By Margie TIERNEY OUR local Myall Coast Rotary Club has celebrated the ‘Chinese New Year of the Dog’ by joining forces with fellow Rotarians in Newcastle and the Lower Hunter, to help organise the recent Newcastle Lantern Festival.

It’s a big job by any standard, lighting nearly two kilometres of Newcastle’s foreshore to guide the way for more than 20 thousand revellers. ‘’The participating Rotary Clubs were acting as organisers, marshals and as sellers in the many stalls selling solarpowered Chinese lanterns and stuffed toy dogs,” Rotary’s Ian Mackenzie

“The local Rotary Club of Myall Coast participated by sending down nine Club members to help out on the day last month.”

The Lantern Walk had its origin in the 2015 Rotary International theme of ‘Light up Rotary’.

During the late afternoon and evening,

visitors were entertained by performances from Marching Bands, Arobatic Groups and many others.

The event came to a spectacular finish with a huge fireworks display over the harbour.

Funds raised from the Festival were donated to the Mission to Seafarers in

Newcastle.

The Mission assists sailors visiting the Port of Newcastle with a ‘home away from home’ at the Seafarers Centre at Wickham.

Currently over 40,000 seafarers visit the Port of Newcastle and over 13,000 use the services offered by the Mission each year, with transport to the Centre, shopping, banking,

HAWKS Nest / Tea Gardens locals are celebrating this month as works near completion on the Hawks Nest Bridge Club’s community building, located next to the Hawks Nest shopping centre.

This major project was achieved thanks to a great amount of fundraising by the hardworking Bridge Club members, along with NSW Government funding and a $33,000 contribution from the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities fund.

The Stronger Communities fund was established by the NSW Government for merged Councils to assist the delivery of projects that improve community infrastructure and services.

MidCoast Council provided

the land for the project, assisted with the provision of the Grant and provided in-kind support.

According the Hawks Nest Bridge Club’s Charlie Shuetrim AM, the community building will “provide significant social, cultural and economic benefits for decades to come”.

The project was initiated when focus groups held by Council identified the lack of appropriate community buildings as a significant issue for the Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens area. With almost half of the Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest population aged over 65 years, the

need for community space for activities that support the inclusion, engagement, enthusiasm, participation and contribution of older people is vitally important.

The community space is designed to hold 120 people and is available for use by other community Arts and Cultural Groups in the Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens area. The types of activities envisaged will mean this is a resource for the whole community, and people of all ages, providing a real community hub.

The 2016 Lantern Walk raised money for a new upgrade to the kitchen at the Seafarers Centre.

This year’s event will also fund sleeper chairs which will allow the seafarers much needed rest while in port.

The 16th annual love-in for everything with an engine, attracted cars and bikes from 50 Clubs around the State.

“These cars are like art,” said Hot Rod enthusiast Robert Kemp from Port Macquarie.

Robert’s powder blue beauty, took six years to build, made up of various vehicles with a chassis from a 1927 Chrysler, as well as parts of a 1940 Chev and an A Model pickup.

For car lover Ronnie Paton from Johns River near Taree, his passion for motor vehicles is a family affair.

“It’s in the DNA,” Ronnie said.

Tony Oates owns a 1959 MK1 Healy Sprite.

“It took me seven years to get it to this, it was in the panel beater for four and a half years,” Tony laughed.

More than $40,000 later Tony is very philosophical about his love for his car, “My wife looks at it as therapy, she knows where I am.”

Tony belongs to the Rough Red Car Club from Baulkham Hills in Sydney’s north west and travelled up to Hawks Nest with members of his family.

Gary Mead’s Ford GT 40, drew plenty of attention: the car just 40 inches off the ground.

In family law matters, judges often provide preliminary views and encourage parties to contemplate settlement. A judge might make comments that appear to favour one of the parties over the other, or that appear to indicate a prejudgment of an issue in dispute before the presentation of evidence.

In the case of Darley & Darley [2016], the mother sought to set aside Court Orders on the basis that she had agreed to Orders by consent because the judge had placed undue duress and influence on the parties to settle, by highlighting the benefits to each of them of reaching their own agreement.

The Full Court rejected this argument, making reference to the principles set out in the

Family Law Act, that where possible “parents should agree about the future parenting of their children”; and determining that any encouragement by a judge to explore settlement is in line with the contemplation of the Act, and consistent with the judge’s duties.

This view is consistent with views previously expressed by the High Court, which has stated “At the trial level…judges…intervene in the conduct of cases to an extent that may surprise a person who came to Court expecting a judge to remain, until the moment of pronouncement of judgment, as inscrutable as the Sphinx…Judges express tentative views…Judges are not expected to wait until the end of a case before they start thinking about the issues, or to sit mute while evidence is advanced and arguments are presented…”.

Neryl’s Last Hurrah and a New Team

ON a picture perfect day recently, over ninety excited Probians travelled via The Spirit of Port Stephens across the sparkling waters of the Bay to Soldiers Point to celebrate President Neryl

Neryl had served on the Committee as the Social Director followed by VicePresident and President and whilst she is still on the Committee, Neryl can now relax in her role as the Club’s Past President.

Probus Club of Hawks Nest & District’s Social Director – Peter Cameron organized the trip taking into account every minor detail throughout the day, with the boat leaving the ferry wharf in Tea Gardens at 10.30am, arriving back to the wharf at 4.30pm.

Advocating for Growth MIDCOAST Business Chamber is working in conjunction with MidCoast Council to continue to boost the region’s economic growth.

The collaboration is focusing on supporting existing economic strengths, identifying and implementing high priority regional projects and communicating the process.

Speaking at a meeting with the Business Chamber last week, Council’s Community Spaces and Services Director Paul

De Szell said each of the MidCoast communities has a distinct culture.

“Maintaining what we have is our priority and the employment opportunities are the key drivers,” he said.

According to the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research, 6,537 businesses operate in the MidCoast region, which has a Gross Regional Product (GRP) of $3.27 billion.

Health Care and Social Assistance is the largest employment sector, accounting for 18.5 percent

of the 31.549 local jobs, followed by 13.6 percent in Retail Trade, and 10.1 percent in Accommodation and Food Services.

According to Council, an average of 2,737 visitors stay in the region each night, accounting for 19 percent of the GRP. MidCoast Business Chamber Vice-President John Sahyoun said the collaboration is about “big picture issues” across the entire region.

I’M not sure what your occupation is, but I’m guessing you have never been responsible for the social, emotional, academic and physical development of up to 30 children for over 30 hours each week (and that is disregarding the many hours of preparation, report writing, professional development and so on).

Have you spent much time in a classroom, Mrs MR? I used to be a Year 1 parent helper for just one hour a day. At the end of that hour I would stumble towards the exit gate with an excruciating headache and a nervous twitch.

Small children are like rabid dogs. It is very important that you don’t get down on their level or they will quite literally attack you and you’ll never get back up again. Don’t let those cute smiles, innocent eyes and podgy limbs fool you. You are basically in a room surrounded by miniature Kim Jong-uns. Does that sound like fun to you?

Then there are the school discos, where poor Mrs Morcombe with her dodgy hip has to stomp along to ‘We Will Rock You’ while you have a bottle of red, a pizza and a whinge at the local tavern. Or what about the school camps where parents like you neglect to mention that little Timothy has a habit of sleepwalking and doesn’t have the mental aptitude to find a toilet, instead choosing to vomit, after a big dose of camp-issued Bolognese, in another kid’s bed. You are also the parent who picks Timothy up half an hour late and Mrs Morcombe has to play babysitter as well as educator, because your job is somehow more important than hers.

Teachers should receive nothing but admiration, Mrs MR. If you have to listen to Timothy stutter his way through ‘My Dog Rex’ every night until he works his way up to ‘My Sister Sue’, then so be it.

Off to See the Wizard

A STROLL along The Yellow Brick Road is bound to delight audiences this week when Bulahdelah Central School stages its production of The Wacky Wizard of Oz. Year 10 student Scarlett Battle transforms into the lead role of Dorothy with three clicks of her shiny red heels, and sets off on a magical journey to Emerald City with her friends Toto, the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man. From the moment the tornado touches down, the stunning set designs, energetic choreography and dazzling costumes will blow the audience Somewhere Over the Rainbow and into the fantasy Land of Oz. After months of rehearsals, Year 12 cast member Katie Nolan said all the hard work has definitely paid off.

“The talent, enthusiasm and energy on stage make this show a fun experience for all ages,” she said.

“It has a great story, filled with lots of magic every step of the way.”

The show features all the classic tunes from the 1939 film with the

addition of several contemporary songs, ensuring the audience will be captivated from the opening chorus to the final scene.

Under the guidance of secondary Drama Teacher Mrs Vanessa Shultz, senior students took on all the responsibilities of directing, costume and set design, choreography, music, lighting and programs.

Katie said she learnt first-hand the huge amount of work that goes into producing a large-scale show.

“It has been a whole team effort,” she said.

“It was a good opportunity to work together and develop our leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills which will be useful in many other areas.”

The production features students from Kindergarten to Year 12, including a talented on-stage cast of 40, a vibrant 30-voice choir and a large technical support crew.

Evening performances will run from 13 – 15 March in the School Hall commencing at 6.00pm.

LET the luck of the Irish rain down upon you this Saturday, for it is St Patrick’s Day to be sure, to be sure.

The Tea Gardens Hotel will be covered in shamrocks and fifty shades of green for the day, and they are even going to look after your little leprechauns as well.

The night before, the Tea Gardens Hotel will be hosting a Kids Disco from 5.30pm to 8pm with free finger food available.

morning, face painting will be available from 11.30am through to 1.30pm.

Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes will be calling from 2pm with a bagpipes performance followed by the exceptional Phil McKnight playing a combination of Rock n’ Roll, Blues and Country songs that will no doubt have an added Celtic theme for the day, which will help those glasses of Guinness go down that little bit easier.

The fun won’t be ending there though.

From 7pm, the talented Kevin O’Hara will hold centre stage and bring St Patrick’s Day to a delightfully harmonious end for another year.

Bowlers recognise start of Footy Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club

7 March A nice field of 49 bowlers today enjoyed 2 games on both greens.

With the start of the football season imminent, players were invited to show their support for their teams by wearing football club colours.

A visitor, Kevin O’Brien from Maryborough Queensland, entered into the spirit of the day wearing a Broncos strip.

Brave man!

As usual the competition was very strong with 5 teams winning both games but on 57 points Dennis Ashbridge, Graham Kelly and Tom Short edged out the Bill Heylbut and Greg Pearson teams.

9 March Eighteen players enjoyed themselves in the Friday Open Pairs competition today.

The Club welcomed another Queensland bowler, Terry Rothford.

The competition each Friday is really fierce and Terry fitted in beautifully winning the bragging rights of the day with Brian Emmet they had a plus 32.

Second place went to the Triples combination of Bill Moon, Dave Perry and Neil Kibble.

10 March The Club Major Pairs Championships started today with two matches being determined.

Daryl Martin and Col Amos played Anthony Grant and Barry Drayton and in the other game Scott Beaumont and Jeff Baker played a team, who after the result, preferred to remain anonymous.

Daryl and Col won their match 23-16 and, suffice it to say, Scott and Jeff were untroubled to win theirs.

11 March Beautiful Spring weather greeted the 14 players competing in the Sunday Mixed Bowls competition.

Thursday 8th March: A good turn up for Thursday bowls. Format for play Fours, Triples (with Lyn Nightingale playing “swinger lead”) and Pairs. The Fours game was a last practice session for our two Grade 4 Pennant teams

The pairs was a contest between Bev Dunn and Sandra Leisemann v Ingrid Luck and Karen Green. This was a very even match from start to finish and ended in a draw 17 all. The Triples was a different story a good win for Lyn Nightingale, Dorothy Thompson and Maynie

Wild Dog Control - 1080 Baiting The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be undertaking a trapping and 1080 ground baiting for wild dog control within Myall Lakes, Ghin-doo-ee and Wallingat National Parks.

This baiting program is being carried out as part of a broader cooperative control program coordinated by the Mid Coast Local Land Services (LLS) to mitigate the impacts of wild dogs on stock and wildlife. Cooperative partners include LLS, Forestry Corp, Mid Coast Council and the Bulahdelah & District Wild Dog Control Group.

OUR Australian cricketers continue to make headlines for all the wrong reasons, but not so our local juniors.

The season has just ended for the Karuah Tea Gardens District Cricket Club having run the very successful MILO in2Cricket program over the past few months.

“There were 15 participants, 14 boys and one girl, ranging in age from 5 years to 10 years,” Secretary Colin McCarthy said.

“They were taught the basics of holding a bat, bowling, catching and most importantly playing sport to have fun with their mates.”

“They also participated in a series of games, called T20

T20 is a similar format to the T20 game seniors play with all players getting a bat and bowl, fielding in different positions each over.

The club will run the program again in 2018, the season starting around late October.

It will be open to children aged 5 to 12 years, boys and girls.

Registration instructions will be posted on Facebook.

“With the NSW Government’s bonus sports voucher this makes sport more accessible and affordable for everyone,” Colin said.

The club will be looking to run a number of programs including the introduction into cricket, MILO in2Cricket and MILO T20 Blast programs,, if the numbers permit.
