By Margie TIERNEY 99 YEARS on and Australia once again stood in silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in commemoration of Remembrance Day, the day the guns fell silent at the end of World War One..

In Tea Gardens a large crowd gathered under cloudy skies to mark the occasion at Anzac Park.

Local RSL President Michael Farrar led the proceedings with RSL Vice President Scott Beaumont giving a moving tribute in honour of the more than 100,000 Australian servicemen and women who’ve given their lives in defence of peace.

For the RSL’s Barry Whiteman and former NSW Governor Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair, it was a time for reflection and a walk down memory lane.

Both men remembered

For Peter Sinclair, Remembrance Day is also a time to honour the military servicemen and women who’ve died while on duty through peacetime.

He recalled the nine Australian personnel who were killed when their Royal Australian Navy Sea King helicopter crashed during a rescue mission in Indonesia after a devastating earthquake in 2005.

Residents, staff and guests joined in an hour long ceremony which included a moving address from James Graves, a serving member of the RAAF Base at Williamtown.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE: Peter Sinclair Gardens.

A FEW showers couldn’t dampen the spirits at the recent annual Pindimar Market Day. “This Market Day was another great success, but we must give a huge thankyou to all those dedicated volunteers who made it possible,” Betty Economos said.

“Many years ago we realised that if our residents wanted improvements in our three villages we would have to do a lot of work

ourselves.”

Betty added, “So many years later we still have a magnificent band of volunteers who mow the verges, foreshores and keep the area looking good.”

The Pindimar Market Day is very much a community effort from the weeks of organisation leading up to the event, to the set up and clean up after the big day.

All the favourite activities were there from the Home Brew

Competition to the Chocolate Wheel, White Elephant Stalls, Cake Baking and Thong Throwing Competition.

John Price and his amazing skills with a chainsaw also proved a big hit.

At the end of the day Neil Goldthorpe from Raymond Terrace won the Home Brew Competition, the late Greg Croese came in second and third went to Alan Bentley of Pindimar.

The Mystery Brew

was Number Three.

Bea Treharne, Elva Snape and Sandy Snape took out the Cake Baking Competition.

Betty Economos said, “Thank you all volunteers, including newcomers to the area who were there for the three days and then generously donated their takings.”

“We also thank all the locals and visitors that attended supported our community and made the day a great success.”

For too many years to remember the Country Club’s Fishing Club has been angling and enjoying the catch and the camaraderie.

Heather Vaughan told News Of The Area, “Our major source of income is from seafood raffles held every three weeks at Tea Gardens Country Club.”

So the Country Club was the natural venue for their Presentation Night.

“The activities began with a delicious meal, followed by presentation of prizes to our overall winners and other categories of secret weight, secret fish and monthly outing winners.”

The Attorney-General has commissioned the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) to conduct a review of the Australian family law system; the first comprehensive since the commencement of the Family Law Act in 1975.

Some of the matters that the Government has asked be reviewed include whether reforms are needed for: • Families with complex needs, including where there is family violence, drug or alcohol addiction or serious mental illness;

• Collaboration, coordination and integration between the family law system and other Commonwealth, state and territory systems, including family support services and family

Farewell Ms Caro POPULAR English/History teacher Ms Ros Caro was farewelled from Bulahdelah Central School last week.

“I am definitely going to miss the people here,” Ms Caro said.

“The staff at the school have been like a second family and the students have been wonderful.”

In addition to her teaching duties, Ms Caro was a Year Advisor, debating coach, homework tutor and mentor to countless senior students over the years.

She was well-known for her passion, dedication and patience.

Year 7 student Sophia Stubbs said history lessons

with Ms Caro were always lots of fun.

“She knew everyone as individuals, she knew exactly what you were good at and what you needed help with,” Sophia said.

“She was creative and always explained things in a way that made it easy to understand.”

Sophia said she enjoyed tasting food from ancient cultures which Ms Caro regularly prepared for the class.

Ms Caro has commuted back and forth between Bulahdelah and her home in Sydney every weekend for years.

She said leaving the

teaching job that she loves was a tough decision, but she needs to be with her husband and children full time.

“It has been difficult and challenging at times because the of distance between us,” she said.

“I have no firm plans at the moment, I am just going to take it day by day and definitely spend lots of time with my family.”

Ms Caro thanks the school and the entire community for their support during her time at Bulahdelah.

“Everyone has been great, I will be back, I’ll come and visit,” she said.

Building Better Regions

COUNCILS and other organisations are being encouraged to apply for Round Two of the Federal Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF), with applications now open for funding to support further job creation and economic growth in regional and rural Australia.

We are particularly keen to support local businesses and job creation, while also ensuring the needs of the community are met.

The fact BBRF has two streams - Infrastructure

Projects and Community Investments – means communities have even more flexibility in developing proposals. With submissions closing on 19 December 2017 for both streams, I encourage all eligible organisations to get their application in.

The program is designed to back projects that create further investment in the community.

Applicants should demonstrate how their project will drive economic development, make their region a more attractive place to live and foster partnerships across their community.

Infrastructure investment,

and planning and capability building are significant to improving outcomes in a community. A clearly articulated regional aged care strategy, for instance, can have as big an impact on residents as building a new aged care facility in a single town.

When combined, both streams will encourage job creation, economic growth, and encourage social cohesion across Australia.

HEALTHY waterways and catchments are vital systems that keep our local towns and communities thriving and ensure a healthy and vibrant future.

Because of this, waterway and catchment health has been an ongoing commitment for MidCoast Council and MidCoast Water are excited to announce the launch of the first combined report card for the new MidCoast Council area.

They’ve developed strong partnerships with community members, farmers, industry and business groups, and NSW Government stakeholders to deliver projects that keep our waterways and catchments healthy.

This collective effort is vital to achieving long term protection and improvement of catchment health, water quality and estuary productivity.

Throughout the year, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage carries out independent scientific testing and analysis within our

catchments and waterways to provide a score that is presented as a report card.

The annual score can be compared to previous years and also to other estuaries within NSW. The report card is used to guide future management actions to ensure long-term ecological health of our catchments.

MidCoast Council’s Coordinator - Water Quality and Estuary Management Program, Prue Tucker said, “Some of the work undertaken by individual community members - on their farms, on the rivers and lakes, and in our towns - is truly inspirational and we will be introducing you to their stories over the coming month, in the lead up to the release of the Report Card.”

“The partnerships we have with our ‘local legends’ who look after our waterways are very important - it’s often their actions and efforts that contribute directly to the ‘score’ a waterway receives on the Report Card.”

The community are invited to attend the launch

event where this year’s results will be announced.

Dr Peter Scanes from the NSW Department of Environment and Heritage will be there to release the results and explain the science of waterway and catchment health.

You will also have the opportunity to meet local people, who are actively managing their farms to increase productivity whilst looking after the waterways.

This year’s annual launch of the Waterway and Catchment Report Card will be held at 9am on Tuesday 5 December at Council’s Taree Administration Office.

Following the launch, a boat cruise along the Manning River will enable you to see first-hand the work that’s being undertaken to restore the riverbanks and protect water quality in the Manning estuary.

Last week, the ‘Pearls’, the women behind the ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ initiative,

delivered the fruits of their labours to three worthy causes.

Harry’s House in Stockton gratefully received a cheque for over $2,000 from the Pearls.

The Harry’s House organisation provides a home away from home for families who have a child living with cancer and families grieving the loss of their child to cancer within the past 2 years.

THE simple fact is you can’t ensure that it will go smoothly.

How can you relax?

How about we throw in a dog that urinates on the Christmas tree (and all the presents underneath), a dishwasher that groans under the pressure and dies, great grandad Maurice (who also groans under the pressure and dies), a maxed-out credit card and more landfill than anyone knows what to do with.

I know a family who has this whole Christmas caper worked out.

They put out an open invitation telling everyone they will be at the beach. If anyone want to come along, they simply need to turn up with their own chairs, their own grog, and a plate to share. Presents are banned. They sit around under a shady tree with zero stress, zero cost apart from the usual costs associated with a picnic, and, once lunch is over and the chicken bones are in the bin, they just loll around on inflatable toys.

THE Christmas Party at Korsman’s Landing on 11th/12th November was another resounding success with 52 members in attendance. Everyone was kept busy all day starting with the erection of the marquee and then putting up the Christmas decorations.

By The JAFFA 8 NOVEMBER: Early morning drizzle today delayed the start of the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples.

Some players pulled out due to afternoon commitments however 26 keen players faced the starter at 1.00pm for an afternoon on the green.

It was well worth the delay for as conditions proved perfect for good bowling.

The winners came from a Pairs game with Geoff Page and Ron James romping home with a margin of +11.

They were closely followed by Merv Mills and Peter Gurney on +10.

10 November: Twenty– two players participated in the $5.00 Friday Open Pairs today which is an encouraging result for the organisers.

More participation is needed to keep this going.

11 November:The home Club hosted a visit from the Belmont Travelling Bowlers today with 26 local players taking on 27 from Belmont.

The weather was perfect and it was good to see both greens in use.

The fun day concluded with prizes allocated by a draw from the cards.

12 November:The Sunday Mixed Bowlers were given some competition today with the Belmont Travelling Bowlers staying over to compete with them.

There was another great field with 54 players participating.

The winners today were the Belmont team of: F.

McPherson, C. Russell and N Fairleigh.

There were numerous “Lucky Losers”, too many to list.

Organisers thanked the cooks Ron, Barry and Ken and all those who helped with the raffles and food.

The day was a great success.

In other news: Nomination sheets have been posted for the annual Dolphin Day which will be on Saturday 25th.

This is the day when we remember our past bowlers.

The formal part of proceedings will be followed by a “Shirts” verses “Skirts” competition and a BBQ lunch.

I have it on good authority that the ladies are formulating a game plan to win the trophy, so men; be prepared for some devious play from the opposition.

In summing up, it was a very interesting week from the Tea Gardens Bowling Club with another one on the way.

You won’t get a better variety of bowls alternatives than you get from Tea Gardens Bowls.

FOR nearly 30 years, the Myall Park Croquet Club has been hitting it out of the park, figuratively speaking.

The club was formed in 1988 and as Susan Dodds

told News Of The Area it continues to grow and prosper.

“We have made great progress as a club since our initial start and with a lot of community support”.

Recently the Myall Club

hosted a fun day of croquet along with a barbecue lunch for 22 visitors from Gateway Lifestyle, Chain Valley Bay. “A most enjoyable day was had by all,” Sue said.

She added, “Our club hosts many fun days

throughout the year, inviting other social groups in town to join us for a game and barbecue.

“Bateau Bay Croquet Club joined us on 3 November for a few games and lunch.

“The Probus groups and

Rotary also come along for a social day.

Sue said, “Croquet is a low impact social sport which is open to all age groups.”

Members of the Myall Park Croquet Club play on Monday, Wednesday and

Saturday mornings, 8.45am for a 9am start.

Their grounds are located in Yamba Street, Hawk’s Nest and everyone is invited to try it for free for the first few games to see if it’s the right fit.
