Quarry beats Koala

IN the case of koalas versus the quarry, the Australian iconic has taken second place.

52 hectares of core koala habitat was green lighted last week to be cleared for the expansion of a quarry in Brandy Hill

by Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley. However, the community says the fight isn’t over yet.

The public outcry to the quarry expansion decision has inspired local action groups to continue campaigning and are currently working on strategies to stop the loss of this koala habitat.

Chantal Paslow, a key local spokesperson for the Save Port Stephens Koalas campaign, told News Of The Area, “The Minister has chosen rocks over koalas.

“We had hoped that this would be a turning point; the community feels the government still made the wrong decision,” said Chantal.

Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens and Shadow Minister for the Environment told News Of The Area, “The community campaign has been long and hard and they are looking to see what options come next.”

Minister Ley has claimed that the decision is a good outcome for the Port Stephens koala population.

“The clear finding from the NSW Government and the Commonwealth Department is that Brandy Hill’s expansion, to be staged over the next 25 years, will not rob the area of critical koala habitat.

“The 74 hectare koala corridor can however play an important role in nurturing local populations and in delivering a net gain for local koalas by providing better quality habitat than is there at

present,” she said.

A report on the Habitat Utilisation

by Koalas in the proposed Brandy Hill quarry expansion site was prepared for the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment by Biolink Ecological Consultants.

The report determined that as few as one or two koalas were present in the proposed construction area and that the construction could be managed without impacting the small pockets on the south western edge of the wider site where koalas have been sighted by residents.

Minister Ley said she considered all environmental impacts, including the impacts of bushfires on koala habitats around the country, before making her decision.

“This is not a region where bushfires have impacted local populations or habitat, the area to be cleared is not a site that is supporting resident breeding populations and, having reviewed the Department’s recommendations, I have approved the proposal.”

In June, a year-long parliamentary

inquiry found that koalas will become extinct in NSW before 2050 unless urgent action is taken to protect their habitat.

“Has that stopped Liberal-National Governments bulldozing core koala habitat? No, it hasn’t. Now they’re fasttracking it. It’s unbelievable,” said Ms Washington.

“Unfortunately this decision was all but guaranteed as soon as the Berejiklian Government recommended, approved and then fast-tracked the project earlier this year.

“It’s not rocket science, if we want to save koalas from extinction, we need to stop bulldozing their habitat.

Ms Washington described the Ministers decision as ‘shameful’.

“This is a shameful decision that our children and grandchildren will live to regret.

Hawks Nest dredging complete

By Ashley CHRYSLER A MAJOR dredging operation to remove 120,000 cubic metres of sand from the eastern channel of the Lower Myall River at Hawks Nest is now complete.

The campaign which has been underway since May, was highly successful, removing more sand than anticipated, both on time and on budget, and has significantly improved boating navigation through the eastern channel of the Lower Myall River.

Andrew Staniland, MidCoast Council’s Coastal Management Coordinator, said, “We’re delighted with how the project has played out.

“Council staff worked closely with our contractors, Dredging Solutions, to

work our way through all issues that arose, resulting in the project exceeding our original expectations and more than 137,000 cubic metres being removed.”

The project has benefited not just local boat users, but has also been able to replenish the Winda Woppa stockpile that serves the Sand Transfer System to help combat erosion of the nearby Jimmys Beach.

The completion of this dredging will also allow more sea water to pass Tea Gardens, and it is expected the blue water exchange will be noticeable on high tides.

Gordon Grainger, from the Myall River Action Group, said, “The operators have remarked that when the final breakthrough was made, the volume of water coming q

from the system was like a torrent, and this was before the recent rain which reportedly dumped 250 millimetres in the catchment area.

“Interestingly, a large vessel brought golfers into town last week and used the new shortcut very successfully.

“The vessel draws 1.6 metre draft and cleared the bottom at low tide with plenty of spare room.

“That represents a time saving of at least 20 minutes each crossing of the bay, plus a fuel saving.”

A grant from the NSW Government’s Rescuing our Waterways Program has covered half of the $1.7 million project cost, to support the delivery of this project.

We often think of our pets as members of the family; but it is their role in relationship conflict that is currently being considered by the NSW Government.

As the NSW Government considers the criminalisation of coercive and controlling behaviours, it is also looking at amendments to the Crimes (Domestic and Personal Violence) Act to include new provisions to: (a) expand the definition of “intimidation” to include circumstances where there is harm, or threat of harm, to pets and companion animals; and (b) include the protection of animals as a standard condition in Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders.

the animal.

Intentionally causing death or injury to an animal has been legislated as an example of family violence in the Commonwealth Family Law Act for almost 10 years.

The proposed amendment to the state legislation takes the protection further; with protections available at the time of a threat being made, rather than once the harm has occurred.

This is but one of the amendments currently being considered by the NSW State Government to address issues of family violence in our community; to attempt to remove the instruments utilised by perpetrators, and make it easier to respond to these socially unacceptable behaviours.

STRIDE4STROKE is the signature fundraising event for the Stroke Foundation and kicks off this November, encouraging communities to get active to help prevent, treat, and beat stroke.

“For Stride4Stroke, I am going to walk 100km. Please sponsor me to raise funds for this important cause,” Sophia said.

Sophia has already raised $709 towards a target of $1000.

She added, “It has been great progress to date, so I am going to increase my fundraising target to $5000.”

One in four people have a stroke in their lifetime, that is one stroke every nine minutes.

It is one of Australia's biggest killers, killing more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer.

Triple C Health Family Practice has opened an outreach clinic at Bulahdelah in an effort to address the need for increased general practice services in the area.

TRIPLE C Health Family Practice has opened an outreach clinic at Bulahdelah in an effort to address the need for increased general practice services in the area.

The clinic will be colocated at the current Bulahdelah Health Campus at 10-12 Richmond Street, the former Bulahdelah Hospital.

Dr Sita Dewamitta (MBBS, FRACGP) said that she and her colleague Dr Bimalka Wijayanayake (MBBS, AMC) will work together to cover the current Triple C Health Practice at Karuah and the new outreach clinic at Bulahdelah.

“Residents of Bulahdelah have been crying out for a long time now for more GP coverage,” said Dr Dewamitta.

“I’m getting patients from Bulahdelah at our practice in Karuah, and I know some even travel to Tea Gardens.

“If they need to see someone quickly, they have to travel or wait possibly weeks for an available appointment.

“I’ve also heard from locals that some patients are proactively booking well ahead just so they have a spot to see a doctor.”

All general practice services including child and adolescent health, men and women’s health, chronic disease management, health assessments, childhood immunizations, work cover and minor surgical procedures will be available at the outreach clinic in liaison with the nurse-led community health staff through Hunter New England Health and visiting allied health staff.

“I’ve already got interest from another doctor who may join as well, so hopefully we can work towards increasing hours and days down the track if the demand is there,” continued Dr Dewamitta.

All general practice services at the outreach clinic will be bulk billed.

Dr Dewamitta will be available at the Bulahdelah Health Campus on Mondays from 9am to 4.30pm.

“During an emergency every second counts. The new radio site in the Nelson Bay area will make it easier for our local emergency services to communicate when it matters most,” Mr Dominello said.

“The PSN’s expansion represents the biggest investment in critical communications infrastructure by the NSW Government in two decades.”

The delivery of the new emergency communications site near Nelson Bay follows a $217 million boost to the Telco Authority in 2020 to continue to expand the footprint of the PSN across NSW.

I DON'T have a lot of daytime shopping experience.

I try to purchase my groceries right before closing time.

It is an absolute pleasure to shop at this time -- well, it would be if they lowered the lighting and changed the music -- no aimless shoppers wandering around like extras in Dawn of the Dead, no screaming toddlers and definitely no queues.

However, I have been placed in the predicament you describe, and it is very uncomfortable. Particularly, when the people behind you are passive aggressive.

It starts with a few loud sighs and then extends to narky little comments muttered under their breath - 'Can't she read?'; 'Can't she count?'

Honestly, one starts to feel as though one is auditioning for a spot in a prestigious day care centre.

You just have to stand your ground, or maybe hide smaller items like soap under your Chinese cabbage to confuse the angry mob.

Added to this issue is the dual function of this aisle. It is also the service desk and the smokes counter.

You have to spare a thought for the attendant who is negotiating customers with nicotine withdrawals, those cashing in Return and Earn receipts, someone wanting a replacement for a below-par avocado and dealing with the growing fracas in the 12-items-or-less queue.

Petra, may I recommend that you just stand your ground and avoid eye contact.

When you finally do get served, you can return serve with your own comments: 'Oh, I realise I have more than 12 items, but your lovely colleague told me to come to this aisle.

What outstanding customer service.

It seems strange to me that you have at least eight registers closed, but who am I to argue?

It must be a bit frustrating to those behind me, but that's what I love about this little community.

People are just so accommodating and understanding.'

As you leave, wish your fellow shoppers a lovely day and carry on as normal, your 20 items evenly balanced between your two calico bags with their 'Just be Kind' logo. .

Tea Gardens Trick or Treating under a blue moon this Halloween

By Sandra MURRAY SCARY monsters and spooky houses appeared all across the Myall Coast last Saturday 31 October, with many locals celebrating Halloween, under a spooky full blue moon.

Local astronomer, Stephen McMahon, updated locals about the moon, stating, “The blue moon on October 31 was the first full moon on Halloween in 76 years. According to information from NASA, the last time a full moon fell on Halloween was in 1944.

“A blue moon is when two full moons fall in the same month.

The tradition of Halloween dates back 200 years to an ancient

Celtic festival when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.”

There were lots of ghosts and monsters creeping between Halloween houses seeking trick or treaters (small and big kids alike), knocking on the doors of horror houses lit up for the evening.

Corina Dennis, has been transforming her Tea Garden’s home into a house of horror since August, telling NOTA, ”I just love Halloween and the excitement for all the children.

I love giving them all their treats and making people happy.”

NSW Health supported a safe scary day with COVID-smart advice issued online.

ST ANDREW’S Anglican Church has opened a wonderful Christmas Shop stocked with great gift ideas for the festive season, including a selection of toys (in Santa’s Shed), jewellery, homewares, clothing, books, and plants.

Drop in for some great gift ideas at a fraction of the cost, including vintage items or DIY projects, with the proceeds supporting the community.

The Christmas Shop is COVID compliant and staffed by friendly and helpful local volunteers.

It is open for a limited time: 4, 6, and 7 November from 8.30am to 12.30pm.

This is in addition to their Op Shop, a local favourite, which is open every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8.30am to 12,30pm.

St Andrew’s and the Christmas and the Op shops are located at 28 Witt Street, Tea Gardens. q Vintage dolls are just some of the preloved toys available at the Christmas Shop.

Car wash a shiny success

Local Police Officers Ash Ray and Trevor McLeod have been making positive community connections with a group of Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) students.

LOCAL Police Officers Ash Ray and Trevor McLeod have been making positive community connections with a group of Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) students.

On this occasion, BSC’s Multi Category (MC) classes were invited to participate in a community car wash.

The excursion for the MC classes was first conceived over a cup of tea in the well-being staff room a few weeks ago between Ash, Trevor and MC teacher Micheala Sawtell.

“The two local boys in blue were taking a short break from labouring here at BCS for the ‘Go-getters’ on

Local road projects LOCAL Councils across the region are being encouraged to apply for additional funding to fix local road and fast track local road priorities.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said Federal and State Nationals had been working together to secure additional funding to fix local roads and he was delighted another round of funding for the Fixing Local Roads program opened on Monday.

“The Federal Coalition Government is investing $191-million to boost this important local infrastructure program. Under the first round of the program, a number of local road priority projects received funding and I’m encouraging our local councils to apply again to fast track key projects,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Regional communities like ours heavily rely on our road networks and by continuing to significantly invest in local roads, we are improving that connectivity.

Dr Gillespie said the additional investment by the Federal Government has helped to deliver more local

road projects and create more local employment.

“Since securing the additional funding, we’ve seen $243.6 million of joint funding go towards 253 shovel-ready projects across the state in the first round of funding and this latest round will see another $136.4 million injected into regional areas, generating more jobs that help stimulate local economies,” Dr Gillespie said.

“It will mean smoother, safer trips to school, work or even the shops and most importantly, it will create much-needed jobs in hundreds of communities.”

Applications for round two of the program are open from Monday November 2 until Friday 4 December 2020.

Projects will need to start this financial year and be delivered within two years, to ensure local communities see the benefits as quickly as possible.

The event started with the students being shown around the Police station, including the technology in the Police car and then, with a little bit of elbow grease, they put a shine on the Police vehicle.

The occasion was particularly special for our Year 12 student Harrison ‘Hughesy’ Hughes, who was nearing the end of his time at BCS at the time.

“Hughesy took the lead in preparing the materials for the car wash, filling buckets, handing out sponges and taking the lead role of rinsing the Police vehicle with the hose.

“The students are to be commended on their respect, attention and hard work while washing the Police car.

“We would like to thank our local police officers for their good nature, effort and commitment.

“These activities with our BCS students help to strengthen relationships with our young community,” said Micheala.

Hawks Nest breaks for the ill FOR over 15 years, the Westmead Medical Research Foundation and generous members of the community of Hawks Nest have helped hundreds of seriously ill patients and their families spend precious time together in their time of greatest need.

The program provides patients and their loved

ones with the opportunity to take time out and spend a week away at beautiful Hawks Nest at no cost.

Some use the week to say final goodbyes and some as a time to recharge before returning to continue their battle.

MidCoast Council will be carrying out a range of herbicide spraying activities in various waterways, open drains, and retention ponds; on roadsides and reserves; and on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries and Council building surrounds within the entire MidCoast Local Government area during the months November, December 2020 and January 2021.
