By Margie TIERNEY THEY’RE not high profile when it comes to their office which is tucked away in the industrial area of Tea Gardens, but the service provided by the Manning Valley and Area Community Transport is vital to hundreds of locals in the Myall region.

Recently, members of the Myall Community Arts and Crafts Centre handed over a cheque for $1,000 to Community Transport, proceeds of their raffle run in conjunction with their January Arts and Craft Show. ‘’The raffle prize was a beautiful painting donated by artist Joan Richards,” Janette Coppock said.

TEA GARDENS local historian Janis Winn can now claim the title of prolific writer with the upcoming launch of her fourth book on the history of the Myall region.

Entitled ‘Hawks Nest a Bird’s Eye View’, it took Jan years of research to compile the book of almost 300 pages and to collect over 800 photos.

“There was a lot involved, a lot of knocking on doors, I’m sure many people got sick of me,” Jan told News Of The Area.

“When you start you don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”

“It starts with the AA company which came to Tahlee in 1826.”

“They had sheep and a grant for a million acres.”

But they found what they were doing with sheep wasn’t suitable so they moved west.

Jan’s memory is remarkable.

Her research and discoveries equally so.

“There’s a lot of history about Yaccabba and its shipwrecks.”

In fact she worked her way through the

streets of Hawks Nest.

Jan’s other three books can be found in the NSW State Library and this one will join them.

the earlier years, which are being shared on the school’s Facebook page.

“It is heartwarming to see the family generations in the school photographs, confirming our family orientated school community,” she said.

Records show 30 pupils, accounting for a third of the total population of the Bulahdelah district, were enrolled at the oneteacher school when it opened in 1868.

Today, more than 400 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 fill the classrooms and specialist learning areas under the guidance of dozens of teachers.

Although classrooms and teaching methods have changed considerably since the school first opened its doors, Mrs Gilbert said BCS remains an important part of the community.

“It is interesting to see how

much our school environment, the teaching and learning and the technology has evolved during this time,” she said.

“Most of the blackboards and then whiteboards have now been replaced with interactive screens, rooms are air conditioned and we deliver flexible educational pathways.”

A small but dedicated planning team are organising a host of activities to commemorate the anniversary including a street parade, open school, commemorative garden and a celebratory dinner.

Mrs Gilbert hopes you will save the date and join the Bulahdelah community to acknowledge this significant milestone in the school’s history.

“I am looking forward to the celebrations to reunite with many familiar faces and share our special memories of our time at BCS,” she said.

Poles to Hawks Nest The Polish dance company, Lajkonik is making a welcome return to Hawks Nest.

THE Polish dance company, Lajkonik is making a welcome return to Hawks Nest.

Lajkonik was last here in 2015 and once again they’ll be performing courtesy of the Myall U3A group.

“Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest residents are eagerly awaiting the return of the Lajkonik Dance Ensemble,” Lyn Chaikin said.

“Their last performance was dynamic and colourful and full energy.”

“It will be a joy to see them again,” Lyn said.

Over the past three years Lajkonik has performed at Festivals in Brisbane,

Melbourne and Jindabyne, the Snowy Mountains town holding fond memories for the group.

“The Jindabyne Festival was particularly special as it commemorated the 200th year Anniversary of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko’s death,” a spokesman for the group said.

“The name of ‘Kosciuszko’ is of course the name given to Australia’s highest mountain by the Polish explorer Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki in honour of a great man who fought for freedom and human rights for all.”

Roads works at Stroud almost done MidCoast Council has just completed a $90,000 upgrade

FEDERAL Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has inspected nearly $500,000 in road works in Stroud and Clarence Town that have been funded through the Federal Coalition Government’s expanded investment in the Roads to Recovery programme.

“Work has just about finished now on the upgrade of both Bridge Street in Stroud and Limeburner’s

Creek Road near Clarence Town, and I’m delighted some of our government’s increased investment in roads is being injected into important projects in the local road network,” Dr Gillespie said.

MidCoast Council has just completed a $90,000 upgrade of Bridge Street in Stroud which includes a new 200-metre road pavement

with a bitumen wearing surface and improvements to the drainage.

Dungog Shire Council has invested just over $400,000 on rehabilitation, widening and stabilisation of the pavement surface on Limeburner’s Creek Road, east of Duke Street. The 500-metre road upgrade also includes improvements to the road’s drainage.

Funding from the Federal Coalition Government’s Roads to Recovery Programme is provided to all local government authorities to assist them maintain and upgrade their local roads.

Skyla on her way to stardom Skyla Conlon has been building on her love of performing, drama and music, and perfecting her skills, from a very young age.

SKYLA Conlon has been building on her love of performing, drama and music, and perfecting her skills, from a very young age.

She has just added a unique experience to the portfolio, being cast in an exhibition piece that will be played indefinitely in the High Court of Australia.

The video is an information documentary style short film about the constitution of Australia, and will run on a repeating loop in a purpose built theatre at the high court in Canberra.

The theatre and film will open the the public on 9 April and be open to anyone who visits the venue, including

school groups.

Skyla attends Hunter School of Performing Arts as a drama students and this is her first professional casting Skyla’s love of acting began with public speaking in her junior primary years, where she realised straight away it was something she loved.

Her mother and father thought she might enjoy drama classes, so in year 2 she started at the Young People’s Theatre.

Skyla told News Of The Area, “I love everything about drama, simply being on stage performing and the buzz everyone feels before every show, or the sense of accomplishment I feel after every show.”

“THANKS to the support of our community during the period of water restrictions introduced on 1 February, we were able to conserve water supplies during what was a very dry summer,” said Council’s Director Water Services, Brendan Guiney.

“The rain that fell this week has significantly increased the flow in our rivers. As a result we’re replenishing the water storages associated with our five water supplies – the Manning (also supplying parts of the Great Lakes),

Gloucester, Bulahdelah, Stroud and Tea Gardens.”

MidCoast Water Services constantly monitors weather conditions, river levels and water use and does implement restrictions when required.

“While we have only been in water restrictions four times since the year 2000, we greatly appreciate the community’s understanding and participation in water restrictions when they are necessary” added Brendan Guiney.

Skyla said “Some of my favorites so far have been Cinderella and winnie the pooh, which I did with Young People’s Theatre, and Hairspray and Grease with Harvest Rain.”

Skyla’s Mother Samantha keeps an eye on jobs that come up, and she will keep auditioning in the hopes of more work like this role.

Skyla remarked, “I have 2 auditions coming up this month, my schools musical Little Mermaid and my drama schools production of Pinocchio.”

Skyla thoroughly enjoyed her first on camera experience, telling News Of The Area, “I loved having a hair & makeup artist, I also loved my costume and working on set at the NSW Rail Museum.”

“I felt very special because the production company paid for all our accommodation and all our food.”

“Overall, it was such a great experience, and I cannot wait to do it again,” she said.

On Rink 2, one of the Grade 4 Pennant teams, Francis Betar, Bette Saillard, Dale Winter and Jill McBride (absent skip Loretta Baker) bowled brilliantly against a team that consisted of 3 members of a Grade 2 Pennant side, Kerry Faber, Robyn Webster, Lynne Green and Kayelene Pearson. Scouts are back in town

LOOK out Hawks Nest, the Scouts are back in town, but they need your help to make it a grand revival.

It’s time for a resurgence and the Scouts are calling on you to get involved.

There’s already a Scout Hall begging to be used, and youth putting their hand up wanting to be involved, so there’s nothing stopping this fantastic movement in regaining the popularity they once had in our

beautiful area.

A public meeting has been called on Tuesday 13 March at 5:30pm in the Hawks Nest Scout Hall on Yamba Street to discuss the options for re-commencing the Scout Group in Hawks Nest.

Stan Woodrow, District Commissioner for Manning District Scouts, told News Of The Area, “We’ve got the hall, we’ve got interested youth, we just need volunteers interested in having as much fun as the

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the new $272-million programme was now open for applications.

“This programme is all about seeking big ideas from the community that can help shape the future of the regions. The Regional Growth Fund will support additional investment for sustainable economic growth, including from the private sector, other levels of government, and not-for-profit organisations,” Dr Gillespie said “Initial applications close on 27 April 2018 and I encourage everyone eligible in our community to look at the program guidelines and get started on an application.”

Breaking Records on the Track

YOUNG local athlete Keira McGregor continues to break records.

After a brief break over summer, 11 year old Keira returned to the track recently at the Little Athletics Regional Championships at Mingara.

“She won all 4 of her events, the 100m, 200m, triple jump and long jump, with a record leap of 5.12m, a record that has stood for 28 years,” proud dad John McGregor said.

A modest Keira said, “I wish to thank my coach Charles Ringuet for the hours, days, weeks, years he has spent helping me .”

“Also many thanks for the help and support from my Raymond Terrace Athletics Club and Dave Summerville.”

“I was very happy to break a 28 year old long jump

record.”

The Hawks Nest youngster has been competing since she was seven years old and late last year won a silver medal at her first international competition.

“Keira deserves all the achievements that she obtains because of the enduring and concentrated training schedule she carries out all the year,” John McGregor added.

Keira’s is now off to the State Championships being held at Sydney Olympic Park from March 23 through to March 25.

She’ll be competing in 4 events.

Keira now has her own fundraising page with the Australian Sports Foundation.

Graham and Gary prevailed in this match winning 22-11.

28 February The last day of summer was weather perfect and saw 46 players competing today including 2 players from Stockton.

Only 4 teams managed to win both games and it was the Pairs combination of Barry Goode and Col Fossey who took out the money on 56 points.

2 March There was a nice field of 20 players competing today in the Friday Open Pairs competition including our Stockton Visitors and another from Scotland, Bill Angus.

Bill kindly donated $20.00 to our Helicopter fund. Thanks Bill!

Lon Richards and Neil Kibble won the day with an emphatic 22-11 win.

3 March A hot and humid day welcomed the remaining teams in the semi-finals of the Club Minor Pairs.

Terry Munright and Anthony Grant opposed Peter Cheney and John Slater.

It was a tough match with John and Peter holding on to a small lead at the half-way mark.

They consolidated that and held a 9 shot advantage with two ends to play.

Terry and Anthony grabbed a 4 on the penultimate end but ran out of ends to play.

He may well be a rookie but David certainly looked at home throughout what turned out to be a very close game.

The lead changed continually and David and Graham looked to be in a winning position with a 4 shot break and with ends fast running out.

Peter and John then picked up a fortuitous 6 to nose their way back in front.

WITH Club pride on the line, local anglers took the water last weekend to battle it out in the annual Mate Against Mate competition.

Bulahdelah Rock and Beach Fishing Club, based at the Bowling Club, came out strongly with a team of 24 anglers hoping to defend the title they won last year.

But in a show of friendly rivalry, 15 anglers from the local Blue Water Fishing Club were out to prove their skills and see the trophy returned to their home base at Bulahdelah Golf Club.

With near perfect conditions, the competitors grabbed their reels and tackles boxes and did what they do
