WHEN Tania Bunk and her two sons moved to Medowie, it was supposed to be the beginning of a happier chapter in their lives.

Instead, their dream and plans for their new idyllic home have begun to unravel.

Tania, a single mother, achieved her dream of purchasing her dream property in Medowie recently.

She fell in love with the property on her first viewing, which has bush at the back door.

Before going through with the purchase, Ms. Bunk said she had tried to make sure that the bush behind her future home was in fact a designated wildlife corridor and not under threat from any development.

“Before purchasing the property, I visited council and spoke to a Development Planner,” Ms Bunk told News Of The Area. “They (Council)

assured me that the area behind our property was a wildlife corridor it was unlikely that anything would be built there due to the area being recognised as such.”

However, merely weeks after moving in, Ms Bunk received a Development Application for a 50 lot Torrens title development to be built behind her new home.

“Upon receiving the DA I felt sick and my heart dropped to my stomach, I felt deceived and could not fathom that despite my efforts to make sure nothing like this was on the cards, that no one made me aware of this only weeks prior,” Ms

“Neighbours have since confirmed they were aware there would be residential development in the area, but the current proposed development was not indicated.”

The opportunity to submit opposition letters to Council closed on 13 December 2017, and the matter has not be heard

by Council yet, but signs have already been erected on the site advertising expressions of interest for the new lifestyle properties of houses, duplexes and townhouses.

Ms Bunk has contacted all Port Stephens Councillors to discuss the

matter, and a meeting has been called at her home mid-January to assess the situation and to allow councillors to hear her thoughts.

C o u n c i l l o r Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, “I’ve organised a site meeting in mid January so that all Councillors - myself included - are able to get a better understanding of any issues at this site.”

SHADOW Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington MP has joined with local police officers to call on drivers to commit to safer driving as their 2018 resolution.

NSW’s holiday road toll has nearly doubled in 2017 and annual road fatalities have risen for the second year in a row.

Locally, police officers from the Port Stephens Command and Highway Command have conducted almost 5,000 Random Breath Tests (RBTs) across the holiday period.

Port Stephens has been fortunate to avoid any fatalities during this holiday period.

A breakdown of figures by council area show that Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens record the highest number of road fatalities. The most recent figures from 2016 recorded ten fatalities in both Newcastle, and Port Stephens, with 9 in Lake Macquarie.

Across the state, 250,000 speeding fines were issued in 2017, equating to more than 680 speeding infringements each and every day.

rates from the approved 201,000 tonnes per annum to a maximum of 400,000 tonnes per annum and to increase the operating hours from the approved 7:00am to 5:00pm to 6:00am to 6:00pm, from the Salt Ash Sand Project, located on Janet Parade, in Salt Ash. The exhibition period for comment closes on 15 January, and there are concerns that the community has remained largely unaware of the impact on traffic if approved.

Nigel Waters of the Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association (TRRA) told News Of The Area, “Residents interested in commenting on the proposed increase in service have until 15 January.”

He believes that there are many issues to be considered including the timing of the community consultation being conducted over the

Christmas, New Year Holiday break.

The widening of Nelson Bay Road to a dual carriageway in both directions is not something that local residents are anticipating any time soon, however increased traffic will cause more problems for many locals who commute to Williamtown and Newcastle daily for work.

With Nelson Bay Road currently classified a category service E, it does not have the capacity to deal with the traffic that this increase in production would create.

The road would need to have a capacity of 12,000 plus vehicles per day and allow for four or more travel lanes falling under category 6R. “The TRRA has made a submission to NSW Department of Planning and Environment in which it questions the need for the increase in production and asks, ‘If this mine is only extracting at 35% capacity then we also question at what capacity the other mining sites in the area are operating’.”

“TRRA believes that the overall balance of supply of and demand for sand needs to be considered with an independent estimate of the demand for the Sydney market in particular.”

Shrill Sounds of Summer

WITH the cicada season in full swing, the familiar sound of the summer symphony is echoing around the region once again.

And if you think the little noise makers are much louder than usual this year you are not alone, with experts deeming the bumper season the largest since 2013.

Seven-year-old Zackery Moran said the unrelenting wave of singing in the local area is deafening.

“The chirping starts before the sun comes up and goes most of the day and into the night,” he said.

“It’s so loud sometimes that it hurts my ears.”

News Of The Area recently recorded the insects humming at sound levels well over 100 decibels at homes near Bulahdelah’s Alum Mountain.

According to cicada enthusiast Dr Nathan Emery, who is a Scientific Officer at the Australian Botanic Gardens, this level is equivalent to the sound of a chainsaw running at full speed or a rock concert.

“The males often sing in synchrony, termed a cicada

chorus and this can get up to around 120 decibels,” he said.

“With prolonged exposure, this is enough to damage human hearing.”

Dr Emery said the most commonly found species in the Myall Coast and Port Stephens region include the Eastern Double Drummer, Black Prince, Red Treeticker, Cherrynose and Yellowbelly, which have all come out in large numbers this season.

“The ones making the loudest noise are the Eastern Double Drummers, which are also Australia’s largest cicada species,” he said.

But for anyone hoping the piercing shrill of the insect’s mating song will soon end, Dr Emery told News Of The Area the final chorus of the season is still some time away.

“Some of the larger species, such as the Green Grocer and Eastern Double Drummer will start to decline in numbers throughout January,” he said.

“However, others like the Black Prince and Floury Baker may persist up to March or April.”

MEDOWIE has a number of playgroups available to families, all commencing soon for the 2018 year, and you are encouraged to go along and try one or more out.

Playgroups are an important part of the development of young children, and a valuable social interaction outlet for parents.

Playgroups allow parents to introduce their children to a range of activities they may not do at home.

It’s also a safe way for parents to allow their children to engage socially with other people and try new things.

Parents can broaden their social network, meeting other parents with children in the same age group.

Medowie Mother Jane Thomas told News Of The Area, “I moved to Medowie, transferred here with my

husband’s employment, and didn’t know anyone.”

“Attending playgroups with my sons helped me to get to know other mums, make some friends, and give them some time with other children.”

There are a number of playgroups you can try in 2018.

On Tuesday mornings, Medowie’s oldest and longest running playgroup is run at the community hall.

Medowie Tigers Playgroup started over thirty years ago, and has been running almost continuously since then.

The first two visits are free, and then a small weekly fee is payable to continue on.

You can find them on Facebook under ‘Medowie Tigers Playgroup’.

One Wednesdays the place to be is ‘Mainly music’, run frm 10-11:30am.

The cost is $5 per family, and the church provides morning tea for all.

LONG time advocate for ‘better police service’ Doreen Bradley OAM is full of praise for Senior Constable Luke Rogers from Lemon Tree Passage.

“I’m getting amazing feedback from residents about this officer’s dedication and continuing commitment to his job,” she said.

“He follows up his initial call-outs and always lends a sympathetic ear to victims of crime,” she added. “He even consoles those charged with offences and tries to steer them down the road to recovery.”

“Senior police really do need to encourage localism in their forward planning.” “It’s the secret to efficient crime management in isolated communities.”

Ms Bradley sees trouble ahead if the proposed amalgamation of Port Stephens LAC with other commands goes ahead.

“This ‘re-engineering’

The fact that it is a supported playgroup means that the coordinator has a background in early childhood and runs the playgroup with organised activities and supplies morning tea.

Anyone may join the group, held every week during school terms in the Medowie Public School hall.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring their children along to any of these fantastic groups, and broaden your social network.

Mrs CV, as I am typing this, I’m polishing off the last of the hazelnut nougat I was given for Christmas, even though I promised myself I would stick to salads and green smoothies for the next six months in order to make up for the communal gluttony that occurred at my place over the festive season.

It is now all a blur of deep-fried camembert, basil and pistachio dip, potato salad with full cream mayonnaise, chocolate mousse, rum balls, red wine, white wine, brunch, lunch and midnight snacks (and that was just Boxing Day).

We all fall into a trap at this time of year, and that trap is thinking that we will pace ourselves over the Christmas period, eat in moderation, exercise, and start the New Year as svelte, radiant, well-rested individuals.

Instead we fall into a food coma and we can’t exercise because even our stretchy activewear isn’t quite that stretchy and we all know that crop tops and muffin tops aren’t a fashion statement any of us would like to emulate.

The most exercise we have done is to float around on blow-up peacocks and pull a couple of Bon Bons.

Heck, even if I could see my shoelaces, I doubt I’d have the energy to actually tie them up. All this eating and nanna napping is exhausting.

Acceptance is the first step, Mrs CV. There’s no point feeling bad about it.

You simply have to let go of the past and embrace the future.

It seems pointless to change things mid-week, so as of next Monday, I want you to ask yourself this question each time you come across a tempting treat: “Should I put this inside me?” Nine times out of ten, the answer will be no. In fact, the question could extend beyond food and keep you away from doomed relationships and emergency rooms. Food for thought.

Tanilba’s week of fun

FOR four years, the first week in January at Tanilba Bay has been a fun-filled action packed week for families, hosted by the Scripture Union Family Mission at Tanilba Bay Public School.

The Scripture Union (SU) has been in existence for 150 years and among its many functions, runs ‘Family Missions’ all across NSW. Andy Miller, one of the SUFM Tanilba Bay Directors, told News Of The Area, “Our volunteers from Sydney and the Central Coast give up their

summer break to serve the community on the peninsula to the best of our ability, and it has been our honour to share this beautiful part of the world with the great people who live here.”

Over the course of the week, the entire family is taken care of and catered for.

Children are immersed in a music drama, put on by a talented team.

They play games, do craft and are taught from the Bible in fun and relevant ways.

Adults are catered for with ridiculously good coffee, made by a trained barista, incredible craft activities and the chance to have a meaningful conversation in the cafe.

Mornings are always held at the primary school, but then in the afternoons the team meet up with families again and get amongst the community at Tanilba Park,

“It was a great effort. I had some fantastic support from people in Port Stephens, including the Mayor and General Manager.”

In undertaking a climb like the one to Everest there are physical and mental challenges to overcome; for Stephen, there were also life lessons learned.

“Life is much more beautiful without email, phones and social media.

“Our ability to live in the moment was so much more enhanced in an environment without those distractions,” he said.

When asked if he would encourage others to undertake physical challenges like his Everest climb the answer was a definitive “YES.”

The whole program is provided to the community free of charge.

The program has finished up a fantastic fourth year this week, and the team at SUFM are already talking excitedly about next year’s program.

Andy Miller said, “It has been our privilege to be here this summer and we look forward to bringing more of it, bigger and better in December 2018, ready for the first week of January 2019.”

The Foundation raises much needed funds to promote research, heighten awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families within the community.

“To participate in the climb was a very easy decision!

“I’m close friends with Mark Hughes and I couldn’t say no to the idea of raising some money for his fantastic Foundation, whilst travelling through the Himalayas with a great bunch of mates.”

Stephen and his team raised almost $500,000 for the Mark Hughes Foundation.

THE Annual Bob Royal whiting fishing competition has been expanded this year to include flathead as the targeted species for those entering the adult section.

Now in its fourth year, the event was named after the late Bob Royal,a tireless community worker.

The initiative will reduce the barriers to participation and help change the physical activity behaviours of children and young people in NSW. The voucher can be

Active Kids Voucher

By Rachael VAUGHAN JANUARY 2018 has brought about the official opening of the Active Kids Voucher program for New South Wales school students.

The voucher is available to all school aged students in New South Wales, and is not means tested.

Families will multiple children are not restricted with one voucher per family, they may apply for each and every student enrolled in school.

The Active Kids rebate will be available from the NSW Government via a voucher system to all schoolaged children who enrol in, or register for sport and fitness activities to cover participation costs.

This program will be run annually for the next four years.

A large variety of sports clubs and activity groups across Raymond Terrace, Medowie and Tilligerry have already registered for the voucher program, preparing for the release.

They include, but are not limited to Terrace Roosters,

Medowie Netball Club, Dance n Dazzle Studio, Port Stephens Power AFL Club, Medowie Girl Guides, MCPD Dance and Cheer and Crossfit Deck.

Kimberly Cox, owner and operator of Crossfit Deck in Raymond Terrace, told News Of The Area, “We registered back in September with the hopes of having most of the CrossFit boxes (gyms) around being recognised for the positive influence our strong communities can have on our local families.”

“With most of our CrossFit Kids already watching Mum or Dad be the best versions of themselves by choosing to be healthier in fitness and food choices for life, the children learn to have the same focus and also the same love of fitness being fun, rewarding and engaging.”
