LOCAL RSL representatives joined students at ANZAC Commemorative assemblies last week to honour the memory of Australia’s fallen soldiers.

Bulahdelah Central School Captain Maddison Boyd said it was a special opportunity to acknowledge the Anzac spirit.

“I was very proud to lead the school community in this special remembrance ceremony,” she said.

“It was about coming together to reflect on the significance of ANZAC Day and honour all those who have served.”

ANZAC Day, there’s plenty happening ahead of the traditional commemoration service on 25 April.

“On Friday 20 April at 10.30 am the Tea Gardens RSL Annual ANZAC Bowls Day for “Homes for Heroes” will be held at the Tea Gardens Country Club,” Jennefer Ross-Henry, said.

“There are no green fees but $10 entry will include a sausage sizzle.”

Peter Sinclair Gardens Aged Care Facility at Hawks Nest will hold an early ANZAC Day service on Monday 23 April starting at 10am.

All are welcome.

On Anzac Day, the day will start with the traditional dawn services.

For those in the Myall, the day starts at 6am in ANZAC Park on Marine Drive in Tea Gardens followed by a breakfast at the Country Club.

10am will see the March start down Ogden

Street to ANZAC Park for the commemoration services.

Lunch will be served at the Club starting around 12.30pm.

Cost, $10 per head for over 15 year olds.

The Bulahdelah dawn service will started at 6am at the Cenotaph.

Those wishing to march should gather at the hospital at 10.15am with another service at the Cenotaph at 11am.

And at Karuah at 5.50am, the march commences from Tony King’s Garage (on the Old Pacific Highway) continues along the Pacific Highway for the

At each of the ceremonies, students and guests laid wreaths before the sounding of the Last Post and a minute silence, allowing students to pay their respects to the 8000 soldiers who gave their lives at Gallipoli and those who served in later conflicts.

“Many of those who didn’t come home were not much older than us, and these commemorations remind us of the sacrifices that were made,” Maddison said.

The service will conclude at 7.00am followed by another March to the Karuah RSL District Car Park for breakfast at the club.

For the late risers another Memorial Service will be held at the Memorial Wall in Karuah followed by lunch at the Karuah RSL. And of course after lunch at your local RSL, you won’t want to miss another ANZAC Day Tradition - Two Up, Come in Spinner.

Graduates day to shine Years of academic commitment have come to an end for a group of Myall Coast young adults who recently graduated from the University of Newcastle.

YEARS of academic commitment have come to an end for a group of Myall Coast young adults who recently graduated from the University of Newcastle.

Donning academic gowns and mortarboards for the formal occasion, the graduates were all smiles as they celebrated the milestone achievement in their educational journeys.

Mitchell Blanch, who proudly collected a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Class II Division 1 Honours, said all the hard work had paid off.

“After five long years I can finally say I’m an engineer,” he said.

“I am now working in project management, maintaining power stations and chemical plants throughout Australia.”

Completing their degrees through the Faculty of Education and Arts, Hayley Follett and Casey Gooch were each awarded a Bachelor of Teaching in Early Childhood and Primary with Honours.

Brittany Dorney, who collected a Bachelor of Business, and Daniel Sahyoun who received his Bachelor of Communication with Distinction, were also amongst the university’s newest graduates.

With one degree now under their belts, Brittany and Daniel are both continuing with their

If you have resigned, in certain circumstances it is possible that you may have unfair dismissal remedies available to you.

A resignation is not legally effective if expressed “in the heat of the moment” or when an employee is in a state of emotional stress or mental confusion such that they could not reasonably be understood to be conveying a real intention to resign.

If an employer accepts a resignation made “in the heat of the moment” the resignation may be characterised as termination of employment at the initiative of the employer and could result in the employee having unfair dismissal rights, allowing the employee to be reinstated or compensated. If a resignation is made “in the heat of the moment”,

the employer should clarify or confirm with the employee after a reasonable time that the employee genuinely intended to resign.

Further, a resignation that is forced by conduct of the employer will also be considered a dismissal. In deciding whether an employer has forced a resignation, the Court will consider whether the employer engaged in conduct with the intention of bringing the employment to an end or whether termination of the employment was the result of the employer’s conduct such that the employee had no effective or real choice but to resign. Again, in these circumstances, the employee may have unfair dismissal remedies available and may be able to seek an order for reinstatement or compensation.

Blue Light Shines

By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH School of Arts Hall was rocking with dozens of excited children who danced the night away at the Blue Light Disco last week.

Flashing lights and glow sticks lit up the faces of the youngsters during the funfilled event, illuminating a mass of beaming smiles.

As non-stop music including blaring renditions of the Macarena and Katy Perry’s popular hits roared around the hall, the energetic

crowd bopped along on the dancefloor in almost perfect formation.

The event was organised and funded by the Bulahdelah Blue Light Committee, with plenty of volunteers on hand to ensure the children enjoyed the night.

Committee member Senior Constable Ash Ray said the “kids had a ball”.

“We are very happy with the turnout and the great atmosphere that was created by the community,” he said.

people of all ages are doing something for the kids and come and support these nights.”

If the success of the disco is anything to go by, the Community Fun Day to be held on Saturday 28 April is sure to be a treat.

Competitions, displays and a host of interactive activities suitable for all ages are bound to delight.

Ash said although the day will be a Blue Light organised activity, “it is a community event where everyone gets involved”.

The Community Day will run from 1-4pm in Wade Park.

Dear News Of The Area, ONCE again our Raft Race held on Easter Sunday was a great success. The setting and weather couldn’t have been better with some very innovative floating contraptions.

All were cheered on by family and friends.

The children then had their handicapped Easter Egg Hunt, with more than enough chocolate eggs.

Our raffle was drawn by Sandy Snape and the winners were. Terri-Anne Howard, Cooloon St. Hawks Nest; (Leather Bag); Marnie Corr of Pindimar Road, Pindimar, took the knitted throw and Mark Hill of Cunningham Street, Pindimar took the

leather painting.

On a disappointing note it was discovered that a person, or persons unknown, went to our Rural Fire Service shed and dismantled the water pipework leading from the two water tanks.

This happened around the Tuesday after Easter so if you saw anyone entering or leaving the premises without it being a fire call, please let us know.

Sun Shines on Grey Fest

By Margie TIERNEY ORGANISERS of the inaugural GreyFest are taking a well-earned rest after a staging a weekend with something for everyone.

“Many people enjoyed the Grey Nomads Golf, the evening with local historian, Jan Winn and John “Stinker” Clarke,“ Lorraine Lock said.

“The Stalls and musical entertainment together with Bob the Bush Poet at both Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens also proved popular.”

GreyFest, following on from the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras, incorporated some of the most popular events from the past two years and added some new highlights through Seniors Week.

Mrs JL, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs JL, YOU know, years ago, my boss made all the staff attend yoga for team building. The problem was, we didn’t want to team build as we’d been stuck in an office all week. We wanted to drink and talk about each other, like normal workmates. It was doomed from the start.

Now, when I think of a meditation session, I think of a guru named Sven (dressed in white) saying something about the light radiating through my body. There’s some bergamot oil in a diffuser and some whale music and basically all I need to do is curl up in a foetal position while Sven whispers sweet nothings about chakras aligning. It involves no concentration, no anger, and no guttural sounds, because meditation is supposed to be calming. After a meditation session, you should feel as though you’ve had a massage and six mojitos.

Your experience doesn’t sound relaxing at all. How can you be relaxed when you are facing complete strangers and making weird noises? Are you sure you went to the right room? Imagine if your meditation session was actually down the hall, and instead you accidentally entered the Advanced Anger Management class. Did the other people look angry? Were some of them wearing home detention bracelets instead of Lava Rock bracelets? I think you need to contact the program organiser and double check the details. If it was a meditation session, then perhaps you will start to feel that anger bubbling to the surface, and you will be primed for the next instalment.

Last week I went to a meditation session and the woman running it said that we had to get our anger out. This involved bending from the waist and making guttural sounds, which made me feel very self conscious. PS: I wasn’t angry, just stressed.

Pigs Fly in Tea Gardens

Well not quite, but they certainly ran like little rabbits at the second annual Pig Races at the Tea Gardens Country Club last Saturday.

Last year it rained cats and dogs, but this year the sun shone down on the event and hundreds turned out for the family fun day.

There were six pig races, each one sponsored by a local business.

by Stuart Sinclair from Ray White behind the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Cup. There was so much enthusiasm on and off the track you could have been forgiven you were at a Randwick Race meet with Winx as the lure.

But the big winners were the local community groups, the Hawks Junior Rugby League Club and the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club.

“Last year we raised $3,000 for the Surf Club, this year we’re hoping to top that,” Club Manager, Warren Gooley told News Of The Area.

And top that they did, the day raising $7,000 for the Surf Club.

“We’ve expanded the day this year, to include mechanical bull riding, exotic confectionary, face painting and live music,” Warren said.

In With such a great turnout this year, you’d be a good chance to bet on the Pig Races being back to fly again in Tea Gardens next year.

Trail of Autumn Treats THE Great Lakes Food Trail returns on Sunday 22 April to showcase the region’s sensational autumn produce.

Buffalo ice-cream, wood-fired artisan breads, succulent pork and crisp local wines are some of the tasty offerings available along the route.

This season’s event coincides with World Earth Day which focuses on eliminating single-use plastics and reducing pollution, values embraced by members of the trail.

Bungwahl Public School, who joined the trail last season, will be putting the Earth Day principles into practice by

running workshops to teach participants how to create reusable cling wraps from beeswax.

Visitors will also be able to tour the schools award winning bush tucker and permaculture gardens and purchase treats made from the produce.

Tianjara Eco House, Old Inn Road Vineyard, Topi Open Range, Wootton’s Brush Turkey Café, Billabong Cottage and Great Lakes Paddocks are also amongst the local producers who will be opening their gates to public.

Coordinator Julie Steepe from Bulahdelah’s Lucy Land Merino Farm said the trail

emphasises the ethical and chemical free approach utilised by a network of local producers.

“It is about like-minded, ethical producers who are working together to showcase this great region and everything it has to offer,” she said.

“We have a huge variety of great ethical food, and just like the diversity of our landscape, our produce is just as diverse.”

The Food Trail is a selfdrive tour of the region’s farms, gardens, wineries and cafes with more than a dozen stops along the route stretching from Bulahdelah to Forster.

THE owners of the Tea Gardens Hotel, Ben and Emily Hanson, have already made a good impression on the community in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, after only a year of owning the Hotel, and making some great changes.

TWENTY darts players this week and a three team playoff for first and second.

Paul Bennett and Darren Rapley were the eventual winners and Lyn

Peirson and Michael Russom were runners up.

Last weeks fishing competition was the third last for this year and some great fish were caught.

Trevor Peirson was the men’s winner and the runner up was Geoff Smith.

Michelle Cole was the

ladies winner with the highest points overall and Gail Bartlett was runner up. Saxon Rapley was the junior winner and Poppy Rapley was runner up.

Next outing is the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Challenge.

7 APRIL: Because of work commitments by some players, the final of the Club Major Pairs Championship was played today on an immaculately prepared grass green.

The team of Peter Gurney and John Parkinson were taking on the former champions, Richard Lee and Sean Mearrick.

The Mearrick team were quick out of the blocks and by the 4th end held a handy 8-0 lead.

By this time, most of the pundits were shaking their heads and thinking, “here we go again”.

also thought otherwise and emphatically won the next five ends to draw level.

The game was there for the taking with both teams neck and neck to the 19th.

A “2” at the penultimate end to Peter and John gave them a handy 3 shot lead going into the last.

They eventually ran out the winners, by taking the last end.

The final score Peter and John 17, Richard and Sean 13.

11 April Today we had 42 bowlers, including visitors from Wamberal, Earlwood and Bulahdelah, enjoying our great autumn weather and

our Tea Gardens hospitality.

Three teams went through undefeated; Keith Smith’ team on 53 points, Brian Emmett’s team on 54 and the winners on 55 points Henry Dallas, Ron James and Daryl Martin.

The Myall Restaurant and Bistro winner was Keith Smith.

A big thank you to Jason from the restaurant for their continued support!

13 April The continuing warm weather and the start of the school holidays possibly deterred some players from competing in the usual Friday Open Pairs competition.

For those that played, it was a beautiful day enjoyed by all.

Bragging rights went to Bill Moon and Peter Cheney who notched-up a great win

with 32 Points.

As Sunday Bowls is in recess for the time being, those players who normally play on a Sunday are more than welcome to avail themselves of playing in the Friday Open Pairs competition.

In other news; Saturday Pennant information day will be held on Saturday 21 April.

This is an important day for all Pennant players who have indicated their ability to play.

It will commence at 10.00 am.

The day will start with information and questions; the games programme and bowls stickers distributed.

This will be followed with a selection trial through to 12.00 noon and then a sausage sandwich. Teams

scoring 4/0.

The metre men for the Roos in the first half were David Dodd, Mitch Turvey, Cap/Coach Daniel Evans, Josh Page, Mitch O’Bryan, Jack Fleming, Brock Cole, Jake Blanch, Tim Johnson, Matt Croese, Aiden Bills, Kane Chisholme, Justin Anderson and Ben Feeney.

15 minutes into the first half and the Roos try maker Josh Page over the line and with a successful conversion from Sam Croese to but the Roos in front 6/4.

The Magpies countered 15minutes later with a successfully converted try to take the score to 10/6 Maggies way.

The Roos veteran Dwayne Fleming was the next one over the line with another successful conversion from Sam Croese to put the Roos back in front 12/10.

The big hitters for the Roos in the first half were Matt Croese, Justin Anderson, Dwayne Fleming, Sam and Jack Croese, Dan Evans, Josh Page, Tim Johnson, David Dodd, Mitch Turvey, Jake Blanch, Ben Feeney, Aiden Bills, Kane Chisholme, Simi Asomua and Adam Crampton.

way.

But the Roos newcomer Aiden Bills was over for his first try for the Roos just on the half time hooter to take the score to 16 all at half time.

The second half started fast with the Roos Dwayne Fleming being held up over the line. Then only 2 minutes in Aiden Bills was in for his second try for the day. With Sam Croese converting to put the Roos in front again at 22/16.

Making the Karuah Roos the Winner of the Edmonds/ Morten Shield for the first time out of 4years that we have been playing for it. Well done to all the boys for bringing it home hopefully to stay for a few years.

On the final end Loretta’s ladies had a lead of 2 shots.

This end was won by Lynn’s side gaining 2 shots and resulting in a draw 15 all.

Great bowling by all. Good to have visiting bowler Elana Ashley (from Taren Point Bowling Club) with us again.

On Rink 4 a decisive victory to Robyn Beaumont, Sheril Johnson and Julie Kennedy 19 v Christine Fossey, Lorraine Murphy and Lynda Richards 9.

Julie’s side led all the way in this match. A similar story on Rink 6 with Wilma Drake,

Pam Gilchrist and Karen McPhie 26 defeating Lyn Nightingale, Carol Hayden and Jill McBride 10.

Following play we all joined in to wish Lily Smith a happy birthday.

Lily celebrated a special “0” birthday on the 7th April.
