Star Struck shines on

STAR Struck took to the stage this week for their 25th year, with their combined schools mass performance events entitled ‘Shine on’.

Our own Irrawang High School also celebrated their 25 year involvement with Star Struck, as they were in the very first production with choir and dance students.

Wirreanda Public School and Medowie Public School also both had students participate this year.

Star Struck is a performing arts extravaganza presented by the Hunter area of the NSW Department of Education.

They invite students within their school groups and also small group and solo artists, to take part in a production involving every kind of performance art and creative outlets you could imagine.

This year there were matinees on Friday and Saturday, as well as evening shows.

Lue Fagan from Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “Our dance and drama students rehearsed for months, and we also had a selected group of our students asked to perform in small regional ensembles, which was a huge honour.”

“We all know how amazing our Drum Corps are, and they were once again invited to provide pre-show and half-time entertainment.”

PORT Stephens Council met this week for their regular meeting and announced their long-awaited decision on how a loan of $6million is going to be spent across Port Stephens.

Matthew Bartlett from the DVA who manages my case has been a great help as well,” he said.

“With my ‘Road Runner’ I have mobility and independence. It remains the property of the DVA but I have use of it for as long as I need it,” he added.

The dance group danced in the ‘Love Is In The Air’ and ‘Superheroes’ performances.

Ex-Wirreanda student, Kyara Darcy, who has just taken a place at

Broadmeadow School of Performing Arts, was lucky enough to be selected for two small ensemble groups.

She performed as one of eight Disney fairies, and in the primary contemporary ensemble for ‘Fireflies’.

Kyara still resides in Medowie, and dances for local school ‘Dance N Dazzle’.

had 33 students participate in two dances plus the finale.

The first dance was ‘Eye of the Tiger’.

The second was entitled ‘I Wish’, which featured many stars who have now passed.

Medowie Public School students were dressed as David Bowie.

Cultural garden opened OUR Catholic feeder primary school for Medowie’s future Catherine McAuley College, St.Brigid’s Primary School, has had a special week at school, inviting Aboriginal elders and community members to help them to open their new Indigenous Cultural Garden.

Medowie and Tilligerry Indigenous students who attend St Brigid’s were a part of this special occasion, as they celebrated the traditional owners of our land, and the rich cultural heritage they have provided us.

The school has wanted to introduce an Indigenous Cultural Garden at St Brigid’s

for some time.

St Brigid’s applied for a grant from Port Stephens Council under the banner of the Aboriginal Projects Fund, following the advice of the Worimi Green Team.

The school was then contacted by Jennifer Underwood, the Council’s Community Development and Engagement Officer and

Running for Oxfam FOUR dedicated Port Stephens runners have their sights set on a very special goal.

These runners are currently in training to run 100km from Brooklyn to Manly in August in the ‘Oxfam 100 Trailwalker Australia’ event.

One of these passionate runners, Lee Brooks, told News Of The Area, “Along the way, they have pledged to raise $3,300, and we have just hit $1,500.”

The team has chosen the unique name ‘Seven Eight Runners’ as collectively they have seven arms and eight legs.

The team consists of Gai Alder, the 58-year-old team captain, Kara Bisset, a Circus Avalon aerial artist, Lee Brooks, a Medowie mum of three and speedster Dean McHardie, an upper limb amputee, who almost lost his life to melanoma.

As a result of his amputation and developing depression, he took up running as a ‘means of mental survival’.

Lee told News Of The Area, “We all competed in the Ultra Trail Australia 50km solo in May, so completing that base fitness with further hill-based training, we are also running between 6090kms a week, plus gym/ strength work to prepare.”

“We run weekends out in the Watagan Mountains.”

“We have a target time of 22.5 hours to complete the 100kms, a target figure of $3,300 to donate to fighting world poverty, and we are almost halfway there,” she said.

“The cultural garden is about recognising the cultural significance and role of spiritual and cultural wellbeing of the students at St Brigid’s.”

“The identity of Aboriginal people who are linked to this place – the school community itself – is part of the local country as well as each person in it.

“The benefits of the garden extend not only to Aboriginal students and their families, but the whole school community in using the cultural garden and learning about Aboriginal culture.”

Rugby stars of the future

FIVE young Medowie Rugby juniors players have been given the representative nod, in exciting announcements this week that they have been selected for various representative teams.

U15s player Jordan Eade was selected for the second year for the Hunter Wildfires representative team.

His U15s team mate Chris Woodfield was selected for the Mid North Coast Axemen.

Both Jordan and Chris played at the Country Championships at Crescent Head in May, with both their respective teams ending up in the final match, with the Wildfires taking the win in the final minutes.

Jordan then went on to play with Hunter in the State Championships in Sydney, where they took fifth place.

U11s team mates Murray Woodfield, Michael Moffat and Divan Bezuidenhout were all chosen for Hunter Wildfires Development

Squads this season, with Michael and Divan chosen for the U11s squad, and Murray in U10s.

Michael and Divan played in the State Championships last weekend and loved their first taste of rep rugby.

Murray heads to Sydney in July for the U10s Competition.

A Medowie Rugby Club spokesperson told News Of The Area, “The club is thrilled to see its players wanting to take their game to the next level and it’s great that their drive and ability has been noticed by selectors.”

“We hope to see even more players achieve this next season.”

OPINION Dear News Of The Area, AT the last Medowie Progress Association meeting I spoke about the roadworks in Abundance road, in particular the use of spray seal road surfacing and the continued use of a spoon drain on the south eastern side of the road.

Fishing Frenzy For Tilly Men

IT was virtually shoulder to shoulder at the Nelson Bay breakwater when Tilligerry’s Craig Brown and Max Harrison turned up at first light to get stuck into the blackfish over the long weekend.

Travelling schools of luderick (bronzies to the locals) were on the bite and the dynamic duo made the most of it.

Using cabbage weed for bait, they each had their bag limit of ten fish in a very short time.

The fish were full of

spawn, in prime condition and some topped the scales at over a kilo.

Craig gets his supply of bait from the rock pools around Newcastle although the rocky foreshore areas of Lemon Tree Passage and Mallabula are good sources at low water.

“From now until about August, the waters around the new swimming pool at Lemon Tree Passage and the marina come alive with luderick.”

By floating baits past the piles or alongside the moored

boats, fisherfolk are rarely disappointed.

Best results are achieved from a moored tinny as fishing off the marina is banned.

Blackfish make great eating but the secret is in the preparation.

Put the live fish in a keeper net while fishing and bleed them before removing the fillets from the frame.

Scrub the black rib cage lining off with a wet hessian bag and slice the skin off the fillet. Cut out the red lateral line and you’re ready to go.

Chest Wax for a Wish

MEDOWIE local, Nate Gill, has taken up the challenge to wax his chest as part of MakeA-Wish Australia’s ripping new fundraising campaign.

This campaign, ‘Wax for a Wish’ is raising funds to grant the wishes of children and teens battling life-threatening illnesses.

Nate’s family friend, Lucy Newman, understands firsthand the joy such a wish can bring.

At age 9 Lucy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

This marked the beginning of a long and painful journey. She endured numerous tests, treatments and surgeries. At one stage Lucy was unable to walk. She lost her hair. And, tragically, many friends she met in hospital were lost forever.

Make-A-Wish granted Lucy her wish to ride the Puffing Billy, a century-old steam train that runs through the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria. Lucy loves trains

and describes her wish experience as “the best thing ever”.

Nate wants to help others like Lucy experience their wish by raising money through ‘Wax for a Wish’.

Thanks to the generosity of many, Nate is currently in first place nationally for individuals participating in this fundraiser.

After Nate’s initial target of $1000 was reached, his dad, Adam Gill, agreed to join the cause and wax his legs if donations reached $1500.

Donations to Nate’s Wax for a Wish have now exceeded $1500 and a new goal has been set.

Nate’s 15 year old brother, Jonathan Gill, has agreed to wax the fuzz above his upper lip if donations reach $2000 by 8 pm this Friday.

The waxing of the Gill boys will take place on 23 June at a private fundraising event.

In light of this incident as well as a previous one on Abundance Road where a similar car went into the same spoon drain near the produce store, I would like to see a safety improvement done of curb guttering on the south eastern side as a minimum.

I would like to note that the slope of the ground here from northwest

to southeast would warrant more drainage requirements than a curb gutter road edge on the northwest side, especially during heavy weather events.

By the way, I would also like to add that the road workers are doing a great job.

They are all very pleasant and are making the disruption to us as minimal as possible.

Gravel causes concern surface during construction as well as afterwards as the stones become dislodged.

The spoon drain on the south eastern side now has a very steep bank due to the widening of the road and is not even necessary as it only will collect the runoff from half of the road surface.

Curb guttering would be far safer.

THE highly anticipated day of Premier Rugby didn’t disappoint with Medowie’s local lads doing their town proud with wins galore spread across all grades with Juniors, 19s, Premier 3s, Premier 2s and Premier 1s on the day, as either a Marauders team or Nelson Bay Gropers supplemented with Medowie players.

The Juniors, with U8s, 11s, 12s and 15s set a great platform for the day, and as the crowd really started to build, the premier round kicked off with our Colts from Nelson Bay Gropers taking the field, taking their first win of the season 29-20.

We got more of the same tough rugby the Marauders are known for as the boys kept their opposition at arm’s length and the Marauders came away with a 20-10 win.

Premier 2 saw the Marauder supplemented Gropers take on Waratah.

Without a win this season for the Gropers, and with an overheard comment from a few local Waratah insiders that they would be giving the Gropers a bit of a touch up, the end result was nothing short of impressive.

The Nelson Bay Gropers smashed Waratah in a very comprehensive first win of 50-5.

With wins across the board for every game adding extra pressure to the Premier 1 team, they dug in and showed exactly what they are made of, taking down Waratah 15-7 and giving a clean sweep for the Groper and Marauder Rugby Day. Marauders representative, Lisa Cook, told News Of The Area, “We knew as a club that taking on the challenge of Premier rugby this year was going to need us all to step up, and step up we did, everyone including our fantastic committee, volunteers, sponsors, supporters and players showed what rugby is all about and pulled off what some in recent years thought was impossible.”
