THIS year’s Remembrance

Day service at Medowie, hosted by Medowie RSL Sub Branch, was well attended,

with attendees partaking in a very moving service.

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute’s silence is observed and dedicated to those

soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation.

Wreaths were laid by Medowie Christian School, Medowie Public School, Kate Washington, the RSL Ladies

Auxiliary, Medowie Lions and Medowie & Tilligerry News Of The Area.

This year’s service reflected upon the sacrifice of our serving men and women,

and what that means to a community like Medowie that are so supportive of our armed forces.

first world war, a soldier Major McCrae vented his anguish at the death of a close friend by composing a poem.

He wrote it in pencil on a page from his despatch book, a now iconic poem that has come to be known as ‘Flanders’ Field’.

Now worn on Remembrance Day each year, the red poppies were one of the first plants and flowers to come back

after Flanders’ field and many other battlefields were devastated.

It is hoped that continual coverage of the wonderful work of Medowie Sub Branch RSL and the Women’s auxiliary will result in an increase in crowd and attendance numbers to commemorate these very special days.

“A call to our local station would be flickpassed onto Maitland and we ‘prioritised.’

“This meant that a day or two later officers would respond,” Ms Bradley said.

“Crime flourished and it was only when we were able to get Port Stephens Command hived off that things improved.”

Mayor takes the Tour

THE old ‘squashies’ in Medowie is almost unrecognisable, with the newly renovated building adding new facilities steadily on its community focused ‘grand final plan’.

The Centre was delighted to have recently elected Mayor Ryan Palmer and Councillor Sarah Smith visit the Medowie Sports and Business Centre this week.

They were very surprised at the extent of the facility and what seemed endless types of uses it has for individuals, families and businesses in Medowie, Port Stephens and the surrounding region.

Both Mayor Palmer and Cr Smith expressed their excitement for future stages of the property development and their desire to make use of it themselves in the near future.

The centre houses Plus Fitness, Sportz Café, Medowie Family & Sports Physio, Lynch Bowen, Munchkins Creche, Medowie Gymnastics, Debbie Rae Dance, Pollets Martial Arts, Mobile Marketing, Inner Origin, Mark Leary Dietician and Communication Therapy,

Wildlife babies meet Hi Tech

new machine to arrive, as the import was held up in a foreign port, where it became infested with a nasty bug that needed a lengthy quarantine in Australia.”

“Thankfully ‘Pets r Us’ at Raymond Terrace was there to save the group’s sanity and still had the energy left to put the machine together when it finally was given to us.”

Within minutes of its arrival at WINC, it was occupied by two tiny Redneck Wallabies, who weighed in at 150 & 250 grams.

They are fed wildlife baby formula every three hours, day and night, through a fine syringe.

As they grow they’ll be moved into hanging pouches, and gradually into

the real world of sunshine and grass where they can test their fragile wobbly legs and test eating solid food.

When they’re ready for more adventures they’ll be transferred to a large compound on one of WINC’s pre-release sites, where they’ll socialise with other members of their species and be fed regularly until they decide they’re ready to explore the surrounding bush.

They’re welcome to come back at any time if food is scarce but, just like humans, they often come back to proudly show off their own babies.

Lorraine said, “It’s rewarding being a wildlife rescuer and carer, but the sad part is how many of our native animals are being

orphaned by cars.”

“You can do your part by encouraging everyone you know to drive slower between dusk and dawn, when wildlife is searching for those tasty morsels that grow by roads.”

“Food is particularly scarce right now because of the long period of dry weather, so it’s a time for special care.”

“The life you save could be your own,” she said.

Duffy The Sea Turtle

SHOAL Bay locals, Ellie Jackson (Author) and Liz Oldmeadow (Illustrator) have something to be proud of with the release of their charitable book, ‘Duffy’s Lucky Escape’.

Ellie is an ex-Geography teacher and Environmental Sciences graduate whereas Liz is a multi-award winning Illustrator and Photographer as well as a graduate in Natural History Illustration.

The idea was born

when Ellie and her family moved to Magnetic Island in Queensland for a year when her children were small.

Whilst living in this idyllic location, they took part in a turtle release which was the springboard for the book.

A trip to the Turtle Hospital on the mainland educated them about why turtles are in need of our help, with one of the main reasons being their consumption of too much plastic.

When you put a group of people with the same genetic flaws in a confined space for seven hours and then you add alcoholic punch, estranged Uncle Phil, a Secret Santa where the maximum outlay is $50, Mariah Carey singing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ and an undercooked turkey, you have a recipe for disaster.

Add a faulty remote-control car, a drone that gets stuck in the jacaranda tree, bon bons that contain hazardous choking items, surly teenagers, a friendly game of table tennis that turns hostile, and granny falling into the pool after one too many shandies. How can you relax?

How about we throw in a dog that urinates on the Christmas tree (and all the presents underneath), a dishwasher that groans under the pressure and dies, great grandad Maurice (who also groans under the pressure and dies), a maxed-out credit card and more landfill than anyone knows what to do with.

I know a family who has this whole Christmas caper worked out.

They put out an open invitation telling everyone they will be at the beach. If anyone want to come along, they simply need to turn up with their own chairs, their own grog, and a plate to share. Presents are banned. They sit around under a shady tree with zero stress, zero cost apart from the usual costs associated with a picnic, and, once lunch is over and the chicken bones are in the bin, they just loll around on inflatable toys.

Pink Community Day

By Rachael VAUGHAN RECENTLY Medowie was a sea of pink for the annual Pink October Community Fundraiser Fun Day. Local business were behind the the event, including Century 21, Imugi TaeKwondo, Thermazing by Amy and Woolworths.

The Medowie community turned out in fine force to support the cause, with every dollar raised on the day, and in the lead up, donated to the Cancer Council of Australia.

Prior to the day, tickets were sold for the Pink October Raffle, with the first prize being a Thermomix.

For a gold coin donation, attendees were able to

purchase a sausage sizzle, bubble wands, fairy floss and face painting.

Kelly O’Brien from Imugi TaeKwondo told News Of The Area, “The community were loads of fun to demonstrate in front of. I also really enjoyed seeing them get involved and have a go on the mats.”

Care for Tolley

By Marian SAMPSON WITH habitat destruction, vehicle strikes and dog attacks to deal with, life can be hard for Port Stephens koalas, however, the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary could be one of the factors that has things looking up for the Ports favourite furry friends.

Four rehabilitation pens have been opened at the

facility, allowing for koalas to move from home care regimes into a purpose built care facility.

Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “I would like to extend a big thank you to all the dedicated and committed volunteers that have made opening this stage of the facility possible.”

Ms Washington believes that Port Stephens koalas are about to be listed as an

endangered species.

“It is the responsibility of the community to do all that we can to save Port Stephens koalas,” she said.

The Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary was made possible through a $124,000 grant from the State Government Community Building Partnership which was supported by Kate Washington.

Ms West said, “I have completed four novels and have 10 more in the pieline.”

“I did all the format of ‘Marrying Alan Morgan’ myself which includes my

website and cover design,” she said.

“Lena West is my pen name and the book series is known as ‘Love in Oxley Crossing,’ she added.

RURAL Romance ( Ru-Roms), those ‘Lust in the Dust’ novels that are very popular these days has a new writer in the form of Helen (Lena) West from Tanilba Bay. The former teacher and member of Romance Writers Australia has just completed a self publishing course in Canberra.

Ms West’s first novel, ‘Marrying Alan Morgan’ is ready to roll.

“I came from a small rural town in Queensland and after retiring, travelled most of Australia for some eight years with my husband,” she said.

“On top of this we lived in western NSW for several years.” These experiences gave me inspiration for my books.”

Manager Wayne Wallis said, “It is our job to work together with the community, to ensure the viability of Port Stephens koalas for many generations to come.”

Mr Wallis believes the facility when fully funded and developed has the potential not only to protect Port Stephens koalas but to create an international tourism drawcard for the region.

“What is here now is only the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

Tolley is just one example of the koalas, who will stay at the sanctuary which is based within Treescapes at One Mile Beach which is situated on Crown Land.

At 8-10 years old Tolley has been coming into the care of Port Stephens Koalas every summer since 2011, he lived in Mambo Wanda Wetlands and was usually found in distress and dehydrated on the cycleway.

Tolley has been in care since last summer and was diagnosed through blood tests sent to Sydney University as having a fungal infection, he has also suffered a bout of Chlamydia this year.

After a prolonged stay at the Port Macquarie Koala hospital, Tolley has only just come back to Port Stephens and is now in his forever home, at the Port Stephens
