TANILBA Golf Club will be hosting a qualifying round of the annual ‘Holden Scramble’ on 13 August.

Golfers from any club can participate as long as they have a registered handicap.

The entry fee is $39.50 for each of the four individuals who wish to play in the Ambrose team event.

An Ambrose competition is such that the team tees off and the four of them then hit their second shot from where they deem the best ball finished up.

On and on it goes with some remarkably low scores achieved.

Handicaps are factored in and teams with a specialist big driver, an expert chipper and a deadly putter fare well.

Regional winners go to Queensland where the ultimate winners each get a Holden car.

This issue was raised in the meeting, and Ms King said, “The ALP is currently developing policy and I am taking the opportunity to speak with GPs and specialists.”

The recent Federal budget resulted in the freeze on Medicare contributions only being slightly alleviated.

“Bulk Billing rates have declined and the freeze won’t be fully lifted until 2020, doing damage to our system,” Ms King said.

THE fellows at Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed are making it known that they’re always open for new members.

Their new headquarters opened this month in Boomerang Park at Raymond Terrace, and they are settling in well and ready to expand services in their fantastic new venue.

Being the most local men’s shed to Medowie and Tilligerry, they currently have a large number of members from our area, but they say they would love some more to join their Raymond Terrace contingent.

told News Of The Area, “We are always on the lookout for people who would like to join us.”

“We’ve all got a skill we can share, and we have a great time with all the projects and services we offer the community.”

The Men’s Shed is not limited to the woodwork pieces we have all come to know and appreciate at local markets.

The group also has a fishing group, cards events, metalwork and computer classes.

They are also wanting to begin leatherwork and lead light at the shed.

I am having murderous thoughts towards my Internet Service Provider. Do you have any words of wisdom?

Ms HJ, Boat Harbour Dear Ms HJ, I hear you loud and clear. Remember the good old days before we did everything online? The good old days when we worked in workplaces.

I yearn for those days, Ms HJ, because we were not controlled by some Internet-Cloud-Modem-NBN-Cable-thingy that was prone to failure at random moments tied to deadlines.

I have this very same problem at my place.

I’m sure I’m on a most-wanted list with my ISP, due to the many thinly-veiled threats I make to go on a long-haul flight and track them down, with their lousy service and ‘please hold for a survey’ rubbish, even though I’ve been waiting for two hours for an as-yet unresolved issue.

My most recent Internet dilemma was nothing to do with my provider, apparently, but an ant nest in the fuse box.

These were not your run-of-the-mill ants.

No, they were suicide bombers, hell-bent on blowing up my fuse box by electrocuting themselves.

The answer for you is to go to a free Wi-Fi venue, but of course they close at hours not commensurate with late night writing.

You also have to get out of your pyjamas and maybe attend to some basic personal hygiene matters.

And you have to keep ordering food, which seriously diminishes your earnings, particularly when you go to a swanky café with ocean views.

I can only empathise and suggest that there are some great views to be had at Wi-Fi-friendly eateries in the Bay. You may not get much work done, but you may see a whale breach or a camel plod across the sand dunes, and your blood pressure should be temporarily lowered.

That is until a gang of grotty children decide to sit next to you and their table manners are so appalling that you end up with bits of their guacamole into your keyboard.

Try working under those conditions.

chemotherapy and struggle for months with the illness.

Jordy had a special bond with her Grandad and keeps a photo of him on her bedside table.

Her family report that Jordyn has a very loving nature, always wanting to lend a helping hand, or be the first to offer a kind word if somebody is upset.

Long time parishioner Lachie McKinnon told News Of The Area, “Our annual garage sale and market day, held over two weekends, raises around $4000 and this goes to the Josifus Bible College in New Delhi, India.”

“On top of this, our monthly sausage sizzle at the shopping centre nets around $300 and we use these funds to assist Jacqui Wood to fit out classrooms at a mission in Gono New Guinea.”

Jordyn decided straight after the cut was finished that she would like to grow her hair again so she can repeat the process in another couple of years.

When asked why she wanted to donate her hair, Jordyn told News Of The Area, “Because Grandad had cancer and I wanted to try to help kids that have cancer, so that if they lose their hair they can have my hair and not feel left out at school.”

“Then kids will still play with them and not treat them differently.”

TILLIGERRY Habitat turned on a fine day for their open day as part of Naturefest, with something for everyone on the running sheet.

Up first was a special human koala activity for attendees to participate in, creating a giant koala drawing using human bodies in an open field and filmed by a drone.

Mark McDougall, a surveyor from North Point Surveys, drew up the Koala, digitised it on his system and with survey instruments, then came along to the open day to lay out the design with his wife,

Mark told News Of The Area “I was really excited to see this project become a reality.”

She told News Of The Area, “It was a lot of fun for all ages today, celebrating the local koalas that call the habitat home.”

“It certainly showed us all what a great asset this habitat is in Port Stephens, not to mention it highlighted the hard work of their volunteers.”

Tilligerry Habitat is a wonderful outing for the family, situated at the end of King Albert Avenue in Tanilba Bay. They are open daily from 9am to 3pm, and entry is free.

By John SAHYOUN LIKE most regions in Australia, the 2016 Census revealed a sharp rise in the number of residents with no religious affiliation.

Myall Coast Catholic Parish Pastoral Coordinator, Sister Libbey Byrne, said there are a broad range of reasons for the increase.

“Australia is a deeply spiritual place, you’ll hear people saying I’m spiritual but not religious,” she said.

“People sometimes equate religion with going to church and believing a certain set of doctrines, they don’t see that religion is about a relationship with God.” In Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest, the number of people who ticked ‘No Religion’ jumped from 14.7 percent in 2011 to 22.2 percent last year.

The figures, recently released from the Australian

Bureau of Statistics, show similar trends in the rest of the region, with a five percent increase in those selecting ‘No Religion’ in Karuah and a seven percent rise in Bulahdelah.

For the first time, the 2016 Census had ‘No Religion’ listed as the lead option on the questionnaire, raising concerns that the ‘donkey vote’ could have inflated results.

Sr Byrne said others who “equate religion as going to church” may have selected ‘No Religion’ simply because they do not attend services.

“Some people are religious but don’t understand they are, it is about relationships, rather than just organised religion,” she said.

Sr Byrne told News Of The Area, the Census figures show “the church has a lot of work to do”.

“I think the sexual abuse crisis has let people down badly, we present one front but then there are those who don’t practise what they preach,” she said.

“I think that’s part of why people have become disillusioned and don’t want to identify with those groups.”

Sr Byrne said, “Christian churches need to take a good look at people and see what their real needs are and how we can help.”

“We need to look outwards and not inwards,” she said.

Medowie Mini Marauders U8s Take over Sydney

OUR very own Mini Marauders did us all proud last weekend when the Medowie Marauders Under 8s helped raise the curtain for the Waratahs v Jaguars Super Rugby fixture.

Unfortunately not even the presence of our little champions was enough to get the Waratahs over the line.

It’s been one of those seasons for the Waratahs, but the result of the Super Rugby game was inconsequential as the experience of watching some of their rugby heroes live in action was worth much more.

The team were given the opportunity, along with other teams, to play in the pre-match at Allianz stadium when the Waratahs played against the Argentinian team the Jaguars.
