With a combined total of over 150 years of service to the community through the Botanic Garden, the dedicated volunteers were awarded life memberships by the Friends of the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden Committee in acknowledgement of their service.

Graham Tupper, President of the Friends of the Garden said, “The long-term dedication of the garden volunteers is just inspiring.”

Some of the volunteers awarded life membership, including sisters Celma and Lyn Coupe, and Sue Di Donna, were involved in cleaning up, restoring and planting out the former waste dump site in the early days over 40 years ago, before the garden opened in 1988.

This helped to transform the site into the beautiful garden we enjoy today.

of other volunteer services including fundraising to build garden facilities, growing plants, helping at the café and greeting visitors at the information centre and shop.

Another life member awardee, Eve Colley, played a key role in communicating the development of the garden in a booklet called ‘The Greenest Bend in the River’, and informing the community about the garden through newsletters and publications.

Eve also served on the governing committee for many years and continues to contribute by tending to the garden’s significant orchid collection which visitors can enjoy in the new Glasshouse.

To help keep the garden beds in good order one of the garden’s maintenance team volunteers, Stuart Hile, was recognised for his 25 years of continuous and dedicated service.

Barry Butler and Jodie Williams join the one remaining member of the team, Leeharne Hawley, after completing their Cert II, including 120 voluntary hours with Coffs Harbour Paramedics and many hours of classroom and online learning, in this newly formatted Community First Responder program for New South Wales Ambulance.

Ian Hanson is currently studying for his Cert II and looks forward to becoming the fourth team member in March 2024.

Jodie, a retired Registered Nurse, has always had a real interest in emergency care.

She told News Of The Area that the new members

all joined for similar reasons.

“It is to give back to the community with an interest in health,” she said.

“Now my boys are growing up and hubby is retired, I have the time to put something back into the community, doing something I love, helping people in their time of need.

“I have always volunteered in some capacity, (with the) SES, CWA, RDA and now this.

“The study was very involved, but I enjoyed the clinical components and the challenge of learning new skills.

“It is very empowering to learn such lifesaving skills and re-awakening my nursing brain, especially after so many years of being a stay-at-home Mum. “I love knowing that I have the skills and knowledge to save a life and hopefully can make a difference to a patient's, their family, friends, and wider communities' futures,” she said.

Woman dies after caught in rip A WOMAN has died and a child has been rescued after both were caught in a rip at Coffs Harbour.

About 5.20pm on Tuesday 2 January, emergency services were called to Park Beach at Coffs Harbour and were told the woman had been swimming with a young family member when they were swept out to sea.

The child was brought safely to shore, but the woman was found unresponsive in

She was brought to the beach and CPR initiated; however, the 50-year-old woman was unable to be revived.

Officers attached to Coffs/Clarence Police District established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police will prepare a report regarding the woman’s death for the information of the Coroner.

All four team members enjoy the training, and ability to help the community in people's time of need.

The CERT car 6013 covers the villages of Nana Glen, Coramba, Upper Orara, Karangi and surrounding areas.

Members of the team are first on the scene of an emergency in their region to provide medical attention and communicate with the ambulance service in Coffs what resources are needed.

The CERT vehicle has sophisticated communication

and mapping features, and with the latest clinical equipment it means the team can deliver a level of clinical care that complements what the paramedics do when they arrive on the scene.

The group meets once a month to continue their training under the guidance of a qualified paramedic and have the support of the paramedics from Woolgoolga, Coffs Harbour and Sawtell Stations.

Claim in the works for damaged windscreen A CRACK on the windscreen of her car, sustained on her journey home from work at Coffs Harbour Health Campus, is the result of a stone hitting the glass, according to Donna Houghton.

Following the incident, Woolgoolga resident Donna made a claim to the Coffs Harbour Bypass team’s Ferovial Gamuda Joint Venture (FG JV), which was declined.

In a written explanation to Donna, Ferovial Gamuda Joint Venture said, “The project team has carried out an assessment of the damage claim that you sent to us for your vehicle windscreen.

“Unfortunately, based on the information provided to us we will not be accepting this claim as there is not clear evidence that the project caused the damage.”

Donna told News Of The Area she could not believe the response.

“I can't believe that

the Coffs Harbour Bypass Team has declined my $376 windscreen damage claim, regardless of vehicles involved, and proof or no proof,” she said.

“The Coff Harbour Bypass trucks and vehicles can be seen flicking stones up at the Bruxner Park Road turn, you can see stones on the highway left there from the trucks working on the bypass.”

Donna drives through the roadworks “all the time” to get to work at the hospital.

“I’ve seen the CHB trucks dropping stones and flicking stones into other cars.

“When it hit my car, the sound was like a gunshot that nearly gave me a heart attack,” she said.

“The stones on the road from the Coffs Harbour Bypass project are a safety hazard to people and vehicles passing…there is no doubt that these stones caused my windscreen damage.”

Donna is calling for claims caused by these stones to be paid and for safety measures

to be taken.

“The highway should be frequently cleaned of these stones to minimise damage to people and property,” she told NOTA. With her claim to FG JV declined, Donna was advised

by Transport for NSW, which is overseeing the Coffs Harbour Bypass project, to make a claim to them.

A Transport for NSW (TfNSW) spokesperson told NOTA, “Transport for NSW takes the safety of the community very seriously.

“A public liability claim form will need to be completed to assess Ms Houghton’s claim for a damaged windscreen.

“Should Ms Houghton have any further questions, she should contact the Transport for NSW public liability team at public.liability@transport. nsw.gov.au."

Submitting the claim and thirteen photographs to support her case, Donna received an automatic reply saying it will take at least twelve weeks to assess.

“My car rego is due in March; I don't think it will get re-registered with a very large windscreen crack,” she said.

“Why is it so difficult for a hardworking, tax paying, NSW-born local to get a $376 claim approved for a chipped

and cracked windscreen caused by a roadworks stone?

“It really doesn't seem right,” said Donna.

“No-one involved anywhere in this bypass is helping me...I've contacted the Coffs Harbour Bypass team, various State ministers,

the premier, and even the Ombudsman with no joy.

“It's all very Bah Humbug,” she said.

Donna is now sitting tight until the end of January or early February to hear the outcome of the TfNSW claim.

“The Lions Club has supported the hospital for decades, and we are very

grateful for their continued generosity,” the Hospital’s Executive Officer Lisa Slater

said.

"The vaccine fridge houses vital and potentially life saving medications and vaccinations that are important to the care of our community and they must be stored at the correct temperature.

“Our old fridge's age, size and functionality meant it was no longer fit for purpose and was in immediate need of an upgrade.

“The donation of the vaccine and medication fridge, and oxygen concentrators, gives us peace of mind that Bellinger River District Hospital can maintain the excellent care services we provide to patients and the community,” she told News Of The Area.

Jim Forbes from the

Lions Club of Bellingen said the hospital is a muchneeded community facility that the club was happy to support.

“We have a great community that supports us through our street raffles, at the monthly markets and other events where we do catering, like the Bellingen Show,” said Jim. “It’s a good feeling to be able to help the hospital, whose staff help the community.

“They’re a great team of caring people.”

BELLINGER River District Hospital has been gifted important items funded through local organisations working together to make it happen.

Thanks to the generosity of the Bellingen community, steered by the local Lions Club, their local hospital has a new vaccination fridge and will soon have new portable oxygen concentrators.

KEY Employment Coffs Harbour is one of ten projects on the Mid North Coast to receive a grant in the latest round of Newcastle Permanent’s Charitable Foundation (NPCF) funding.

NPCF Executive Officer Carly Bush said the successful projects were selected for the quality outcomes they will deliver to the lives of disadvantaged and marginalised people in NSW regional communities.

“Two popular basketball courts at Key’s Youth Hub in Coffs Harbour will receive a much-needed upgrade to meet safety standards.

“The courts are used by at-risk youth and people with disabilities.

“The upgraded facilities will provide a safe and inclusive space for them to simply have fun as well as engage with vital health, employment and social support services.

"But more than a basketball court, we see an organisation that provides not only a new court facility but a wraparound service encouraging young people to find their potential."

The grant is for $91,531.

“Key sought funding to upgrade two basketball courts which sit adjacent to our youth hub,” Key CEO Jodi Wood told NOTA. “We requested funding for resurfacing of the courts and to replace the broken and, in some instances, missing hoops with

Key is a community organisation that provides services in employment, education and disability support.

They also run a free youth hub and provide social and recreational support to disadvantaged youth within the Coffs Harbour community.

“Recreational activities and youth friendly spaces are limited in Coffs Harbour, particularly for the disadvantaged young people we see,” said Jodi.

“Kids who are displaying anti-social behaviours often feel disconnected from the programs typically designed for youth such as the education system or local sporting communities.

“Whilst many may see just some basketball courts, what we are providing is a welcoming and safe space for youth to not only hang out in a healthy way but to get direct access to counsellors, employment consultants and youth workers.

“By allowing youth to use the basketball courts we have a unique opportunity to engage with them in a less confronting way.”

The overall plan for Key’s site is to upgrade all of the facilities to become the most modern and user-friendly safe space for young people on the North Coast.

“We are beyond grateful to the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation for this generous grant.

“Key is committed to changing lives, and we can’t wait to partner with Newcastle Permanent on this project to make a real difference in our community.”

The work on the courts is scheduled for April 2024.

“We hope to do a grand opening shortly after with a three on three basketball competition for young people.

“Exciting times ahead,” said Jodi.

Community groups gather to lament loss of forests

By Andrew VIVIAN COMMUNITY members from Friends of Newry, Friends of Pine Creek, Friends of Kalang Headwaters and the Forest Ecology Alliance joined with Gumbaynggirr Elders at Newry State Forest on Sunday, December 10 to mourn what they describe as the destruction of Gumbaynggirr forests, while building hope for the future.

Indigenous Elder Uncle Micklo Jarrett welcomed the group to Gumbaynggirr country.

The event included reflections by Jo Armytage from the Friends of Newry group and Uncle Micklo and Uncle Bud Marshall, and rituals led by Reverend Dr Jason John.

The afternoon was organised by the Uniting Church’s Forest Advocacy Ministry as a part of its

‘Koala Chaplaincy’ project, in collaboration with Friends of Newry.

“It’s a blessing to be on this land,” Ms Armytage said.

“There is a pain that goes with defending the forests, but whenever I gather together with others, I feel my faith in humanity restored.

“We can make a difference, working together in love.”

His role is funded by the Quaker-administered Jan de Voogd Peace Fund and the Uniting Church, and the project is building a range of support resources.

“Hearing people's passion and commitment brought to mind the oftenneglected Hebrew dreaming story, where God makes an Adam out of the Adamah, an earthling from the Earth, created for the rest of the garden: to serve and protect it,” he said.

“It’s a privilege to be supported by the Quakers and Uniting Church to support those people who have taken up that call.”

The Koala Chaplaincy project is focussed around the area of the proposed Great Koala National Park and aims to care for forest defenders, support collaboration between groups working to protect the forests, and advocate for the care of forests to reflect the unceded sovereignty of First Nations peoples.

SleepBus dream becoming a reality

COFFS Coast’s SleepBus is on the production line, queued for fit-out and scheduled for delivery in mid-2024.

The SleepBus will give rough sleepers a chance to get a proper night’s rest, knowing that they are safe.

This respite will lead to improved mental health and a greater capacity to plan their next steps.

LifeHouse Care organised a sponsored walk - LifeWalk - in June this year from Gallows Beach to Boambee Bay to raise funds to buy the bus and fit it out with nineteen purpose-built

pods.

Thanks to the generosity of the community, the walk raised more than $120,000, enabling the project to become a reality.

LifeHouse Care leader Nato Hannaford said demand for the SleepBuses from other regions was strong, putting pressure

on the small Victorian firm doing the specialised fitouts.

“We were their last order before they closed off the books,” Mr Hannaford said.

“That’s why it is taking a little bit longer, because they already had a back order of buses to fulfil.

Ballerinas gifted trips to Sydney ballet

TWO hard-working ballet students at Harbour Performing Arts Centre (HPAC) have recently attended performances by the Australian Ballet at the Sydney Opera House.

Young ballerinas, Isla Taylor and Indy Pike, were gifted the trips by Patron Mark Hardy, and chosen by the teachers in recognition of the students’ strong work ethic.

Isla attended The Dream and Marguerite/Armand.

“This was a great opportunity for me to attend the ballet at the Sydney Opera House,” Isla told News Of The Area.

“Seeing the experience of seeing the ballet was nothing short of magical.

Indy Pike attended the ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky.

“Swan Lake is arguably the greatest of all romantic ballets and one of the best works of Tchaikovsky,” Indy

said.

“To Miss Fran and the teachers at HPAC that selected me to attend Swan Lake, thank you.

“The Australian ballet performance, Swan Lake, was a very memorable experience I was fortunate enough to attend.

“The dancers were so amazing and very technical.

“It was a wonderful performance and it really captivated and inspired me to experiment more throughout my classical and ballet dances.

“They were so precise and really cared about what they

were performing.”

Indy said the swans and the white tutus were stunning on stage and took the audience’s breath away.

“The Orchestra really added to the atmosphere and synchronised nicely with the choreography.”

Indy thoroughly enjoyed both the performance and a chance for some sightseeing while in Sydney.

Both girls thanked their mothers for taking them to Sydney and are now excitedly sharing their experiences with friends at HPAC and their family.

Arty exhibition in the Garden

THE local Combined Art and Craft Group is back hosting another school holiday exhibition at the Botanic Gardens.

From Friday 5 January to Friday 12 January 2024, the exhibition opens daily from 9.30am to 3.00pm.

A regular exhibition for many years, the works featured this time are by six local artists who will be present during the weeklong show.

There will be paintings using various mediums by three of the artists - Mary Abbott, Sue Roberts and Ivinnie Brown.

Papercraft art, porcelain painting, stained glass suncatchers and various knitted and crochet items are just a few of the items on display from the other q

Mary Abbott works mainly with acrylics, although she has used other mediums during her painting career such as watercolours and pastels.

She has numerous years of teaching experience and has completed many awardwinning pieces of artwork during this time.

Marion Crear is highly creative and enjoys a range of different projects.

She is very experienced with gelli printing and uses this for her journals, cards, bookmarks and collage work on canvases.

She also loves working with glass and making glass suncatchers and glass on glass mosaics.

Maxine also makes journals using papers she has gelli printed for the covers.

Her love of knitting and crocheting goes back to her early childhood.

All six artists enjoy participating in this exhibition and especially talking about what they do to the many people who call in for a look at the exhibition.

Spreading the power of the written word

By Andrea FERRARI A NEW library for Coffs Harbour, with the opening of Harry Bailey Memorial Library in Yarrila Place, has had the offshoot benefit of bringing more authors to the region, a boon Julie Holgate is keen to support.

“We’ve been able to offer many author talks in the area, including Thomas Mayo and Kerry O’Brien’s discussions surrounding the 2023 referendum,” Julie, the manager at The Book Warehouse Coffs Harbour, told News Of The Area.

In November, author Suzanne Leal presented at the library, also attending Julie’s store to answer readers’ questions surrounding the release of her latest novel, ‘The Watchful Wife’.

“We have already been in discussion regarding future author talks and signings for 2024 with the team at Coffs Harbour Libraries.

“This is an exciting area of expansion for us, as the opening of Yarrila

Place will facilitate future author events, allowing for continued literary growth in the Coffs community, something we are always supportive of.”

To this point, the enthusiastically supported local festival of all things books indicates the community is very much on board with hearing directly from the people who pen for a living.

“We had an extremely successful Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival (BRWF) in June, with acclaimed authors from across Australia promoting their 2023 releases, alongside the many highly regarded writers and personalities who attended, and the readers who love them,” said Julie.

The Coffs Book Warehouse thrives on its relationship with the event as BRWF’s Official Bookseller.

Lodge merger strengthens position for local Freemasons

CONSOLIDATING its position in Mid North Coast Freemasonry, Lodge ‘The Raleigh’ has merged with Lodge Fitzroy to become known as Lodge Fitzroy 241.

This move is seen as a strategic and positive development for both Lodges, promising a stronger, more vibrant Masonic presence in the community.

Celebrating the occasion on November 28, 2023, a gathering of distinguished masons joined an assembly acknowledging this momentous occasion.

Emotions of pride and anticipation were felt as the Junior Warden, in a symbolic gesture, declared a new beginning for the Lodge.

VW Bro Peter Collins, the Worshipful Master of Lodge ‘The Raleigh’, addressed the gathering, reflecting on the Lodge’s rich history, while expressing optimism for its future in partnership with Lodge Fitzroy.

Post-merger the members, their families, visiting dignitaries and a contingent of Masons from Lodge Star of Wauchope

celebrated this new chapter in their history.

The evening was a blend of reflection and excitement, filled with toasts and talk of Lodge Raleigh's storied past and aspirations for the future.

In a reminiscent mood, W Bro Stan Gordon provided a captivating overview of Lodge Raleigh's journey.

Founded over a century ago, the Lodge's origins trace back to the pioneering cedar getters and timber workers of the Bellinger Valley.

“Its rich history includes the establishment of Lodge Argyll in 1883 and its evolution through various constitutions and locations, including the iconic building in Bellingen, now an art gallery.

“The Lodge's history is marked by resilience and adaptation, from its early meetings by moonlight to its relocation and revival in the early 20th century.

“Lodge Raleigh's history is a tapestry of tradition, resilience, and community spirit that spans over a century in the early days of the Bellinger Valley just beginning to be settled by

Stan said the discovery of red cedar in 1841 attracted a wave of workers to the area, and it was from these pioneers that the foundations of Freemasonry in the Bellinger Valley were laid.

“In 1883, a group of these Masons came together with a shared vision, applying for a dispensation to establish a Lodge of free and accepted Masons on the Bellinger River,” he said.

“This led to the formation of Lodge Argyll, with Bro Thomas C. K. McKell as the Worshipful Master, marking the start of a formal Masonic presence in the valley.

“Initially meeting in private homes and later in a joint venture Temple in Fernmount, the Lodge navigated through various changes and challenges.

“It joined the United Grand Lodge of NSW under the English Constitution in 1888, adapting to the evolving landscape of Freemasonry.

“Despite financial difficulties in the late 1890s leading to a temporary surrender of its charter, the spirit of the lodge persisted.

“In a remarkable revival, former members of Lodge Argyll reestablished Masonic traditions in the Bellinger Valley in 1904, forming Lodge Raleigh.

“The lodge faced early challenges, including finding a suitable meeting place and navigating restrictions from the Grand Lodge.

“However, these obstacles only strengthened their resolve.”

A pivotal moment came in 1909 when Lodge Raleigh purchased land for a new

“It has been a cornerstone of the community, with its members actively involved in local development and philanthropy.

“The Lodge's journey, marked by perseverance, adaptability, and a deep sense of brotherhood, reflects the core values of Freemasonry.”

The Brothers believe the union of Lodge Raleigh with Lodge Fitzroy is more than just a merger.

“It is a harmonious blending of histories, traditions, and communities.

“It opens the door to new possibilities, ensuring that the legacy of Lodge Raleigh continues to thrive, now as part of a larger, more dynamic Masonic family on the Mid-

“It's a unique way of helping men become better human beings, using storytelling and meaningful symbols to teach important life lessons.

“Freemasonry is not a platform for gaining wealth or making business connections.

“While you may naturally form friendships and network with other members, the primary purpose of Freemasonry is personal growth, moral development, and community service.”

The non-profit organisation, while dedicated to offering companionship and aid both to members and the general community who may be in need, supports a number of charities.

The object of Freemasonry in New South Wales is the provision of community service, which in practice translates to a number of charitable works.

These range from building homes for the aged to post-secondary and post-graduate education scholarships, a benevolent fund to help Masons and non-Masons, as well as awards and equipment to assist the handicapped.

BCU Bank has announced a new community partnership with Lifeline North Coast, a leading provider of crisis support and suicide prevention services.

BCU Bank will support Lifeline North Coast, one of the 40 Lifeline centres operating across Australia, to deliver their essential services to the communities in the north coast region of New South Wales.

Lifeline North Coast operates a 24/7 telephone crisis line, as well as providing face-to-face counselling, community education, and suicide bereavement support.

BCU Bank General Manager Mark Smyth said the partnership reflects

the bank’s commitment to social responsibility. “As a customer-owned bank, we exist to support our members and communities and we’re proud to partner with Lifeline North Coast and contribute to their vital work. If you’re turning into the new year with a growth

mindset, you might fancy designing your yard to maximise food production.

Permaculture designing is all about working with nature to get the most out of every plant or element, as well as being mindful of the world in which we share.

Peter Lewis, President of Coffs Regional Community Gardens Association, shares key points about permaculture you can put into practice to get going.

“The most important tool in every garden is the pencil,” Peter told News Of The Area.

“Good designing is about trying ideas out on paper.

“Easier to move a tree by redrawing it than digging it out in five years when you find it’s shading the veggies in winter.”

The next most important element is “where is north?”.

“Every other element can be altered, except where the sun shines,” he said.

It’s a good idea to create either a two of three dimension map of the site.

For 2D, get a Google Earth photo of the site and print it out a few times on A3 size paper.

Or, using a large sheet of polystyrene, create a 3D layout which lets you see how shadows, frosts, wind or run-off might affect your garden.

The 3D is good as a hands-on practical way of moving elements around.

“Shine a torch across the design to see how the shadows land,” said Peter.

Peter’s ten key design points 1: Vision - what would your perfect garden look and feel like?

2: Create a base map, putting in existing structures, paths, gardens and trees.

Include neighbours and their structures, trees or public spaces that may impact your

site.

3: Site assessment and consultation with family and friends. You might get agreement with neighbours to plant cooperatively or build trellis or fencing that can be useful to both of you.

4: Do sector analysis where does the sun shine in the morning in winter? Are there buildings that shade the site? Is there prevailing wind or water runoff?

5: Zoning plan - in permaculture terms Zone Zero is you, your sense of contentment and purpose.

Zone 1 is the garden veggies you’re going to access the most, herbs, veggies you’ll put in everyday meals.

Zone 5 are things you’ll access maybe once every year or even longer.

An olive tree gets picked once a year.

Could it be planted as a street tree or on a reserve or an easement and shared?

6: A bubble map is the written explanation of ideas or elements on an overlay sheet. You can alter these things later as you reconsider your design.

7: Your concept plan may be done as a group in the workshop but can be done as a ‘pitch’ to family, friends or clients.

8: Review and edit - take out the ideas that didn’t work. Remove the Bunya tree that will drop ten kilograms of nuts on your car etc.

9: Do a detailed design that you can use for years to come (modify as you go).

Remember a plan is a guide not a doctrine.

10: Present your finished design to show how clever you are.

Pink Silks Trust supports women following sexual assault

By Andrea FERRARI SPECIALISED equipment that will help support women who have been sexually assaulted has been gifted to Coffs Harbour Health Campus’ Emergency Department.

The local charity, Pink Silks Trust (PST), made the $7,500 donation to purchase a gynaecology treatment table which quickly transforms into a specialised examination bed, a lockable instrument trolley and specialised instruments.

“PST was approached by the specialists providing the essential service to women traumatised by sexual assault,

which unfortunately has increased in recent years,” Pink Silks Trust Chair and Cofounder Tanya Johnson OAM told News Of The Area.

Providing specialist equipment for these women gives them the care, thoroughness and sensitivity they need in this distressing time.

“To be able to provide an environment of support and comfort to these women through this vulnerable and difficult experience is vital,” Tanya said.

“We are so fortunate to live in a community that wants to help, that wants to be part of the support needed

for women going through a difficult time in their lives.

“We are grateful to be able to bring awareness to the health needs of our local women and be supported by the generosity of the Coffs community.”

Woopi Red Cross wraps up the year

IN a spirit of sharing and giving, Woolgoolga Red Cross members and volunteers wrapped up a busy and successful year with a massive Friendship Afternoon Tea focused on Christmas celebrations.

With fabulous decorations, festive food and a feeling of fun in the air, around 80 people enjoyed

the afternoon.

MC Scott Rodham didn’t let anyone down with his expected repertoire of corny jokes and quizzes, and Coordinator Kerry Chaffey had an unlimited supply of chocolates as prizes for the lucky winners.

Pianist Jenny Haliday, recently back from surgery, accompanied the carol singing and provided the musical background.

The junior St Francis Xavier school singers, under the leadership of teacher Katrina Ryan, wowed everyone with their talent and sheer pleasure in entertaining the crowd and then touched hearts with handmade Christmas cards for everyone.

Tom’s tips for tertiary prep

TOORMINA local Thomas Henderson is one of 50 TAFE NSW graduates who studied a university preparation course that provides access to universities without the HSC. Tom has been studying for the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation (TPC) and has just received his results, a Tertiary Entrance Score of an ATAR equivalent of at least 97.

The Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation (TPC) is a nationally accredited qualification offering a Tertiary Entrance Score, an ATAR equivalent, recognised by universities and employers as a year 12 equivalent qualification.

According to Jobs and Skills Australia, over the next ten years, more than nine out of ten new jobs expected to be created will require post-secondary

qualifications.

“After realising that my high school performance didn't reflect my academic potential, I enrolled in the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation as a second chance to get into university,” Tom told News Of The Area.

“The course engaged me in ways high school never did; I genuinely enjoyed every lesson and appreciated the course's flexible structure.”

As part of the course Tom studied subjects such as Mathematics Advanced and Statistics as he thought they would be the most useful in setting him up for university study.

“I’ve always been technically oriented and interested in starting my own business, so thanks to my high Tertiary Entrance score next year I’m planning to study a double degree in Economics and Science.

“Completing the course has the potential to change lives by increasing employment opportunities, preparing students for the workforce of the future and paving the way for lifelong learning.”

She has placed a Christmas Teddy Wreath in the window of the NRMA offices in Woolgoolga Central and the Christmas teddies are popping up in doctors’ surgeries and peeping out from the BCU Christmas tree.

Seabastion wins People’s Choice in national portrait prize

COFFS Harbour artist Seabastion Toast has won the 2023 Portia Geach People’s Choice award with a portrait of fellow artist Karlee Rawkins called ‘How the light gets in’.

This annual award is given

by Dr Heather Macorison and Hilary Macorison, in memory of their parents Harry and Winifred Macorison, who recognised the importance of the People's Choice in making people slow down and develop a critical eye.

The Portia Geach competition, held by Sydney’s S.H. Ervin Gallery in The Rocks, is open to Australian female artists for the best portrait painted from life of a man or woman distinguished in art, letters or the sciences.

Seabastion told News Of The Area, “Being a part of the Portia Geach award for two year's running means a lot to me…the standard is incredibly high and the competition fierce and inspiring.

“Just to be hung at the iconic S.H. Ervin Gallery, right next to the Opera House in Sydney, is an honour.”

She said to be chosen by the public for the People's Choice award “completely blew me away”.

“Not being a Sydney local, such an accolade makes me think the work really managed to connect with the majority

of people and as an artist, these connections are integral to my practice.

“It is heart-warming to know that not only have people taken the time to view my work but have also gone the extra mile to cast their votes in my favour.

“Beyond my personal gain, I believe that the existence of a People’s Choice award serves to engage a broader and more diverse audience, allowing for greater connection, critical thinking and conversation about the art, an education and exchange from which we all benefit.”

On her work, Seabastion said, “My decision to paint Karlee Rawkins was driven by a unique convergence of time and place.

“Over two decades ago, we embarked on our undergraduate journey together, forging the foundations of our artistic paths.

“While life led us down different roads, fate has brought us back to the same community once more.

“In creating this portrait, I sought to capture the essence of Karlee's world - a world illuminated by the winter light streaming through the windows of her home in the lush hinterlands of the midnorth coast.”

Karlee lives and works in Bellingen.

“This play of light and nature serves as a symbolic representation of her work, which delves into the profound connections between wildlife, nature, and the human psyche.

“Rawkins' life is a harmonious juxtaposition of intelligence, thoughtfulness, and responsibilities of motherhood.

“Amid the chaos of family life, she radiates a meditative serenity, an unwavering devotion to her craft always at the forefront of her mind.

“Her life and art are inseparable, a testament to her enduring commitment.

“I have attempted to capture a small part of the rich tapestry of Karlee Rawkins' life and career through this painting – a portrait of an inspiring friend and an extraordinary artist at a profoundly enriching point in her journey,” said Seabastion.

Seabastion believes the People’s Choice voting process requires people to stop and truly observe the paintings.

“For me, this looking and reflecting is an essential element of my process.

“I create art as a means of slowing down time, and I believe that in our fast-paced world, art becomes even more valuable as it invites us to pause, muse and connect with the essence of our humanity.

Gardeners embrace ‘landrace’ initiative for resilient local sweetcorn

A GROUP of some 30 Coffs Coast veggie gardeners are trying their luck at growing a different type of heirloom sweetcorn crop this year, a genetically diverse one.

“Any crop grown over and over in one place can become landraced when the seeds are saved and resown,” Mr Earth, the founder of The Gourmet Garden School, told News Of The Area.

The benefit of cultivating

a landrace is that the plants become more suited to local conditions.

“Consequently, our crops grow better, faster, easier, with less fuss, less pests and less fertiliser.”

“Many seed savers know that to ensure ‘true to type’ progeny from their parent plants, most heirloom vegetables need to be grown separately, to prevent genetic crossing.

“This is important for heirloom seed saving, because isolating and in-breeding them is what gave rise to the stable ‘heirloom’ variety.

“But this ‘purity’ comes at a cost, a gradual loss in resilience and genetic capacity to adapt,” he said.

Landrace gardening does the exact opposite and deliberately mixes different varieties together for the purpose of cross-breeding and boosting genetic diversity.

“All up we’re growing eight different varieties of sweetcorn, sourced from fifteen different locations around the country.

“The seed has been deliberately sourced from as many climates as possible to ensure genetic variation,” said Mr Earth.

“We’ve even got seeds

from Tasmania, where the corn is adapted for short seasons and cold/wet harvest conditions.

“Those types of adaptations would enable this mix to quickly adapt to the cold conditions up on the Dorrigo Plateau.”

The participants all met in September to count and evenly distribute the different varieties so that every participant received the same number and same variety of seeds in their starter pack.

It sounds like a novelty, mixing everything up and seeing what thrives, but Mr Earth reminds us, “It’s actually how we all used to grow food, back when every community grew food and before globalisation.”

The Great Australian Landrace is a not-for-profit initiative and all participants are sharing their progress through monthly zoom calls and have pledged to share their seeds with friends and neighbours to share the love post-harvest.

Yt DiNGO launches new single

YT DiNGO, local music and dance artist Travers Ross, has released his latest single, Temptalien, described as “an introspective journey into personal growth and the profound connection between self and heritage”.

Known for his ability to weave intricate narratives into soulstirring compositions, Temptalien blends ethereal melodies with poignant lyrics that delve into the artist’s experiences of overcoming past trauma and rediscovering his roots.

“The track carries a profound message about healing and forging new connections with oneself and cultural identity,” said Travers.

The distinctive sound creates an otherworldly atmosphere.

Filmed on the Mid North Coast ocean, the single’s video is mesmerising.

Set aboard The Notorious, a full size, sailing recreation of a 15th century vessel of exploration, the Portuguese or Spanish caravel, we see Yt DiNGO, alone at sea, reflecting on the imprint of colonialism and the diseases it has brought upon him.

Emily Wurramara, a spirit on the ship, sings him towards the ocean, where he encounters characters of himself lured by different temptations that he must overcome.

In making the video Travers worked with local talent.

“Two young stunt doubles, Tahani Berger and Shavonne Barlow, appeared in the mermaid roles.

“They swam beautifully and were a real delight to create these scenes with.”

He also met Graham and Felicity from The Notorious at the Jetty Wharf.

“I’m mind blown at their magic ship creation that they live on.

“The song itself also features two incredible local musicians, Manduway Dutton on piano and Jennen Ngiau-Keng on violin.

“We have some incredible talent to utilise in the area and a lot more where this all came from,” he said.

Swans Visit

THE SYDNEY Swans men’s team are set for a return to Coffs Harbour in late January.

The Swans will be in Coffs Harbour from Sunday, 28 January to Wednesday, 31 January for a pre-season training and community camp.

The club will also hold an intra-club practice match which will be open to spectators.

The Swans team will take part in community and leadership activities, with a kids clinic and signing session on Monday, 29 January at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium.

For pets and people doing it tough

HEALTHY Pet Day, an outreach program run by RSPCA NSW, came to Coffs Harbour in mid-December, providing services and initiatives that improve the welfare and wellbeing of animals and their owners who are finding it tough financially.

Open to pension and/or concession card holders, the day-long event saw a total of 54 animals, 40 dogs and fourteen cats.

Each pet was health checked, and provided with parasite protection and food on the day, with 29 dogs and twelve cats receiving vaccinations.

A further 5 dogs and four

cats were microchipped.

The annual event was hosted in collaboration with local partners Pete's Place, Vets Beyond Borders, TAFE NSW, Pacific Vet Care and Coffs Shelter, with additional support provided by Animal Rescue Cooperative (ARC), Petbarn Foundation and City of Coffs Harbour council.

“It takes a collective to provide these days and it came together so well in Coffs Harbour,” RSPCA NSW Outreach and Education Manager Emma Davidson told News Of The Area.

“We set up behind Pete’s Place and the whole day had a real community feel.

“There’s been a rise in people ‘doing it tough’ in Coffs and it was a real privilege to

hear people’s stories.

“They really care for their animals but are suffering financial difficulties at the moment.”

That’s where Healthy Pet Days step in, from a “totally non-judgemental place”.

“Prevention is the biggest reason why we do outreach work,” said Emma.

“Our goal is to improve animal welfare, not just in the home, but in the community as a whole.”

Healthy Pet Days work collaboratively at a local level providing animals with the care they require, and helping people and their pets to stay together, irrespective of financial circumstances.

By Andrea FERRARI IN A bid to shape the future of education TAFE NSW has launched its first digital community consultation to seek input from every resident across NSW on how its training, support services, and facilities can better support and enable their community.

The consultation is hosted on the ‘Have your Say’ Platform, an allof-government digital community engagement platform in partnership with the Department of Customer Service.

It is open now until 6 February 2024 and locals across the Coffs Coast are being invited to participate and share their local community needs and aspirations with the public training provider.

Alison McGaffin, TAFE NSW Executive Director Regional and Community Engagement, said locals have the option to participate in the online survey and ideas board.

“As regional economies and local communities transform, TAFE NSW wants to be on the front foot of developing communitybased solutions aligned to

their needs,” she said.

“At its heart, this is about ensuring communities feel strongly connected to TAFE NSW. “Whether you’re a local business owner, a parent, a school leaver, or have diverse needs, we want to hear from you.

“Securing local grants and receiving additional funding for our Outreach programs would absolutely benefit the welfare and well-being of both pets and their owners in the region.”

Rethink waste at Party in the Park

By Andrea FERRARI EVER on its path to creating sustainable communities, local environmental charity OzGREEN is partnering with Camp Creative to reduce landfill and educate the community about the profound impact their waste choices can have at their ‘Party in the Park’ event in Bellingen on Thursday 11 January.

It’s a perfect opportunity for OzGREEN to share its ‘Rethink Waste’ program,

a waste initiative aimed at transforming the way communities think about and manage waste.

The program sees community volunteers educating and sorting waste at major events to redirect waste that would have otherwise ended up in landfill, but also, to have a flow on effect on communities’ household waste habits.

“OzGREEN has been working with event managers over the past few years with

IN the past month, The House of Representatives in Canberra has found time to reflect on the work of Garry Nehl, with an official minute's silence.

But Coffs Harbour and the citizens of the electorate of Cowper seem to have no memory at all of the work that this man did for our electorate.

I, for one, am saddened with the knowledge that Garry Nehl will never be able to experience a drive along a fully completed replacement roadway for the old Pacific Highway.

Most of us now experience and benefit from the easy driving conditions between south Coffs and Sydney and north Coffs and the Tweed - and we eagerly await, as Garry

did, the Coffs Bypass.

We have too easily forgotten the misery and pain caused too many of us by accidents on that old road.

For example the bus crashes at Ulmarra and Clybucca and the forest trees north of Urunga.

So, I am grateful that Garry Nehl's invitation to the NSW Premier, and I am led to believe, the Prime

City beautification DEAR News Of The Area, I MUST agree with your correspondent Julia Atkinson (NOTA 15 December 23) with Council's poor record in the beautification of Coffs Harbour.

To the roundabouts we can add the block retaining wall between Combine Street and McLean St. It is black with the grime from the passing of thousands of vehicles and the concrete path below is

covered with dead and dying weeds.

Then there is Council’s latest offering, the small park at the intersection of Moonee St and the highway, possibly the only bit of greenery in the city centre.

Minister of the day, was accepted and they travelled with him by road to inspect the many black-spots along the length of the Pacific Highway.

Funds and plans for the replacement M1 road, followed soon after their trip, I am told.

I am not an authority on the work of this local member for the wider Cowper community, as I have only been a citizen of Cowper for 30 years.

But, I am advised that he also worked hard to set up Meals on Wheels in Coffs and Sawtell and also on the development of

several nursing homes in the electorate; that he took local advice and did not support the construction of a Cultural Centre and a Marine Studies Centre on Corambirra Point; while the permanent preservation of the Antarctic wilderness and the education of Tibetans on how to grow vegetables to improve their vegetable diets and hence overall health were more worldwide issues that Garry worked at.

I am sure that many of your readers would do far better than this, and I hope they do, via, further letters to the editor!

On reflection, and with consent from Garry's family, it would seem that a Thanksgiving/ Commemoration service could be held in that new multi-purpose space at the new Yarilla Place council building, so that the work of Garry Nehl could be more accurately described and even, maybe, we could convince Transport for NSW to name an entry/exit complex on the new Coffs bypass with his name.

Council’s idea of beautification was to cover the whole park in wood chips.

Then of course there is graffiti, with the sound suppression barrier around the Wongala Estate now defaced for close on two years with no attempt by Council to remove it.

What a great northern

entrance to the city for our residents and tourists.

If Council can have specialist crews to maintain our sewerage services, water supply, roads, kerbs and gutters, footpaths, parks and gardens, bush regeneration and public amenities, why can’t there be a specialist crew tasked with the removal of graffiti?

The longer it remains on display the more it encourages others to add to it or to create more “masterpieces”.

Best sporting clubs of 2023

IT’s been another big year of sport on the Coffs Coast.

From the Woolgoolga Seahorses breaking their premiership drought, to the Woolgoolga Wolves doing the same to win North Coast Football’s premier competition, a number of sporting clubs triumphed throughout the year.

Here are the best sporting clubs of 2023.

Woolgoolga Seahorses: An historic season for the club winning their maiden Group 2 Rugby League first grade premiership.

Also won the Under 15s premiership, and finished runners up in both the reserve grade and League Tag competitions.

Coffs Harbour Snappers: Won the Mid North Coast Rugby Union Northern Division’s reserve grade premiership.

Also finished as runners up and minor premiers in the first grade competition.

SCU Marlins: Shone brightly in the juniors winning the Under 18s Boys, Under 16s Boys, and Under 14s Girls premierships.

Coffs Harbour Comets:

Won the Group 2 Rugby League reserve grade and League Tag premierships.

Were also strong in the juniors winning the Under 14s premiership, and finished runners up in the Under 11s and Under 13s.

Sawtell Panthers: The Panthers women won the North Coast Women’s Rugby League premiership in their debut season in the competition.

The club also featured prominently in the junior ranks, winning the Under 16s League Tag premiership, and finishing runners up in the Under 15s and Under 16s.

S a w t e l l / To o r m i n a Saints: Won the AFL North Coast’s Under 18s premiership, with both their men’s first grade and women’s teams playing finals, they and Port Macquarie the only clubs to feature in both finals series.

Beaches Hockey Club: Won the Women’s Division 1 and Under 16s premierships in the Hockey Coffs Coast season.

Urunga Hockey Club: Won Hockey Coffs Coast’s Men’s Division 1 and Men’s Division 2 premierships.

Woolgoolga United FC: Won their maiden first grade men’s grand final since the club’s formation in 1971.

Also finished as senior premiers in the Men’s reserves competition, and were strong in the juniors as season premiers in the 12 Boys 1st Division, 12 Girls 2nd Division, and 16 Girls.

Boambee FC: Produced arguably the two most dominant teams in North Coast Football competitions, as the Boambee Eagles lost just once on their way to winning the Women’s 1st Division season premiership and grand final double, while the Boambee B52 Bombers won all their matches to win the Over 35s competition.

Northern Storm FC: Finished as season premiers of the Men’s Premier League, and produced two unbeaten season premiers in the 16 Boys 1st Division and 12 Girls 1st Division.

Coffs Harbour Breakers: Became the first club to win the AFL North Coast’s women’s premiership for the second time since the competition’s inception in 2018.

Longest Day tees off

IT’S TEE time for golfers across the Sawtell and Coffs Harbour region as The Longest Day gold challenge swings into action to raise funds for Cancer Council.

Golfers are encouraged to sign up with a team or to join other club members.

Having participated since The Longest Day’s inception, Brandon Connor tee-ed off once again at the Coffs Harbour Golf Club on Monday 18 December, raising $5,100 for Cancer Council.

Completing the foursome were Jack Pountey, Suzie Fisher and Brenton Cook.

“The day was great fun for a great cause,” Brandon told News Of The Area.

“The heat was very intense and made for an

exhausting and challenging day.

“This year was extra important for myself with my father-in-law having a bout with cancer.

“I was extra motivated to raise money and get the 72 holes done,” he said.

The Longest Day officially tee-ed off on Monday 11 December, with participants able to take on the challenge at their local golf club anytime during December and January.

Participants are challenged to play four rounds of golf (72 holes) in one day at their own club with their friends and fellow members.

Embracing Day 1 of the campaign, Sawtell Golf Club’s Brendan Barnes led a team playing the full 72 holes on Monday.

q Brandon Connor said this year’s Longest Day was extra important to him with his fatherin-law’s experience with cancer.

Brendan played in his hickory outfit and with his hickory clubs.

He’s recently returned from the Australian Open where he was the caddy for Amelia Mehmet-Grohn.

Striking while the iron was hot, he suggested Amelia join his Brendan Barnes Golf Academy team and she accepted.

Also on the team is local sportsman Josh Ives, who represented the North Coast and NSW/ACT in the National Special Olympics in Tasmania last year and took out third place in his 18hole category, and Lachlan Smith, who finished second in the Queensland Inclusive Championships last year.

Brendan’s father Mike died from cancer in 2020.

for the grand final of the Australian Boardriders Battle series, after winning the NSW North event on their homebreak.

Three of its members also won national surfing titles.

Valleys Cricket Club: North Coast Cricket Council’s Premier League champions, and also won the Premier League’s T20 competition.

The club also won the under 16s premiership and the Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s T20 Cup. Sawtell Dodgers: Won both the A-grade and B-grade championships of Coffs Harbour Baseball Association’s season.

Pauline and Brendan, ran an annual Prostate Cancer Golf Day. Further south, Adam Crotty and Rick McKinnon will play The Longest Day in Urunga on 20 January 2024.

They have set a fundraising target of $10,000.

Cancer Council’s Community Fundraising Coordinator Christine Williams said while The Longest Day is an endurance challenge that tests skill and stamina, it is easy to get involved – and a whole lot of fun.

“The Longest Day

challenges participants to successfully complete all four rounds of golf during daylight hours – a challenge that many keen golfers are eager to conquer,” she said.

“Participants will be making a difference by raising funds to support Cancer Council’s life-saving cancer research, prevention programs, and information and support services.

“Across NSW, it is estimated that over 53,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year, that’s over 146 people hearing the words ‘you have cancer’ every day.”

Veteran actors Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi (pictured above) shine brighter than the golden Queensland setting in this comedic crime series.

Premiering tonight with eight snappy episodes up its sleeve, the plot focuses on the playful friendship between Brown’s retired copper Jack Darby, who runs into Scacchi’s Joan Kirkhope, a Brit recently arrived in Australia to find out how and why her husband died here. With this intriguing overarching mystery, the gorgeous setting and chemistry between the leads plays out as together they tackle a different mystery in each episode.

After nine seasons, you’d think that plucky traveller and conversationalist Heather Ewart (pictured) would have just about exhausted this country’s supply of remote, quaint towns to traverse. In this 10th outing, her exploration of the heart and soul of small Aussie communities finds yet more gems, kicking off with a small but wellknown and coveted holiday hotspot: Byron Bay’s less flashy neighbour, Brunswick Heads. Ewart meets locals Brett Haylock and Chris Chen, who share their story of restoring the town’s dilapidated 1960s cinema into a vibrant attraction. There is also former marine biologist Andy Graeme-Cook, who chats about his personal mission to make the beaches accessible for all.

“The ladies are always supportive.”

Currently there’s a mixed competition on Tuesday evenings which attracts around 90 players.

Needing more numbers for the ladies competition this year, some gentlemen have participated, too.

They have enjoyed being included and report that it is a

different style of tennis, with longer rallies than in the mixed competition.

Being an interclub competition, the ladies play at Coffs Harbour (TieBreak Tennis Academy), England's Park (Jetty Tennis), Westside Tennis Club and Sawtell Tennis Club.

The highest score in the recent Thursday night competition belonged to Talia Donovan with a

whopping 123 points.

Judy Thorn was runner up with 117 points, with special mention going to Steve Newberry, who had the highest average score of 16.8 points (out of a possible 18 points).

The Association told NOTA that none of this would be possible without the tireless effort of recorder Lady Hernandez.

Lady manages to organise draws and venues, keep the scores and play

each week too.

She can often be seen laughing, singing and dancing on the court too.

In 2024, the Association hopes to acquire some sponsors.

By Mary KEILY DESPITE sweltering heat and little breeze, a merry band of Thursday night women’s tennis players, from as far south as Nambucca Heads and north as Woolgoolga, recently celebrated a great season of social tennis with some bubbles and canapes at Westside Tennis Club.

The Coffs Harbour and District Tennis Association (CHDTA) has been running the interclub competition, also known as the ‘social competition’, since 1999.
