Commissioner of Resilience NSW, Shane Fitzsimmons said, “This year alone has been one of unparalleled emergencies.

“Communities across NSW were first impacted by drought, bushfire, then storm and flood, now pandemic - and all in quick succession.

MidCoast Council Mayor David West says that MidCoast businesses have experienced all of these disruptions, and preparing for disruption is simply good business.

MidCoast businesses can prepare for emergencies and disasters by downloading the free Get Ready Business toolkit from Resilience NSW. The toolkit helps a business prepare for emergencies, and may make all the difference in recovering quickly – even if

power, telecommunications and transport routes are cut.

Resilience NSW has also prepared a recovery guide for business – a handy guide to help get business up and running after disasters.

“With many local tourism businesses offering hospitality and accommodation services, having an emergency plan is a responsibility to ensure the safety of your guests during an emergency.”

The response from TfNSW comes after Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington took concerns about safety at the intersection from the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association to the state body.

In particular, the Progress Association were advocating for the installation of flashing warning lights at the intersection, which has been the site of road traffic accidents in the past.

“We have had one fatality, and there have been a few other accidents,” said Gordon Grainger, Vice President of the Progress Association.

“The big concern for us as a community, was that on that Friday of the recent long weekend, the traffic build up turning right onto Myall Way was actually stopped past the Rock service station.

“You have cars and big trucks

coming up the 100km zone, who are travelling closer to 120km, and they will run smack into this traffic.

“It harbours ill will for a bad accident to occur there one day.”

A spokesperson for Transport for NSW, said a project is under consideration in the next rounds of Safer Roads funding.

“Transport for NSW is currently developing a project for safety improvements at the intersection of Myall Way and the Pacific Highway at Tea Gardens for consideration in the 2021/22 round of Safer Roads funding, which is expected to be announced in February 2021.

“The potential installation of flashing warning lights would be investigated as part of this project development,” they said.

Mr Grainger said a solution similar to the warning lights installed at Bucketts Way and Medowie Road intersections would improve safety for commuters.

The annual recycling event is a great time to think about our recycling habits, and by taking part in a short on-line survey, provide insight on where we can improve.

The five-minute survey is a simple true / false quiz and participants will be placed in a draw to win one of five $100 #shopmidcoast gift cards.

“While a pleasing portion of our community regularly use their kerbside recycling bins, it’s not always clear what can – and what can’t – be recycled,” Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell explained.

“We’re conducting a survey this year to help us understand what gaps there are in our recycling habits. The results will provide valuable information to help us develop education campaigns according to community needs, and provide a benchmark for measuring our recycling performance over time.”

Contamination in the recycling process is a widespread issue, and just one person in the street placing the wrong item in their yellow-bin can mean a whole truckload of otherwise recyclable material ends up in landfill.

Common mistakes include placing food residue, soft plastics, cords and ropes, and small items (even if made of recyclable

material) in with recyclables.

“One of the easiest mistakes to make is boxing or bagging your recyclables before placing them in the yellow bin.

Draft plan for improved pedestrian and bike access

MIDCOAST Council has responded to requests from the community for improved footpath and cycleway connections, developing a draft plan to guide the future development of pedestrian and cycle routes across the region.

Council is currently seeking feedback from the community on a draft Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan/Bike Plan,

that includes detailed projects for different communities according to ideas shared during extensive consultation across the region late last year.

The issue was also raised at a number of Council’s Community Conversations, with towns and villages united in their desire for greater pedestrian and mobility access, and improved footpath and cycleway connections, leading Council to develop the draft plan.

The Public consultation session at Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens was held at Tea Gardens Baptist Church and was attended by 20 members of the community.

Issues raised at the consultation included the narrow pedestrian pathways on the Singing Bridge, a lack of pathways connecting Peter Sinclair Gardens to shops and local facilities, streets with no formal pathways, conflicts between vehicles

and pedestrians at peak times, the lack of a walking and bike link to Winda Woppa and inconsistent waymarking.

Gordon Grainger of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association said that action on the Singing Bridge had been long awaited by the community.

“We are still awaiting a decision on the Singing Bridge here,” he said.

“The footpath is too narrow. We have an increasing age group here, many of whom are in wheelchairs.

“The problem we have is that when two wheelchairs meet in the middle, one of them has to back back.

“You also have bike riders using the path. We are trying to get a one way system for motorized wheelchairs.

“We have been waiting four years for a decision,” said Mr Grainger.

In the Public consultation session at Bulahdelah, community members discussed the need to link existing pathways particularly in the core area by the shops and locations including the Tourist information Centre, Museum and Recreational Vehicle Park.

By improving accessible footpaths, shared pathways, cycleways, bike facilities and community pedestrian / cycle systems we hope it makes it

easier for everyone to get out and enjoy our beautiful region.

Myall Lakes Matters NAIDOC Week is the 8-15 November this year (postponed from July) with the theme - Always Was, Always Will Be. The week celebrates the histories, cultures, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Nations people who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

Along the Myall Coast, we recognise the traditional custodians of the land, especially the Gathangspeaking (Biripi and Worimi) peoples.

Interestingly, according to the 1954 Newcastle Herald, the word Myall is Dharug for a stranger.

How this came to be the name of this beautiful area is somewhat of a mystery with

competing tales - so let NOTA know if you do.

The Manning Regional Art Gallery is hosting a week of NAIDOC activities including learning about weaving and clapsticks, and listening to wonderful stories: go to events at htps://www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au.

Remembrance Day also falls this week, so take some time to reflect and remember those who served in World War One, as well as those who continue to serve our community.

My husband has suggested we get a shared present this Christmas and he has decided that the shared present should be a barbecue.

I was hoping for something a bit more personal.

Do I just go along with it?

BUYING A HERITAGE HOME “We’d love to buy a historic property, but many we’ve looked at have Heritage Overlays or National Trust protection. Should we embrace or fear a property with those mantles?”

HISTORICALLY significant homes are important to our local communities. Plus, their design and construction are representative of the quality of craftsmanship of a bygone era.

When these factors combine, they invariably arouse community/Council/National Trust resolve to protect them,hence the application of tight parameters about what changes can be made. The level of restrictions will be dependent on the whether the property is noted with local council as an item of historical note or if it is fully listed with National Trust. Then I think your first point is to determine just how much you love the property, not just visually, but will it meet your daily needs? If so, then, if significant repairs/ alterations are required, do you have the deep pockets and resolve to see them through within the tight and often costly guidelines? We’ve all watched ‘Restoration Home’ and sympathise with property owners when things get tough. If you love the home, and you have the passion to work within the guidelines, I say don’t be afraid, be excited about the purchase and engage the best people to work with you. Yes, there might be plenty of tears, but there’ll also be plenty of joy. When you own a significant home, you are the custodian of a slice of our country’s development. That’s definitely something to be immensely proud of!

Help local homeless and support Red Cross

By Sandra MURRAY LAST months “New Wave of Disadvantage Report” by Homeless NSW shows concerning increases in economic and social disadvantage across NSW. The report models the impact of rising unemployment by June 2021 when JobKeeper has stopped and if JobSeeker returns to its previous rate.

Key findings include an expected increase in homelessness of up to 9,000 people, with the main impacts occurring in Newcastle, the Hunter, as well as the Mid-Far North Coast and Sydney.

Janet Baker, from the Tea Gardens Red Cross, stated, “As this horrible time goes on the number of homeless people is increasing in Newcastle and surrounding areas.

“There are so many people living week to week trying to pay rent.

“Many are resorting to sleeping in their cars or outside.”

The Red Cross believes that everyone

deserves a home that is safe, secure and affordable.

In an average year, the Red Cross helps 2180 people to find housing, supports 1360 people at risk of becoming homeless, and provides 43,400 meals to people experiencing hardship.

Janet added that locals can help, “We are asking the community to donate clean single bed size blankets, knitted squares or even balls of wool.

“The Tea Gardens Red Cross will ensure that the donations are provided to people who need them so they wrap themselves up at night.

“Our community has given in the past and all the donations were well used and much appreciated.”

AT PALM Lake Tea Gardens we have a man who spends a lot of time rescuing bottles and cans from the recycle bins to cash in for charity.

Don’s wife, Judy passed away very suddenly two years ago and he only has their little dog, Tilly to keep him company most of the time, although his family is very supportive and often come by to check on him.

Don and Judy always worked together during their married life, firstly in a bank then a business on the South Coast, a carrying business (where Judy used to drive big trucks), and a Delicatessen where Judy was once shot in the leg during a robbery.

Don’s reason for commencing the bottle collection was because 20 years ago his and Judy’s Grandson, Jack, who was aged five, passed away from Leukemia.

They had spent a lot of time with him during his two and a half year treatment at Westmead Children’s Hospital where he had Chemotherapy, Radiology and Bone Marrow Transplants.

During this time they had a lot of contact with people from the Cancer Council, Starlight Foundation, Doctor Clown and also The Music Masters (where two ladies came in with instruments and encouraged the sick children to sing along to the music).

OPINION

When he commenced his collecting, Don used to take the bottles and cans over to Hawks Nest Newsagency but as the numbers grew (with the lockdown) they were unable to cope.

He now goes to the recycling machine at Medowie about once a week (thanks to the PLR Bar Committee) either at 6.00 am or 7.00 pm to avoid the crowds.

Sometimes (in fact most times) his little car is so full that he cannot take his little mate, Tilly with him.

She is not very happy about that and lets him know it!

Don has donated in excess of $4000.00 (that’s 40,000 bottles and cans).

He originally donated all the proceeds to the Cancer Council but recently has donated to the Biggest Morning Tea, the Rural Fire Service , the Salvation Army and Peter Stenson’s ride for the Starlight Foundation.

His little car recently had a nervous breakdown and he is currently using a loan car with a larger carrying capacity.

He may not have to go to Medowie so often for the next couple of weeks but at least Tilly will be able to go with him. We wonder what else he will get up to in his spare time.

NORMALLY I complain about any conversations to do with Christmas prior to December, but after what has felt like a year of apocalyptic proportions, I reckon we should just get it over and done with.

So, let's have this conversation.

People celebrate Christmas in many different ways.

There are those who have been putting presents on Lay-by for months.

Their festive tree is already decorated.

The house is adorned with lights.

They have had their Christmas photo shoots and they are about to embark on a marathon of cooking, starting with the Christmas pudding and ending with rum balls with Oh Come All Ye Faithful blasting from their sound system.

Others are a little more subtle.

A week before Christmas, they wander aimlessly around the shops wondering exactly what a surly sixteen-year-old boy could possibly want or need.

They drag the Christmas tree from the garage and discover it's infested with rat droppings.

They make plaintive suggestions to the more celebratory members of the family to forget the whole thing, and then they too make rum balls . . . well, they pour themselves a rum.

Close enough.

Now to the whole present thing.

We do a secret Santa that is never a secret because certain members of the family are impossible to buy for, so we demand a redraw -- a bit like Donald Trump.

If your husband is keen for a shared present, then at the very least, you should both have input into what that present is.

Perhaps the barbecue would be more suited to a Father's Day gift? Or a birthday present?

So no, I wouldn't just go along with it, unless it means he is going to be doing more than his fair share of cooking, in which case it sounds like a great deal.

Best Dressed Bowls on Cup Day

By Lynda RICHARDS MONDAY 3 November: Due to Covid 19 Tea Gardens Country Club and Motel was unable to hold their usual Melbourne Cup Day Celebrations.

Hence TGCCWBC invited the members of the TGCCMBC to join us in a fun game of bowls, dress up, raffles and lunch.

It was good to see our

bowlers out there bowling in all their finery, but all wore correct bowls footwear.

During the bowls, prizes were awarded for such things as closest to the Jack, the first "toucher" even for the furthest bowl from the Jack (of course this category wasn't announced until the end was completed).

Congratulations to Lyn Nightingale best "Crazy

Costume", Ray Gilchrist "Best Dressed Man", Jean Glover "Best Hat" and Pam Gilchrist "Best Dressed Lady".

Thursday 5 November: The first round of the Open Consistency Competition plus social bowls a game of Pairs 12 ends.

The winner in a Consistency game is the first bowler to reach 150 points.

The bowl closest to the Jack scores 4 points then the next closest 3, then 2 and then 1 point. The weather was not conducive to bowls showers

The weather was the winner on the other 3 games, play was abandoned 2 were completed on Friday 6 November, Irene Roberts and Sheril Johnson battled for 30 ends, 2nd last end Irene 144 and Sheril 145.

Sheril gained a 7 on the last end claiming victory 152 v 147.

Bev Rhodes and Bette Saillard also had a tough game 31 ends bowled, just a 2 shot difference on the last end Bev scored a 6 winning 150 v 148.

Kathie Rimmer and Dot Dallas will finish

their game on Tuesday 10th November their score at close of play 24 ends completed Dot 124 v Kathie 116.

Memorial Day for Younghusband

By John SLATER 4 NOVEMBER Another busy week at the Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club kicking off with the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples.

Great weather ensured a good turnout of 56 players today and the competition, as usual, was fierce.

The winners were decided on a 3-end countback, all needing 23 points.

The combination of Noels Jackson, Greg Smith and Jeff Baker took the money.

The luck losers, on 16 points, were Gary Wynne, John Moore and Stu Sturrock 7 November In a first ever event for our Club a special Memorial

Thanks also to George Winter and Dave Perry for their expertise on the BBQ. 8 November The quarter-final round of the Club Mixed Pairs was played today with Lynda Richards and Keith Smith bowing out to Irene Roberts and Dennis Longman, (substituting for Neil Kibble), they were defeated 9-18.

Robyn Beaumont and Jeff Baker might be warm favorites for this competition, but they were certainly given a scare by John Moore and Dale Winter.

The scores were locked at 15-15 at full time and Robyn and Jeff managed to win the extra end.

Karen and Ron Green romped home in their match against Doug Andrews and Bette Saillard 23-4.

In another close match, Maynie Roberts and Peter Gurney had a great win over

The semi-finals next Saturday will see Karen and Ron Green play Maynie Roberts and Peter Gurney, whilst Irene Roberts and Neil Kibble take on Robyn Beaumont and Jeff Baker.

The annual “Versatility Day” will be held on Wednesday 18 November and this year single nominations will be made into teams of 4 with a random draw.

“Dolphin Day” has been schedules for Friday 20 November and will take the form of a “shirts v skirts” competition.

A CLASSY century from Karuah-Tea Gardens batsman Colin McCarthy proved to be the difference as his side notched up their first win of the Dungog and District Cricket season against Clarence Town.

Karuah won the toss and elected to bat on their home ground.

Up stepped McCarthy amassing 124 in the Sharks first innings total of 5 for 242 off the allocated 35 overs, with Lucas Barry chipping in for a well-compiled 61.

In reply Clarence Town started strongly and appeared to be in control of the match sitting at 1 for 104 at the drinks break.

However, momentum swung back the way of the men from Karuah largely thanks to a damaging spell from Jack Bills, taking 3 for 35.

An economic six overs from James McCarthy (3 for 19) all but sealed the win for the Sharks with Clarence Town eventually bundled out for 173.

The win gets the season rolling

Elsewhere, Wallarobba made it two wins on the trot against Stroud.

Stroud were bowled out in just 29 overs, making 116.

Stroud were able to keep the match alive deep into the innings despite the low total largely due to some tight bowling and pressure fielding.

Wallarobba completed the five wicket win with four overs to spare at Bennett Park.

In Round 3 action this Saturday Stroud take on Clarence Town, both teams will be looking to secure their first win for the season.

While Karuah go head to head with the Bunnies at Karuah Oval.

The Sharks batting lineup will need to be on their toes again after a convincing bowling performance from the Bunnies in Round 1 won them the points.

Wallarobba will enjoy the bye.
