MEDOWIE Public School students and staff put on a series of performances this week that will not be forgotten.

The ‘Medowie’s Night of Nights’ performance showcased the talents of students through music, dance, drama and technology.

Based on the work being done within the classrooms across all stages, the students put together performance pieces to showcase, highlighting their skills and talents.

Over a series of matinee and night performances, the students impressed the crowds with their professional, confident and vibrant performances.

A 34-degree day, tinder dry bush and a howling wind gusting to70kph saw a total fire ban in force recently and out-of-control bushfires ravaging the state of NSW. Tilligerry Rural Fire Service responded with call outs to major blazes as far afield as Wallaroo, the Richmond Vale Railway Museum near Kurri, Salt Ash and Medowie.

As many as three of the four Tilligerry tankers were deployed at any one time to fight the fires.

One special unit is always kept back on standby at the new million dollar station as a village protection unit.

After parting on compatible terms, my girlfriend and I remain friends on social media. In my feed this week, Facebook offered me to share one of their ‘you’ve been friends for three years’ collages. You know, the one that shows photos of you both and then the number of times you’ve ‘liked each other’ (1035 times). I did share it, but it has since been removed.

VOTES are counted, results are in, and Central Ward residents can now welcome their official new Central Ward councillors for Port Stephens Council.

Steve Tucker, Sarah Smith and Chris Doohan took out the tightly contested top spots to claim victory in Central Ward, ahead of their counterparts.

Steve Tucker topped the ward polls at 28.84 percent, with Sarah Smith on 25.47 percent and Chris Doohan taking the final spot at 18.09 percent.

Central Ward is well represented this term, with

opportunities for all.

Sarah Smith is a newcomer to Port Stephens Council, but not new to Port Stephens.

She resides in Anna Bay and manages Crest Birubi Beach.

Sarah is keen to assist in restoring the confidence that ratepayers have in Port Stephens Council.

Chris Doohan is a wellknown face in Medowie, a fierce supporter of the Medowie Sports Club, the previous Deputy Mayor of Port Stephens Council and a strong advocate of anyone needing a hand in Port Stephens.

Or worse, tell me you didn’t use the angry emoji when she posted some girls’ night out pictures or make a comment like: ‘You look like you’re having fun. I’m just at home eating lamb shanks on my own, you know, the recipe we discovered together on our second anniversary when I took you out to an expensive restaurant, bought you flowers and opened the car door, because you’re worth it. Anyway, have a good night. Stay safe. Call if you need anything.’

First day at Council MAYOR Ryan Palmer, spent his first day in the office today after being officially declared Mayor of Port Stephens on Saturday 16 September 2017.

Councillor Palmer has said it is an honour to have been elected to lead Port Stephens Council for the next three years.

"It's very humbling to have received such a strong endorsement from the Port Stephens community," he said.

"I ran on a platform of building relationships with key people in order to deliver the best possible outcome for the community of Port Stephens and that's what I aim to do.

Mayor Palmer and the new Council will be sworn in at the first meeting of Council next Tuesday 26 September 2017.

New building and workshops for TAG

THE Tilligerry Arts Group has some exciting new events on the horizon, and they’re inviting Port Stephens residents to join them.

At 10am on Tuesday 19 September, the Tilligerry Arts Group (TAG) open their brand new building at 12 Meredith Street, Lemon Tree Passage, in the old Lemon Tree Passage Fire Brigade building.

The move to this building, the third residence for TAG, and initial basic refurbishment was made possible by a number of very supportive parties who have generously provided financial, physical and moral support.

Di Stubbs, TAG publicity officer, told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council granted a Licence of

Occupation, while councillor Steve Tucker organised council ward funds for basic building repairs.”

“Donations were gratefully received from Tilligerry Lions Club and Club Lemon Tree while Mayor

Arrest leads REPORT to fewer break and enters

THE incidence of break and enter offences have been fewer since the arrest of an alleged culprit according to Senior Constable Luke Rogers from Lemon Tree Passage police.

“Residents should still

be vigilant, however, and lock up their homes and cars as these offences are still happening although at a lesser rate,” he said.

Longriders put on a fine show

Fourteen trophies and prizes were given out to various categories with the day being received very well

THE weather turned on a much finer show for this year’s Longriders Christian Motorcycle Club charity bike show and family fun day.

This special event, held annually in September at Tomago, was once again a huge success.

Crowds flowed through the gates, with plenty of families joining in for the family-friendly event.

The jumping castles, pony rides and petting zoo were kept busy and the food tent served people all day.

There was over 150 bikes with around 20 show cars.

Marching Matilda off to USA

THE Marching Koalas are in full preparation mode for their 2017 USA Tour.

Medowie has two band members attending the tour this year, Jamie Pont on trumpet, and Matilda Logvyn on flute and piccolo.

News Of The Area spoke with Matilda Logvyn about the exciting trip.

“I am so excited to be travelling to America with the band, as tours not only bring amazing opportunities, they also strengthen, and unite us as one band, one sound.”

The Marching Koalas, consisting of around 65 members, leaves Australia on 27 December.

They begin with a five day homestay in Pasadena, California, where they join with an American marching band, to participate in the infamous ‘Rose Parade’.

During the stay, they will take part in events with the Rose Parade, including the parade, ‘bandfest’ and a look backstage at the parade.

The parade is viewed by millions of people worldwide.

The band will also perform at Disneyland and at various places across America.

As part of their tour, each band has been asked to make a video, focusing on the theme of ‘making a difference in the community’.

Matilda and one of the band directors, Candece Bergin-Brown, put the Newcastle Marching Koalas video together.

Many of the bands in America have 300 or more members; with only 70 or

so members, the Marching Koalas could use a few more votes.

Number One in Tucker Box

FOR more than any other candidate, Central Ward residents put a number one on the ballot paper beside long time serving Port Stephens councillor Steve Tucker’s name at the recent elections.

At Tanilba he polled some 777 of the 1576 cast votes; at LTP it was 468 from 1000 and at Salt Ash the count was 189 from 607.

He also polled well in Medowie.

“I actually exceeded my quota by around 500 which I passed on to Chris Doohan. He in turn had an excess which flowed on to Anna Bay’s Sarah Smith,” he said.

“We look like having a progressive line-up with our new mayor Ryan Palmer at the helm,” he added.

“It’s roads, roads, roads as far as I’m concerned and the $1 million we secured as a loan will be ploughed back into Tanilba’s streets.”

A closer look at the voting pattern showed an increase in the donkey vote and a more worrying trend of informal voting which was around 20 percent of the votes cast.
