The Pet and Teddy Bear Competition will be held on Saturday 18 November with sections catering for all shapes and sizes including the most adorable, best fancy dressed and most unique.

Camran said although Tootsie may not be cute and cuddly, his scaly, slithering snake makes an ideal pet.

“They are fairly quiet and you can let them slither around on you, if you wear a jumper it just goes up the sleeve and comes out the top,” he said.

“It has escaped out of the tank a few times, but we have found it hiding in the air conditioning system,

Funding for MidCoast roads and energy were two of the many topics discussed with Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead in Bulahdelah last week.

FUNDING for MidCoast roads and energy were two of the many topics discussed with Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead in Bulahdelah last week.

Mr Bromhead said he encourages all residents to join the fight to improve the region’s roads by signing the online petition on his

website.

“I am calling on the Government to commit $50 million to partner with MidCoast Council in delivering a $100 million roads package over the next four years,” he said.

If the funding request is successful, Mr Bromhead hopes

Markwell Road will be sealed, linking Bulahdelah and Gloucester.

“This would open up that road as a tourist trail,” he said.

“If I am able to convince the Government to put in that $50 million, I want to make sure that Markwell Road is part of

Energy-wise, the National Party MP said they “have opened up three solar farms and are looking at increasing the capacity of the Snowy Hydro Scheme by 50 percent”.

“There are also negotiations to try and keep one of the closed power stations open for a few more years,” he said.

With the increasing energy costs, Mr Bromhead said there are several rebates available to low income families and pensioners.

“They can buy a new energy efficient appliance at up to 50 percent off and get $250 rebate from the Government,” he said.

“We are also trying to educate everyone that they should be negotiating with electricity companies for a better deal.”

Mr Bromhead’s visit was part of his recent electorate tour.

Pool Heats Ups FROM Page 1 at the Tea Gardens Public Swimming pool.

MidCoast Council installed the new solar heating last week at a cost of over $30,000.

Members of the Myall Masters Swimming group and other constant users of the pool had protested long and hard since the

old solar heating was decommissioned last summer.

Myall Masters Swimming President Chris Lock told News Of The Area, “We’re thrilled.”

The solar heating was installed last Tuesday and by Wednesday it had already made a huge difference to the water temperature.

“It was 21 degrees in the water,” Chris said.

“It’s been set to 27 degrees and it’s quite an elaborate arrangement, in can be in tropical mode which means the air temperature can be cooler than the water.”

With the lines repainted and the pool cleaned, it’s now all systems go for the Masters Swimmers ahead of their annual carnival early next year.

Of course the Masters are already competing, seven swimmers recently travelled to Toronto for the Lake Macquarie Crocs BPS meet.

“All swimmers, Leon Bobako, Allan Wilson, Linda Stubbs, Michael Rose, Cheryl Rose, Chris Lock and Chris Mobbs did well in their respective age groups with stand out performances from Cheryl and Leon with both gaining maximum points

with first placing in each event entered,” Valerie Mobbs said.

“Cheryl, Linda, Leon and Chris Mobbs placed second in the mixed 200m freestyle relay, just pipped at the post by Ryde Masters.”

At the end of the meet, Myall Masters was placed sixth out of the 14 clubs and are still well and truly maintaining first place in second division.

Mr Bromhead told News Of The Area the annual awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of individuals, community groups and volunteers across the Myall Lakes region.

“The quality of the nominees was absolutely phenomenal, there were people with 60 years worth of volunteering for numerous organisations and some very talented young people,” he said.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to recognise people who do great things in our community.”

The Sports Person of the Year went to Rex Johnston OAM who represented Australia in lawn bowls at four consecutive Commonwealth Games.

Beryl Ede was named the Senior Person of the Year in recognition of her work with students at Coolongolook Public School.

“Our communities wouldn’t be as rich and vibrant as what they are if it wasn’t for volunteers,” Mr Bromhead said.

Premier Berejiklian attended the award ceremony during her twoday visit to the Myall Lakes electorate.

Most of us understand, at least generally, that for material to be considered by a trial judge in the course of a hearing it must comply with the ‘rules of evidence’. Both under the common law and under both the NSW and Commonwealth Evidence Acts, one class of material that can generally be given in evidence is ‘business records’. The broad theory behind this is that businesses will generally maintain accurate records of how they have been conducted (for example as to who their customers are, what revenues they generate, how they carry out production etc) and that their historical records are therefore generally reliable material for the purpose of a court making decisions.

However when the ‘record’ is in the nature of advertising or promotional material, while it is certainly a document created by a business, the courts tend to be much more cautious

as to whether these are ‘business records’ in the relevant sense. The distinction seems to be whether documents are records of a business; or the product of it. Consequently in recent times the courts have rejected attempts to tender, as business records, both corporate magazines (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission v Air New Zealand Limited (No. 5) [2012] FCA 1479 and extracts from a company’s web page (Clipsal Australia Pty Limited v Clipso Electrical Pty Limited (No. 43) [2017] FCA 60).

Those cases were about quite different types of disputes, but the significance of the rulings is that litigants seeking to prove their case, or part of it, on the basis of business records need to carefully consider whether the material they wish to rely on is a ‘record’ of’ the business (in which case it probably can be used in evidence) or a ‘product’ of the business (in which case it probably cannot).

Literature Awards Finalists

Literature Awards.

Some nine judges read the entries and then have a round table discussion (sometimes rather heated) about the ones which impressed them.

A short list of 20 is then chosen.

This year they selected 21 as it was just too hard to reject one of them.

These short stories are now in the hands of the three finalists’ judges who independently rate them from one to 21. The points are then added up to decide the winners which will be announced at our quilt show at Club Lemon Tree later in November.

All major prize winners will notified beforehand and invited along to personally receive their awards. The others will have them forwarded by mail.

Tea Gardens Library has invited Dr Shane Pascoe to talk about his research into sleep deprivation and the do’s and don’ts to help you rest well.

Dr Pascoe and Professor Graham Law have combined to write a book called “Sleep Better, the Science and the Myths”.

It explores 40 myths about our nightly journey to the land of nod and examines the lengths and trials that

many people endure while searching for a cure.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the local community to come and listen to Dr Pascoe as he shares the wisdom of his research and provides insights into sleep deprivation science and myths,” Danielle Donnelly, MidCoast Libraries Events Officer said.

had been to one of his talks in Forster and was so impressed she recommended that we invite Dr Pascoe to Tea Gardens, so we did.”

Graduation Celebration

SOFIE Dorney donned the cap the gown and officially graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of New England last weekend.

Sofie’s family travelled to Armidale for the celebration, bringing an end to four years

of dedicated study.

“I have always wanted to be a teacher to help young children achieve their dreams,” Sofie said.

“All children learn differently, so it is about finding ways to teach to their individual needs and strengths.”

q Sofie Dorney graduated from the University of New England.

Sofie said practice teaching was a large part of her coursework which allowed her to gain classroom experience at schools in Newcastle, Taree, Bulahdelah and Karuah.

“I am grateful to the staff that I worked with at all the schools,” she said.

“The experience and insight they have given me over the last four years has made me the teacher I am today.”

Since completing her degree, Sofie has enjoyed working as a casual teacher in schools throughout the Myall Coast region.

“I am loving it, the kids are great,” Sofie told News Of The Area.

“I am getting a lot of experience across many different subject areas.”

With an obvious passion for inspiring young minds, Sofie said she is looking forward to a long and successful classroom career.

“I am going to keep learning and keep on enjoying the experience,” she said. q

Why the Rate Rise

Dear News Of The Area,

I READ with interest the article by reporter Daniel Sahyoun in the Myall Coast News Of The Area dated Thursday 2 November 2017 and the comments made by the GM of Mid Coast Council, Mr Handford saying, ‘You can’t go to the Government with your begging bowl all the time’ when referring to his actions in circumventing due democratic process to justify the special rate rise.

It appears that Mr Handford believes his actions in this matter are [justified]? He also stated that Stephen Bromhead has made a public commitment to obtaining $50 million grant from the state government to match the $50 million

loan that Council has applied for.

So far all that has happened is two public servants have ignored the legislation in place and convinced a South Coast MLC, Paul Green, into pushing through their personal desire for more funding.

Why use Paul Green, easy answer he has no care and no responsibility for this area. Why not Stephen Bromhead, if he is so committed to improving infrastructure, why didn’t he push for the rate increase. Again a simple answer, he had his seat to lose, if the public retaliated, and what of our own MP, Kate Washington, we hear nothing from her on this issue?

Stroud School of Arts Hall Upgrade THANKS to the Lions Clubs of Stroud and Dungog, the Stroud School of Arts Hall will soon boast some major internal improvements, upgrading the venue’s capability for community events.

“The Lions Clubs have advised us they have sourced a grant of $28,000 from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), and we’re able to contribute a further $12,000 to enable $40,000 in total for works at the Hall,” said Council’s Manager Property and Commercial Services, John Dougherty.

The funds will provide for

installation of air conditioning and ceiling fans throughout the hall along with the upgrading of the Hall kitchen to a caterer’s style.

The kitchen will be fitted with new sinks and cupboards and have new appliances installed including a large fridge / freezer and dishwasher.

“We’re pleased to be able to partner with the Lions Clubs to enable this significant upgrade to the public hall facilities for the Stroud community,” added John Dougherty.

Works are scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

What is the arrangement for bill-splitting? Whenever we go out as a group, there’s always someone who orders up big and then we pay for it. What is the delicate way to arrange this?

Miss JV, Tea Gardens THIS is a fraught situation, Miss JV. People fall into all sorts of categories when it comes to dining out.

We all know the hand-sitters. When the time comes to pay, these types literally sit on their hand, perhaps concerned that their appendage will take on a mind of its own and try to offer some money towards the meal.

One step up from the hand-sitters, are the wallet openers. They open and close their wallets as though this equates to getting out some cold, hard cash, but they pause long enough for someone else to say, “Hey, I’ve got this.”

Then we have the faulty-carders. They flash around their credit card, and then realise it has expired. “I’ll get it next time,” they offer, as you go to the teller to withdraw more money and wonder why you didn’t stay home and watch Netflix.

How about the couples who order delicacies for their child? Yep, because we all know how much kids love deepfried coconut prawns. The little treasure will just push around their rice, add a bit of slobber, make the meal inedible, and then you’ll end up paying for it.

But wait, there’s more. We can’t forget the couples who forget to bring any wine, but are incredibly grateful that you are happy to share the $80 bottle of plonk you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

And hey, since you’ve only managed one glass (they are fast drinkers) you may as well be the designated driver.

It’s a win-win!

Finally, who can forget the hair-finder. Yep, this person will happily devour their entire meal, but on the last piece of lettuce, they’ll find a hair, probably their own, and then make a scene in front of the poor wait staff who earn $8 an hour for the privilege of serving people tighter than a fish’s . . . let’s just go with a fish’s mouth.

So there you have it.

To avoid these scenarios, I would suggest avoiding people at all costs, but if you must dine out, go to one of those places where you place your order at the counter.

Arrive early and never, under any circumstances, be the last one standing.

Sometimes you have to beat people at their own miserable game.

Pens down for the final time

THE HSC is now over for more than 70,000 NSW students after the final examinations wrapped up

earlier this week.

A total of 117 exams were scheduled over the four-week period, including papers for the 52 HSC Language courses.

q Chelsea Reid, Kiara Fardell, Ms Georgina Cunich, Madisson Morante, Alisha Griffis and Emma Miller were all smiles after the HSC Chinese written exam.

Five of the 66 NSW students who sat the Chinese Beginners exam were from Bulahdelah Central School.

Madisson Morante said studying the two-year language course has given her an insight into different ways that people can view the world.

“I wanted to gain a greater understanding of the Chinese culture and learn the fundamentals of the language,” she said.

“A second language can also open up many job opportunities and it is a good skill to have when travelling.”

The Chinese Beginners written examination consisted of a listening component followed by reading and writing sections.

Speaking skills were tested via a phone conference last term which required the students to

“I felt quite nervous going into the speaking exam,” Madisson said.

“We practiced with a native speaker over the phone about four times a week leading up to the exam and that helped ease

the nerves a little.”

Only seven percent of all students across the state studied a Language as part of their HSC this year.

Japanese was the top language studied with 1,446 students sitting the examination, followed by French with 1,249.

Drama was the final HSC written examination for 2017 marking the end of 13 years of schooling for the students.

They now have a long wait before they find out their results which will be released on 14 December.

“Recently 16 Club Members had a most enjoyable drive to the Teahouse Café in Nabiac, a favourite of many locals, the service was great, the food was excellent and the prices very reasonable.”

Bulahdelah Cricket Club’s junior team thank sponsors

THE cricket season has kicked off and the Bulahdelah junior team is the newest addition to the Manning River District Competition.

Team Manager Erin Matheson said fielding a junior team is a first in Bulahdelah Cricket Club history.

“The club reformed two years ago after 14 years without a team,” Erin said.

“This year we have the first ever junior team set up, they have all come up through the Milo Cricket that we started a few years ago.”

The new U12 team will play 15 matches throughout the season including nine home games.

“They put up a good fight

in their first match against Wingham only narrowly being defeated by 15 runs,” Erin said.

“It was a great effort for their first ever hit out.”

The best bowler for the day was Blake Matheson taking 5 for 6 and the top batsman was Toby Barry with 9 runs.

Erin said the support of sponsors and the community made it possible for the team to be up and running for the start of the season.

“Bulahdelah Cricket Club would like to say a huge thank you to Access Fuels, R & R property, IGA, Great Lakes Tree Professionals, Erik Wilkes Sawmill, Kevin Smith Electrical, Barry Bros Butchery and the Bulahdelah Garden Club for your

generous donations and sponsorships,” she said.

The young players were decked out in new team shirts for their weekend match and are certainly enjoying playing for the local team.

“The best thing about having a local club is that you get to play with your mates and represent your town,” team member Kurtis Barry said.

“I really enjoy playing cricket and there are some great coaches who train us.”

Kurtis said he prefers bowling and is learning new skills each week from coach Geoff Matheson.

“I also practice a lot at home, but I haven’t broken any windows yet,” Kurtis told News Of The Area.

The cricket season runs until March 2018.

THE annual King of the Mountain competition was held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club last weekend with more than 80 competitors from around the state taking part.

Bowls action kicked off on the Friday night with a shoot off won by Ash Mitchell of Penrith.

Fierce competition amongst the 28 teams over the next two days resulted in some top-class bowls being played.

In near perfect conditions, three games of 15 ends were

played on Saturday followed by two games on Sunday.

At the end of the threeday match, Tea Gardens topped the scoreboard to win the King of the Mountain title.

“I must thank my team who all played really well throughout the competition,” Tea Gardens captain Steve Pell said.

Second and third places were claimed by teams from Wallacia and Karuah performed strongly to finish in fourth position.

With many of the players staying in the area for the weekend, Bulahdelah Bowling Club President Al Robards said the competition also provided an opportunity for the clubs to socialise

together.

“It’s about having a great round of bowls with true sportsmen and enjoying everything we have to offer here in Bulahdelah,” he said.

The King of the Mountain competition has been running since 1985 and continues to attract the best bowlers in region.

“We really appreciate all the teams coming back each year,” Mr Robards told News Of The Area.

“We thank our sponsors, Barry Bros Butchers and Domina Insurers, for helping to make the event possible.”

Mr Robards said they are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

By The JAFFA TEA Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News 1 November The Club welcomed seven visitors today for the weekly Nominated Triples competition.

It was great to see some old mates from Karuah competing as well as Eric Robb from Wyong BC. They are welcome anytime!

All in all 55 players took part on a beautiful spring day.

There were five teams that managed two wins.

It did not take Mark Hair long to get back into the winners circle.

He anchored the winning team along with partners, Ken Devlin and Col Amos.

(Some say he acquired a French accent whilst over in gay Paree).

Pairs has been replaced for the time being with “Five Dollar Friday”.

The organisers felt that we were not attracting enough bowlers to host a jackpot event.

It remains however as an “open” competition with both men and women able to participate.

The cost of competing has been reduced to $5.00 for a trial period and if this attracts sufficient numbers some prizemoney will be considered.

In other news: It was pleasing to announce that three ambassadors for the Club, Merv Mills, Steve Pell and Greg Pearson cleaned up and were crowned “King of the Mountain” in the recent tournament played at Bulahdelah.

The RSL LifeCare sponsored Versatility day is fast approaching on Wednesday 15 November and last time I looked there

was an opening for just three more players.

This is a big money tournament and all the “big guns” will be out to play.

Should be some good bowls played!

On Saturday 25 November the annual Dolphin Day will be held commencing at 9.00 for 9.30 am start.

The challenge has been thrown down by the lady bowlers and it will be “skirts” v “shirts”.

Gentlemen, we have the honour of the regiment here to protect!

Lunch will be provided after the battle.

Acceptance sheets have been posted for the annual Presentation night on Monday 4 December.

As this is the night where we present the entire Women’s and Men’s Club Championship stars with their awards it would be great to see as many victors as possible attending.

By Margie TIERNEY THE recent Myall Masters inaugural Open Swim at Jimmy’s Beach, could only be described as a huge success.

Dozens of swimmers took to the water to compete in a 600 metre swim or for the very brave a 1.3 kilometre mini marathon.

“There was free entry,

free fruit, free water and a free barbecue at the surf club afterward for the competitors,” Lorraine Lock told News Of The Area.

“There were people from Maitland, Sydney, not just locals,” Lorraine said.

President of the Myall Masters Swimming Club Chris Lock told News Of The Area, “There were prizes for

first past the post, men and women as well as handicap.”

The water temperature was around 22 degrees, there was a light breeze and the water was crystal clear.

Members of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club helped out on the water by ensuring all swimmers were safe and sound.

On the beach, spectators

cheered the winners along with the rest of the field with everyone encouraged and congratulated on completing the swim.
