The couple has been doing their bit, constantly visiting the Dunedoo region and getting down and getting dirty with the Blazeaid organisation which is helping with the massive clean up and rebuild of the area.

Over 52 thousand hectares were destroyed along with 52 homes,

60 thousand head of livestock, 130 buildings and six thousand kilometres of fencing in the February firestorm.

Blazeaid was started in 2009 after the devastating Black Saturday fires in Victoria.

Since then, the not for profit organisation has helped over three thousand property owners affected by fire.

BULAHDELAH’S Bendigo Bank Agency is now open for business, and is offering a full range of banking services for the community.

“It’s a country bank, and will look after all of us,” Agent Judy Dixon said.

“There has been some concern from the community about how long is it going to stay, but Bendigo Bank is here for the long-haul.”

Mrs Dixon said “a lot of blood, sweat and tears” went into getting the Agency up and running.

“We approached a lot of banks, and Bendigo Bank was the only one that

wanted to come,” she said.

“They are very happy to be able to work with the community, but it is now up to the locals to support it.”

Dean and Stephen Cole from Cole Bros Oysters in Karuah, who are third generation in the industry, said oyster theft “has always been an issue”.

“You always notice some gone, but this year the amounts have been bigger, commercial quantities,” Dean said.

“Instead of losing 30 or 40 dozen, some farmers have noticed 20 trays taken with 600 dozen.”

Dean said there are about 40 farmers in the Port Stephens area, and around half have lost oysters in the past few years.

“Tea Gardens has probably been one of the worst areas hit,” he said.

“Around Corrie Island and down to Lemon Tree Passage and Soldiers Point, have also

been hit hard and also Pindimar Bay and around the Karuah River.”

In response to the ongoing thefts, the DPI is working with NSW Police to detect and deter the black marketing of the delicacies.

“Fisheries Officers regularly conduct covert surveillance operations to detect the unauthorised removal of oysters from oyster leases,” a spokesperson from the NSW DPI said.

“They also provide oyster farmers with advice on preventative measures, including

the use of surveillance cameras.”

Dean said the use of cameras at Wallis Lake stopped thefts completely, and local farmers are now resorting to the same security measures.

“Cameras will be strategically placed and moved randomly, even the farmers won’t know where they are,” he said.

Figures from the DPI show that 769,743 dozen Sydney Rock Oysters, valued at over $5.8million, were produced in the Port Stephens area in 20152016.

Dean said there is

always a big demand for local oysters at this time of the year.

“In terms of sellable oysters, we’ve got some of the best going into Sydney markets and along the East Coast now,” he said.

“There’s been good conditions and they are really sought after.”

But with many farmers losing oysters, the DPI encourage them to use the oyster theft reporting form on the DPI website, to assist Officers and NSW Police to fully investigate the incidents.

The idea of leaving a specific gift of real estate in a Will appeals to some people. If a specific gift of real estate is going to be given, the following three things need to be properly considered: • ademption - if a specific gift of real estate is left in a Will but it has been sold before death, the legal principle of ademption provides the gift fails.

Even if the sale proceeds were used to buy a new house, the gift will fail unless the Will is drafted to specifically contemplate this.

• mortgages - did you know that under Section 145 of the Conveyancing Act, a mortgage over a property which is specifically gifted under a Will attaches to the gift (unless the Will expressly says otherwise).

This means the beneficiary who is gifted the property will ultimately be responsible for repayment of the mortgage unless there is an express intention against this in the Will.

• capital gains tax - while a principal place of residence is exempt from capital gains tax, investment properties are not. A beneficiary who receives a property will take it subject to any capital gains tax liability and this often isn’t thought about until the beneficiary goes to sell the property and is hit with a tax bill.

Leaving specific gifts of real estate requires proper consideration of the circumstances. Without considering these three things, often what people intended and what happens in reality can be very different.

The popularity of the small, twirling, three pronged gadgets has recently exploded, and Myall Coast children have quickly joined

the global fad.

“Spinning it is addictive, and once you start, you always want to make it go faster,” Khloe Middleton told News Of The Area.

“It’s fun to have in your hand and it stops you fiddling with other things in class,” Annee-Rose Perry said.

School Counsellor at Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah and Booral schools, Ms Georgia Garr, said the benefits of the Fidget Spinner is a “controversial topic at the moment”.

“There is some evidence linking it with helping students, like those with ADHD, as it gives them something to concentrate on

and helps them stay on task,” she said.

“But for a lot of other kids, I think it is just a passing phase like yoyos, and is probably something just to play with, rather than actually helping them in class.”

Like many toys, Myall Coast young people are quickly discovering there is a need to use the Fidget Spinner with caution.

“Your hair can get caught in the bearing when you spin it, and you have it rip it out,” Khloe said.

But regardless of whether

it is a concentration tool or just a toy, there is no denying the enjoyment it brings.

“You can have competitions with your friends, like seeing who can spin it the longest,” Khloe told News Of The Area.

Visitors will be able to taste local water buffalo milk, jersey cow cheese, wines, seasonal fruits and seafood.

Gourmet meals and a range of baked goods and desserts packed full of local, organic produce will also be on offer.

Local producer, Julie Steepe, from Bulahdelah’s Lucy Land Merino Farm, said the Food Trail is all about promoting the brilliant, chemical free, local produce.

“It’s about like minded, ethical producers who are working together to showcase this great region and everything it has to offer,” Julie said.

“We have a huge variety of great ethical food, and just like our diverse landscape with the beaches, rivers and valleys, our food is just as diverse.”

Through farm tours, visitors will also learn about the principles of

permaculture gardening and ethical farming straight from the local producers.

For children and the young at heart, feeding lambs and chickens and collecting eggs is bound to be a highlight.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Julie said she was overwhelmed at the success

of the Easter Food Trail.

“It was so inspiring to see so many people turn up who had such a huge level of respect and interest in where their food came from,” Julie said.

“We don’t want to be feeding our animals hormones to increase their growing potential, we want

MKEG was also involved in the new Koala Strategy being prepared by the NSW government.

The Barker Boys came to town again in December and, under the guidance of Christian Patteson, tackled huge swathes of lantana and

bitou bush east of Hawks Nest Caravan Park.

The Bitou Busters also involved locals in bush regeneration around the town of Hawks Nest.

These efforts open the bush areas and allow the koalas to be able to move through the town and hopefully stay off the roads.

All native animals benefit ultimately.

By Jill MADDEN IT is vital to stop and reflect about the previous 12 months; the frustrations and the negatives, of which there have been a few, and the positives of which there have been many.

Our efforts to raise the profile of the plight of wildlife in our area, with an emphasis on koalas, was particularly effective with many articles in the local papers associated with our five-cent campaign, which drew the attention of residents and visitors.

The Myall River Festival tree give away and the Easter stall and raffle are always an opportunity to connect with the community and receive feedback about koalas and other environmental issues in the area.

The sign at the bridge is also a real talking point in town, whether working or not it must be alerting drivers to slow down. Frustrations with it aside, many thanks to the efforts of the Council to make it happen.

Police Award Promotes Pride

By Daniel SAHYOUN REWARDING positive behaviour and promoting safety are some of the many ways local police are supporting the Bulahdelah Central School community.

A Police Award is presented by the Officers at school assemblies each fortnight, which was introduced by Senior Constable Ashley Ray. Assistant Principal, Mrs Carol Wills, said the PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) Police Award is tied to the school’s PRIDE values of Participation, Respect, Innovation, Determination and Excellence.

“It is awarded to students who demonstrate these values, not only at school but also in the community,” she said.

Sn Constable Dave Feeney also joined Mrs Wills and an enthusiastic group of students, staff and parents who braved the wet weather for last week’s National Walk Safely to School Day. The annual event raises an awareness of road safety and promotes the health benefits of regular exercise.

Sn Constable Feeney said the police enjoy being involved in these events.

“From a policing standpoint of such a friendly small town, we all strongly believe it is important to

Through their active involvement in the school, Sn Constable Feeney said they are also able to promote good, law abiding and safe life choices.

prevent kids going down the wrong path and doing things they would regret later in life,” he said.

Mrs Wills told News Of The Area, the school welcomes the involvement of local police, who are very positive role models for the students.

Paparazzi Dog now at Hotel

By Margie TIERNEY MOST people move to Tea Gardens to retire, but not Ben and Emily Hanson.

As the new owners of the iconic Tea Gardens Hotel/ Motel, they’re working up to 16 hour days and loving every minute of it.

“To do a complete life shift, and take on a totally new endeavour, it’s a huge change,” Emily told News Of The Area.

“But I’ve never seen Ben happier.”

Ben was one of the Nine Network’s top cameramen for more than 20 years, before turning freelance.

He worked out of Sydney and London and covered major stories from the White House to the wars in Iraq and the Middle East.

Emily too spent many

years living and working in America, before deciding to come home to Australia.

The couple met on the set of ‘The Bachelor’, married and now have 14-month-old Flynn.

“You don’t want to be going to war zones when you have a family,” Ben said.

The couple was looking to buy a pub and was considering a move to Narooma when Ben asked the advice of his Uncle Arthur Laundy.

“He wanted to sell his Tea Gardens hotel and the timing was right,” Ben said.

“We came up in December and we fell in love with the place.”

“We saw that the hotel had good bones,” Ben said.

“We looked at the river and the beaches and we both said this is where we want to raise our little son.”

Ben and Emily have already made changes and a lot more are on the way. ‘’Over the next few months, we’re renovating all the accommodation,” Emily said.

“We want visitors to say, “that place was so charming, we’ll come back again and again”.

There’s also a new bronze statue looking out to the river, and turning heads.

The ‘Paparazzi Dog’ was created by Sydney artists Gillie and Marc in homage to Ben’s former career.

The beer garden and interior are also being renovated.

“We want it to be a place where families come with their kids.”

“We also want to support the town,” Emily said.

“The better this place goes, the more jobs are brought to town.”

“We take such pride in everything we do, this is like our own home.”

“We’re going to put some love into the place.”

Million Dollar Shortfall

School communities and State MPs remain united in their fight against the Turnbull Government’s education cuts that will see Myall Coast schools lose more than $1 million in funding in 2018 and 2019.

SCHOOL communities and State MPs remain united in their fight against the Turnbull Government’s education cuts that will see Myall Coast schools lose more than $1 million in funding in 2018 and 2019.

Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead, said the cuts to needs-based funding will impact on children in the region who have the greatest needs.

“NSW was the first state to sign up to Gonski

and embrace needs-based funding, and we want the full amount as per the agreement that we signed with the Federal Government,” Mr Bromhead said.

Figures from the NSW Teachers Federation show funding for Bulahdelah Central School will be cut by $567,713, Karuah Public will lose $252,028 and Tea Gardens Public, $270,620, over the next two years.

Local schools had planned to use the funding for many targeted initiatives including employing

additional teachers to run one-on-one literacy and numeracy intervention programs.

“All this now has to be put on hold which is really disappointing because we are currently just touching the tip of the iceberg with our programs,” Bulahdelah Principal Mr Don Hudson stated in the school

“There is no doubt that with the original funds promised under the Gonski funding agreement we could have made a huge difference,” he said.

Although the figures show an increase in funding of more than $240,000 across the three local schools over the next two years, the

funds fall way short of the original Gonski promise.

The Federation simply want the Turnbull Government to honour the full six years of the Gonski funding agreement.

“The NSW Government shares the same stance with the Teacher’s Federation,” Mr Bromhead said.

“The good news is that

we have got more money, we have to acknowledge that, it’s just that now we would like the full funding.”

The NSW Teachers Federation figures show that students in all but 10 NSW public schools will lose out under the Turnbull Government’s plan.

By Margie TIERNEY TEA Gardens restaurateur Peter Hodges has been lucky enough to combine his passion for all things French with a lifelong career.

His love of the language began in High School when Peter chose to learn French in Year 7.

“I was good at it, I could just do it,” Peter told News Of The Area. ‘’My favourite French teacher was a Scottish guy.”

Fast forward to this century and Peter and wife Kerry have spent the last

outdoor equipment, such as slides and bikes.

Brooke Turner will be hosting the afternoon, demonstrating products founded on the commitment of no animal testing.

The day will be a chance to mix with friends while you assist an organisation that helps children, parents and grandparents in the

Len Roberts, former Great Lakes Councillor, Deputy Mayor and now advisor to Midcoast Council will address a number of topics including the upcoming Council election.

“Len has not committed to run for election so his agreement to address the meeting is not politically oriented,” Progress Association Secretary Patricia Garrard told News Of The Area.

“I do know that a number of members of the community are somewhat confused by the new system, so this issue should be of major interest to many people.”

Len is also Chairman of the local Aboriginal Land Council.

“Len has really thrown himself into this role so any matter he does address should be very interesting.”

The Progress Association is in the process of developing its own web page and Facebook page to keep the community abreast of local news, initiatives and proposals.

The group’s next general meeting is being held at the Hawks Nest Community Hall at 7pm on Monday 12 June.

As Chevaliers and Ambassadors of Confrèrie, Peter and Kerry take a group of Australians every year to their other home in rural France. ‘’It provides cross cultural opportunities for Australians,” Peter said.

“It works both ways for our French friends as well, when the Australians rock up it’s a bit of a party atmosphere in the small town for a couple of weeks.’’

Peter’s cape of red velvet signifies the colour of the wines of Bergerac.

He brought it home last year so Jenny Gimbert from Black Possum Fabric and Beads in Tea Gardens could mend and alter it.

“It won’t come out again as it’s too heavy,” Kerry laughed.

Peter and Kerry take off in July for France but Tillermans restaurant will remain open in the capable hands of their son.

By Rachael VAUGHAN BULAHDELAH Cricket Club held their presentation day recently, celebrating a successful season with a family barbecue on the lake at Neranie.

A good day was had by all with plenty of refreshments and some fine food expertly barbecued by captain Geoff Matheson, along with assistant chef and tear away fast bowler Wayne Thomson.

This year was the first year that Bulahdelah Cricket Club has had a team in the competition for over ten years.

It was a successful season, with the club

finishing third on the ladder.

Unfortunately the semifinal series was a complete wash out due to wet weather and sporting field closures.

This enabled the team that finished first on the ladder, Great Lakes Cricket Club, to claim the title of premiers.

Individual awards for Bulahdelah Cricket Club were: Batting AggregateToby Carroll 551 runs, Batting AverageToby Carroll 55.1, Bowling Aggregate- Cooper Bramston 25 wickets, Bowling AverageZac Allen 13, Best Fielding Award- William Smith and Most Improved- Zac Fletcher.

Clubman of the Year

for this season was shared between Geoff Matheson and Nathan Fletcher.

A new trophy was created this year called the Jarrod Haynes Memorial Best and Fairest Award.

This year that award deservedly went to Toby Carroll.

By Luke BOYD THURSDAY, 18 May 2017, was the date of the latest social darts evening to be held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

The winner of the ladies’ highest score competition for the evening was Gail Bartlett who scored 100 points.

Ben Brodick was the men’s highest score competition winner with a great score of 160 points from a possible 180 points. The mixed doubles team darts competition was a very close finish.

17 May: Fine and sunny conditions greeted the fullhouse of 42 bowlers competing today in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples event.

The winners were determined by 20 points for a win and a point for each end won.

Winning both games plus 17 ends was the team of Lance Atkins, Pip Sullivan and Greg Pearson.

The runners-up were; Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair.

The “barrel draw” winners being; Ron Webster, Barry Drayton and Terry Munright.

19 May: Four rinks battled it out for the money and the winner was decided by the winning team with the lowest margin.

The team of Denis Wilberforce and Brian Woolfe, a visitor from Boolaroo, had a winning margin of just 1.

They edged out John Atherton and Karen McPhie.

The jackpot was not won and will accumulate to $240.00 next week.

20 May: The Mighty Grade 6 Dolphins really struggled on the heavy going at Wallsend.

Grade 6 were beaten by 20 shots overall with Cardiff winning the contest 66-46.

The best of the “Sixes” was the Ron Webster four who managed to draw their game 15-15.

The Danny Johnson Side lost by 5 going down 17-21.

The remaining side were well in the game to the halfway mark but a dropped 6, on the 11th end, followed by another on the 13th saw the contest slip from their grasp.

The Mighty Grade 3 Dolphins played Wallsend at Beresfield in their Sectional Playoff games.

The “Jaffa” followed this

game and there was some very fine bowls played by both sides.

Two Tea Gardens teams won close encounters with the Steve Pell side managing a ‘‘gutsy” one point win 1918, having to stage a mighty comeback after conceding a 5 in the early stages.

The Sean Mearrick Four had a good 5 shot win 18-13 however it was not enough to make up the deficit on the Master Board and in the end the Mighty Threes went down by a lousy 6 shots.

Wallsend going through to the semi-finals with a 60-54 win.

Pennant players, reserves, ancillary staff and umpires will have the opportunity to reminisce at the Pennant Bash to be held on Friday 16 June commencing at 12 noon in the Club Restaurant.

Preceding the “bash” will be an important Charity Day in aid of the Dunedoo Bush Fire Appeal.

This is a single entry event, open to men and women commencing at 12 noon for a 12.30pm start.

Dress is mufti and the $10.00 entry fee includes a sausage sizzle.

All proceeds will go to the Dunedoo Branch of the CWA Bushfire Appeal Fund.

Hear tell there will be plenty of oysters up for raffle prizes.

In other news, The draw for the Club Major Singles Championship is now on the Board with play commencing next weekend 27/28 May. Also on that weekend will be a visit by the East Maitland Travelling Bowlers who will play with members on Saturday afternoon commencing at 12.30 pm for a 1.00 pm start.

They will join with the Sunday Mixed Bowlers, Sunday morning commencing at 9.30 am for a 10.00 am start.

Nomination sheets are on the board.

WHEN I was growing up in Newcastle it was common for people to say on a particularly cold day that “it must be snowing on Sugarloaf”.

Considering that it snowed there briefly in 1965 and 1975, there must have been an awful lot of disappointed weather watchers in Newcastle.

Alternatively, some were very excited to have been proved right, at least twice in their life.

Fortunately the Thursday Walkers were not disappointed with the weather on their day at Mount Sugarloaf.

The upper reaches of Great Sugar Loaf are accessed by road through the Lake Macquarie suburb of West Wallsend.

There are a number of walks leading from various car parks.

We drove to the top car park and did a loop walk around the mountain and then climbed up to the summit.

Now this may not be a great feat in the annals of “summitting”, but it was a good cardio workout nevertheless.

From the summit there is a wonderful 360 degree view of the lower Hunter, taking in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and surrounds.

Our second walk took us around the mountain through woodland dominated by Angophora, Red Bloodwood,

White Mahogany and Spotted Gum as well as a diverse mid level of native grasses such as Kangaroo Grass.

Some gravity defying rock formations also caught our eye.

It was great to welcome and meet so many new walkers and I hope everyone enjoyed the walk as much as I. Apologies to the grammar pedants out there with my use of summit as a verb.

If it’s okay for swimmers “to medal”, then it’s OK for us “to summit”.

Besides it will probably be the one and only time I get to use the term in association with myself.

Ms GH, Raymond Terrace Dear MS GH, AH, CAMPING. The second great Australian dream after home ownership. In fact, given our current housing crisis, it may become the first great Australian dream. Kids will save their pocket money in order to buy a three by three metre plot in their parents’ backyard and pitch a yurt.

Camping means different things to different people, so I’d be asking a few more questions before you commit.

Do they mean the sort of camping where you stock up at BCF with every contraption known to man and then pitch your tent on a car-space sized area for $35 a night?

Lots of people like camping grounds, but I can’t understand why you’d want to sleep in a synthetic pyramid, wear your thongs into the communal shower so you don’t get ringworm, or cook in the ‘food hygiene rules do not apply’ camp kitchen.

Or are they ‘real’ campers?

This involves living off the land. You basically wear camouflage gear, and your camping equipment looks like something out of MASH. You spear a bush turkey for dinner and then eat it raw because no one has succeeded in the fire-making efforts portrayed by Bear Grylls (with his soft stubble and impeccable attire, even though he’s just wrested the sound guy who is dressed up as a bear – sorry, I digress).

The toilet is a spade and a eucalyptus leaf.

You sit around on camp chairs and start dozing off until someone says, “Didn’t that brutal killer Malcolm Naden have a cabin near here?”

Do you find either of these options appealing, GH? If, even after my warnings, you throw caution to the wind, take note of all motels within a 50km radius. You just never know when your group of happy little campers will turn feral.

Well, we’ll soon find out when an underwater clean up takes place next month.

“When MidCoast Council carried out a survey of the sea bed ahead of the new wharf being built this year, they discovered all sorts of things have been dumped in the river from shopping

trolleys to old bicycles,” Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger said.

Salvage diver Suzanne Fieberg, who carried out the original survey, will be back with a dive buddy to scour the river bottom from the Ogden Street ramp to the Singing Bridge on Wednesday 21 June.

Of particular emphasis will be the stretch of river near the hotel.

By Margie TIERNEY STUDENTS from Karuah Public School have good reason to be excited after being chosen to take part in this year’s ‘Star Struck’ entertainment extravaganza in Newcastle.

‘Star Struck’ is an exciting showcase of dance, drama and music performed to a live orchestra by students from Kindergarten to Year 12. a community project.

The Environmental Division of the Council has come up with 50% of the dive cost, the local Lions Club has put in another $500 dollars and the CTC has come to the party with the remaining $100 needed to make it happen.

The Council Garbage sector has agreed to waive the tip fees.

A number of local boat owners have offered their services for free along with the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club.

By Ann SCULLY OUR local Rugby side clashed with the Old Bar Clams in Round 6 of the Lower Mid North Competition last Saturday at TRAD Oval, Old Bar resulting in a 32-0 exciting win for the Myall Coast Mudcrabs who fought hard for their win throughout the whole game.

Heading to Old Bar with a full side and two reserves

on the bench ensured the relief of player fatique and possible injuries and if the Muddies can maintain these player numbers, they could well be a surprise team in this Competition.

The Mudcrabs meshed together for the entire game displaying exacting lineouts and with huge success in the scrums, especially those that were fed by their opposition.

Newcastle District Singles Championship Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club

By Lynda RICHARDS SOCIAL bowls played on 16 May, one game of Triples and three games of Fours.

On Rink 2 Lynda Richards, Sheril Johnson, Olive McKeown and Pat Baker had a convincing win against Francis Betar, Pam Gilchrist, Lily Smith and Lynne Green 24 v 12.

A similar story on Rink 3 where Bev Dunn played “swinger”, a lead for both sides.

The team consisting of Kerry Faber, Bev Stephens and Karen McPhie (a new skip) scored 25 beating Christine Fossey, Bev Rhodes and Deyonne Page by 14 shots.

The triples game on Rink 4 saw Dale Winter, (who usually plays skip requesting a change of position to being lead), Jill McBride and Karen Green just going down to Lesley Kibble, Anne Mackenzie and Wendy Jones by 3 shots, 16 v 19.

Most comments of the day were how well Lesley played considering she hasn’t bowled for a long time.

Another tight contest on Rink 6 Pauline Perry, Jo Younghusband, Kathie Rimmer and Sandra Leisemann 18 defeating Wilma Drake, Bette Saillard, Carol Hayden and Maynie Roberts 16.

The winners of the day with the highest score were Karen McPhie’s team.

THE annual westerly winds added a touch of seasonal reality during the first piscatorial weekend outing which treats club members to their personal hobby.

The weekend 12-14 May 2017 proved to be very popular amongst members and their guests for the start of the new angling season.

The mystery fish drawn was a traglin and no traglin were weighed during the weekend outing, compounding the mystery fish prize until next outing.

A great family effort was conveyed from the Wheaton family.

Mother and daughter won their divisions and dad was a major contender in his

division as well and produced the new season current biggest species, a bream.

The winning angler for the junior division was Daisy Wheaton catching flathead, a whiting and a bream.

Making mum happy on Mother’s Day, but not to be outdone, the ladies angling division winner was Donna Wheaton with a great catch of bream.

The ladies’ angling division running up winner was Gail Bartlett.

The men’s division runner up angler for the first of the club’s season was Robert Bartlett with a great swag of species including tarwhine, groper, flathead, tailor and bream.

The weekend’s angling champion and men’s division winner was Andrew Sharp who won the first of the

Format for play was a two games of triples.

Robyn Beaumont made it to the finals being beaten by Natasha Scott from Raymond Terrace 25 v 11.

Congratulations Robyn, a great effort against one of the “legends of bowls”.

Good luck to the four teams attending the State Carnival hosted by Warilla Bowling Club.

Play commencing on 22 May the final to be played on the 26 May. Social bowls as usual for those not attending the Carnival.

THE forever popular social darts evening has been a roaring success.

With the winter winds teasing us to compete within the constraints of indoor sports, the 7pm Thursday night social tournament sounds like just the treat we all need.

Thursday 11 May 2017 utilised the mixed doubles teams format for the evening

four game social tournament.

The ladies’ highest score for the evening was 100 points, achieved from Gail Bartlett. Great Effort.

Graham Lawler won the men’s highest score competition with 128 well earned points.

The mixed doubles runner up team members were Gail Bartlett and Geoff Smith.

The winning mixed doubles team members for the evening were Harry Pratten and Trevor Peirson.

Local Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club

IN a thoroughly enjoyable end to our bowling this week, the Karuah RSL Bowling Club ran a successful mixed pairs competition on Sunday.

The day saw a delicious morning tea, followed by a chockablock green of men and women bowlers.

Two games of 12 ends each saw some fierce but fun competition with prizes awarded in two main divisions.

While there were many prizes awarded, the two big winners were the teams of Angie and Jim Healey and Bill and Pauline Cummings.

Valuable prizes in sponsor dollars will see the winners spending up big at Karuah’s businesses who always so generously support both our club and the wider Karuah community.
