the beach, I have liaised with the Chairman of the Commercial Fishermen’s Co Op Newcastle who is going to arrange for the items to be removed by their owners,” Police Officer Coyle said.

The Winda Woppa Association has contacted MidCoast Council in regards to repairing the platform.

The Hornets scored first in the second half 5minutes in with a successful convertion to take the score to Hinton 10 Karuah 6. Then about half way through the second half they were in again with another converted try 16/6.

The Roos Kane Chisholme was next to score 5 minutes later Karuah 10 Hinton 16.

Then the Hornet countered about 3 minutes later with 2 quick tries to take the score to Hornets 26 Roos 10.

Mr TG, Nelson Bay Dear Mr TG, ART is such a subjective thing. For every person who loves Monet, another loves Picasso. Some people have edgy prints hanging in their home, others have outof-proportion dolphins and frangipanis.

Some people don’t like art at all and instead have 256 photos of their family members (dressed in white, staring whimsically at rock formations) hanging on their walls.

Each to their own.

I must admit, I’m not big on the graffiti murals, but they are certainly better than tags or some offensive scrawl that manages to combine sweet Millie from down the road with acts that would make Dr Dre blush. The one positive is that these people are trying to express themselves through the written from (though they really should learn how to spell).

I love your creeping vine idea. Absolutely love it. What a shame the local council isn’t big on green space. Instead, they seem to favour glowing white multi-storey developments that will only encourage our talented local artists to spread their incoherent messages in every nook and cranny of this coastal getaway.

Women’s Bowls Result Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

TUESDAY 3rd July: A break in the wet weather thankfully allowed some bowling today. A game of 3 bowls Pairs 21 ends and 3 games of 3 bowls Triples, 18 ends. Sheril Johnson playing “swinger lead”. Unfortunately heavy rain caused play to be discontinued before the set number of ends was played.

Results are as follows: Ingrid Luck, Dorothy Thompson and Sandra Leisemann 17 v Lynne Nightingale, Carolyn Bywater and Lynda Richards 10, 15 ends played. After 14 ends Christine Fossey, Jo Younghusband and Karen McPhie scored 28 v Judi Polak, Lily Smith and Jill McBride 9.

A good win for Bev Stephens and Maynie Roberts 23 v Bette Saillard and Loretta Baker 8, 20 ends bowled.

Thirteen ends bowled in the game where Sheril Johnson played for both sides. Sheril, Pam Gilchrist and Carol Hayden 15 v Sheril, Francis

Betar and Julie Kennedy 14.

Winners on the day were Ingrid, Dorothy and Sandra determined by a “blind draw”.

Jill McBride was the lucky raffle winner. Many thanks to Myall Bistro and Café for their donation of the raffle prize.

Wednesday 4th July: The Annual General Meeting for TGWBC. A good attendance of members, great to see Bev Rhodes out and about again. Most of the committee remain in their present positions, Robyn Webster continues as Club President and Karen McPhie Secretary.

Pam Gilchrist accepted the Vice President position, as well as Welfare Officer.

Prior to the meeting Robyn Webster presented Loyalty Badges (10 years of bowling) to Robyn Beaumont,Dorothy Dallas and Carolyn Bywater (absent).

By The JAFFA 4 JULY: Despite the indifferent weather today 45 bowlers turned out for the Wednesday Nominated Triples.

Constant drizzle marred the first game but play continued nonetheless on both greens.

Four teams managed to win both games but it was the team of Paul Bell, Col Saillard, Greg Smith and Dave Perry took the money with 58 points.

Daryl Martin was the winner of the Myall Bistro voucher.

6 July: Friday Open Pairs attracted a good field of 20 players today and it was great to welcome Bob Skewes back to bowls after an enforced layoff.

Bob paired with Lon Richards to claim the bragging rights for the week.

7 July: Round 9 of the Newcastle District Saturday Pennants was played today with the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 4 side taking on Mayfield at home whilst Grade 6 enjoyed a bye.

The match was played in very trying conditions with a strong, cold southwesterly wind playing havoc on the green.

It is pleasing to report that the home side enjoyed a close win defeating Mayfield by 8 shots 66-58.

The Jeff Baker four won 26-16, the Keith Smith combination won 23-13 and despite dropping an 8, the equivalent to a hole-in-one in golf, the Barry Drayton four retrieved a 7 to eventually go down 17-29.

Next week sees the last round of the Pennant competition for the year with Grade 4 playing away at East Maitland and Grade 6 seeking a revenge game against East Maitland at home.

8 July: The second round of the Club Championship Triples competition was played today with the cold south-westerly winds continuing to make play unpleasant for players.

The Stewart Sturrock team were out bowled and conceded defeat at the 19 end to the Barry Drayton trio.

They lost 11-33.

The Ron James side had a narrow 18-16 win over the Danny Johnson three.

The Keith Smith team ran away to a 14-0 lead against the Dave Perry side until a run of three 4 pointers saw Dave’s side back in the game.

They drew level at 14-14 at the 13th end but that is where it ended for them with the Keith Smith side consolidating over the closing stages to win 24-17.

In the remaining game the Jeff Baker three were fast out of the blocks to establish an early 7 point lead over the Ben Brown trio but this was soon reigned in and the scores were level at the 10th.

140 v LTP 60. What can I say? Thanks to our social committee Dale Winter, Ingrid Luck, Bette Saillard and the other ladies who helped out on the day. Thanks to Myall Café and Bistro who catered for lunch, it just completed a perfect day.

District Competitions: Congratulation to Robyn Webster and Elizabeth Kelly on their progress in the Seniors Pairs. These two ladies have managed to progress to Round 3 of this event defeating teams from Soldiers Point and Raymond Terrace.

Unfortunately Bette Saillard and Lynne Green had to withdraw from this competition.

Robyn Beaumont and Kayelene Pearson won against Cardiff in the Open division and progress to the next round.

Results from these games will be posted in the next issue.

Kayelene Pearson and Robyn Beaumont (our district representative bowlers), bowled for Newcastle District against Lake Macquarie District in the annual Friendship Trophy event on Friday 6th July. Newcastle District managed 4 wins and 3 losses. Unfortunately Lake Macquarie were the winners of the trophy 138 v Newcastle 129.

From there on the pressure continued with the Ben leading his team to a close 22-19 win.

In the semi-finals to be played next Sunday the Ron James three will play the Barry Drayton side and the Ben Brown team will face the Keith Smith team.

Spectators are in for a treat!

In other news: As the Nota is distributed next Wednesday, the Club will be promoting the Mark Hughes Foundation “beanie” day and to coincide with the State Of Origin game to be played that night.

So far there has been great support for this very worthwhile cause and all proceeds will go directly to support the Foundation.
