MEDOWIE author, Mrs Yvonne Fletcher and retired Williamtown RAAF member, Mr John Gillam launched their latest book, ‘You Can’t Fight, You’re A Girl’.

Approximately seventy people attended the book launch, including Ms Meryl Swanson MP, Member for Paterson; Ms Liesl Tesch MP, Member for Gosford, and Ms Eve Eather, Kurri Kurri Public School Principal.

From stowaway to nurse, the story of Miss Maud Butler is one of imagination and determination.

Disguised as a male soldier, Maud was twice caught and arrested for impersonating an Australian soldier.

Humans of the Area: Dr Jafrin Mannan

THIS week’s Human Of The Area is Dr. Jafrin Mannan.

Dr Mannan comes to Medowie with a wealth of experiences and knowledge to share with our community.

Dr Mannan was born in Bangladesh.

Dr Mannan’s mother was a headmistress in the Bangladesh schools system, but sadly passed away when she was only sixteen.

Her father is a wellrespected doctor, who founded a private 75 bed private hospital in Bangladesh.

There seemed to be no other logical choice for Dr Mannan, than to join the field that was

such an influential part of her upbringing.

She studied at University of Rajshahi in Bangladesh and came second in her class, earning her graduation.

There she met her husband, Saminul Haque, one of her classmates in the medical program.

Dr. Mannan worked in her father’s hospital for a number of years, as well as lecturing in a private medical colleges in Bangladesh.

She could have stayed on, but had dreams of continuing her medical studies.

Dr Mannan moved to Australia in 2002 joining her sister where she had to retake her medical exams to qualify to practice here.

In 2003 she completed her Masters in Public Health through Sydney University, and in 2005 she finished the

AMC (Australian Medical Council) exam in one go.

She completed her internship at John Hunter Hospital and recalls the day she called her father back home.

“I rang him up after completing my Australian Medical registration , and internship, after having already done them in Bangladesh, and said ‘hey, Dad, so, I am a doctor…. again!”

Dr Mannan worked at both Concord and Auburn hospitals in Sydney for a few years and joined General practice in 2010.

She worked for six years in Sydney South in a very busy practice.

In 2016, Dr Mannan and her husband decided it was time for a change, and they moved to Newcastle to settle

as she preferred a quieter lifestyle.

For months, she travelled back and forth until her long list of patients had all been transitioned comfortably to new Doctors.

She still works at Penrith skin cancer clinic once a fortnight in Sydney, as a casual lecturer at Newcastle University Medical School and she is an Examiner for the RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners).

She is the new owner of the Medowie Family Clinic, and is looking forward to building a strong relationship and continuity of care with Medowie locals She is currently seeing patients three days a week, with the aim to cross over to full time next year.

In addition to her usual practice she has special interest in Children’s health, Skin Cancer and Mental health.

We welcome Dr Jafrin Mannan to Medowie.

Literature Awards Finalists

By Geoff WALKER AFTER exhaustive deliberation, the preliminary judges have come up with the top 21 finalists for this year’s Port Stephens Literature Awards.

Some nine judges read the entries and then have a round table discussion (sometimes rather heated) about the ones which impressed them.

A short list of 20 is then chosen.

This year they selected 21 as it was just too hard to reject one of them.

These short stories are

now in the hands of the three finalists’ judges who independently rate them from one to 21. The points are then added up to decide the winners which will be announced at our quilt show at Club Lemon Tree later in November.

All major prize winners will notified beforehand and invited along to personally receive their awards. The others will have them forwarded by mail.

The short listed stories (in random order) are: ‘Mabel;’ ‘A Colour of Loss;’ ‘Send Me Home My Friends;’ The Hospital Visitor’; ‘The

Seat’; ‘Good Business’; ‘A Story to Tell’; ‘Friendship Roller Coaster’; ‘A Fathering Will Do’; ‘An Asterisk’; ‘Time’s Slipping Away’; ‘Night of the Big Fright’; ‘No Place for a Lady’; ‘The Bride Price’; ‘A Child Names Warrior;’ ‘The Meal Ticket’; ‘Nine Nines are Ninety Nine’; ‘Too Late to Leave’; ‘Pilgrimage’;’Chocolate Milk’ and ‘Rob’.

PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC today helped launch the new defence, security, and aerospace hub at Williamtown which has been developed by the University of Newcastle with support of the NSW Government.

Mr. MacDonald said the hub, named ‘DSA-18’, will support research and development of new innovative technologies to bolster the region’s industries.

“The Hunter is already a NSW stronghold for defence but today’s launch of this impressive new facility will see that take off even further,” Mr. MacDonald said.

“The DSA-18 Hub has been developed by the University of Newcastle with funding support from the NSW Government’s Boosting Business Innovation Program.

“The Boost program is providing $18 million to the state’s universities – including $1.5 million to the University of Newcastle – to work with businesses to drive

“The University of Newcastle is conducting exciting research in a range of areas relevant to the defence, security, and aerospace sectors and the DSA-18 Hub with its 18 seats will allow academics to work directly with business and industry.

“The Hub’s strategic location at Williamtown Aerospace Centre will allow it to work alongside leading industry names like Raytheon Australia, Lockheed Martin Australia, and Boeing as well as cutting-edge smaller businesses and start-ups.

“The Hunter region’s defence sector employs more than 4,600 people and contributes $1.3 billion to the region’s economy but the DSA-18 hub will provide new impetus for innovation-led growth.”

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said the DSA-18 Hub would provide an important platform to build on UON’s strong research performance and global reputation in defence,

security and aerospace.

“Around the world we have seen that the best innovation ecosystems are those where new industries, jobs and opportunities are created when research, business, government and community forge strong alliances,” Professor McMillen said.

“With UON’s expertise in interdisciplinary fields such as visual simulation, robotics, biometrics, cognition modelling, frontier energy technologies, navigation systems, disaster preparedness and recovery, cybersecurity and advanced sensor platforms, the DSA-18 Hub will provide a capability boost to the growing cluster of businesses and defence-related activities at Williamtown.”

Remembrance Day A COMMUNITY REMINDER

By Rachael VAUGHAN A GENTLE gentle reminder that Remembrance Day is coming up this Saturday 11 November.

Originally called Armistice Day, Remembrance Day commemorates the day the guns fell silent and the Great War, known today as World War I, came to an end.

The end of hostilities was official with the signing of the armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Unfortunately, the “war to end all wars” did not end global conflict with World War II commencing only two decades later.

After the end of World War II in 1945, the Australian and British governments decided to change the name from Armistice Day to Remembrance Day as they felt it was a more appropriate day to commemorate all of those who had died during times of war.

It is tradition, that on this day, a one minute’s silence be observed at 11am in memory of those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all

wars and armed conflicts.

Remembrance Day is also observed by the wearing of red poppies on shirts, jackets and other articles of clothing.

Neil Biggar, Hon. Secretary of Medowie RSL sub-Branch, told News Of The Area, “We warmly welcome all who would like to join us on this very important day.”

The Medowie service will be held on Saturday 11 November, to commence at 10.30am at the Medowie Lions Memorial Park, located at the intersection of Medowie Road and Ferodale Road in Medowie.

What is the arrangement for bill-splitting?

Whenever we go out as a group, there’s always someone who orders up big and then we pay for it. What is the delicate way to arrange this?

This is a fraught situation, Miss JV. People fall into all sorts of categories when it comes to dining out.

We all know the hand-sitters. When the time comes to pay, these types literally sit on their hand, perhaps concerned that their appendage will take on a mind of its own and try to offer some money towards the meal.

One step up from the hand-sitters, are the wallet openers. They open and close their wallets as though this equates to getting out some cold, hard cash, but they pause long enough for someone else to say, “Hey, I’ve got this.”

Then we have the faulty-carders. They flash around their credit card, and then realise it has expired. “I’ll get it next time,” they offer, as you go to the teller to withdraw more money and wonder why you didn’t stay home and watch Netflix.

How about the couples who order delicacies for their child? Yep, because we all know how much kids love deep-fried coconut prawns. The little treasure will just push around their rice, add a bit of slobber, make the meal inedible, and then you’ll end up paying for it.

But wait, there’s more. We can’t forget the couples who forget to bring any wine, but are incredibly grateful that you are happy to share the $80 bottle of plonk you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

And hey, since you’ve only managed one glass (they are fast drinkers) you may as well be the designated driver.

It’s a win-win!

Finally, who can forget the hair-finder. Yep, this person will happily devour their entire meal, but on the last piece of lettuce, they’ll find a hair, probably their own, and then make a scene in front of the poor wait staff who earn $8 an hour for the privilege of serving people tighter than a fish’s . . . let’s just go with a fish’s mouth.

So there you have it.

To avoid these scenarios, I would suggest avoiding people at all costs, but if you must dine out, go to one of those places where you place your order at the counter.

Arrive early and never, under any circumstances, be the last one standing.

Sometimes you have to beat people at their own miserable game.

Halloween friendly houses

HALLOWEEN wasn’t such a scary proposition for too many Medowie families this year thanks to the help of a community initiative.

News Of The Area joined forces with Medowie Neighbourhood Watch and Sportz Café to help create a friendly network of homes who would be participating

in the trick or treat activities.

The idea was simple in that an orange balloon was to be inflated and attached to the mailbox of any house that was happy to participate in the Halloween festivities.

These balloons were available in a packet provided

by News Of The Area, Medowie Neighbourhood Watch and Sportz Café and able to be collected from

Medowie boys to play on Rugby representative team in Italy FROM Page 12

swimming, athletics and cross country at zone carnivals and even a few at State level.

Their main passion is with Rugby Union, and their dedication to their chosen sport has paid off.

As a result of all their hard work, the boys gained selection at Regional Representative level.

Jordan was selected to play with the Hunter Wildfires in 2016 & 2017 and Chris was selected to play with the Mid North Coast Axemen in 2017.

When NSW Country Junior Rugby Union announced they were planning a Development tour

to Italy in April 2018 for 15 & 16 year olds Jordan and Chris jumped at the opportunity and were successful in their applications.

The tour is being lead by three NSW Country Junior Rugby Union Development Coaches who are currently working on a NSW Country Skills Development initiative that will be implemented in 2018 with all Country Representative sides.

The tour will include training with NSW Country Coaches, and local Italian rugby clubs, playing 4 games against local Italian rugby clubs and the opportunity to watch a few Italian professional rugby matches with some sightseeing along the way.

Jordan Eade told News Of The Area, “It’s absolutely amazing to have the opportunity to travel to a different country to play a sport I love, and to do it with

Lock boxes for hire

PORT Stephens Council has been awarded $5300 from the NSW Government as part of their statewide Safer Community Compact grant program designed to help councils to deliver grassroot solutions to crime.

Portable lock boxes have officially been introduced in popular holiday locations in the Port Stephens Council area including Nelson Bay, Anna bay and Raymond Terrace.

The lock boxes can be hired out at Port Stephens Council chambers in Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay Visitors Centre and all council owned holiday parks.

Last year in the Port Stephens area, there were 415 reported steal from motor vehicle incidents, 248 steal from dwelling offences and 15 steal from person crimes.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said, “This project is designed to help car owners and tourists to take steps to reduce the risk of their belongings being stolen.”

“Beach goers will be able to store their keys in the secure boxes so they

can enjoy a worry-free swim.”

Port Stephens Local Area Command is backing the scheme, taking charge of the project with Council staff, and personally delivering all the new lock boxes to their new homes, ready for hire.

Crime Prevention Officer Alison Stewart told News of the Area, “Lock boxes are a great initiative to help reduce the instance of theft in the Port Stephens area.”

Wayne Wallis, Port Stephens Council General Manager said, “I want every person in Port Stephens to

feel safe in our community and that their families and property are protected.”

I am incredibly grateful for this funding which will support Council’s efforts to empower the community to understand the precautions they can take to safeguard against theft,” he said.

Council also will run a community awareness campaign for residents and tourists in the Port Stephens area to ensure they know what they can do to protect themselves from being robbed.

Women’s Day Scholarship PORT Stephens Council's International Women's Day scholarship program is now open, with three $1,000 scholarships up for grabs to help women achieve their goals.

The scholarship program is designed to support local women and the valuable contribution they make to our community across a range of fields, including arts, culture, environment, business, community, health and sport.

All women aged 16 years and over, who have an important goal they would like to achieve, are encouraged to apply for one of the 2018 scholarships.
