FOLK from our community, residents from both Peter Sinclair Gardens and Estia Health meet every fourth Friday of the month at the Baptist Church, for a craft and woodworking morning with participants taking home a newly learned skill.

Twice a year, the group holds a “craft giving morning” and in June the group’s focus was on the Red Cross with donations of hand knitted blankets, trauma teddies and baby rabbits all kindly given to our hardworking, local Red Cross representative, Jennifer Wenham.

News of the Area asked Jennifer about how the donations would be distributed and she said, “All

significant increase in truck traffic in recent times, it is because the National Parks and Wildlife Service commenced construction work in May to relocate a 3.2 kilometre section of the Mungo Brush Road away from the Dark Point Dune.

This road is the principal vehicle access for visitors, commercial fishers, tourism operators, emergency services and the local community to the south eastern section of Myall Lakes National Park thus linking the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest and Bulahdelah townships.

Currently, the road adjoins the Dark Point Dunes which is a 250 hectare Aboriginal mobile sand dune that extends south for 5.5 kilometres in the Myall Lakes National Park which is moving inland at a rate of 3.3 to 5.9 metres per year and it is envisaged that the dune will pass onto or over the road, making it impassable to vehicles.

National Parks and Wildlife Service identified that by relocating the road, the Aboriginal culturally significant Dark Point dunes would be protected.

As the project progresses, locals will see a temporary increase in heavy vehicle traffic through Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest to allow road materials including gravel, culverts and fencing to be transported to the construction site.

Myall Lakes National Park will remain open to visitors who use the camp grounds as the road construction has been scheduled outside of busy holiday times thus minimizing disruption to the local community, commercial operators and visitors.

Following the construction, where possible, suitable material from the old road will be reused to build the new road with the old road landscaped and rehabilitated.

HOGES looks at his best in the huge photograph adorning the wall in the Tea Gardens Pub, but there has been much discussion about where and when the photograph was taken.

The photograph was given to Hotel's owner Ben Hanson who was told it had been taken in the Tea Gardens Hotel.

“It’s a fabulous photograph. Beautifully taken.” said Ben. “It really is an iconic Australian image. I couldn’t resist enlarging and framing it.”

Mr Hanson said, “It has caused serious debate even down to the size of the tiles at the bar.”

Is it a photograph taken in our town?

Did Hoges ever visit the area?

Did Paul Hogan do the Hoges show in Tea Gardens? If so, when?

If it was taken in Tea Gardens Pub, Ben is looking to identify the men in the background at the bar. That will be the only way the argument can be put to rest.

Early Bastille Day

NINETY three guests eager to celebrate Bastille Day attended an all French luncheon on Sunday in the Auditorium at the Grange in Tea Gardens.

Guests were certainly in the spirit arriving at the function after donning themselves in anything from their wardrobes that represented the colours of France.

The Grange Auditorium had been transformed into everything French with local caterer, Heidi Davison, serving a

sumptuous three course meal to guests which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Village resident, Laurie Bailey who coordinated the day, told News of the Area, “It was an absolutely fantastic day with ninety-three in attendance.

“I was hoping that the numbers would be around sixty but was astounded when the numbers kept growing.”

“We had lucky door prizes and the highlight was when everyone joined in to sing the French National Anthem,” Ms Bailey said.

In the recent Family Law Review released by the ALRC, it has been recommend that s.60CC of the Family Law Act, which outlines how a Court determines the best interests of a child, be “slimmed down” from 16 considerations – broken into primary and additional considerations – to just 6.

The 6 proposed considerations focus on safety of children and carers; views of the child; needs of the child; benefit of the child of maintaining a relationship with both parents and those who are significant to the child; ability of the carers to care for the child and their willingness to seek support to do so; and anything else relevant to the particular child.

The current parenting provisions of the Family

Law Act has been described by at least one judge as “practically impenetrable for the average person”.

As such, the rationale behind the proposal is to simplify the process and the considerations, so it can be better understood by the people affected by it.

In practical terms, the issues which the Court would consider under the recommendation would not change remarkably from those currently considered; but it would revamp the way in which the Court’s reasoning is framed. In our view, the recommendation would allow the legislation to better address the diverse types of families involved in the family law systems, and various circumstances of those families.

Various students from other schools – Food Technology

activities that enhanced their understanding of Science.

With Natalie Stanfield, students observed hydrogen gas exploding and learned how elements are important in making up the Universe and allowing space travel, in out Rockets to Outer Space lesson.

Students also tested their own Tea Bag Rockets. They ignite empty tea bags and watching how hot air rises as the bag burns causing them to lift off at the last moment.

Every student enjoyed this so much, they had to do it multiple times! Our lovely cleaner didn’t even mind the mess it made, as the students seemed to be having so much fun.

Pam Gollan had them for Back Down to Earth looking at making Clouds in Beaker and explaining how heating and cooling cycles make our weather patterns.

Ms Drenkhahn said, “Students also created Rainbows by splitting white light with a prism. This shows how the natural phenomenon occurs after rain as water droplets in the air make natural prisms to split light in to the beautiful, easily recognisable wonders in the sky.”

ON Tuesday, 4 June and Thursday, 20 June saw Bulahdelah Central School host an inaugural Stage 5 Future Focus Learning days.

These days involved students from our Myall Learning Community schools - Tea Gardens, Booral, Bungwahl, Coolongolook as well as Bulahdelah.

Students participated in a range of activities which focused on three technology disciplinesFood Technology, Wood Technology and STEM. Students rotated around each technology discipline throughout the day and experienced making small projects such as a CO2 powered race car, a laser cut and engraved name badge and a small woodwork pencil holder.

Council taking a shot at Blood Challenge MIDCOAST Council employees are rolling up their sleeves and taking part in this year’s Councils Blood Challenge.

The challenge is a nation-wide event for all local Government and ACT Government agencies and is aimed at supporting the Australian Red Cross Blood Service through their most difficult time of year – winter.

“Due to many regular donors coming down with either a cold or flu, donation rates drop drastically across the winter months, but of course the need for blood is still there,” explained MidCoast Council’s General Manager, Adrian Panuccio.

“We’re really proud to be doing our bit to help this vital, lifesaving service and urge others around the community to do the same.”

Last year’s Councils Blood Challenge saw 5422 donations received in the 12 weeks of the competition, meaning up to 16,266 lives were saved.

The challenge begins on 1 July and finishes on 30 September.

Nominated Triples Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

13 July The forecast was that the rain was to stay away today but, alas that was not the case and players competing in the first round of the Club Championship Triples competition had some tough conditions to contend with as intermittent showers marred their game.

It was to be a close contest as it went down to the last bowl on the last end.

The team of; Barry Drayton, Doug Andrews and Ron Webster won that to edge out; Rob Young, Gary Wynne and Stewart Sturrock 2017.

10 July:

The usual Wednesday Nominated Triples attracted a field of 46 players today with 10 teams of Triples and 4 teams of Fours.

Members welcomed Graham O’Donnell from Tura Beach to our Club.

The afternoon game suited the winners on the heavy grass.

They were; Peter Gurney, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson.

The Fours team of; Brian McPhie, Bob Weir, Dave Perry and Bill Thrift won on the synthetic green.

14 July In Sunday Bowls this morning, and after a heavy fog, a terrific day emerged and 8 bowlers took to the green in a game of 3 bowl fours.

The eventual winners being Pam Gilchrist , Kevin McInerney, Tracey Irwin, and Tim Grant with a score of 9 to 4.

The beautiful weather continued in the afternoon when the Club Championship Triples competition resumed with the quarter-final round.

The successful Ron Webster team staged a late comeback in their match against the Dave Perry combination but it was too little to late as they went down by 5 to lose 18-23.

The strong Danny Johnson team which included Col Saillard and Ross Barry

accounted for the Palm Lake connection of Bob Peady, Doug Naylor and Alan Greenhalgh 23-16 after Alan’s side held a good lead at the halfway mark.

The much favoured Jeff Baker team, including Bob Weir and Peter Gurney, lost in a close battle with Bob Skewes, Pip Sullivan and Mark Hair 18-20.

In the final game, octogenarians John Slater, Tom Parkinson and Vic Garlic, (accumulated age 251), won in the dark on the final end 2019 in a battle royal with Barry Goode, Mark Nightingale and Graham Reynolds.

Play in this competition will resume next Saturday with the semi-finals.

Mark Hair’s side will take on the Vic Garlick combination and the Danny Johnson team oppose the Dave Perry three.

Eight cash prizes totalling $1100.

$10 fee for first entry & $5 for other entries.

2000 word limit on any subject.

No entry form needed.

In her second term of Parliament, Member for Port Stephens Ms Kate Washington has taken on a range of roles in her new shadow ministry appointment.

The newly minted Shadow Minister for the Environment and Heritage and Shadow Minister for Rural Health will have a wide portfolio to grasp, as she begins her second term.

Ms Washington has a long standing reputation as being concerned for the natural environment especially with the plight of the koalas in her electorate.

“Before I entered Parliament, I practiced health law, so I know how important it is to ensure everyone can access the health services they need, regardless of where they live.”

Ms Washington has identified her priorities as being amongst others, to focus on reducing single-use plastic, protecting koala habitats, and address ongoing inequities of access to health care for rural communities.

Ms Washington was formerly the Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education and Shadow Minister for the Hunter.
