School Principal Mark Clemson said, “It is absolutely fantastic to have our students return to full time on-school site learning.”

Hawks Nest Golf Club reopens

By Ashley CHRYSLER HAWKS Nest Golf Club is set to re-open to non-members and visitors on Thursday, 11 June, as restrictions in NSW continue to ease.

Greg Acret, General Manager of Hawks Nest Golf Club, said, “The fact that we’ve been allowed to continue playing golf when other sports were shut down was a good outcome for the Club and our golfing members.”

Mr Acret said it has taken this time-off as an opportunity to invest in a $120,000 renovation.

“We’ve taken the opportunity to have a massive clean up and do things such as painting the offices, renovating some of the toilets, replacing the carpet through the Clubhouse, and more.

“We are really pleased with the results and our members and visitors are going to notice a huge transformation of the Club when they return.”

Mr Acret said that with the re-opening comes certain restrictions to help protect patrons.

MidCoast Council cancels bulk waste removal for 2020 due to COIVD-19 concerns

The area that in her opinion if the bulk waste collection was to be cancelled the Council should offer residents an alternative.

Mrs Ellis said, “If we have to take it to the tip ourselves we should be given a discount or allocate days in the week where we can take it for free.”

Amy Hill the Waste Programme Coordinator for the MidCoast Council explained the reasons behind the decision to cancel, and how the bulk waste removal differs from the weekly curbside rubbish collection regarding the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

She said, “MidCoast Council's waste collection contractor JR Richards & Sons not

only provide a bulk waste collection service to MidCoast Council, but also provide the service to other Councils within NSW and collection dates are scheduled twelve to eighteen months in advance.”

“A minimum of two workers are required to undertake the physical collection of bulk waste items to meet Work Health and Safety guidelines.”

Because of this, Ms Hill advised that there were concerns from the contractor that the current method of collecting bulk items

When asked if there was potential for the decision to be reversed now restrictions are being eased or if an alternative will be provided to residents Ms. Hill replied, “Bulk waste collection is scheduled in advance and unfortunately Council is unable to reschedule another collection during 2020.”

“A decision to provide an alternate arrangement such as free waste disposal will be made pending the current situation and in conjunction with the NSW State Government advice and recommendations.”

The recent east coast low has resulted in changes and movement in the sand throughout the Myall and Port Stephens region.

THE recent east coast low has resulted in changes and movement in the sand throughout the Myall and Port Stephens region..

Across the Port, the Fingal Spit which was once vegetated, for the moment does not join Fingal Island to the mainland making crossing the spit extremely dangerous.

Lives have been lost on the spit crossing and current conditions make a crossing ill advised.

Further inland a large banksia at Corlette’s Conroy Park has been lost as a result of erosion of the bank and one of the Norfolk Island Pines has a large section of its root system exposed.

Landcare volunteer Margaret Wilkinson is devastated that we have lost another tree.

She and others locally have been lobbying for

more sandbagging and a more permanent solution to erosion at Conroy Park.

Severe weather events are reshaping our coastline.

John Simpson holds a science degree and has worked in coastal management for 35 years, he is a local property owner who has a wealth of experience in sea level and climate change issues.

Mr Simpson told News Of The Area, “The sea level is rising; exactly what that rise is in Port Stephens I am not exactly sure in Newcastle it is 50-60mm; there is a standing rule about coastal recession that in a static environment like the Bay, with residual sand masses, that a rise in water level will result in a corresponding land recession of 150 times the height of the rise.

“A one centimetre rise in sea level will effectively see a 1.5m advance in shore recession, so a 30cm rise

would see a three metre shore loss.”

“We are seeing the incremental change in water level to create a new stable shoreline – this typically happens during storm surges such as the East Coast Low and the tails of cyclones,” he said.

Mr Simpson believes that the best information available on rising sea levels predicts a rise of .6 a metre by the year 2100.

If your business is no longer operating from owneroccupied premises or you are a landlord where the tenant has ceased to occupy the building, remember to liaise with your insurance broker or your insurer. An insurer sees a vacant building to be at greater risk and exclusions to the policy are likely to mean that you will have no insurance cover for standard risks when the building has been unoccupied for more than a certain period of time (usually 30 or 60 continuous days).

What is meant by “unoccupied” can be sometimes unclear and the Courts have been known to say that this is a matter of “fact and degree” which must be determined when examining the facts in the context of a particular premises since different premises

have different patterns of occupancy. In the COVID-19 context, therefore, is attending the premises once every couple of days to collect mail sufficient or does occupation require significantly more?

Cases suggest that this will not be sufficient and whilst continuous physical presence during business hours is not necessary, occupation does involve an element of control over the premises so as, for example, to be in a position to prevent the intrusion of strangers. Overall, therefore, this is a reminder to check your insurance policy and make sure the premises remain insured. Consider what steps you can take to avoid an increase in premiums.

Community Conversation not Face to Face this time

IT'S time for MidCoast Council’s next round of Community Conversations, however given the current COVID-19 situation Council is looking at different ways to connect with our communities.

This has been a common theme over the past 12 weeks, and while restrictions are now easing and some of our face-to-face services reopening, Council will continue to follow the advice of State and Federal Government in relation to antigathering and social distancing requirements.

This means Council won’t be coming out in person for the Conversation this time, but read on for an outline of some of the actions Council have addressed in your community since the last meet.

For Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest and surrounding area:

· An application for grant funding was made in December, which if successful will see the Hawks Nest boat ramp upgraded. Among other things the scope involves replacing the existing jetty and pontoon to align with the boat ramp for improved access. We expect to hear about the outcome of our application in the coming months. · Bike signs such as those you requested for the Singing Bridge will be addressed as part of our Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan / Bike Plan. The draft plan will soon be open for your feedback. · Street sweeper continues to visit Tea Gardens each fortnight as part of a cyclical program across the region. · A review of traffic usage on Pindimar Road has been completed and the data will become part of the process used to prioritise roadworks across the region. · A feasibility analysis for a hydrotherapy pool was completed last year, leading to the decision to instead seek funding to upgrade the existing pool. The future plans will focus on features such as improved disability access at entry and into the pool, disability compliant toilets/showers/change rooms, and installing additional heating and wind breaks. Consultation with the local community will be part of the planning process. · Feedback on options for the upgrade of Hawks Nest Community Centre has just closed (29 May), Council are now assessing submissions to understand what you’d like to see implemented.

Council spokesperson said, “While we have provided updates on just a few of the topics discussed during our last conversation, our teams are continuing to address your specific questions and concerns, along with the seven priority areas for Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.”

“These include investigating the option of a hydrotherapy pool, improving local roads, community hall, boat ramp upgrades, beautification, walkways and cycleways, and signage.”

For Bulahdelah and surrounding area:

· The disused truck stop at Wootton (Wattley Hill Road/Wootton Way) has now been cleaned up, however please note Council sometimes use this area as a temporary stockpile site when roadworks are taking place nearby. · Works to improve Wattley Hill Road are scheduled to take place in June/July, starting at the end of the seal at the eastern end and extending west to the small bridge. You also asked about sealing Bombah Point Road, but at this time Council have been unable to add this

We are in the third decade of the third millennium, and living in the midst of a Second Industrial Revolution that is changing the way people live and work forever. And TGHN has to change to accommodate that changing world – or die as a community.

My career in the oil industry gave me the opportunity to live and work in many countries – and to me TGHN closely resembles the barrier island communities in Virginia and the Carolinas of the East Coast of the USA. They too have riverside/ lakeside/ocean beach communities.

Many of those communities have developed economically using tourism, usually with a golf course as the principal attraction. But the developments have always been sympathetic to their heritage, READING: Psalm 119: 105 - “Thy Word is a lamp unto me feet and a light unto my path.”

MIDCOAST Council Libraries’ online author events continue with Karen Turner and Annie Seaton joining local audiences this month.

“Our author events have been so popular and audiences are loving being able to connect with these talented authors from the comfort of their own homes,” said Chris Jones, MidCoast Council Libraries Manager.

“June’s lineup is really great. We had Tanya Heaslip on Wednesday 3 June, and over the next two weeks we’re welcoming Karen Turner and Annie Seaton to join our audience online to discuss their new books.”

Both Karen and Annie are award winning authors, and these events are a great way for those joining in to learn about the writing process, what it takes to become a published author, inspiration for storylines and much more.

Karen’s novel ‘Stormbird’ is set in war-torn England in 1941 and tells the story of an unexpected relationship that builds between a British war widow and a German fighter pilot, shot down and in hiding, despite their countries’ bitter differences.

In this talk with Karen, hear

about raising awareness of the need to preserve the pristine areas that surround us.

Come along and listen to Annie describe how the series began, the ten girls who feature as the heroines in each of the ten books, how the series explores some topical social issues and reaffirms our belief in friendship.

“I love the way these zoom author talks have allowed a lot of people who may not have come along to an event in our libraries before to be able to join in the fun too,” added Chris.

“And it’s a less formal setting for the authors so we’re finding that they are really comfortable and able to engage in a totally different way.”

Karen’s other works include ‘Torn’, ‘Inviolate’, and an eclectic book of short stories called ‘All That and Everything’.

Karen’s latest novel, Stormbird, was written as the final instalment in the Torn series but can also be read independently.

Annie wanted to be an author from the minute her mother took her into a library when Annie was four-years-old. She fell in love with books, and her first career choice was to be a librarian, of course.

As well as her well-loved library post positions, she’s had a few different careers, before she started in the public education system as a teacher librarian, and worked her way up to principal and then retired (young!) to take up full time writing.

Doors opened for Karuah RSL

By Ashley CHRYSLER KARUAH RSL has re-opened as of Monday, 5 June, under tight Government restrictions.

Ross Parr, General Manager of Karuah RSL said, “We’re excited to re-open and allow up to 170 people to enter at a time.

“We’ll also have allocated doors for entry and exit.”

Mr Parr also stated that they will be checking each person’s temperature at the door prior to entry, and those whose temperatures are above 38 degrees celsius will be refused entry.

Mr Parr continued, “Those

entering will be required to apply hand sanitiser and to swipe their own membership cards in the reward centre.

“Non-members will need to scan their own driver’s licenses at the sign in desk, in addition to providing their phone numbers.

“Those requiring Keno or TAB can use the self-serve terminals, or ask the table service staff for a ticket who can then place a bet for them at the terminal,” said Mr Parr.

The courtesy bus will only operate on Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm and will do pick up and drop offs in Karuah only.

LOCAL Benchmark on Booner owner, Kowan Reynolds, says that the new 50-person limit restrictions implemented from 1 June have been a welcomed relief.

“We had to turn away a lot of people who wanted to come in for a meal with the 10-person limit.

“Customers were getting really frustrated and so were we, turning away so much business.

“We’re so happy that restrictions are now allowing

like salt and pepper shakers or cutlery on the tables.”

Since dine-in restrictions came into effect, Mr Reynolds has been working on renovations in the restaurant, including new tabletops and booths, all built by himself.

“We have new booths in the front room and back room, so we can now seat an extra 50 customers in the back,” he said.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming back a lot of our loyal customers as well as hopefully some new ones, and think everyone will love the changes we’ve made to the place.”

Students and National Reconciliation Week “THE National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2020 theme reinforces that we all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation. In playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures,” Karen Mundine Chief Executive Officer of Reconciliation

In 2020 Reconciliation Australia marks 20 years of operations.

Reflecting on the last two decades Ms Mundine said it is timely to reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation.

“When we come together to build mutual respect and understanding, we shape a better future for all Australians.”

Much has happened since the early days of the people’s movement for reconciliation, including greater acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights to land and sea; understanding of the impact of government policies and frontier conflicts; and an embracing of stories of Indigenous success and contribution.

we have also learnt how to reset relationships based on respect. While much has been achieved, there is still more work to be done, “ Ms Mundine said.

Australia celebrates NRW from 27 May to 3 June every year. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the 1967 Referendum acknowledging Aboriginal

The upgrades to Lionel Morten Oval now provide amenities for all genders and abilities creating an accessible and inclusive space meeting state sports association standards and improving inclusion and health and wellbeing within the community.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer recognises the positive impact these upgrades will have on the local community.

“The new facilities will enhance

the lives of Karuah locals now and into the future by creating a modern, inclusive and accessible space for all — reducing barriers of gender and physical ability.
