WHEN you’re a child, there’s not much better than playing on the playground with your buddies.

The children at Salt Ash Public School do not currently have any playground equipment for the students to play on at lunch, or to use for fitness lessons.

This beautiful, small school work tirelessly to provide their students with the very best educational experience at school, and a large part of this experience is also the social interaction with friends, and physical activity.

The school’s hardworking P&C have made it their mission to provide this much needed equipment for their students, and have been fundraising for many years now to raise the funds to support the school and its

On Friday 24 November, for every customer that comes through the door, BP Salt Ash will donate $1 to Salt creation of management areas better reflecting the extent and concentration of PFAS identified in the Defence investigation.

These management areas extend beyond the boundaries of the Investigation Area established by the NSW EPA in 2015 and are consistent with the findings from the Defence investigation.

Quilt and Literature Award Winners

“DON’T SIT DOWN!” This was the advice given to Anna Bay’s Jann Sturdy by the announcer at the 2017 quilting show. You see, Jann more or less scooped the pool with her entries, returning to the table time and again to pick up more prizes.

Others to do well included Lynley Keers, Wendy Nutt, and Maureen Grealy. Some 58 quilts were entered with a further 29 on display over the weekend of November 18th and 19th at Club Lemon Tree.

Wendy Nutt has also

recently won a commendation in the Australian Modern Quilt Show.

The Quilt Show was also chosen as a venue to announce the winners of the Port Stephens Literature Awards 2017. The $1100 in prize money is funded

by PSSC, Club Lemon Tree and entry fees. It has been running for some 15 years under the umbrella of TACE (Tilligerry Adult and Community Education), a not for profit group connected to Port Stephens Shire Council.

This year drew entries from every Australian state

with local writers from Medowie, Tea Gardens and Tanilba Bay featuring in the top 21 awards.

First prize ($500) went to Sophia Field from Victoria with her story ‘Chocolate Milk’. The same story also won the $50 Judges’ award.

Second prize ($300) was taken out by Tasmanian Freya Cox with her entry ‘A Colour of Loss.’

The News Of The Area award ($150) was for ‘A Child Named Warrior written by Rob Viskovich from Lane Cove in Sydney.

q Jann Sturdy and Lloyd Hogg with one of Jann’s prize winning quilts. of Industry – Crown Lands & Water, Crown Reserve Trust Corporate Manager of the Year, at the 2017 Regional Achievement and Community Awards held on Friday 10 November at Marina Views Function Centre.

Dorothea Willey, President of the Tilligerry Habitat Reserve Association told News Of The Area, “The Tilligerry Habitat Reserve Association is thrilled to receive the Managers Award in the Crown Land Reserve category.”

“The Reserve has a 21 year history of regenerating a once unsightly sand mine site into a Habitat for the unique flora and fauna of the Tilligerry Peninsula.”

“This work has been achieved by dedicated volunteers who have given their time selfishlessly to this rehabilitation work.”

The volunteers propagate most of the plantings from

seed, cuttings and rescuing of plants from the areas adjacent to the Reserve itself, and from the wider Peninsula when appropriate.

The Reserve also sells plants to sand mining companies so that they can meet their targets to re-plant native species removed in the mining process.

The group also works closely with local Aboriginal bush teams and has held cultural burns to rejuvenate seed.

Dorothea said “The current Management Committee is committed to ensuring that the work of past volunteers is applauded and cherished, and also that the Reserve move into the future with exciting new projects to further demonstrate and educate the public of the unique place on the Peninsula that the Tilligerry Habitat Reserve enjoys.”

Member for Port Stephens, told News Of The Area, “The Tilli Habitat Association are so deserving of this award, and I congratulate all the dedicated volunteers for the work they’ve done over many years.”

“It’s incredible to think a former sand mine has been rehabilitated into this local piece of paradise, and everyone who visits falls in love with the Tilligerry Habitat, including my own family.”

“It’s one of Port Stephens precious jewels.”

“The project has been a labour of love for many hardworking volunteers over two decades, and this award recognises each and every one of them,” she said.

Changes to Development Control Plan

A SERIES of proposed minor amendments to the Port Stephens Council Development Control Plan 2014 (DCP) have gone on public exhibition for community feedback until Friday 1 December.

Local Environmental Plans guide planning decisions for all local government areas through zoning and development controls.

The DCP supports the Port Stephens Local Environmental Plan 2013, providing detailed planning and design guidelines for how land can be used.

Jeffrey Bretag, Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator, says

feedback is now being sought on how these changes may affect the community.

“When the DCP was adopted in 2015, there was a commitment to continually review the plan and this amendment addresses an array of matters that have arisen since its adoption,” Mr Bretag said.

“We believe the amendments will mostly affect those who regularly submit development applications, but there are several changes we really would like for the community to be aware of, especially around secondary dwellings, shipping containers and sheds.”

“Submissions can be posted, emailed or dropped into Port Stephens Council during the exhibition period,” he said.

WEDNESDAY, 15 November 2017 marked a day in Australia that is sure to become one of historical importance.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released results of the non-binding postal survey undertaken on behalf of the Federal Government.

The question posed, Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry? Was answered by 79.5% of citizens.

In evidence that Australia has undergone a significant cultural shift in the past couple of decades, 61.6% (7 817 247) responded Yes and 38.4% (4 873 987) replied No. Of those who returned their postal votes in the Federal electorate of Paterson, which encompasses the Port Stephens Local Government Area, 65.5% (60 915) voted to change the Law, higher than the national average.

Ms Meryl Swanson MP, Member for Paterson told News Of The Area, “I’d like to reiterate that I have always been a firm Yes voter.”

“Allowing people in our LGBTQI community equal rights will in no way threaten heterosexual marriage.”

“Life’s a team sport and we are stronger and happier when we are united.”

“It’s great that Australians are sending this message of acceptance and telling our

young people: It’s OK to be who you are.”

In acknowledging that not all constituents voted Yes, and that for some this will be a difficult result to accepts, Ms Swanson said, “To those constituents of mine who voted No, I would like to offer the assurance that they will be entitled to religious protections under Dean Smith’s private member’s bill, which received unanimous, multi-party support.”

“It is the best representation of our nation’s intentions.”

Local resident, Ms Francess Zahra was overcome with emotion about the historical result.

Ms Zahra, who lives in Medowie, has been impacted by the issue, like so many others, through family connections.

She told News Of The Area, “When the Yes vote came through, I cried happy tears.”

“Not really just for my son and his partner, but for my granddaughter Hazel.”

“My son has stood bravely against the criticisms and also embraced the positives, but Hazel is a baby and deserves to be treated as any other child living in a happy family with parents who adore her, which they do.”

Local Councillor Mr Giacomo Arnott, who introduced a (failed) motion to support same-sex marriage at a recent Port Stephens council meeting said, “Parliament should have got on with its job from day one and changed the marriage act to reflect what we already knew , that the majority of Australians support same-

“Instead, the Liberal Government wasted $122m of public funds to conduct an opinion poll.”

“I hope that the Marriage Act will be changed swiftly and without obstruction in the Parliament.”

“The Paterson electorate’s strong ‘yes’ vote vindicates my arguments around why I put that motion to Council.”

“All levels of Government exist to provide leadership on issues, and failing to pass that motion was a failure from Council to show leadership in our community; who, as it clearly turns out, support that very issue.”

State Member for Port Stephens, Ms Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “Our region is home to many loving gay couples who will soon enjoy the same right to marry.”

“These couples have been our friends and neighbours for many years and the only change new legislation should bring, is the official recognition of their relationship.”

“The overwhelming majority of people across Australia voted in support of equality.”

“The last outcome anyone wants to see, is legislation which legalises further inequality.”

“In that spirit, it’s also timely to say, that Port Stephens is a beautiful place for weddings and honeymoons.”

“We welcome any couples who will soon be able to marry, to start booking!”

I am an only child and therefore responsible for my parents as they age and eventually pass away. My father wants to be cremated. My mother wants to be buried. I think it would be nice for them to stay together in the one spot.

As if there isn’t enough sombre news at the moment with rare dugongs being caught in commercial fishing nets, Trump on the back foot after trying to put elephant trophy imports back on the agenda, and various other calamities. And now your email.

As much as I don’t want to think about death while eating my afternoon tea, Mr NB, can I use this opportunity to say that the best way to dispose of the dead is in a pod.

Now, I don’t know if these are legal in Australia yet, but I certainly hope, when my time comes, that my family will arrange a burial pod which will turn me into a lovely tree.

Can you imagine how much more aesthetically pleasing graveyards would be if people were put into a pod, complete with seeds, that then sprouted to life (with a bit of help from the organic matter).

Grey gravestone or green tree? Spooky graveyards or lush forests? The choice is pretty easy.

Now, with your particular problem, if dad goes first, you can just pop him on the shelf in a little pot and then place him in the ground with your mother.

If your mother is the first to go, you can always sprinkle your father’s ashes over her burial place.

I really must go now, because my husband is looking over my shoulder, wondering why I am researching burial methods, when I am supposed to be helping him with the gardening.

Family fun Open Day

MEDOWIE Sports and Business Centre threw open their doors and hosted a family fun day to draw their recent competition winner in a way that involved the whole community.

Special guests included Councillor Sarah Smith, who officially opened the morning, and spoke about how impressed she has been with the improvements at the centre, and what is still to come in the future.

Sarah also tried out the newly refurbished squash courts with her son, before drawing the raffle competition.

The raffle competition has been running in the businesses within the Medowie Sports and Business Centre for some time, with the lucky local winner Lyn Picton taking away a P&O cruise to Melbourne for five nights, including tickets to the Australian Open whilst in Melbourne.

Imugi Nationals Trip

IMUGI Taekwondo put a call out to the community to see if anyone would be willing to assist them in fundraising to get all fourteen of their members to Nationals.

The response was overwhelming for this muchloved Medowie business.

In particular, a mother of two of the ‘Star Imugi’s’, Ali Binskin, sprung to action and began planning a Christmas Shopping NIght.

Ali told News Of The Area “Tony and Kell from Imugi are extremely highly thought of in the community and would do anything for anyone, so I happily said I would help raise the money by offering to do the Christmas Shopping Night.”

“We only had two weeks to organise it, but it came together really well, with lots of support.”

Medowie Sports Centre donated the use of their facilities to aid the communities efforts to help these young people attend their Nationals tournament, and Sportz Cafe within the centre agreed to stay open

Ali said, “It was great to see so many people in the community attend the night, and how successful it was for the businesses that were there.”

“The stall holders paid for a spot to attend as well as donating a raffle prize and we had a small entry fee for a lucky door prize as well as the raffle sales.”

“In all we raised $1660 for the families, which has put a huge dent in their money required,” she said.

Kelly O’Brien from Imugi was stunned by the support, telling News Of The Area, ““We are so incredibly grateful and humbled by the generosity shown by our community.”

“Easing the financial burden has taken a massive pressure off these families and allowed them to focus on their training.” “With increased training leading up to the event we are more determined than ever to do our school and community proud.”

“Kumsa humnida!” she said.
