Big numbers to Snak n Rap event By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE ‘Snak n Rap’ event was a hit on the weekend, with nearly one hundred young people turning out to celebrate and join in on the fun. This was the first of a series of three “Snak n Rap” events that are being held at the Medowie Skate Park. These community events are being funded by Port Stephens Council under the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) ‘Hey Tosser Campaign’. They would not be possible without the support of the Medowie community, young people, parents, schools and other groups, such as the Medowie Lions Club and the Medowie Neighbourhood Watch crew. ‘Snak n Rap’ also recognise the ongoing support from Port Stephens Deputy Mayor Cr

This series of ‘Snak n Raps’ also included youth workers from ‘UP&UP’ running creative workshops at both Medowie Public School and Wirreanda Public School. Shane from ‘UP&UP’ told News Of The Area, “During these workshops, students were encouraged to think about what it means to have a safe and litter free Skate Park and, using drawing activities, students came up with images, symbols and messages designed to encourage people to stop littering.” “All students contributed fantastic ideas, drawings and messages.” “For this event, one of the ideas was chosen to be the message, and that was “Just Bin It” “Just Bin It” was an idea from a group of students, inspired by the Michael Jackson song “Beat It” with its catchy chorus changed from Just Beat It, to Just Bin It. Using this message, todays ‘Snak N Rap’ included art activities
around this message of “Just Bin It” In other words, put your rubbish in the bin. Participants participated in spray painting and drawing activities using stencils of Michael Jackson and stencils of the words “Just Bin It”. This message was also used to have conversations with Skate Park users about how they can ensure that the Skate Park stays clean and welcoming for everyone, Medowie Neighbourhood Watch and Medowie Lions were also on hand, with Neighbourhood Watch providing a lolly guessing competition, and Lions cooking a BBQ lunch for everyone. News Of The Area Construction of new Sports Club By Rachael VAUGHAN THE realisation of the Medowie Sports and Community Club (MSCC) took a major step forward this week with Port Stephens Council opening its call for tenders to construct the Clubhouse, bowling green and ancillaries, such as parking lot and playground equipment, for the Ferodale Road site. As expected, Chairman of the Medowie Sports and Community Club, Craig Baumann, was thrilled about this long awaited announcement. “The MSCC will be a fantastic community facility for everyone of whatever age in Medowie and it will be a true family facility run for and by all who call Medowie

TOMAREE High School Students spent some valuable hours finding out about the career pathways available to them at the Real Futures Foundation Careers Expo. The Expo saw industry sectors represented including Hospitality

Man charged with MURDER after woman dies in house fire FROM Page 1 Rosemount Drive on Saturday 7 July (12:30am), after reports of an explosion and a fire. Once firefighters extinguished the blaze, they located the body of a 76-year-old woman inside the home. It was treated as suspicious. Police linked the alleged crime with a car collision, some 50klm away, that occurred within an hour of the blaze. At about 1.20am, in the early hours of the morning, police responded to reports a Nissan X-Trail collided with a truck on the Pacific Highway, about 5km north of Bulahdelah. The driver of the Nissan was taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard suffering serious injuries. On Monday 9 July, Police charged the 69-year-old with murder (DV), and destroying property with intent to endanger life. He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 6 September.

News Of The Area The Community Garden is an open garden situated in the grounds of the Tomaree Community College at Nelson Bay who are using their green
thumbs to grow produce using organic principles. With strawberries, lettuce, shallots and a host of other vegetables, the garden is prolific. Kathy Yeo a member of the Community Garden group told News Of The Area, “We meet three times a week when we are available and work in the garden for a couple of hours.” Kathy believes that

THERE’S a special place where you can connect with locals in the community while growing produce. The Community Garden is situated in the grounds of the Tomaree Community College at Nelson Bay is an open garden which the community can work in and eat the results of their labours. A small group of locals
working in the garden with other members of the group is a fun and inclusive activity. “The great thing about the garden is when we finish working we can collect food to take home for our tables.” The garden team meets Monday Wednesday and Saturday mornings between 9.30am and 11.30am and offers their produce for sale to anyone who drops in. “We are very proud of our garden,” she said. There is also have a selection of ornamental plants for sale as well. There is evidence that gardening is good for your health and wellbeing with studies showing that gardeners and their children eat healthier diets than non-
gardeners. Gardening is also recognised as a form of stress relief, which can increase health and wellbeing. Gardeners can also benefit from finding direction in the dirt providing a sense of purpose and drive to achieve an end goal. In community gardens such as the one at Tomaree Community College this becomes a shared experience. The Gardening Group work together as a team and would like to invite members of the community to drop in and join them in growing beautiful produce in a wonderful community.

Koala Hospital Stage 1 Complete By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephens Koalas are keen to share the completion of Stage One of the Koala Hospital at One Mile Beach with the community. Funding attained through the State and Federal Governments has seen the stage completed. The fenced pens for koala rehabilitation are up and running with some rather gorgeous residents enjoying their recuperation. Carers and leaf gatherers are very appreciative of the new storage space for the koalas feed leaf. Fresh leaf is gathered continually to ensure that the koalas in care have a fresh supply with a variety of leaves on offer. Port Stephens Koalas will need one tonne of fresh leaves every two days to care for 15-18 koalas. The work completed is just the start of the vision that is coming together at Council’s Treescape at One Mile Beach and the recently pledged $3 million dollars in funding for the hospital and care facility, will see the development of a sustainable tourism enterprise which will eventually sustainably fund the care of sick and injured koalas in Port Stephens. Ron Land Secretary of Port
Stephens Koalas told News Of The Area, “in 2013 we had 160 koalas come into care, in 2017 that number was reduced to 60, with 140 recorded deaths in the last 5 years.” He believes our koala population is in crisis with only 400 left in the wild. Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “From the time when I first spoke with Port Stephens Koalas to make an initial plan and to see what they have achieved, with the funding I secured is amazing, and I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the future.” Ms Washington believes that it is facilities like this which will ensure our grandkids can see koalas in the wild. It is a strong investment in our future both ecologically and environmentally. “I am enormously grateful to the hard working Port Stephens Koalas volunteers,” she said. The work to date has been in the majority funded by a $124,000 grant from the State Government attained through Kate Washington and a further $13,283 from Meryl Swanson MP.

Indigo dressed herself quickly so she could help a friend in need. Eliza Weston from Raymond Terrace Public School, for being extremely respectful whilst attending an excursion to Murrook Cultural Centre. High rise threatens good works Dear News Of The Area,
NELSON Bay is finally getting some action – both from Council - the Yacaaba St extension, support for the recent volunteer clean-up and an exciting new public domain plan – and from the private sector with recent approvals for two modest sized apartment buildings (3 and 6 storeys) and townhouses. But if Council approves a new DA for a 10 storey apartment building on the temporary car site at Yacaaba and Donald Sts, all this good
work will be wasted. Tower blocks of this height are not only double the current height limit but are completely out of character for Nelson Bay, as the community keeps saying loud and clear. In 2017, Council inexplicably approved a similar height tower block on Church St, and yet the crane sits idle a year later. If Council continues to allow such buildings, either on the Yacaaba St site or elsewhere in the town, it will at best only bring more holiday apartments empty for most of the year, and not the permanent

residents that we all want to see, but who want a different style and scale of housing. Towers will also block existing views, overshadow large areas and compound the parking problem. Dear Mr TG, Art is such a subjective thing. For every person who loves Monet, another loves Picasso. Some people have edgy prints hanging in their home, others have out-of-proportion dolphins and frangipanis. Some people don’t like art at all and instead have 256 photos of their family members (dressed in white, staring whimsically at rock formations) hanging on their walls. Each to their own. I must admit, I’m not big on the graffiti murals, but they are certainly better than tags or some offensive scrawl that manages to combine sweet Millie from down the road with acts that would make Dr Dre blush. The one positive is that these people are trying to express themselves through the written from (though they really should learn how to spell). I love your creeping vine idea. Absolutely love it. What a shame the local council isn’t big on green space. Instead, they seem to favour glowing white multi-storey developments that will only encourage our talented local artists to spread their incoherent messages in every nook and cranny of this coastal getaway. MEDOWIE Netball has just completed a ten week Net Set Go ‘Net’ program aimed at the 4-7 years age group, held on Wednesday afternoons at the Medowie Netball Courts. This year the program was run by Zara Risby. Zara’s innovative games and netball teaching skills kept all 17 participants enrolled in this years program coming back every week. Medowie Netball was thankful to Zara for her commitment in running this years program/ Many in this years ‘Net’ program will progress and play next season in the next tier ‘Set’ playing a game on a Saturday morning with some modified rules.
