MEDOWIE Community Preschool has enriched the lives of our young ones with quality education for the last 31 years, founded on the love of community.

The community quite literally planted the roots of this preschool, with the building being funded using only a small amount of Council funds, the rest fundraised tirelessly by Medowie community members.

This uniquely created preschool, quite unlike the historical story of any other Port Stephens Council run preschool, has been facing a tough situation for the last four years.

In 2011, Port Stephens Council introduced the Community Leasing Policy, followed by a Review of Children’s Services in 2012.

These changes meant that Port Stephens Council needed the Preschool to sign a new lease that would potentially

lead to it being financially unable to continue to provide the current service level.

After four long years of contract negotiations, the outcome was still inadequate.

The new 2017 committee has worked tirelessly to find a resolution.

Councillor Chris Doohan spent time

listening to committee concerns, facilitating meetings with Council staff and the committee, before realising the situation needed a political solution.

A notice of motion was put before Council and passed on Tuesday night, ensuring the Community Preschool can continue.

President of the Medowie Community Preschool, Jacqui Hrast, told News Of The Area, “Tuesday’s Notice Of Motion secured the long term future of this well loved community service.”

“The intent is now for our Pre-school to move to a 30-year lease, with

a much more reasonable rent that reflects its low fees to families and its independence from Council.”

“Councillor Doohan’s leadership and support was critical in achieving this outcome and we are extremely grateful to him and the other seven councillors who voted in favour of the Motion,” she said.

As a final gesture, Cr Doohan proposed that monies already paid by the Pre-school be returned.

This option was then added as an amendment to the Notice of Motion and unanimously

approved.

Cr Doohan asked that this money be utilised to improve parking and access for the disabled.

Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Chris Doohan, told News Of The Area, “It is heartwarming to be able to say that one of the memorable things this Council has achieved during this sitting term, is that we have ensured the future of this wonderful Pre-school is safe, and its legacy will continue.”

ON Saturday 9 September, the annual Bike Show and Family Fun Day is being held at Tomago.

Each year the show has great success in connecting with the community through supporting selected charities.

Over the years it has been held at Medowie and Swan Bay. Following the success of last years Bike Show, it will once again be returning

to Tomago Bowling Club. Attendance has continued to increase each year with 2016 realising over 1000 people through the gate.

Continuing to develop community connections and with more sponsors being involved, this year is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

Longriders Christian Motorcycle Club (CMC) is a non-profit Christian organisation that has been established for over 25 years. .

The aim of the day is to provide a family friendly atmosphere where motorcycle enthusiasts, car enthusiasts and other members of the local community can come along and enjoy a day of bikes, cars, food, music, friendship and refreshments.

“Sadly, people still dump rubbish at our doorstep and steal items from our bins and from boxes left near the

door,” she added.

“Dumped goods have included dirty disposable nappies, grass clippings, mattresses, broken crockery, electrical items and furniture.”

“On top of this we get shoplifters stealing items of clothing from inside the store itself,” she said.

“This costs us time and money which means that we can’t do as much for the poor and needy.”

“The public can help us by

keeping an eye out for the dumpers and thieves and recording their car number plates or taking pictures on their mobile phones,” she said.

“We will forward these to the police,” Carol told News Of The Area.

“We would very much prefer residents to bring donated items in during business hours and our staff will assess them on the spot.

This way the problem will be a lot smaller,” she said.

THE Medowie Country Women’s Association (CWA) study a country each year that has an Australian Embassy.

This year their chosen study area was the beautiful country of Nepal.

By Rachael VAUGHAN OPPOSITION Leader and MP Luke Foley joined MP Kate Washington at Medowie on Tuesday to make some annoucments around the longawaited high school.

The site, deemed for the High School, was originally purchased in 1982.

It was puchased for Public Education before Wirreanda Public School (adjacent to it) was built and running.

Wirreanda Public School welcomed its first students in 1985 with students hoping, back then, to be attend a local high school.

Those students have long finished school, but Medowie is

still waiting.

Jan Noake, who became Assistant Principal at Wirreanda Public school in 1986, told News Of The Area, “I just cannot believe that after all this time, Medowie is still waiting to have an educational option for all school choices, whether it be public or private.”

“Medowie’s statistics for

growth in the next ten years are only going to see more and more children needing to be bussed out of this town.”

“I have long since retired, yet Medowie is still waiting for a public option for children to continue their schooling within the area,” she said.

Labor leader Luke Foley told News Of The Area, “It’s time Medowie had a Public High School, and parents had a choice of where they send their children.”

“I have looked at the figures,

and children traveling in such high numbers out of Medowie and into Raymond Terrace and Newcastle has to change.”

Kate Washington, MP Member for Port Stephens told the media and families that the Labor party is wanting to confirm their commitment that they would plan and provide a high school for Medowie if the next state election were to put the Labor party back in the top spot.

She has trekked in Nepal and witnessed firsthand this wonderful country.

Her insights about the country and its people, and especially the women, were at times confronting.

This celebration was even more special in that Medowie CWA had the World President of the ‘Association of Country Women of the World’, Ruth Shanks, speak to the attendees about the work the Association does for those women in hardship around the world.

Stephanie Van Huisstede from Medowie CWA, told News Of The Area, “The women in attendance were shown some wonderful images of women who were given the opportunity to educate themselves with various skills, which allowed them to purchase equipment, set up businesses, educate their children and take responsibility for making their own and their children’s lives better.

To celebrate the people of Nepal and the Medowie CWA fruit of the year, the cooks prepared a feast for all the guests.

They dined on a meat and vegetable stew and a chicken dish served with rice.

For dessert, they had quandong (the Medowie CWA 2017 flora study) jam, coconut slice and cheesecake with quandong puree.

THE Medowie Lions Art and Craft Show is on again this year, and there’s a talented group of creators who have the perfect motivation to help you get ready in time to submit one of your own creations.

A group of like-minded artisans and crafters known as ‘ArtyCrafty’ is a Lions initiative to get people together to share their skills and work on various art and craft projects.

It is the hope of the group that participants who come along will gather confidence to expand their creativity and enter the Medowie Lions Art and Craft Show.

They get together every fortnight on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, from 1pm to 4pm in the Boronia Room at the Medowie Community Hall.

Cost is $5, and tea and coffee is provided.

All ages are welcome at the ArtyCrafty group, and as entrants in the show, with last year’s youngest entrant being seven years old.

This year’s Medowie Lions Art & Craft show is on 6 and 7 October 2017 at the Medowie Community Hall.

It is not a competition but a showing only and all works must be for sale.

Works must be ‘hang ready’ and cost $5 per work for adults and $2 for high school students.

Any medium is welcome, and this year’s committee hope to see some more photography entered into the competition.

They also welcome school groups to take on a school project and encourage students to enter a piece.

Ruth White, from ArtyCrafty, told News Of The Area, “This year we hope to have many more entries including photography.”

“The cake was cut by our Foundation members, Margaret and Laurie Dicker, which was very special,” he said.

Laurie was president of Raymond Terrace Rotary Club, Medowie’s sponsoring Rotary Club, when the Probus Club was inaugurated in 2003.

The Club meets at the Medowie Community Centre at 10am on the third Wednesday of each month and still has vacancies for retired or semi-retired people of both genders who would enjoy their social activities.

The Probus Club is a

wonderful place to meet new people and listen to guest speakers on a variety of subjects.

The Club also arranges other functions through the year with trips to exciting places, fun lunch days with live entertainment and many other celebrations.

The Probus motto is Fun, Friendship and Fellowship and this is very much entrenched in the Medowie Club.

THE Combined Probus Club of Medowie recently celebrated its 14th Birthday with a lunch at Bella Vista at Mayfield.

The ambience at Bella Vista was superb with the members showing their usual enthusiasm for such functions.

The old Bella Vista building, which was built for the first general manager of BHP, is the ideal venue, but unfortunately will cease hosting such occasions later this year.

Terry Corcoran, from Medowie Probus, told News Of The Area, “The meal was haute cuisine and was very much enjoyed by all present.”

care for her mother who is recuperating from a recent illness.

Nicole has very happy memories of the school and her childhood growing up in Tanilba Bay. “I always feel that ‘I’m home’ when I come back,” she said.

“The school consisted of about six classrooms; there was a great sense of belonging with much more personal contact.”

The Easter hat parade was a fun time and we really cared about one another and the town,” she said.

“There was much more freedom in those times. We played in the bush, swam in the bay and always felt safe. Koalas, kangaroos and echidnas were common.

It was very much an outdoor lifestyle before the electronic era took over children’s lives,” she added.

“My dad was in the bushfire brigade and we were given rides on the truck and Santa would

throw us bags of lollies at Christmas time.”

“There was also a big bonfire and cracker night beside the fire station on the long weekend,” she said.

“The Fire Brigade and the RAAF even got together one day and blew up dangerous trees in the playground with high explosives while the kids watched on,” she added.

“The big difference I notice in children these days is the lack of respect that they show to authority figures such as parents, teachers and police.”

“These days there is always some excuse for bad behaviour and teachers spend far too much time with problem children.

Good kids just don’t get a fair go with the way things are in this modern age,” she said.

“I’ll be here for about six months and look forward to meeting up with my school friends from yesteryear. I hope they still recognise me,” she added.

ON social media recently, somebody posted a picture of the stone ‘gates’ at the entrance to Tanilba when the road was still dirt.

It got over 100 ‘likes’ and many queries from people who wanted to know about our early settlers and developers.

THANKS to a grant from NSW Office of Sport, the Medowie Little Athletics Club has made a significant improvement to their facilities.

They have used grant funding to put in a new kitchen in their clubhouse, which they are excited to use this season.

Medowie Little Athletics Club has been at their present site at Kindlebark Oval for approximately 15 years.

Up until now, the club has had to make do with little more than a bench, sink, pie warmer and hot water urn.

This new kitchen will mean they can finally

prepare more items for sale for their 200 or more registered athletes, spectators, family and friends.

Bunnings Port Stephens donated all the labour to put the kitchen together and install it, as well as donating necessary material and findings required for the job.

Medowie Little Athletics Club President, Jason Walls told News Of The Area, “This kitchen installation is a great improvement for this community facility.”

“It will really help improve a facility that benefits the whole community, not just little athletics.”

Luckily our family historians published a book about it all some 20 years ago and got first hand accounts from old timers before they passed on.

The book’s first publication of 600 copies sold out and the second imprint of 500 is now almost gone.

AFL women’s players, the Nelson Bay Marlins, who have enjoyed a friendly relationship with Port Stephens Power for a while now, decided that sharing is certainly caring as they worked together on this new venture.

Port Stephens Power Women’s AFL team announced their decision to play in the 2018 season today, inviting players, officials and the media along to celebrate their news.

They are putting the word out there, and they want women from Port Stephens and beyond to come along and have a look at what Women’s AFL is all about.

Mel Nelson, President of Port Stephens Power AFL Club, told News Of The Area, “I love the social aspect of the club, as well as getting fit and enjoying a sport I’ve loved since I was a kid.”

Nations of Origin

THE PCYC Nations of Origin tournament, hosted in Port Stephens this year, was a wonderful success, with Indigenous nations across the state being represented at an impressive standard across three sports.

Rugby League, Futsal and Netball were contested on grounds around Port Stephens and Newcastle, in a competition that promotes students of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous descent working together, with a focus on the importance of taking their education seriously.

With a focus on four main areas, reconciliation, education, cultural identity and sport, Nations of Origin aims to increase school retention and positive interaction between Aboriginal and non-

Aboriginal students with its entry requirements.

Each team representing at Nations of Origin must have a 70-30 split of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, who must all hold an attendance rate at school of 80 percent or more.

First on the program was the Netball comp, held at Raymond Terrace Netball Courts.

Tightly contested finals between Kamilaroi, Wiradjuri, Awabakal and Dunghutti saw Kamilaroi and Awabakal meet in the grand final.

Awabakal, a Newcastle based tribal area adjacent to Port Stephens Worimi people, walked away the proud winners on the day.

EMILY Whittington started doing recreational gymnastics when she was just six years old, and her potential was quickly noticed by her coaches at Queanbeyan, who offered her a chance with their competitive program.

While with Queanbeyan, Emily competed in several competitions, including the State Titles in Sydney, from levels 1-5.

When the family moved to Port Stephens, Emily started training at Gosford Gymnastics.

Emily was training three to four sessions per week, for up to four hours per session,

with each session requiring 90 minutes of travel each way.

This year, Emily advanced to Level 7, as a junior.

She continued to train hard, and managed to perform very well at the recent Country Championships at the Hunter Stadium in July this year.

This year, she finished first for her ribbon, hoop, and ball routines, second for her clubs routine, and first overall for level 7 Junior.

Her coach, Michaela Pendleton, told News Of The Area, “I am really pleased with the progress that Emily has made since last year’s competition season.”

“She has shown a great deal of determination and perseverance this year, and the hard work has paid off.”

“I look forward to the rest of the competition season and Emily’s further improvement,” she said.
