The DIAP is an extremely important document which explains how Council works to support people with disabilities so that they can participate in all areas of community life.

It focuses on four key areas including: developing positive community attitudes and behaviours,creating liveable communities, supporting access to meaningful employment, improving access to services through better systems and processes.

get to treatment, travelling over 40,000kms, even during COVID-19 lockdown.

SAWTELL Super Fun Day sadly postponed.

Following todays announcement of 11,200 COVID infections in NSW, the local community has expressed their concern for the risk presented by the annual Sawtell Super Fun Day comprising the Fun Run, Street Parade and Entertainment at the Village Green.

Concerns raised included: • The unavoidable close proximity of Fun Run competitors • The risk of spectators of the Street Parade congregating in close proximity • The entertainment on the Village Green is focused on families with young children, many being under the age for vaccination.

Considering these concerns and recognising the probability of higher infection rates between now and Saturday, the organising committee have reluctantly decided it was socially responsible to postpone the Fun Day to a date to

be decided.

We are highly conscious of the time, effort and money put in by many in preparation for this event. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but the health and safety of the community has to be our priority.

Helping The Arts And Environment Prosper With Community Support FROM Page 1 collections averages 3.1kg of debris captured per day, of which 41.1% was microfibres and microplastics Prosper Coffs Harbour oversees three trusts, Cultural, Environmental and Futures, that are used to fund projects across the City that are important to the ongoing growth and development of the economic, social, cultural and environmental base of the community.

It is a not-for-profit company, set up by the Coffs Harbour City Council in 2012, and is tasked with developing a secure source of funds for important infrastructure.

Another example of its work is the Schools Environmental Grants Program which has recently funded a new rainwater tank for Crossmaglen Public School, to provide a sustainable and renewable source of water to continue their organic vegetable garden.

Coramba Public School, William Bayldon Public School and Narranga Public School were also grant recipients.

A major project of the Environmental Trust is the Children's Environmental Education Garden, previously reported in News Of The Area.

Plans have been completed for the garden which will provide a dedicated space for environmental education for visiting school groups and the wider community.

The Cultural Trust is a source of funding for the promotion of literature, music, performing arts, visual arts, design, new media, Aboriginal Arts and creative

industries within the Coffs Harbour local government area.

Its Scholarship Fund assists young emerging artists in all art forms in their chosen field, and Mhairi Gorman, the first recipient of a Coffs Harbour Cultural Trust Youth Scholarship, was able to take part in a dance festival in the US, thanks to its support.

As well, Harry Peterson has been selected as the first Youth Ambassador for the Coffs Harbour Cultural Trust.

Harry will work closely with the Advisory Committee to provide feedback on projects that will support local youth in the creative arts, helping to inspire others to pursue their own creative passion!

Scholarship in 2020, Harry has pursued his passion in music, and is now studying a Bachelor of Music/Arts at the University of Newcastle.

December 18.

Featuring hula hoop practice, pictures with Santa, quality live music and much more, there was truly something on offer for everyone in attendance.

Christmas cheer for Coffs hospital staff VITAL NSW Health staff working at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital on Christmas Day received a nice surprise from Woolgoolga Lions Club and Woolgoolga High School students to thank them for working on Christmas Day and for their efforts throughout the year.

Woolgoolga Lions Club members donated three boxes of the Lions Club’s popular traditional mini Christmas fruit cakes and Woolgoolga High School Student Representative Council (SRC) members got on board and created Christmas cards filled with

personal messages for the hospital staff to receive along with the Christmas cakes on Christmas Day. Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) corporate relations manager Sharon Fuller thanked Woolgoolga Lions Club members and Woolgoolga High School SRC members for the donations, and said hospital staff were very grateful for this act of kindness.

“This is such a lovely surprise for our staff who are rostered on Christmas Day, particularly after the year we’ve had,” Ms Fuller said.

“Woopi Lions has been

such a great friend to our hospital and our patients, they’ve always been there to support us, so I wasn’t surprised when they contacted us again.”

Woolgoolga Lions Club vice president Karen Dorahy and Woolgoolga High School science teacher said the school’s SRC body wanted to do something for the community.

“Students made Christmas cards as a thankyou to the hospital staff working on Christmas Day,” Ms Dorahy said.

The Christmas donations were firstly gifted to the hospital’s vital Emergency Department,

Maternity Unit and Intensive Care Unit staff working on Christmas Day,

then distributed to other hospital staff working on the day to provide them

BLOOMS the Chemist Toormina has a Christmas Hampers tradition and come hail and a heavy storm that washed out their business, the fundraiser went ahead to reach a total of $2,211.20 to be donated to ‘Make A Wish Foundation’.

“Cramming into the Sawtell store we have been able to continue servicing our community with deliveries, webster packs, prescription medications and smiles.

Free gardening workshop at Coffs Community Garden

SATURDAY 8 January 2022 sees a free gardening workshop happening in Coffs Community Garden.

Ian Thomas, Founder of the Gourmet Garden School, based at Raleigh is offering the no-charge workshop for anyone interested in growing their own fresh food at home or in a community garden.

The event will be held at the Coffs Community Garden in Combine St, on Saturday 8 January at 9am-1pm.

“Suited for novice, beginner and intermediate gardeners, the workshop participants will explore the principles of growing quality food at home, the many practical and logistical considerations for getting a good result with food that tastes nice, yields well while avoiding or minimising pest problems,” Ian told News Of The Area.

Advocating best practice organic and ecological techniques Ian will be guiding participants through the process of planning their own garden spaces, crop selection and a basic soil improvement plan to set them up for success.

“Since Covid, I mainly offer online e-courses and consultation services and I’m choosing to offer this workshop because I’m concerned that there’s an increasing urgency for people who want to grow some or more of their own quality food at home.

“In my experience, there are many who’d like to grow some fresh food, but either have past failures overshadowing them or uncertainty about where and how to start.

“Food gardening is often perceived as being complex or ‘big thing to do’, but the

reality is that 90% of the effort is planning and setting up the garden and if done properly, it takes very little time to maintain.

“In fact, the delight of having abundant fresh food, the superior quality and nicer flavours far exceed what we can buy and so it seems like anyone not growing a small patch of food is missing out in a big way,” said Ian. Participants must register to secure their place.

Naughty Or Nice Christmas Special Wows the Crowd

THE Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studio (WPAS) wrote and performed the ‘Naughty or Nice Christmas Special’ to the delight of a packed house at the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium last week.

The satirical cabaret show had the audience in stitches upon entry as MC Kurt (Teo Ross) bossed around cast members in a Devil Wears Prada fashion.

Last Sunday’s matinee was the final curtain for the hilarious production and if this is anything to go by, Coffs Harbour locals and tourists are in for a festival of fun and entertainment as more shows are scheduled over the holidays.

Teacher and artistic director at WPAS Jade Naidu said there’s space for

adult performers to push boundaries.

“It’s been an incredible experience to provide a space for adult theatre performers to push their own boundaries and limitations when it comes to putting on a show.

“From contributing to the character and writing development to designing their own costumes, this class has enhanced each performer's experience to become more rounded in their performing arts knowledge and feel confident within their skill set and abilities,” said Jade.

The cast of 20 local performers produced a hilarious dramaturgy that left the audience on their feet clapping in hope the show wouldn’t end.

Woolgoolga played the role of show Director and embraced the audience feedback.

“Best quote I was given from the audience was I didn’t want the show to end, and now neither do I,” said Kristy.

Emily Cooper played Kitty who cut loose embracing the comedic character.

“I was able to let loose, I wasn’t a serious character, I was Kitty and I felt happy, silly and fun and confident.

“I was finally acknowledged for something a lot of people enjoy seeing and it feels amazing that the audiences tell you themselves and have such amazing feedback.

“Everyone involved should be giving themselves a pat on the back and be proud because this show

is definitely something to remember for a long time,” said Emily.

$33 million boost for not-for-profits MORE than 400 notfor-profit organisations delivering services and support to the community’s most vulnerable people will share in $33 million to help them enhance their services and meet the needs of clients.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Alister Henskens said the NSW Government’s Social Sector Support Fund would provide a financial

boost for organisations who have worked around the clock throughout the pandemic.

“These organisations are delivering critical frontline services and support to vulnerable people and this program will ease financial pressure and help them recover after what’s been an incredibly challenging 18 months,” Mr Henskens said.

“This funding will

provide 417 not-for-profits with between $10,000 and $200,000, so they can continue to deliver critical services to the people who need it most.”

The grants support organisations which did not receive JobSaver or JobSaver Not-For-Profit and are working across child and family services, domestic violence, homelessness, health, disability and animal

welfare sectors.

Attorney General and Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Sexual Violence Mark Speakman said critical frontline services experienced greater demand and increased complexity of cases throughout lockdown and this funding will give them a hand-up.

Coffs Harbour Local community theatre finishes the year on a high MEMBERS of Coffs Harbour Amateur Theatrical Society (CHATS) and Coffs Harbour Musical Comedy Company (CHMCC) gathered for a Christmas celebration at the Jetty memorial Theatre pergola space on Sunday December 19.

This final activity rounded out a successful year for both companies despite the challenges raised by pandemic restrictions on face-toface gatherings, reduced audience sizes, changes to the rules on group density and other issues including mask rules.

March saw CHATS present ‘Steel Magnolias’ directed by Donna Fairall, replacing the original director due to pandemic induced relocations, and reduced audiences were treated to a superb production that drew laughter and tears in equal measure.

CHMCC started the year with the late Stephen Sondheim’s musical ‘Into the Woods’ directed by

newcomer Tim Gibbs (also replacing the original director) which had been held over after commencing rehearsals in the previous year, and while audiences were down the production was hailed as a major success in presenting this challenging show.

CHATS returned to the stage in July with a new

Australian comedy from Melbourne playwright Rob Selzer, directed by your correspondent, once again smaller audiences than usual were treated to a fresh new comedy that gave the four cast members opportunities to shine and deliver a truly funny show.

Oscar Wilde comedy ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ directed by Rex Madigan, with a well picked cast this show delivered laughs a plenty and showcased the talents of several cast members who had mostly performed in musicals previously.

The final show of the year, CHMCC’s ‘Mamma Mia’ directed by Dee Tune turned out to be a record breaker,

selling out the entire season of twenty shows and breaking box office earnings records for the company, the show was a high energy presentation of sheer joy, uplifting audiences throughout the run.

CHMCC President Peter Hodges told News Of The Area, “This show has been the most enjoyable production I have been lucky enough to be a part of, and

the fact that audiences just loved it is a testament to the quality of the production from start to finish.”

Both CHATS and CHMCC are self-funded not-forprofit incorporated bodies that receive no Government funding and will be back next year with a varied and inclusive season of productions at the Jetty Memorial Theatre.

Waste not and repurpose, that’s the way

CHRISTMAS can be a challenging time for the environment due to the massive amount of waste created.

“This Christmas, Coffs Harbour City Council’s (CHCC) sustainability team were determined to come up with solutions in our own workplace that we hoped may in turn inspire others to get creative and help reduce waste one step at a time,” Andrew Davis, CHCC’s Sustainable Living & Community Programs Coordinator - Community Programs told News Of The Area.

“With our tub of office Christmas tinsel looking a bit worse for wear, it was the perfect opportunity to

dream up a more sustainable alternative than yet more plastic.

“Fabric bunting was the decoration of choice.

“Now we just needed a sustainable source of fabric and a talented team of willing sewers.

“Enter our amazing community partners Lifeline North Coast Donation Centre and Anglicare Next Level program. “The Lifeline Donation Centre in High Tech Drive is a treasure trove of second-hand wonders but often so much of donated textiles including clothing, bed linen and curtains just aren’t fit for resale.

“A recent report identified that every year in NSW about 240 000 tonnes or up to 80% of unwanted textiles end up in landfill.

“This ends up being a costly situation for our charities, waste facilities and ultimately our local environment.”

Anglicare’s Next Level program works with community members from diverse cultural backgrounds and at their thriving Multicultural Hub in the heart of Coffs, with tubs of donated fabric, 17 women from refugee backgrounds – from highly experienced to first time sewers – ended up creating over 160 metres of colourful bunting.

“Not only did this colourful and festive bunting bring an incredible gift of joy to the office space, it is also set to be used again and again to decorate community events throughout the local area for many years to come.

“It’s a win for the community and a win for the environment,” said Andrew.

Woolgoolga Red Cross Branch Patron, Robyn Rooth, told News Of The Area, “Woolgoolga Red Cross Branch was finally able to celebrate together as a group beginning with a Christmas party to acknowledge the work of the past year in supporting the vulnerable in multiple ways after months of restrictions and cautions.

“Members and friends also came together to recognise 30 years of sustained activities in Woolgoolga.

“Whilst the Branch operated during both World Wars supporting the war effort

Retiring Zone Representative David Dodsworth was recognised for his role by incoming Zone Representative Maureen Hammond from Coffs Harbour.

Several members were presented with 10-year Service Medals to recognise their commitment to the Branch.

“Members and volunteers with the local Branch are now looking forward to resuming normal activities in 2022 and once again reaching out to support the vulnerable with compassion and understanding.

“They join together to wish our community a peaceful and healthy New Year,” said Robyn.

Summer Dreams gets Bello dancing MUSIC and performing arts lovers of all ages converged on the Summer Dreams festival at the Bellingen Showgrounds from 17-18 December.

The relaxed two-day festival was a celebration of all things great about Bellingen; with a focus on building community, fostering creative expression and highlighting local talent.

Organised by Ahva Dub, Director, UMBL Music, the lineup was an eclectic mix of locals and artists from further afield.

No two acts were the same, each bringing their own unique style and musical approach to the stage.

Kicking off on Friday afternoon, festival-goers were treated to an incredible range of genres, with highlights including Jumbaal Dreamin’, which featured Uncle Martin Ballangarry playing alongside his sons and nephews; and Queensland dance band OKA. Saturday was another q

bumper day of music and performance, with activities ranging from yoga in the morning to an intense display from Esasni Puppetry as the sun went down.

In the afternoon, Gunganbuwala, a G u m b ay n g g i r r - l a n g u a g e choir led by Uncle Micklo Jarrett, had the crowd singing in a beautifully authentic performance that inspired and informed the audience.

Later, DJs took to the stage as revellers danced the night away under a clear Bellingen sky.

Speaking to News Of The Area on Saturday afternoon, event organiser Ahva Dub described the festival as a “raging success”.

“There has been a little bit of rain and a little bit of sunshine and a lot of love,” Ahva said.

“A lot of people are catching up with old friends, sharing the good vibes and good music, just relaxing.

“When the big bands

“You can really feel the happiness, and see it on everyone’s faces, that's what it is all about.”

Ahva said it was great to see such a diverse crosssection of the community enjoying the festivities.

“When you think of community and you invite people along and just be open to that, it's amazing.”

With so many music and arts events postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to the impacts of Covid-19, Ahva said artists had been “itching” to take to the stage.

“People are able to show the talents that they have got, and they have been itching to show that for quite a while.

“They haven't had much of an opportunity.

“Events like this are really important for people’s headspace, just to feel normal again and come together to celebrate the talent in their

local community,” Ahva said.

For Uncle Martin Ballangarry, the festival was truly a family affair, with his playing group composed almost entirely of immediate family members.

“We really enjoyed ourselves,” Uncle Martin said.

“We have been playing together since the kids were in high school.

“They are all my kids, all six of them.”

When a bass playing family member pulled out last minute, there was no panic for Martin and the band.

“We bring family musicians in from every angle,” he said.

“Our bass player pulled out last night, so my other nephew said, ‘It’s okay Uncle I’ll play your songs’.”

“Anyone from the family can join in at any time, and just pick it up and run with it.”

Joining Uncle Martin and the band was ring-in drummer Leon Tussi, who also took to the stage for his own set on Saturday.

“We had Leon join us on the drums,” said Uncle Martin.

“We were honoured to have him, it was just deadly.” q

With the event branded a success by organisers and attendees alike, Uncle Martin would like to see more events of the same nature taking place in Bellingen, the Coffs Coast and the Nambucca Valley.

“I have been working with Lauren and Ahva (organisers) on and off, sharing ideas about a festival of this kind.

“This is a great start, and I think it can happen even bigger in the very near future,” he said.

Freedom of expression was the order of the day.

Paul brings laughter and light to Coffs

DID you see the Dancing Santa out the front of The Big Banana in Coffs?

That was Paul Wells.

Driven by a mission

to bring joy to the world, especially to children, Paul has taken inspiration from the worldwide charitable organisation, Save The Children, and adapted it to Save The Generation.

q “Hey, I'm on holiday,” said Tash Wishaw, as she climbed aboard the truck.

Born and bred in Coffs, Paul’s own life has had its tough times and for the past twenty-or-so years, he has felt a rising passion to bring play back into our day-to-day lives and now urges parents to make that commitment to their children.

“Parents, put down your phones and get genuinely involved with your children,” Paul told News Of The Area.

“Play with them, inspire their imaginations, if not now, then when?”

Many moons ago as a child Paul visited Finland and met Mr and Mrs Claus and from then on he’s seen himself as a Santa of sorts, bringing fun to children’s lives especially at Christmas.

So, this Christmas he decked out his goldencoloured truck with Santa figures, bright red stockings, Rudolph and elves and all manner of Christmas decorations and parked it out the front of the Big Banana.

“Remember laughter is the best medicine, so I’m playing a kind of cartoon character and bringing fun to Coffs.

“My main message for this Christmas holiday time to parents is ‘put down your phones and play with your children’ and to everyone ‘be yourself’,” said Paul.

Covid testing disgrace

ON the Tuesday before Christmas my wife and I decided to have a Covid test and arrived at the testing site at 7.50 am.

We departed after the completion of the test at 3.07 pm.

We were there for a total of 7 hours and 17 minutes most of which was spent in the holding car park areas in very unpleasant heat.

The only salvation was a young man who was providing complimentary water.

What an utter disgrace this is when on the one hand we are encouraged to "go and get tested" and yet are subjected to outrageous and unreasonable waiting times.

When we finally reached the testing tent, there were only two people administering the tests.

When I rang the local members' office (twice) and mentioned my waiting time at four hours and then at six hours I was told that there were more numbers at the testing site because of interstate visitors who wanted to go into Queensland.

More the reason for either a larger testing site or more sites.

If you ask more people to the BBQ you have to order more food.

We rang some friends who live in Byron Bay and they said there are three testing sites there yet here in Coffs Harbour we have only one.

There were many cars in front of us who simply left their position in the lines because they were annoyed at the excessive wait time.

There is no way that we will subject ourselves to this spectacle again and I fear that there may be many people who should be having the test and are not.

The NSW government is splashing money around in various channels and surely some of it should be spent in making the Covid testing throughout the state less onerous.

DEAR Jasminda,

Our neighbours have gone away for three weeks, and they've asked me to water their plants. I thought I would also use the opportunity to take daily swims in their pool, but they have padlocked the gate (I guess as a safety measure).

They've given me their keys in case of an emergency, so I could easily unlock it.

With these high temperatures, it seems like a reasonable thing to have a quick dip after I build up a sweat watering their garden.

The past year has been tougher than usual for too many people, and the Coffs Coast has so many wonderful people who give their time, energy and money to help others.

For example, the Council’s Industry and Destination development team consistently provide support and encouragement for small businesses to be creative and sustainable.

Stories about the Festival of New Thinking seminars and the announcement of the Coffs Coast as an Eco Destination showed that there are already very successful businesses that are structured around the natural attractions of the area in a long-term, sustainable way.

Many of my stories have been about people who fight to preserve the natural environment of the Coffs Coast.

Those who dismiss these people as ‘greenies’ may not realise that, although they want to preserve forests and animals just because we should, they are also as acutely aware of the economic benefits of promoting our natural assets economically and sustainably as the most astute business people.

Then, there are those who understand that our current approaches to climate change are economically unsustainable and that collecting the climate change ‘bill’ is getting increasingly closer.

The opportunity to visit the Glenreagh Mountain Railway recently showed how all these things can come together.

The committee realise they are sitting on a tourism goldmine, but need the funds to rejuvenate the rail line and innovative business partners to develop integrated attractions and services along the route, boosting the local economy and creating jobs while being sustainable.

During the past year, talking with caring, creative, passionate, energetic people made me realise what a fabulous community exists on the Coffs coast and how much greater it can be.

A PADLOCK seems to give a pretty clear message as to the status of your role in the neighbour's backyard.

I would assume that they are expecting you to maintain the hedge, water any potted plants, prune stray or dying branches, perhaps give the lawn a quick mow, and top up the bird bath.

The padlock sends a strong signal that they are not expecting you to be languishing in the pool on their inflatable flamingo (pina colada in hand), dragging your toes through the crystal-clear water while the portable speaker blares out the best of 2021's Deep House and Chill Music, and a pool boy named Julio gives you the occasional neck massage and feeds you grapes.

I think they have given you the keys as a form of temptation, and you have been drawn to that temptation like a middleaged woman wearing gardening gloves and nursing some RSI from pulling out one too many weeds in 35-degree heat while the dappled turquoise hue of their inground pool seduces you through the seamless glass pool fence.

What you could do is to accidentally throw a native animal (nothing too major, not a koala, maybe a lizard?) over the pool fence and then you would have an excuse to rescue it from drowning.

You could then legitimately unlock the fence and wade in the cool, calm water until you reach the poor, helpless wretch.

You could then contact your neighbours to let them know you had to use the pool key to save a drowning creature and it would be no trouble to add this duty to your gardening jobs as a lizard (or worse) finding its way into the filter box could be a real issue if left for too long.

Just make sure they don't have any CCTV cameras pointed at the pool, or you're just going to look like a sweaty psycho throwing native fauna into a chlorinated environment.

Feast of Ezid

EACH December, before the Friday of the northern winter solstice, our Coffs Harbour Yezidi community observe a three day fast in honour of Ezid, one of the names of

God and also considered to be the name of God’s earthly manifestation in Yezidism.

The Feast of Ezid follows three days of fasting from dawn to sunset.

The evening hours from around 8.00pm are reserved

for feasting, merrymaking, and prayer. Children, older people and the sick are allowed to eat during fasting and it is not compulsory within the community, as individual choice is respected.

This year, fasting started on Tuesday 14 December and ran until Thursday 16 December.

‘Eda Rojia’ is the fourth day which fell last Friday, after three days of fasting.

This is the day when the faithful break the fast, celebrate and greet each other.

Barakat Dhalaf is a respected member of the Coffs Harbour Yezidi community.

AS 2021 comes to a close, we get to ponder on the year that was.

The year that we hoped would be better than 2020 somehow disappointed us along the way as the Covid-19 virus failed to disappear and public health restrictions caused disruptions to student

schooling and unrest among the community.

Business owners suffered the most, not being able to win if they supported the unvaccinated or if they didn’t. However, it was also a year where we were forced to slow down, to work from home, to spend more time with our children while they were not allowed to attend school.

And is it a coincidence that as social media shares of disinformation move faster than trusted sources of news, that threats to our democracy are also rising?

journalists, Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov, in distinct recognition of the role journalism and the free press play as we witness challenges to democracy amidst disinformation.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognised the journalists for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.

The committee stated, “Ms Ressa and Mr Muratov are receiving the Peace Prize for their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia.

“At the same time, they are representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal in a world in which democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly

adverse conditions.”

It is the first time since 1935 that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to journalists.

Then, at another pivotal time in history when threats

He left Syria in 2013 to seek refuge in Iraq, during the war against ISIS. From Iraq, Barakat and his family were resettled in Australia as refugees in 2017.

The family have been happily living in Coffs Harbour and love the area due to its quietness and the fact that it is less populated.

Barakat explains that apart from honouring Ezid, a prayer is made for the members of the community who have passed away.

This is done by visiting the graves of the deceased, early in the morning.

People also visit each other, and forgiveness is exercised among those with differences.

He also points out the slight difference between how this holy day is observed here in Australia by the Syrian Yezidi community and how it is celebrated in Syria.

In Syria, it is done with a large gathering praying together.

This is not possible here in Coffs Harbour, due to the much smaller Yezidi community.

‘Eda Rojia’ was held on 17 December.

Previously, it has been held at the Coffs Harbour Showground.

On this day the Yezidi community arrive carrying food and a celebration is held with dining and dancing, marking the end of the fast.

A time to take stock of what was important and a time to reflect on how many jobs could be undertaken from a home working environment.

I have enjoyed my time writing news stories during 2021, particularly covering Coffs Harbour City Council and the future development of the region.

We have many

passionate councillors leading our region who we should appreciate for all that they do, and for the stands that they take on behalf of the community.

I look forward to watching the newly elected Council team work together in 2022 for the benefit of the community. More community members should tune in and watch the fortnightly Council meetings.

They can actually be quite entertaining!

I will be taking a step back from my reporting for Coffs Coast News Of The Area in 2022 as I concentrate on my full time work with the NSW Department of Education.

Thanks to all of my media contacts who have made the time to take my phone calls and assist me with news stories during 2021.

“Without freedom of expression and freedom of the press, it will be difficult to successfully promote fraternity between nations, disarmament and a better world order to succeed in our time.”

So, independent journalism and trusted news sources are vital to our democracy.

And they need your support now more than ever.

And let’s face it with disinformation racing around the internet you need them too.

COFFS Harbour Futsal and its centre is one of the best-kept secrets of Coffs Harbour sport.

Coffs Harbour Futsal’s summer seasons are currently underway with rounds having been played at the centre based in the North Boambee Valley.

The social men’s competition is held each Monday night, with social games held each Friday night.

Coffs Harbour Futsal’s junior competitions are held on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

Byron Escobar is the Head Director of coaching for Far North NSW and is based at the Coffs Harbour Futsal centre.

He took up the role five months ago after moving from Brisbane, and told News Of the Area that local players had shown potential to excel at a higher level.

“There are some great

players in Coffs Harbour, and a lot of people don't know of the pathways that are available,” he said.

“But those who know about these opportunities are doing really well.”

Escobar highlighted the differences between futsal and traditional football.

“The ball is smaller and it doesn’t bounce as much, and the game is much quicker and everyone is accountable,” he said.

“You have to see the play two steps ahead before it happens and you really have to get behind the ball and help out because it's so quick.”

The coach said the future of Coffs Harbour futsal was bright.

“The Coffs juniors have a strong under 8’s team coming through, and there are a lot of bright prospects for the future,” he said.

Harley Parker is the man behind the creation of a group

and page on social media which led to the start of Friday night social games.

He explained the intentions behind creating the idea for social games on a Friday night.

“The aim was to get a social futsal night going for people who couldn’t play in the futsal competition on a regular basis but still wanted to kick a ball when they could and those who also wanted to keep fit as most six a side outdoor soccer competitions were pushed back and some cancelled due to COVID,” he said.

“We have a good mix of players who have turned up over the last three months, and we take the first 21 names and then make the three teams as fair as possible on playing ability, then each team plays each other twice in four 20-minute games each Friday night.”

Disabled Surfers Association bring THE Mid North Coast Branch for Disabled Surfers Association is returning with its first event scheduled at Jetty Beach Coffs Harbour on Saturday 8 January.

“The program is free for people living with a disability to come and enjoy a surf with volunteers in what is destined to be a welcome return to the Coffs Coast summer calendar,”

“It’s been on and been off, but we’re on with the January date.

“It’s a great day for people to get out and get involved and give back to the community,” Mr Goddard said.

“Bookings are essential for both surfers and volunteers through Eventbrite.”

Mr Goddard, “There is no cost for surfers as this is a not-for-profit organisation however, as with all not for profit we rely heavily on the goodwill of our community.

“In the past Coffs Coast has been very generous with volunteers and we are hoping they will be again, without the community support ‘volunteers’ the events will not run.”

A GROUP of Woolgoolga juniors are part of a futsal team which is ready to take on Australia’s best junior players.

The Woolgoolga boys earnt a place in the Far North NSW under 8s squad set to take part in next month's Australian Futsal Association’s National Futsal Championships in Brisbane.

BMX National Championships NERSNG on the Gold Coast was the venue for the recent AusCycling 2021 BMX National Championships.

Riders from across Australia converged to Nerang to try to take away the National Titles in their respective classes.

Three Coffs Coast Cyclones BMX Club members made the trip across the border to compete and did themselves proud against the top-class competition.

Tyler Calder competed in the 13-14 boys’ cruiser class and made the semi-finals and finished up 16th overall, Tyler backed up on Monday on his 20 inch and after a nasty crash ended up in 27th position.

Aaron Miller competed in

four female golfers ranging in age from 12 to 15 with amazing ability.

The Coffs Harbour Golf Club’s head professional Matt Allan is the coach of the program and he admits he’s thrilled with how good this group of youngsters can be.

“They’re a really good crew of kids with serious talent,” Allan said.

“We are quite excited to work with them.”

The first weekend long session under Allan’s watchful eye included completing the National Skills Test which is an assessment of both the players’ long and short games.

“That will be a pretty awesome experience for them.

“It was something we never got to enjoy so I’m a bit jealous of what the kids will be able to learn at such a young age.”

Who would have played off in the winter season's grand finals?

By: Aiden BURGESS THE cancellation of community sport due to the COVID-19 lockdown in August created the ultimate sliding doors moment for Coffs Harbour’s winter sporting competitions.

August’s lockdown meant finals series were cancelled

after just one week like the AFL North Coast and Group 2 Rugby League, or not started at all like the Coastal Premier League.

But let’s say the finals series of the three major winter sporting competitions were not cancelled at all, then who would have played off for the 2021 premierships in

their respective grand finals?

AFL North Coast: I feel the Coffs Harbour Breakers and Sawtell/Toormina Saints would have played off for the ultimate prize for the fourth time in the last six seasons.

The Breakers finished the season as minor premiers and would have taken their place to try to win the club’s

third premiership since entering the competition in 2015.

The Saints on form would have made the season decider after finishing second on the ladder on the back of seven straight wins heading into the finals series.

Group 2 Rugby League: This year’s premiership decider would have been a rematch of the 2019 grand final, as the Grafton Ghosts

would have taken on the Coffs Harbour Comets for the ultimate prize.

The Ghosts were the most consistent side of an even Group 2 season and finished on top of the ladder as minor premiers.

After a poor start to the season which saw them languish at the bottom of the ladder, the Comets turned things around in dramatic fashion to finish second on the ladder heading into the

finals series.

Coastal Premier League: This year’s grand final would have been a good old-fashioned Coffs Harbour derby between the Coffs City United Lions and Coffs Coast Tigers.

The Lions had a dominant season finishing as undefeated minor premiers, while the Tigers finished second on the ladder with 10 wins and 3 draws from their 18 matches.

Community Sports - 2021 Annual Review MANY memories were created in community sports in 2021 as we look back at some of the highlights of the year and favourite photographs.

January started with Parkrun and two months later 150 participants celebrated a 1980s fancy dress 5km run around Coffs Creek and the Jetty.

The football season kicked off with the FFA Cup where Coffs United’s Mabior Garang kicked the winning penalty to overcome the Coffs Coast Tigers in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to progress to the sixth round of the FFA Cup. The crowd couldn’t hold back their emotions as they ran onto the pitch to celebrate the victory.

Coffs United went on to defeat National Premier League outfit Lake Macquarie City FC to get within one match of reaching the last 32 and potentially drawing an A-League team.

Although they fell short in

the seventh round, it was a good reflection on the standard of the Coastal Premier League.

Over one hundred teams participated in the basketball competitions at Sportz Central as the Coffs Harbour Basketball Association enjoyed success locally and at state level with the Coffs Harbour Suns excelling in junior and senior grades.

The fast and furious sport of Roller Derby wheeled back into action as the team at ‘Coffs Coast Derby’ got their skates on for the 2021 season to wreak havoc around the tracks.

The Coffs Harbour Comets women had a phenomenal season, winning the ladies tag competition and going undefeated for the whole season.

It was a stellar season for the Coffs Harbour Snappers women who went another year undefeated, winning back to back league titles.

Statewide lockdowns in August scuppered grand final aspirations for nearly every sporting code but most teams completed most of their matches and league winners were declared.

Two-time water polo olympian Rebecca Rippon created a splash at Coffs Harbour War Memorial Pool by conducting a free one day water polo clinic.

Rebecca played for Australia at the Athens Olympics in 2004 where she won a bronze medal and at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Coffs Harbour Swimming Club bounced back from the lockdown with over a hundred juniors posting personal best times and a catalogue of successes locally and statewide.

The cricket season started a few weeks later than usual but that didn’t affect reigning champions Diggers Cricket Club who bashed back to where they left off winning their opening matches.

In December, the SCU Marlins lifted the inaugural Colourworks Cup, a three series Rugby 7s tournament between the best teams on the North Coast from Port Macquarie to Tweed.

The Marlins won round one defeating the Kempsey Cannonballs in the final in Grafton, they finished runners-up in round two at C.ex Coffs International Stadium and defeated Casuarina in the semi-finals of round three to attain an unassailable lead and scoop the top prize and $1,500 for the club.

Sign up to volunteer and make a difference locally

By Andrea FERRARI IMPACTS of 2021 have left those that were already disadvantaged more vulnerable, says Di Woods, Manager at Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre.

“Everyone in our community has the ability to make a positive impact for others in our community,” Di told News Of The Area.

“Imagine if each of us made a resolution to donate just an hour a week to helping someone else, what an inspirational change could be made across our community.

“There is a huge range of organisations actively seeking support from community members.

“Many roles don’t need special skills, just an interest, passion or willingness to help others.

“Not everyone is in a position to donate money

- but giving your time is extremely valued.”

Volunteering Coffs Harbour Incorporated is supported by 130 volunteers per year.

“There are formulas that calculate the added benefit that volunteers provide,” said Di. “This is not only based on time donated, but the immense added benefits and

support that are generated for the community by volunteering.

“Volunteering Coffs Harbour Inc volunteers generate over $600,000 annually in benefit to our community.

“We support and coordinate volunteers for over 34 local organisations who are currently needing volunteers.”

Snakes Alive

night at Lowen Taylor’s Bellingen home, little did she know what would unfold the following evening.

There are roles including, visiting, cooking, gardening, driving, reception, support or mentoring others.

“There is something for everyone,” she said.

If you are interested in volunteering, Bridge to Volunteering online workshops will be hosted by the Centre for Volunteering throughout February.

These workshops provide an introduction to volunteering, covering benefits of volunteering; how to get involved in your community; rights and responsibilities of volunteers and organisations that engage volunteers; things to consider when looking for a volunteer role; how to find a suitable volunteer role and volunteering opportunities.

“These sessions are helpful for anyone looking to volunteer, particularly for people who have never volunteered before, people who have done some volunteering but want a more comprehensive introduction to volunteering or people who are new to Australia and have not volunteered here.”

December - I had preheated the oven, made a quick quiche and jumped in shower while it baked.

“Getting out of the shower, we could smell something funky, more like burnt hair than anything else, so we figured a furry friend had been the one making noise the previous night and must be stuck behind the oven.”

Seeing nothing, then hearing a crackling noise like electricity shorting, they moved the oven, got back on the floor, checked, still seeing nothing they pulled the oven away from the wall.

Shining a torch they discovered the snake.

“It seemed half stuck in the back of the oven,” Lowen said.

“I was mortified.

“I'm not a huge fan of snakes but I also do not like hurting animals in any way, so it was a big internal crisis for me.

“I was too scared to attempt to help it, but the thought of it suffering brought me to tears.

Lowen and her partner, Forest, called WIRES immediately who said they would try and get someone out.

She also posted to Facebook.

“People responded almost immediately but unfortunately we still didn't get any assistance that night.

“Forest tried for about an hour to coax it out, but he could only bring it so far, then it would recoil back under, so we assumed it was stuck somewhere.”

On Lowen’s Facebook post there were mentions of Tom the Snake Catcher.

there ASAP “Tom arrived within the hour, just as Forest had managed to remove the back of the oven and free the snake from where it was stuck.

“Tom was in and out, super careful and efficient.

“We were so grateful for his service - he's an absolute legend.”

Tom Damaschke’s official title is WIRES Reptile Species Coordinator for the Mid North Coast, a role he’s embraced for the past eighteen years.

All in a day’s work for Tom, when he arrived at Lowen’s home, he worked out that the carpet python had made its way into the house through a partially open window, without a flyscreen.

“It had made its way under the stove in the kitchen attracted by a rodent,” Tom told News Of The Area.

“The python had made its way into the rear of the stove and came into contact with a live circuit connection where the mains power is connected to the rear of the stove.

“The python sustained a deep electrical burn as a result.

“It had stayed calm throughout and required careful handling, but we got it up to Pacific Vet Care where Sarah attended to the wound and prepared a care plan.”

Tom will be caring for the python until the wound is healed and then release it back to its local habitat.

“Yes, the python did catch and consume the rodent which was clearly visible when the python was X-rayed,” Tom advised.

Lowen and Forest did exactly the right thing to call WIRES, said Tom. Call: 13000 WIRES (94737).
