By Margie TIERNEY AFTER months of planning and weeks of hard work, the Tea Gardens Primary School’s Easter Art and Craft Expo is over for another year.

As they’ve done for the past 41 years, volunteers and members of the School’s P&C Association worked tirelessly to ensure the five day event was once again a great success.

President of the P&C, Melisa Brown told News Of The Area, “It was a little quieter than in previous years, probably because of the beautiful weather, everyone going to the beach.”

Top Shot Snapped KATERINA Poniris has been named as a finalist in the prestigious Moran Contemporary National Photographic competition and the Bulahdelah Central School student couldn’t be prouder.

“I am very shocked, but very excited that my photograph has been selected, it is such an honour to be recognised at this level,” she said Katerina’s work is amongst 25 photographs which made the final round of the contest in the Year

The Year 10 student said she captured her photograph titled ‘Something About Phil’ during a family trip to Seal Rocks.

“It was a completely natural shot,” she said.

“I saw the opportunity and there was good lighting, Phil didn’t even realise I took the picture.”

The young photographer has a folio bursting with thousands of photographs which clearly show her eye for capturing unique details.

Katerina told News Of The Area a good picture “is about lighting, composition and idiosyncrasy”.

“Everything has the potential to make a good image, it is all about capturing that moment in time that will never again be repeated,” she said.

Katerina is currently studying photography as an elective subject at school under the guidance of teacher Mrs Tara Smith.

Photographers were invited to interpret “contemporary life in Australia” and the images selected as finalists feature a diverse range of subjects and locations from around the country.

Winners will be announced by the Moran Arts Foundation on 8 May.

The Australian Women’s fours lawns bowls team beat South Africa 18-16 in the final to take out the gold medal.

Held at the Broadbeach Bowls Club, a beautiful site overlooking the famous beach, for the first time in 12 years Australian lawn bowls won gold at a Commonwealth Games.

The team made it to the finals after beating Canada in the semifinals in what proved to be a tightly contested match, with the Aussies winning 10-9 against the Canadians.

Ms Scott spoke to News Of The Area, saying, “It is an unbelievable experience to be holding a gold medal with three of your good mates that are also your teammates.”

“We had a very tough games to get to the final and it didn’t get any easier in the final.”

Australian coach and himself a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Mr Kelvin Kerkow admitted the home ground advantage helped the team, saying in a statement, “Broadbeach is where the players have been participating, practicing and trialling in all conditions.”

Ms Scott who trains at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club was supported by many fans who have been closely following all her games and sending well wishes to her up the coast; an effort that has paid off with the ultimate in Commonwealth Games glory, a gold medal, being attained.

At the end of Day 5 competition, Australia was well ahead of the pack, and beating the traditional sporting foe, England to claim a medal tally of 106 which included 39 Gold, 33 Silver, and 34 Bronze.

The Applicants contracted the Respondents to arrange their wedding reception at a venue overlooking Sydney Harbour. At 4 PM on the big day a pipe burst directly above the venue.

The Respondents did not own the venue and did not cause the leak.

The Respondents notified the building Manager as soon as they became aware of the leak. The reception was briefly delayed, tablecloths were placed on the wet floor, the room reconfigured to avoid the water leak, and buckets collected dripping water.

The tribunal was satisfied the respondent had not breached its guarantee to provide the services with “due care and skill” because it took measures to alleviate the problem. It was however satisfied

that the water leak and slight delay made the reception not fit for purpose and the guarantee was unaffected by the fact the respondent did not cause the leak.

No award was made under the Australian Consumer law because there was no failure to use due care and skill and the Respondent had not caused the leak. Nevertheless $3,500 was awarded under s79N(a) of the Fair Trading Act 1987. Cafe Closes its Doors The Riverside Café in Bulahdelah served up their last shakes, cups of tea and freshly baked scones last week before closing their doors for the final time.

For the past two years, owners Stacey Brown and Troy Harvey greeted their customers with a smile and whipped up loads of tasty menu items from fresh local produce.

Stacey said they are going

to miss all the wonderful people they have met.

“Meeting so many lovely people has been a highlight,” she said.

“We have had some great times and it has been a lot of fun.”

In addition to the spectacular views across the Myall River, the family run business built a reputation for providing friendly service and excellent food, which

included their big breakfasts and Stacey’s famous Freakshakes.

“Thank you for a delicious breakfast this morning, it was perfect,” one customer recently posted on social media.

“Your daughters are a great asset, so friendly,” another stated.

Stacey, who is looking forward to spending more time with her family, said

making the decision to close the doors was a very difficult one to make.

“We gave it go, but reluctantly we have decided to close,” she said.

Lest We Forget On ANZAC Day we remember the fallen and also, with equal pride, those who served and still live.

ANZAC Day 2018 marks two significant anniversaries. The first is of course the 100th anniversary of the end of the “Great War”, in November 1918. On ANZAC Day, we particularly remember Gallipoli, as it was in this battle in 1915 that the ANZAC Spirit was forged.

The second significant anniversary is the 100th anniversary of the battle for Villers Bretonneux in France in April, 1918. A victory against the German Forces at Villers Bretonneux was against all odds. But the two Australian Brigades that attacked the Germans here in 1918 were successful, driving the Germans out of town and in-so-doing, significantly changed the tide of the war.

The attack on Villers Bretonneux commenced on the evening of April 24th, the eve of the 3rd anniversary of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign – a fact not lost on these two brigades.

Understanding the significance of this timing, they used their desperate determination to commemorate this day by ensuring a different outcome through seizing the town from the hands of the enemy. By dawn the following morning, April 25th, 1918, the Australians had broken through the German entrenchment and secured the town, ending the German offensive on the Somme. The town remained in Allied hands from thereon in.

DO you ever find yourself parked at traffic lights, or waiting to do a U-turn because despite the signs and the road blocks, you still think that you can turn right into Salamander Shopping Centre at that crazy intersection that nobody likes (except for one lone engineer with a quirky sense of humour) and you start singing, ‘Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage’?

I do. I do this frequently, because, dear Miss AG, we are just rats, circling aimlessly on the spinning wheel of life and that spinning wheel involves lots of opportunities to buy celebratory presents for celebratory occasions, even when we don’t feel like it.

Mother’s Day, though, is a bit of an exception. Mothers spend their lives doing things that aren’t a whole lot of fun. Sorting socks, cleaning, mowing lawns, waiting on the very uncomfortable seats at soccer training, holding down executive jobs, returning to make chicken soup with crusty bread rolls, joining committees, manning cake stalls, shuffling kids off to school, agonising over school assignments, starting paleo diets, stopping paleo diets, watching brain-dead shows at midnight because we are, quite literally, brain dead by that stage, and then waking up and doing it all again.

And all we ask for, Miss AG, is a bit of a sleep-in on Mother’s Day, followed by a corny card written by someone who clearly doesn’t know the meaning of the word Thesaurus, and perhaps an egg on toast. Forget the sprig of parsley. Forget the ‘sunny-side-up’ request. We will accept just about anything, as long as you leave us there, in the comfort of our bed for at least one hour longer than usual.

Easter is over and the doors are once again open at our local Tea Gardens Library with lots of activities coming up in April for both seniors and juniors.

EASTER is over and the doors are once again open at our local Tea Gardens Library with lots of activities coming up in April for both seniors and juniors.

AS part of NSW Seniors Week, an information morning will be held at the Library on Senior’s legal rights, advocacy and educational services available to our older citizens.

The presentation is being held on Wednesday 11 April from 10.30am for Morning Tea followed by the discussion at 11am.

The service is free, but bookings are preferred on

For the younger generation there’s a treat in store at the Library during the April School Holidays.

Librarians Chris Shelly and Carol Johnson are holding an Anzac Day Craft session on Wednesday 18 April from 2.30 to 3.30pm. ‘’With the approval of the RSL we’ve developed various modules to educate the children about Anzac Day and the Anzacs and the lifestyles of the people both here at home and serving overseas during that era” Chris Shelly said.

“It will cover, sending a care parcel to a World War One serviceman, making red

poppies and helping children develop little letters as if they were sending them to someone overseas.”

“It will help children get a feeling for what might have been useful during that era, like sending some soap, any food from home such as Anzac cookies,” Chris said.

“The Idea is that the children will have some empathy for what it would have been like to have nothing over there and receive something from home.”

The activity is suitable for children aged 5 to 11 years of age.

It’s a free afternoon, but again bookings are essential.

LOCAL and visitors in the Hawks Nest area have been praised by environmentalists for respecting a threatened

last year, the sand piles became home to around 200 Little Tern migrating to Port Stephens from Asia, providing what Jill described as, “A perfect nesting site for them with water, therefore food, on three sides and open sandy areas to lay their eggs.”

For three months, a group of volunteers monitoring the site counted 176 nests with

343 eggs.

“Of the 126 chicks counted 31 were confirmed to have fledged. Unfortunately this is less than is needed to sustain the population,” Jill said.

“The nesting here is however significant as their more usual nesting sites at the mouth of the Manning River and on the NSW South Coast failed this year.”

The local lace monitors – goannas - were the main predators, especially nearer the bush.

Jill also thanked the team led by shorebird enthusiast Neil Fraser who counted nests, eggs, chicks and juveniles three days a week, rain, hail and shine.

“I must say for me it was a privilege to have been involved,” Jill added.

“We hope the birds will return this October for the 2018 nesting season.”

Watermark Launched

By John SAHYOUN WALKS along the beach and lots of tea helped Port Stephens writer Joanna Atherfold Finn realise her long-held dream of having her first book published.

Watermark, containing a collection of short stories exploring relationships in coastal communities, was officially launched at the Newcastle Writers Festival last weekend.

Joanna said many of the fictitious stories in her book were influenced by the coastlines of Port Stephens.

“It was important to have that local connection to my area, and to my area of interest,” she said.

“The coast is never just a setting, it is also part of the story.”

In front of hundreds of people who crammed into Newcastle City Hall for the launch, acclaimed author

Robert Drewe described Watermark as having the “essential wow factor”.

“This book has a rare and precise power that speaks to us and seems real, we recognise something of our own lives in it,” he said.

From a boy with dyslexia who finds the right words in the ocean, a drifter and her son who discover the true meaning of home, to a widower coping with the aftermath of his wife’s death, each of the 11 interlinked stories reveal how people respond to the uncertainty and disorder of life-changing events.

Much like the characters in her book, Joanna’s own life has taken many unexpected twists and turns, resembling the constant movement of the changing tides along the coastlines that captivate her.

The turning point for Joanna was enrolling in a Communications degree as a mature aged student, reigniting her passion in creative writing and paving the way for Watermark, which came from the three and a half years she spent studying for her Doctorate.

She now happily balances writing, family life and tutoring students with

the abalone business she operates with her husband in Port Stephens, all of which relate to her writing.

“I’m immersed in the local fishing business, so the coastal characters are a dayto-day feature in my life,” she said.

“I write what I know, but I also write to find out what I don’t know, there is a point where imagination just takes over.”

Watermark is published by major international book publisher, Simon & Schuster.

“When I read coastal novels or short stories by other writers, they resonate with my own experiences and make me reflect on a coastal life,” Joanna said.

“I hope this book does the same for others.”

Pardon the pun, but members of Galleries in the Gardens are ‘egg-static’ after their fabulous Faberge inspired Easter weekend of activities.

PARDON the pun, but members of Galleries in the Gardens are ‘egg-static’ after their fabulous Faberge inspired Easter weekend of activities.

Local artist Sandy Needham created the amazing eggs which became the backdrop for the exhibition and hands on fun for children who visited the Tea Gardens Gallery.

“The Faberge eggs proved extremely popular and although they were only on display we could have sold them three times over,” Events Co-Ordinator Lee Anderson told News Of The Area.

“Dozens of children got into the swing of making jewelled their own Faberge look alike eggs bedecked with feathers and imitation gem stones,” Lee said.

“At the end of the day, they had a souvenir to remember their Easter visit to the Gallery.”

A raffle held at the Gallery over the weekend also proved to be a great success with funds raised going to the not-for-profit community art group.

First prize of a Jan Johnson Furness’ oil painting, is now on its way to its new home on the Sunshine Coast, won by Di Josephson who was a visitor to town.

second prize of a huge basket of Easter Eggs and a third prize of more chocolates went to ceramic artist and chief keeper of The Gallery’s garden, Jacqui Bright.

The Galleries in the Gardens will have a more activities throughout the year.

“We have some very exciting things in the pipeline,” Lee said.

THE Karuah Roos Played their first game of the season on a very hot and humid Saturday at home against East Maitland.

The game day Sponsors were the Karuah Motor Yacht Club and the Karuah Working Together.

The Roos kicked off and were running towards the vocal home crowd on the hill.

The metre men in the First half were Jack Fleming, Adam Crampton, Brock Cole, Josh Page, Mitch Turvey, Mitch O’Bryan, Matt
