By Margie TIERNEY THE Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club created history last week when it’s Open Reserve Men’s Boat Crew was crowned World Champions at the International Life Saving World Championships in Adelaide.

“Wow! What an achievement,” Lifesaving Club Peter Rogers told News of the Area.

“The first ever surfboat crew to represent Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club at a World Surf Life Saving Championship and they came away with the Gold medal, World Champions.”

Nearly 50 millimetres of rain fell on the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest towns in less than 12 hours last Wednesday.

Wind gusts of nearly 60 kilometres an hour also brought down a number of trees and plenty of branches, causing some minor damage.

The storm came through in two fronts, dark clouds turning day to night in both the morning and

“Competing against the best, Sharon came away with a 4th Place in the 2km Beach run event, a great achievement,” Peter said.

Our new local World Champions now head off next weekend, joined by the Club’s Under 19’s and Masters Crews, to compete in rounds 3 and 4 of the State Streets Surf Boat series to be held at Macksville and Scotts Head.

THE game of Bridge is alive and well and thriving in Hawks Nest.

Dating back to the 17th century, ‘Bridge’ is a game to test the brain.

But it also offers so much more.

“We have 105 active members and our membership is climbing thanks to the welcoming attitude at the Hawks Nest Club and our appreciation of the importance of the social

aspects of the game,” Leslie Falla told News Of The Area.

“We meet on Mondays at 6pm and Fridays at 12 noon and roughly eight times a year we have our highly popular Sunday lunchtime session when members and their partners are treated to some great homemade cooking,” Leslie said.

Bridge is played worldwide but closer to home there are local Congresses across the Bay and in Taree.

“This year we hosted a Port

Teams Event in a three way competition against Tomaree and Tilligerry,” Leslie said.

“The theme was friendly yet competitive.”

Early in the New Year, Leslie will be holding lessons for beginners..

“Over the last 12 months our wonderful new Clubhouse, together with its welcoming atmosphere, has proved to be much appreciated by those wanting to learn or improve their game.”

“The format will again be as little whiteboard teaching as possible and as much actual card play as can be fitted in.”

“Lessons are always fun; always informal and very affordable,” Leslie added.

People often seek an answer to this question because it has a financial impact on them.

Family courts have jurisdiction to make orders in respect to maintenance and property settlement between persons living in de facto relationships if they are satisfied that there is a de facto relationship, and the total of the periods of that relationship are at least 2 years; or that there is a child of the de facto relationship; or that the claimant has made direct or indirect financial and/or non-financial and/or homemaking contributions to their property and a failure to make an order would result in serious injustice to the claimant.

You cannot be in a de facto relationship with another person if you are married to that person, or if you are the child or adopted child or descendant of the other person; or you have a parent in common, who may be an adoptive parent of either or both of you.

The Family Law Act states that you will be in a de facto relationship with another person if, having regard to all the circumstances of your relationship, you have a relationship as a couple living together on a genuine domestic basis. Unfortunately this definition is as clear as mud in today’s complex society and it is often necessary to undertake a detailed enquiry into the multiple aspects of a relationship to determine whether 2 persons are together as companions, or as friends with benefits, or a couple living together on a genuine domestic basis.

One size does not fit all, and one judge has questioned rhetorically, “how then is a judge expected to decide whether a relationship between a man and a woman (or indeed under this legislation same-sex couples) is marriage like in circumstances where married couples straddle the spectrum from the deliriously happy to the homicidally estranged?”

Santa’s Run Around the Area this December

Santa will be doing his traditional run on Christmas Eve, with the help of the Pindimar/Tea

Gardens Rural Fire Service.

Because it’s a busy time of year for him, Santa will be employing some helpers to ensure none of the children miss out.

There’s two Santa runs.

Starting out from

PINDIMAR/TEA GARDENS RFS: Don O’Brien.

Pindimar Station at 1pm on Monday 24 December, Santa will head down Pindimar Road, Bundabah Road, Bundabah Village, Clarke Street, South Pindimar, South Pindimar Village Warri Road, Koree Street, North Pindimar, North Pindimar Village then back to Pindimar Station at around 3pm.

As always parents are being asked to ensure their children stay safe.

And Santa will also be hitching a ride on a fire truck starting from Captains Cove in Leeward Circuit, Tea Gardens heading off at 1pm.

The Santa run will take in lots of stops along the way from Tea Gardens to Hawks Nest and back.

As always, it’s a busy time for the RFS. Last week, they were called to a grass fire at the 12 Mile Creek Rest Area.

Betty Economos, PBCA Secretary said, “The food was excellent and everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves.”

“We wish to thank all those who attended as well as the volunteers who helped to make this function possible.

All in all, it was a busy three days for the organisers.

There were 55 visitors who tasted and judged the eight home brews.

The winner was Allan Bentley’s Brew Number Eight.

He also took out the Second and Third prizes with brews which he had let mature over 12 months.

All his brews scored over 1,000 points.

The mystery brew was number 3 and Mr. R. Burge from Sydney won the draw and the prize for nominating it as the mystery brew.

“The thong throwing contestants broke all previous records and once again we thank all those who donated items, the stall holders, car boot/trailer persons, Red Cross ladies and vintage car owners who helped make the day a great success,” Betty said.

Community invited to meet with police

By Margie TIERNEY AREA Command and local Police Officers will join forces for a Community Forum in Tea Gardens next week.

Port Stephens/Hunter Chief Inspector Anthony Townsend will lead the meeting which is being held at the Tea Gardens Public School at 6 pm on Thursday 13 December.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to speak face to face with Police Management,” Tea Gardens Senior Constable Dave Coyle told News Of The Area.

Markets on Public Space UNDER the draft policy, market operators are required to collaborate with Council, local residents, the business community and other agencies to ensure consideration is given to the physical space markets

occupy and the people and businesses surrounding them.

The policy relates to all regular markets taking place throughout the MidCoast region, on Council owned land, or Council controlled public land – including farmers markets.

Festivals and ‘one-off’ community based events

and fundraisers such as annual markets and fetes occurring once a year, along with markets taking place on private land, will be excluded from this policy. They may, however, be subject to a separate approval process such as a Special Event or Development Application.

The policy has been placed on public exhibition and community feedback is welcome.

Crawford Street Bulahdelah upgrades MIDCOAST Council will soon oversee road works to reconstruct a section of Crawford Street, Bulahdelah. The work will be undertaken in two stages, between Lee and Richmond Streets. From late November, MidCoast Council’s appointed contractors will assist with Telstra relocation works, during which time Crawford Street will be closed at the Lee Street end.

Access will be maintained

for residents via Richmond Street. Stage one also sees the installation of a box culvert along the eastern side of the street, improving drainage by diverting stormwater into existing streams on the western side. Subject to completion of the Telstra relocation works and with weather permitting, stage one is due for completion late-January 2019.

Personal Bests for Swimmers NORTH Coast Regional Swimming Championships were held at Coffs Harbour on the weekend of 24 to 25 November.

A number of locals swimmers competed in the Stroud Seals team which attended.

Medowie swimmers Hosanna Gray, Angel Gray, Grace Gray and Robert Stanley competed at the Championships. Raymond Terrace swimmers Jacob, Caleb and Claire Whitter also competed at their first Regional Carnival.

The swimmers enjoyed great weather and a really well organised carnival.

Silver Medals were won by Robert Stanley in 200 breast, Grace Gray in the 200 breast and 100 breast.

A Bronze medallion was awarded to Grace Gray in 50 breast and Robert Stanley in the 100 breast.

Robert Stanley also achieve a significant PB in his 50 breaststroke putting him in a competitive position for State Age Championships later in December.

Congratulations to our newest competitors Jacob, Caleb and Claire Whitter who all achieved significant Personal Bests (PBs).

Jacob took a whopping 4.67 seconds off his 50 free time and Claire reduced her 50 free time by 1.66 seconds and her 100 free by 4.67 seconds.

Caleb Whitter made big reductions of 6,7 seconds and 3.01 seconds to his 100 free and 50 back times.

Not to be outdone Angel Gray reduced her 50 free time and 50 breast time by 2.63 seconds and 0.29.

Additionally Hosanna Gray swam 50 fly, 100 breast, 200 breast and achieved PBs in all these events.

Hinton senior swimmer Jeremy Edstein who has been undergoing HSC exams and has been unable to train, attended and swam numerous long distance and short distance events and made his PBs. Jeremy swam strongly and was pleased to make his target times.

Coach Michael Abel who is training the squad to peak at Country Championships in February was pleased the squad was on target.

I find it very wrong that our kids are taking time off school to protest about climate change. They should be learning instead of skipping school to be radical protestors.

Craft Croup Assembling Dear News Of The Area, FOR the last three months or so the ladies of the Wednesday Craft Group have been planning, sewing and assembling magnetic fridge shopping lists.

Fifty five have been completed and will accompany the meals for each recipient of Meals on Wheels. To this end our President Raylene Partridge presented these Christmas gifts to Meals on Wheels Coordinator Meredyth Rae who will play Santa.

Each year much thought goes into the suitability and practicality of the gift and once that is sorted it’s full steam ahead, just like Santa’s workshop, well sort of.

It give us much pleasure in giving and hope it’s also a pleasure and surprise in receiving.

Margaret Munright Gray and Robert Stanley will both compete at the NSW State Age Championships in Sydney during 15 to 19 December in multiple events.

Coach Michael Abel believes the swimmers are on track to perform strongly at the State Championships.

Dear Mrs JU, YOU see, the problem here is that you think students should be learning, when they have been learning – they’ve been learning about the science of climate change. These young people, our future leaders, have chosen to take notice of the scientific community instead of talk-back radio hosts and greedy corporate polluters. And it is their future to protect, Mrs JU. Many people are feeling a huge sense of despair lately regarding the inherent political apathy and downright disregard of our environment, so it is great to see that the upcoming generation are being innovative activists. They’re not putting their head in the sand, or coming up with baseless Twitter comments (cue the American President who blamed the Chinese for creating global warming as a hoax, confused climate change with the weather, and most recently only read part of his own government’s climate change report, stating that he doesn’t believe climate change has any economic impact).

Meanwhile, our young people are displaying a level of understanding and intellectual maturity at odds with those running the joint. Greta Thunberg from Sweden, who is just 15, is striking because she feels it is the only option left: ‘What is the point of learning facts,’ she asks, ‘when the most important facts given by the finest scientists are ignored by our politicians.’ It seems an obvious point, but that lack of clarity is missing from our decision-makers, perhaps because many of them won’t be around to see the repercussions of their inaction.

Radical problems need radical solutions, Mrs JU. If striking is what it takes, then so be it.

Format for play was 3 games of 3 bowls Triples 18 ends and 2 games of Fours 21 ends. Francis Betar, Lorraine Murphy and Kayelene Pearson had a good win against Sheril Johnson, Wendy Brand and Pat Baker. The score was 12 all on the completion of the 12th end, then the rot set in for Pat’s team. The next 6 ends resulted in Kayelene’s team gaining 14 shots, Pat’s side didn’t add to their tally.

RACHAEL Vaughan has made the difficult decision to leave her role as a reporter for News Of The Area.

She has spent the past 122 weeks, or editions in reporter terms, covering every story type the area had available.

Rachael is now well known throughout the Myall and Port Stephens community.

Ms Vaughan said, “The best part about reporting has been the extra connections I made in the community.”

“The paper has helped me to connect to so many more community groups and residents,” Rachael said.

When asked what her favourite story was she said, “I do have a soft spot for the stories of our young people doing great things.”

THE TEA Gardens Hawks Rugby League Club is already looking ahead to next year’s season with plenty of confidence and support.

Tea Gardens Hotel has once again agreed to by the Hawks Major Sponsor.

“We didn’t hesitate, the Hawks Football Club is great for the town, whether you’re a player or supporter,” Hotel owner, Ben Hanson said.

The Hawks Secretary, Neil Reynolds is just as pleased, “The Pub’s support gives the Club a strong foundation which filters through Rugby League in the area.”

The Tea Gardens Country Club is also a valuable supporter of the Club.

As for the players, fresh off the field, the Lady Hawks team in the CRL Ladies 9’s tackle competition is now moving into preparation mode.

The Myall River Juniors is holding an expression of interest day on Sunday 16 December at the Tea Gardens swiming pool.

All interested players and potential officials are invited to attend from 10am for a BBQ lunch.

The Club is expecting to field four teams next season.

“The 6-7 year old team should continue on last year’s effort, A mod team 10 to 12 years can be formed, it’s hoped that a 13 to 14 year team can be formed, and the 17’s will continue with a strong roster,” Neil Reynolds said.

However, all age groups will be considered.

The Hawks will hold a sign on day from midday on Sunday 16 December at Anzac Park on Marine Drive in Tea Gardens.

Lady’s tag and senior players are also invited.
