This year’s theme, ‘I Learn, We Learn’, highlights the high expectations and personalised learning that underpins everyday classroom activities.

THE Myall Community Arts and Craft Centre held its annual Open Day last Saturday giving locals and visitors a chance to see the group’s creative bent at work.

Members had their works on display for the public but were also on hand in the work rooms

to show off their skills in their particular fields of expertise.

The members of the Craft Centre produce a vast array of works from wood turning, lead light, print making and mosaics to the more traditional sewing, knitting and needlework groups.

“To do framing you must be a member and do a three week course.”

The framing group meets every Wednesday.

Mary Britton joined the centre 25 years ago when it was just starting out.

“I used to teach embroidery but now I’m doing American braiding, patchwork and I also spin and knit.”

“We have got so many clever people here and the good thing is the people

who come from other areas and come here to retire bring their skills with them so we get to share the knowledge,” Mary told News Of The Area.

“You’ve got that much to do in Tea Gardens you don’t have to be stuck at home watching TV,” Mary said with a smile.

Next on the agenda for the Arts and Craft Centre is their Quilt Show being held on the Labour Day long weekend at the end of September/early October.

The “high income threshold” is the figure above which an employee is not eligible to bring a claim for unfair dismissal relief, unless their employment is covered by an award or enterprise agreement. Each year, the high income threshold for unfair dismissal claims is indexed upwards.

The components of remuneration that count towards to high income threshold are wages, money paid on a worker’s behalf (for example salary sacrifice towards non-concessional superannuation contributions; or to vehicle leases and the like) and the agreed value of

non-monetary benefits (for example the provision of electronic devices).

The threshold does not include things like commissions or bonuses (which cannot be determined in advance) nor statutory superannuation payments.

Commencing from 1 July 2017, the high income threshold has increased from $138,900.00, to $142,000.00.

The threshold, and the components that are included in it or excluded from it, are important to both workers and employers. Depending on individual circumstances, they may determine whether or not a worker is able to bring a claim for unfair dismissal relief.

Don’t be scammed at tax time

THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging all Australians to keep their personal information secure and to report any suspicious activity immediately this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson warns that identifying information like tax file numbers, bank account numbers or your date of birth are the keys to your identity, and can be used by scammers to break into your life if they are compromised.

“We cannot stress this enough – your personal information must be treated like your bank PIN. If someone knew your PIN, they would have access to your hard-earned income, and it’s the same with your personal information and tax return,” Ms Anderson said.

“The ATO works really hard to maintain the highest levels of security, but if someone gets your personal information, they can use it to impersonate you and engage in fraudulent activity.”

“More than one thousand taxpayers reported their personal information had been compromised in June, up by 26 per cent from May, so we know it is a real problem at this time of year.”

Ms Anderson said all reports of identity theft are taken seriously, with the ATO working directly with taxpayers when they suspect their identities have been stolen, misused or compromised.

“We are committed to supporting victims of tax

“We are very pleased to be working closely with the NSW Government to develop the REDS for the MidCoast region and to be one of the first regions in NSW to do

scams and tax crimes. If you think your tax file number has been stolen or compromised, you should contact our Client Identity Support Centre on 1800 467 033 right away,” Ms Anderson said.

Ms Anderson said the best defence against scammers was keeping your information safe and knowing what to do if you are targeted.

“You can’t be too careful when it comes to your personal details. If you are contacted by anyone

purporting to be from the ATO and you have any doubts about whether it is legitimate, immediately hang up and get in touch with the ATO to verify the call.”

“Tell-tale signs include a caller threatening you with arrest or jail, aggressive or rude behaviour, or asking you to pay money into strange bank accounts or settle tax debts with things like gift cards or iTunes cards. We would never do this,” Ms Anderson said.

“If something doesn’t sound right, you can always check your myGov account, ask your tax agent, or call

The development of consistent REDS across State regions is an initiative of the NSW Government’s Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Fire Pit Hit

YOU’D normally find Chef Josh Burke busy working in the kitchen of the Tea Gardens Hotel.

But last Saturday he was out in the beer garden with a shovel in his hand raking coals.

“I’ve been here since 5am this morning,” Josh told News Of The Area.

Josh, along with hotel owner Ben Hanson, was up with the dawn, organising and cooking the first ever Argentinian Asada (barbecue) at the pub.

On offer, slow roasted, lamb and goat over the fire pit, which proved to be a big hit.

“We were all sold out by early afternoon,” Ben said.

“It was great.”

“We’re going to have to do more lambs and goats next time.”

The weather too was an added bonus, families and groups happy to bask in the sunshine of the beer garden and listen to some live music from the band Wards Xpress during the afternoon.

“It’s definitely going to be a regular event,” Ben said.

Bowled over with attention

A REPUTATION for having some of best oysters in NSW recently attracted TV personality Mike Whitney and the team from Sydney Weekender to the local area.

The crew spent the day at Cole Bros in Karuah, and filmed as Mike assisted Dean, Stephen and Brock Cole harvest oysters, which was

naturally followed by taste testing.

“Mike Whitney certainly loves oysters,” Dean told News Of The Area.

“He said the oysters on the South Coast are good, but he can’t go past these ones in Karuah.”

Dean said their winter oysters have “a more briny, saltier taste” which “a lot of people love”.

“It blows them away,” Dean told News Of The Area.

“We are pretty proud of what we produce here and there’s been high demand for them in the markets in Sydney.”

The Sydney Weekender crew were filming throughout the region to promote this month’s Port Stephens Love Seafood Festival, which showcases the region’s

Dean said the event is an initiative of Destination NSW/ Port Stephens in conjunction with the Department of Primary Industries.

“In Port Stephens, producers like us open our doors and show off what we do to the public, so people can see how farms operate,” Dean said.

Cole Bros will also be involved in Farmers of the Sea at D’Albora Marina in Nelson Bay on Saturday 12 August.

“All the oyster growers will be there as a group, there will be tastings, oysters for sale and shucking races,” Dean said.

I was discreetly breastfeeding my baby in the food court at the local shopping centre, when I was approached by a security guard. He directed me to a room designated for nursing mothers. CONCERNS grows over increases in electricity charges, but media fails to mention the largest expense, that being, land rates.

Inflation has been less than two percent, but, this has not prevented MidCoast Council (MCC) from pushing their agenda seeking a 28.5 percent increase over four years.

IPART, granted MCC a 27.3 percent increase taking into account IPART’s criteria, that being ,their community consultation, the need for an increase and the community’s ability to repay.

MCC’s new proposal for a Special Rate Variation(SRV) was only drafted in April,was

As regards electricity, because we are in an Essential Energy area, we pay twice the Supply Access Charge (SAC) than Sydney.

Water rates are currently $1200/year, before you turn the tap on.

These are soon to be combined with land rates so expect the combined annual land/water to be $3700 plus and $4500, or nearly $100 a week, in four years.

Is this the reason city dwellers are reluctant to come to the country?

MANY revolting, socially unacceptable acts occur in a food court, but breastfeeding is not one of them.

First the sights: There is more exposed skin in a food court than you can poke a soggy chip at.

Muffin tops rolling out of trackie-daks, breasts leaping from too-tight tank tops, bottom cracks smiling, tuckshop arms flapping . . . you name the body part and it’s there in all its shameless glory.

So how a breast (hidden by a baby’s head and a strategically placed bunny-rug) can be an issue, is beyond the bounds of logic.

Then there’s the sounds: Toddlers screaming into their kebabs.

Uncouth individuals coughing all over your salmon and avocado sushi roll without so much as a sorry.

There’s the glug-glug of people mindlessly shoving fist-sized helpings of unrecognisable food in the general direction of their mouths, gluttons with no sense of delicacy or decorum, the din of futile chatter, zippers straining against beer guts, gravy sludge slurped by an unwatched child.

How can the delicate sound of a baby having her 10am feed be heard over the ruckus?

It seems to me, that the natural, unsullied undertaking of giving a baby a healthy and nutritious meal straight from mother nature is perhaps just so far removed from the fusty, fetid, scraping, screeching environment of a food court, that they simply don’t know what to do with you.

Or maybe the security guy was bottle fed.

THE volunteers at the Bulahdelah Courthouse Museum have recently set up a sewing corner featuring garments and items from the early 1900s, including a nightdress which was a prize winner at Bulahdelah Show.

We obtained a display

cabinet when the library moved into the RTC and have it full of lovely old vases, a lot of which were wedding presents given to brides in the 50s and 60s.

The laundry is looking great and we are currently searching for an old blue bag, a draining pot and copper stick.

If you have any of these items, we would be more than grateful and we would love to add them to our laundry.

The museum is opened every Saturday from 9am until 3pm.

Entry fee is $5 and we welcome everyone.

THERE’S some exciting news for local pet owners and lovers – Port Stephens Pet Warehouse has undertaken a massive revamp, breaking new ground in quality and service.

The one-stop pet store, which has been owned and operated by local businessman Brian Blake for more than 10 years, offers everything a pet owner needs.

The massive warehouse stocks leading brands in a range of pet accessories, food, clothing, toys, bedding, collars and leads.

There is also an array of birds (many hand-raised), reptiles and fish available, and in groundbreaking news the local business can now also offer a dog wash, in addition to pet grooming and styling.

Mr Blake said he was excited to have Petz Palace open its doors adjacent to the Pet Warehouse in Shearwater Drive, Taylors Beach.

“We are fortunate to have experienced pet groomer Maura Bandi available five days a week,” Mr Blake said.

“The grooming business will complement our newly installed, do-it-yourself dog wash facility.

WITH new members joining almost every week, the Myall Melodians continue to go from strength to strength, and now have a registered membership of more than 80.

Every Tuesday evening, the Grange Auditorium is filled with many happy singers, combined with much laughter as they enjoy improving their musical skills, honed by the group’s unique Musical Directory, Margaret Rowden.

The Melodians’ next major production, ‘A Tapestry

of Musical Nostalgia’ will be held at Tea Gardens Grange.

Evening performances will commence at 7pm on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 August, with a Matinee at 2pm on Sunday 27 August.

Tickets are $15 each and are on sale at Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Pharmacies, as well as The Grange Gatehouse.

The concerts will include all the highlights from the group’s recent sell out performances including Salute, Celebrating Musicals, Gilbert and Sullivan and The World in Harmony.

In addition, the

production will feature a light hearted historical account of how The Melodians came into being, it’s growth and remarkable development.

This year, the Melodians have partnered with the Myall Coast Rotary Club, supporting community projects by raising funds for Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club, to provide a defibrillator, a PA system for the beach vehicle and upgrade of signage.

Tickets for the performances are in high demand and as there is limited seating available, it would be wise to book early.

PROGRESS is being made following the recent talks between the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest Community and Port Stephens Ferry Service.

Malcolm Anderson, Business Advisor to Ferry Operator Adrian Thompson, met last week with MidCoast Council’s Daniel Aldridge to discuss changes to the timetable

“We’re going to get the signage sorted so that anyone walking here can understand it and what we’re doing on any given day,” Malcolm Anderson told News Of The Area.

Currently the sign is a mishmash of blocked out phone numbers from operators no longer servicing the Tea Gardens run.

It also states that ‘Ferries depart every half hour 7 days a week’.

Council’s Daniel Aldridge says there’s no impediment to a new sign as far as MidCoast is concerned.

“Approval is already in place,” Mr Aldridge said.

“Anyone who sees the sign will be able to work out how to contact us,” Mr Anderson said.

“We will link that to the available technology that everyone has access to these days, Facebook, our website and mobile phone.”

“We know how important the ferry is to the whole community not just the tourism industry.”

Mr Anderson says the new signage is a priority and will hopefully be in place within weeks along with a new timetable.

As for the ferries no longer stopping at the Hawks Nest Wharf, Mr Anderson said, “We have no way of knowing who’s going to be there, it adds to the timetable, it’s not a simple pick up.”

“There are issues we are still trying to resolve around Hawks Nest.”

Funding For Local Projects

THREE Myall Coast organisations have been allocated funds in the final round of the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Grants Program.

Announced last week, Bulahdelah Scouts will receive $10,650 for new equipment, Tea Gardens Men’s Shed were allocated $23,650 to go toward their new building and Tea Gardens Soccer Club received $14,000 for seating at Memorial Park.

Bulahdelah Cub Leader, David Mort, said the grant will enable the purchase of six new canoes and a trailer, in addition to a data projector and screen.

“These grants are good

for groups like us because they help us stay operating,” David told News Of The Area.

“The canoes will be easy to manage and will encourage the kids to get out and do more outdoor activities, and the projector will allow us to run educational programs.”

MidCoast Director of Community Spaces and Services, Paul De Szell, said a total of 19 projects in the MidCoast area will be kick-started through this final round of the Stronger Communities Fund.

“We had a terrific response from community groups, with 75 applications received in this round,” he said.

“The panel appointed to work through the applications had an extremely rough job in

awarding the funding, with so many and varied projects that demonstrated strong benefits to our community.”

Other successful applicants include The Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group who received $50,000 and Forster Surf Life Saving Club who were awarded $35,910 for a new beach patrol vehicle.

“While not every project could be funded, we will continue to encourage and support the efforts of our highly valued and active community groups who make such a difference to the services and facilities in our region,” Paul said.

The two-year grants program has delivered $1 million in NSW Government funds to 36 projects across the Midcoast region.

HAWKS NEST definitely qualifies as a tourist destination.

But not everyone is on holidays.

One of the hardest working locals is Hawks Nest Newsagent Hugo Elstermann.

Monday to Friday, Hugo opens his doors at 5.30am to catch the early rises.

“The community is coming in earlier and earlier,” Hugo told News Of The Area.

But Hugo is so much more

than a Newsagent.

He also runs the Post Office and he’s decided to extend its hours.

“Instead of 9am, we’re opening the Post Office at 8am Monday through Friday and Saturday morning as well,” Hugo said.

“It means you can do passport interviews early in the morning, and organise your photos if you’re time stretched,” Hugo said.

And of course there’s the regular postal services as well as banking operations on offer.

Hugo said Australia Post has agreed and supported the move to cater to local demand.

“They understood the benefits to the community.”

While Hugo works seven days a week, opening before the dawn and closing after sunset he’s a bit concerned the locals may want more.

“My theory is, now I’m opening the Post Office at 8am they’ll want to be able to do it at 7,” Hugo laughed.

The new opening time comes into effect this week.

IT felt like spring and it smelt like summer with clouds of bushfire smoke billowing over Hawks Nest last week.

But it was all part of a planned hazard reduction burn near the Golf Club and along Tuloa Avenue and Yamba Street.

“The burn itself went really well,” Helmut Panhuber, Captain of the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service told News Of The Area.

What wasn’t planned was the number of small fires reportedly started by arsonists but quickly controlled.

“They weren’t spot fires,” Helmut said.

“There were a few ignition points.”

Police were also quickly on the scene.

The winds sent most of the smoke out to sea and also aided the fire crews.

for the burn because the undergrowth was quite damp and moist and it would have been hard to get it (the fire) going,” Helmut said.

“While the wind was a little bit on the strong side, you’ve got to take the opportunity when it comes.”

Headland Highlights

ONE of the favourite walks in our calendar is to Seal Rocks and I’m sure one reason is the continuing benevolence of the weather gods, and again we were not to be disappointed.

In saying this I hope I have not jinxed us.

So it was no surprise that thirty plus walkers assembled for another go at ‘cardiac hill’, through the bush to Treachery Headland and along the beach to the lighthouse.

In total a walk of about twelve kilometres, or so my

phone app informs me.

Some experienced and forewarned walkers elected to avoid ‘cardiac hill’ and waited for the drivers and some other fool hardy or intrepid walkers, a totally subjective interpretation, at the beginning of the bush track.

Sitting on the lawn beneath the lighthouse and enjoying our well earned lunch we were lucky enough to catch sight of what must be the tail end of the whale migration north.

Muddies Clawed into Semis

LAST Saturday, the Muddies travelled to Taree with twelve players for their clash against the Manning River RATZ in the final round of the Lower Mid North Coast Rugby Union Competition.

Despite the low numbers, the Muddies were very competitive in the first half of the match by displaying vigour in the rucks and mauls and more than matching their opposition, but as the match continued, the Muddies ran “on tired legs” and were overrun by the RATZ backline.

Every Muddies player contributed solidly with emphasis on the John brothers in the forwards together with Jackson Page and a sterling captain’s effort

Seal Rocks is one of the great unspoiled gems of the NSW mid north coast and home to one of the state’s few remaining Littoral rainforests.

Littoral rainforest occurs only on the coast, is very rare and occurs in small stands.

Restaurant reopens at Nelson Bay

TWO years after fire swept through the Nelson Bay Golf Club and restaurant, the popular Bluewater Grill will reopen its doors this week.

It has been a tough couple of years for Bluewater owners Will and Tanya Semmens, but they can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

“Working out of the makeshift clubhouse has been difficult, particularly the last 12 months … we had to sell our home,” Mr Semmens said.

“But we can now move forward with confidence.

We are looking forward to starting again.

“We see the reopening in a brand new building as a great opportunity to build on the close relationship we have with our loyal customers and hope to attract a host of new ones.

“We are extremely grateful to the local members who have stuck by us through these difficult times.”

Diners will notice lots of changes with the décor and seating capacity, which has doubled from the current 60 to more than 120.

The menu will feature modern Australian cuisine

and retains chef Tanya’s signature salt and pepper squid, along with family favourites such as beef cheeks and lambs fry.

“There will also be a bigger emphasis on the café section with coffees and freshly homemade cakes,” Mr Semmens said.

“In fact all our meals are made to order, using only fresh local produce.”

The Bluewater will also cater for weddings, parties and conferences, along with golf groups, fundraisers and the like.

Families will be made most welcome with the inclusion of a children’s play area strategically placed adjacent to the restaurant.

Mr Semmens said that the restaurant employed up to 20 staff including chefs, waiters and kitchen hands, and that customer service remained a priority.

The Bluewater Grill is open every day from 10am to 9pm and bookings are essential.

The restaurant is situated in the newly built Nelson Bay Golf Club, in Dowling Street.

Club mourns passing of president Kerry O’Brien.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

MEMBERS of the Country Club were saddened to hear of the passing of friend and colleague, Kerry (Sugar) O’Brien.

Kerry had recently taken on the job of president of the Men’s Bowling Club and was formerly a member of the Country Club Board.

Kerry had a long association with the sport of bowls especially around Gunnedah and Lightning Ridge before he settled in Tea Gardens.

He was a mentor to many taking up the game and will surely be missed both as a friend and player.

At the time of writing, details as to his funeral are not known.

The usual team of Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair won again with a score of 54 points, two wins plus 14 ends won.

On a very creditable 53 points was the team of Brian McPhee, Garry Porter and Henry Dallas.

A new format next week will trim the sails of the constant winners in that they will only be allowed to enter into a draw to determine the winner of a monthly prize.

The new arrangements are the weekly winning team, plus one randomly picked will go into a draw for a monthly “Queens Kitchen” team of the month.

That team will win three $20 vouchers for a meal at Queens Kitchen.

There will be two $15 credits to be won that will be added to the winning member’s card.

In addition there will be one $10 “Brewhouse” lunch voucher drawn each week.

The “Mables Draw” will continue unchanged.

28 July The light rain in the morning cleared away on cue for the Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs played today.

It was great to see another near capacity field participate.

Three-bowl Pairs is proving to be a very popular format and it is hoped that the great fields playing will continue.

As the name implies, bowlers are playing for the Jackpot and again there has been a slight tweaking of the format, designed to increase the jackpot amount each week according to the number of players attending.

For example, if there are 28 players, $28 is added to the jackpot. The minimum would be $15 for 15 players.

This should have the effect of rapidly increasing the Jackpot

THE dust flew along the challenging 150-kilometre course in the fourth round of the Pipe King Southern Cross Rally series held in Bulahdelah last weekend.

In an ultra-competitive field, two of Australia’s top rally drivers, Nathan Quinn and Tony Sullens, along with seven NSW rally car champions, were amongst the 50 teams who negotiated the dirt roads surrounding Wootton Way and Wang Wauk State Forest.

The event also featured a night run along Manning Hill road.

“This is a competitive field of A-grade drivers,” Australian Motorsport Action Group (AMSAG) spokesperson Jamie Neale said.

“It’s all about vehicle speed, vehicle reliability, navigational skill and, of course, driver skill.”

Jamie said speed across the stages averaged around 85 km/h, but with competitors travelling at up to 200km/h on some sections of the course, it wasn’t always a smooth ride.

“This is a sport that’s very hard, both driving and codriving, where if you push too hard, it almost nearly ends in tears,” he said.

“We have had competitors break wheels and control arms because the roads are a little bit rough, and of course the drivers are not slowing down.”

This is the third time AMSAG has held the event in Bulahdelah, which “has quickly become one of the premier rallies on the East Coast”.

Jamie said the event attracts over 1,000 people from all over the country, injecting money into the local

economy.

“We love Bulahdelah, it is a fantastic place to rally,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful location and the bowling club and local facilities are great.”

The fifth round of series will be held at Orange in September.
